Taking Hoodia for Weight Loss

Before you begin taking hoodia for weight loss, there are some things that you should know. While there is no specific "hoodia diet", there are recommendations that will help you achieve your goals. It is important to remember that hoodia, like any other appetite suppressant, is just an aid. It is important to set realistic goals for yourself, before you begin taking hoodia for weight loss. A realistic goal is one or two pounds a week. A "hoodia diet" should include planned meals, even though you may not be hungry.

Research has also shown that hoodia gordonii suppresses appetite and thirst.

There is a free program on the web called Spark People, which will help you plan a diet and exercise program based on your personal preferences or physical limitations. If you are 50 pounds overweight, it will take you five or six months to lose the extra weight. This may seem like a long time, but if you begin exercising while taking hoodia for weight loss, you will "feel" like you have lost more. Exercise tones muscles, which will cause you to feel less "flabby". Your clothes will fit better and you will have more energy.


People who are on a hoodia diet and exercise program may feel more energetic because of the exercise and because of the hoodia. Research has shown that hoodia gordonii increases the amount of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) in the blood stream. ATP is an important source of energy for all the cells of the body.


This is why people began taking hoodia for weight loss. It is believed that the active molecules in hoodia gordonii trick the brain into believing that food has been consumed. It is unclear why hoodia suppresses thirst, but it does. Because of the lack of thirst, it is important to drink plenty of water. Water is an important factor in any diet and a hoodia diet is no exception. Many overweight people have a tendency to retain fluid. Drinking water helps the body rid itself of excess fluid in the tissues.


Often when a person begins a diet which decreases salty and fatty foods and increases water consumption, they will lose five or six pounds in the first week. It is not realistic to expect these results every week, but it does have a tendency to motivate dieters. So, remember to drink water when you take hoodia for weight loss.


Some people wonder why they must continue to eat regular meals as part of a hoodia diet. If you are not hungry, why should you eat? Some websites even condone fasting to lose weight quickly. Fasting is extremely hard on the body. Eating regular meals is important in order to maintain normal blood sugar levels. Some diet experts suggest that the best time to eat is when we are not hungry. By eating small meals every couple of hours, we are less likely to overeat, we maintain proper blood sugar levels and we will not decrease our metabolism. Studies have shown that using a low calorie diet for a long period of time has a tendency to decrease a person's metabolism or the rate at which the body burns fat.


Those who take hoodia for weight loss may have less to worry about in regards to metabolism. ATP, which was previously mentioned in relation to energy, is also an important factor in metabolism. But, your long-term goal is to increase your metabolism through diet and exercise. Hoodia gordonii is a short term solution for those who experience hunger between meals, have a tendency to overeat, or trouble resisting high calorie foods.


Internet users will see hundreds of "hoodia for weight loss" ads. Remember to look for products which contain African hoodia gordonii, there are imitators. Manufacturers with C.I.T.E.S. certification are selling the real thing. A hoodia diet does not work for everyone. No diet works for everyone. You should check with your doctor and be in reasonably good health before you begin a diet and exercise program and before you begin taking hoodia for weight loss.

"It's a contest of purposeless me of course, it's all about living." - Lance Armstrong comments on the grueling demands of competitive cycling, after his fourth Tour de France victory in 2002. With the start of the Tour de Georgia last week and the approach of the Tour de France in July, I find myself checking in to see what Lance Armstrong is up to these days. I sometimes do this when I'm in need of a little motivation. Of course, you remember that all of Lance Armstrong's seven Tour de France wins followed a cancer diagnosis in 1996. This was not just any cancer, but a highly aggressive testicular carcinoma that rapidly metastasized to his lungs and brain.


Most people would have crumbled, but based on Armstrong's attitude toward life, his response was absolutely predictable. After absorbing the terror of a certain death sentence, he assaulted the aggressor with the same guts and determination that he exhibits on grueling inclines in the French Alps. It is in the mountains where he typically leaves his competitors in the dust. Armstrong's motto... "Knowledge is power and attitude is everything". The rest is history. As someone who helps people lose weight and improve fitness by changing their habits and behaviors, I'd like to take a closer look at the subject of attitude.


After all, it's attitude that determines whether you drag yourself off the couch and out the door for an invigorating walk, or spend the afternoon watching TV. Whether it's to enhance your life, or save your life, to a very large degree, it is attitude that determines where you end up. If you would like a good example of how attitude can overcome a real downer of an experience, consider Kelly Luckett of Decatur, Georgia. She ran 26.2 miles last year, as the third ever female amputee to compete in the Boston Marathon. That's 26.2 miles six hours, twenty minutes and two seconds.


Tips to "Boost" Your Attitude:

Most of us understand the reasons for our poor physical fitness and the answer to losing weight. We have read volumes on diet and exercise, but it is our attitude that prevents us from doing what needs to be done. One way to develop a powerfully positive attitude, even if you don't feel that way, is to behave as if you do. To that end, planning your actions and anticipating setbacks, in advance, is essential.


1. Schedule workouts on your calendar. Making an important appointment with yourself, in writing, carries more weight than just the vague intention to do something. Schedule for first thing in the morning because research shows that people who exercise before the business day begins are most likely to stick with it.


2. A little bit of something is better than nothing. Regardless of how short you are on time or how blah you're feeling, commit to just five or ten minutes. Every little bit helps and, almost always, once you get going, your energy picks up and you have a great workout.


3. Be flexible. A change of plans is not an excuse to do nothing. If you usually exercise in the gym, and you're out of town, go for a jog. If you forgot your running shoes, go for a brisk walk. Honor your commitment to your exercise appointment.


4. When possible, join your spouse or a workout partner. It's a lot less easy to cop out if someone else is depending on you.

10 Steps for Weight Loss

1) Calculate how many calories you body needs to consume to maintain your existing weight. This is called you maintenance calories.(Search google with "calorie needs" and you will find a few different calculators to help you with this)


Ms. Luckett had the choice to either succumb to her disability or live life fully. She chose to not only live, but to strive for excellence and the result was outstanding. With the list of things I have to do today, I have a "pretty good reason" to stay hunched over my desk until dinnertime, but I guess I have just motivated myself to haul up the anchor and take my protesting body out for a run. It's all about living!


2) Initialy deduct 10%(to a maximum of 500Kcal)off the total maintenance calories. Drastically reducing your calories will result in muslce and water loss - not fat loss.


3)Divide you calories over 5 or 6 meals rather then 2 or 3. You should aim to eat every 3-4 hours.


4)Cut out all simple carbohydrates (except straight after exercise, eat whole grain, high fibre foods.)


5) Exercise at least 3 times a week, doing 30 minutes of cardio to a reasonable level of intensity. This will help to create the calorie defecit and encourage your body to lose fat.


6)Make simple replacements in your diet, Sweetner in place of sugar, diet drinks in place of full sugar drinks, use leaner cuts of meat etc. At first these changes may be difficult but you will get used to them and make vital calorie savings every day.


7) Drink plenty of water - at least 2 litres of water every day - if you are dehydrated you body will be less efficent and will make fat loss more difficult.


8) Try to eat low carb(complex only!), low fat and moderate protein. From my experience the South Beach Diet is excellent.


9)Keep a food diary to monitor how many calories you are consuming - it is very easy to over eat.


10) Supplementing you diet can make fat loss easier. A diet high in protein can help preserve muscle (more muscle means an increase in metabolism). There are also some fat loss supplements available which help boost your metabolism, this is useful as your metabolism may slow during extended periods of dieting.

9. Dates:

NATURAL CANDY! They are loaded with tons of nutrients unlike their artificial counterfeits: candies in the store, but like them have to be eaten in moderation say 4-5 in the spring and summer times and 5-15 (medium sized ones) fall and winter times. Try to eat dates 12 minutes or so after a mono meal of a sweet fruit say bananas or mangoes and 10 minutes before a stalk of Celery or lettuce. Barhi or honey dates are my personal favorites. According to Dr. Arnold Ehret they are excellent mucus absorbers as well. They are great sources of quick energy and surprisingly, proteins.


10. Figs:

When in season, these one of a kind fruits are powerfully cleansing and rank very high as detoxifying and body building elements. Buy them only in season (summer times) it's the favorite of African Chimpanzees.


11. Grapes:

They are great sources of powerful antioxidants. Ensure to eat them organically and in season only (summer). Also try to get the seeded ones. They are one of the best foods to break a fast with. Dried, they make your raisins.


12. Lemons:

This is about the only non-sweet fruit that I personally include in my diet. It has ascorbic properties and when squeezed fresh in warm water first thing in the morning can be unrivaled in beating constipation and alleviating overall lethargy. It is one of the most alkaline forming foods in spite of its acidic taste and it's available year round.


12. Lettuce: The king of Vegetables. Even plain, they have an excellent taste to them. They are highly perishable though and thus need to be consumed soon after purchase. It is the basis of many a salad and is a great body building food. Mountain gorillas of the Plateau regions of Nigeria and Cameroon subsists primarily on leaves and look at how big and strong they are (of course that's all they have access too in their habitats and they are much less active than the lowland gorillas of the south of these two African countries who eat mostly sweet fruits and a few leaves)


13. Maple Syrup:

Native to the First Americans, this food is a balanced form of positive and negative sugars. There are three grades of maple syrup A, B and C. My recommended grade is B. It contains sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper and silicon. Some uninformed operators of the sugaring of maple syrup do use formaldehyde pellets ran through polyethene tubing so ensure to use only organic maple syrup.


14. Mangoes:

As great as this fruit is, eat in moderation though and if you can organically grown and only in season. 4-5 should fill the average person up, but hey if they are too tempting it doesn't hurt to enjoy.


15. Melons:

As a rule Eat melons alone or leave alone. They are one of the fruits that leave the stomach almost as soon as they are ingested and thus should not be combined with other foods, if you must, wait 20 minutes or so and eat Celery or Lettuce. I'm of the firm belief that in the summer times when they peak, a human can subsist on them for days on end. Ensure to get them ripe and enjoy as you desire. I've tried a watermelon fast to very rewarding results.


16. Nectarines:

Like its close relative, peaches, these stone fruits are excellent in the summer times when they are available and a mono meal of them for a restricted diet can be a camouflaged fast.


17. Pears:

A viable winter fruit. It is a sub acid fruit like the apple and is of course loaded with vitamins and minerals. Ensure to eat this fruit only when fully ripe. 18. Pineapples: Look for varieties ripened on the leaves. I've not (as of this writing at least) been to Hawaii to taste their crop but, I've had the pleasures of them in Nigeria, they are simply great. Being an acidic fruit, ensure to consume them in the earlier part of the day.


19. Plantains:

At times known as the potatoes of the air, the varieties grown in Ecuador or the tropical countries are great. They form the staple of many so-called third world countries and can be enjoyed alone or with some plain raw leaves of parsley, lettuce or celery.


20. Potatoes:

Some authors have attacked potatoes as being unsuitable for human consumption. Though not the best food, nothing could be further from the truth though. I've read and have been in tribes who subsist on root vegetables only; its cousin the sweet potato actually ranks high as an alkaline forming food. In my estimation, boiled and mashed with avocadoes and a dash of sea salt after eating some celery, they are a welcome balance to even excessive sweet fruits and are very nourishing as well. They are also easy to digest and are better than even some so-called raw recipes. They of course are available year round.


21. Tomatoes:

Like the potato, it is a member of the nightshade family but unlike it, the tomato is a fruit botanically. Blended with Young Coconuts or Avocadoes, they are excellent for dressing. They are an acidic fruit thus should be eaten in moderation due to their high content of oxalic acids, 2 -3 should suffice and even then every other day. As a rule ensure that all of the above (save for maybe mangoes and avocadoes) are grown organically only.


Better health and a safe weight loss need not be things you have to pay an extreme amount of money for. You really don't need any special recipes, worthless and hazardous substances when trying to lose weight. By simply consuming the divinely ordained foods listed above and of course living an active lifestyle, you will be well on your way to a healthy, effective and safe weight loss that your body will appreciate for years to come. With so many quick-fix diet and fads offered to us by the mass media promising to be the next best thing to bring about an effective and safe weight loss, it is no wonder the public is left confused as to which one to choose. Sadly, this permits for exploitation from the many marketers and charlatans out to make a fast buck on the expense of the vulnerable. Even the so called natural approaches for safe weight loss solutions are unrealistic, impractical and often pricey or are just the same one-dimensional gimmick cures disguised as holistic solutions.


This leads one to conclude that we most go back to the basics when eating not only for weight loss but for better health. Today science has verified the accuracy of the Biblical accounts of the dietetic habits of the first men on earth as recorded in Genesis 1:29: "Every herb bearing seed...and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for meat." Obviously this leads one to conclude that being a vegetarian or more appropriately a vegan will be the most effective route to go when pursuing a safe weight loss and improved health as goals.


To be considered as well, from a spiritual and ethical point, when eating for health and weight loss, products from the animal kingdom should be excluded. As we do not have the power to restore life, we certainly do not have the right to kill. Every action has its reaction and every good or bad action brings forth good or evil fruit. When man was given permission to kill animals and eat their flesh, according to the Bible, animals were also given permission to slay and eat humans: "...And your life will I seek; at the hand of every beast will I seek it." (Gen 9: 5). No wonder so many diseases such as obesity, cancer, rheumatism, asthma and so on are traced to being caused by consumption of animal products in the drugless healing cycles.


Therefore, the recommended staples of your diet should be your fruits and vegetables. These substances constitute the Mucus-Less Diet otherwise known as the 'Alkaline'; Disease Healing or Gen 1:29 diet. It provides you with all the necessary nutrients such as Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats, vitamins and minerals needed for weight loss, improved health and overall fitness and in conjunction with proper exercise will be more than unmatched in helping you achieve these goals. So let's go over the items that should constitute one's diet when eating for health and a safe weight loss.


Safe Weight Loss Diet: Items for Consumption (A-C)

1. Apples:

A sub-acid or sweet fruit depending on its taste, it is an excellent source of the B-complex vitamins, Vitamin C, potassium and soluble fiber to aid as an excellent intestinal broom and mucus absorber. Its origin is in the temperate regions of our earth and is at its peak during the fall and winter seasons.


2. Avocadoes:

A natural aphrodisiac and an excellent source of vitamins A, D E and K, fats and a plethora of other minerals, this nutty tasting fruit vegetable is a must have for the health seeker. As great as it is a fruit, it should be eating in moderation say 1-2 maximum a day depending on your constitution, age and level of physical activity. In Season year round. 3. Bananas: This should be a staple in any health seekers diet considering its year round availability and durability. It's been hailed as having everything the human body needs and containing the 8 essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own. Of course it is the favorite of active kids.


4. Berries:

Berries are high in minerals and vitamins and they taste great. They are, like the apples, of temperate origins. Bears have been said to eat massive amounts of berries and obviously gain tons of strength and 'healthy' weight from them. Berries, being of the acid-fruit category should be eaten in the earlier parts of the day.


5. Cabbage:

Eat this vegetable raw, discarding of its outer leaves as well. Though it is not a dark green vegetable it still stands its own as an excellent source of vitamins A, C and E with the essential amino acids included. Anybody ever heard of cold-slaw?


6. Celery:

Wrongly described as a lower vegetable void of nutrients, this salty and nutritious food is actually the "powerhouse of life-giving nutrition!" It combines with anything first of all and I must admit, increases magnetism to the opposite sex for some strange reason. It is very alkaline forming and helps to relieve muscle cramping and fatigue. Wild, it is the favorite food of our cousin the Gorilla.


7. Citrus:

I mainly eat oranges, most other citrus fruits don't appeal to my sense of taste although they do have tons of vitamin C and calcium but this author has always been a sweet tooth. Tangerines though are excellent and rank quite high as mucus absorbing fruits-even higher than the lemon. As with all acid fruits they are best eaten in the mornings or early afternoons.


8. Coconuts (Young or Green):

These are available in Asian markets or your nearest health food store. They are good sources of grounding fats and proteins and are quite tasty in smoothies. For a light supper, try 1-3 followed by Celery/lettuce, or blend with tomatoes and a little bit of salt and see Ranch French dressing beg to be excused.


Okay that's A-C of what should constitute a natural diet for a safe weight loss regimen. Needless to say some form of exercise will be needed, you may choose to read on my article on "Yoga for Weight Loss: What you need know to succeed" to see why I suggest Yoga along with these obviously natural food items, but of course whatever form of exercise suits your taste or needs will suffice. Let me add though, working with your own body weight may be the best choice and you could at least borrow the warm up routine of yoga known as the sun salutations (it'll only take you 5-10 minutes-if that-but here's something to consider, Indian wrestlers and martial artists perform these exercises in dozens...need I say more?)

A Low Carbohydrate Diet works for weight loss...Don't Believe the Hype! 

When the average person embarks on a diet or fitness regimen in the aim of losing weight or building muscle mass, what they are usually instructed to do is to eat lots of protein and go on a low carbohydrate diet to accomplish either of the goals. Right there, an observer should see a red-flag: "How is it that the same dietetic suggestion for weight loss remains applicable for building muscle mass?!" We all know we need a certain amount of protein everyday to remain healthy. Based on misinformation to this effect, several people view the daily consumption of a high-protein diet as beneficial. But have you really seen any one lose the desired weight on such popular diets as the Atkins Diet, which is basically a low-carbohydrate/high protein lifestyle.


I have seen several people try it and fail, and even became sicker for the process. Here are some other facts that should spur you in the right direction in regards to excessive protein consumption: According to the French Hygienist, Albert Mosseri, diseases and conditions which can be caused or aggravated by too much protein intake include: Leukemia, Skin Diseases and even Cancer.


Based on the John Robbins work titled:

Diet for a New America, the number of people in the US suffering from diseases caused by protein excess is a mind-boggling 40, 000, 000 compared to a measly 3 people suffering from the deficiency of this substance. Judging from these, it may be time to revise the misinforming ideas on protein in our diets. Let's consider some factors on why a Low Carbohydrate Diet may be unnecessary and even detrimental to one's health. .


1. The animals that are usually eaten for protein, what do they subsists on? Substances of the Plant Kingdom for example: cows live on grass exclusively.


2. 98% of the human population is sweet toothed...which shows that carbohydrates are our main need contrary to popular belief. 3. The great apes are primarily fruit eaters (although with substantial amount of leaves in their diets) How similar are humans to them? Very much so. We share 98% of the same genes.


4. It's been scientifically proven that mother's milk is about 2% protein, now if this is the ideal of a growing baby for the first 3 years; of course it shows the minimal need of it. (Point of note, the milk of a woman is affected by her diet so of course that should be checked.)


5. The need of protein for the human body is about a nickel's weight worth, the excess is basically excreted in urine.


6. Several people subsists on fruits and green leaves exclusively or starchy root vegetables, fruits and leaves only and are in top shape-I've seen and am one of them.


7. People have fasted on water only for several days and were actually stronger for the process!


8. Fruits and green leaves give you sufficient protein: e.g. the Banana, Dates, Avocadoes, Olives, Cabbage, Lettuce, Durian, Young Coconuts and even the Apple. Exactly or a little more than what you need at a given time.


See if you can go on a simple two day partial fast. Eat fruits and vegetables only and drink copious amounts of water. You will be cleansing your body to prepare for the longer road ahead in your weight loss program and permanent improvement. You need to train yourself to eat healthfully. Your body is like an automobile. It needs its fluids changed on a regular basis. What is weight loss about? It is not about carbohydrates, calories and portion control It is about keeping your body cleansed, especially your colon. Fasting will begin the colon cleansing process to get rid of digestive wastes. Drink natural juices during your fasting period. Juices help push out the waste.


9. Based on research, the need for amino acids is highly exaggerated as only 16% or our body is Protein. Pure protein is primarily Nitrogen (N) with some Oxygen and Hydrogen and Carbon. We all know that we get a large share of our Oxygen and Hydrogen need from the air. Since we are able to utilize and assimilate a large amount of our needs of these elements, we are able to build the Nitrogen into our body as protein. This process is done by natural bacteria action that is capable of converting it to our use. People who smoke though cannot pick up Nitrogen from the air so easily but might still get enough from proper foods. Although for your well-being, cessation of tobacco usage is mandatory.


10. Research has been done on the diet of the aboriginal tribes living in the Mountains of Hagen. Their diet consisted of 80 % Sweet potatoes. The rest consisted of fruits and green leaf vegetables. Their daily consumption of protein was around 9.92 g. Meanwhile, eliminated in their fecal matter was a protein of around 15 times more of what was ingested. This phenomenon illustrates the protein synthesis illustrated above.


Definitely cutting back on the 'wrong' kinds of Carbohydrates such as Cakes, Confectioneries, Bread, Polished rice and the like will be mandatory for weight-loss, but replacing them with high protein foods is- just as from the points above-unnecessary and actually harmful for overall health and fitness.


So what should we eat? Simple, Raw and properly cooked Fruits, Roots and Leafy Vegetables. Not only is this kind of diet unmatched for speedy weight-loss, but your body will thank you for the change as you mechanically (via the broom-like/mucus-binding qualities of these substances) cleanse yourself from perhaps a life-time of wrong eating. Remember the famous quote by Hippocrates; the "Father of Medicine": "Let your foods be your medicine and your medicine your Foods!" Is Fasting A Good Weight Loss Idea?

Fasting has deep roots in human history. Fasting was common in ancient times especially during the equinoxes. It was thought to increase fertility. American Indians used fasting as a way to repent and to ward off major disasters. The roots of fasting in religion cannot be ignored. Jesus Christ spent 40 days in the desert on a long fast. Early Christians, like the Indians, fasted as a form of penance and with the hope that God would smile on their efforts. Today's Christians debate whether fasting is even recommended. Of course, there are some who think circumcision is mandatory so keep an open mind.


It can be a good idea to implement some fasting into your weight loss program but I would recommend a slow and easy approach to fasting. During my life I have intentionally taken days off to fast and I learned that the hunger pains DO disappear after a couple of days. The longest period of time I spent fasting was four days. Perhaps you have heard that the body will protect itself if it thinks food is scarce. That is true, but people who worry about this are doomed to failure because they want a quick fix for their obesity. I will repeat, some fasting is good for a weight loss program because you get an opportunity to detoxify your system. This leads to more efficient body functioning and better general good health.


During a fast, the body will notice the food is not present and find other ways to get energy. After using up the glucose the body will make ketones. You will see a reduction of hunger during the third day of your fast. But I won't kid you. The first couple of days are very difficult to get through. My mother once attended a fasting retreat with a good friend of hers. She spent a full two weeks fasting and doing mild walking exercises. She lost about 10 pounds but she had put the weight back on within two weeks. If you have the kind of money it takes to go on one of these fasting vacations, you might enjoy the time off. But bring a friend because you will probably need a shoulder to cry on during your stay and after you get home!


There are two primary types of fasting:

1. The Water Fast - that's it. You get water, as much as you want. Simple. It is easy to see how this will help with your weight loss program.

2. The Juice Fast - juice is allowed but nothing else. You can maintain a fast longer drinking good juices because you will ingest beneficial nutrients. Many people will blend their own veggies into a juice. Combine new vegetables into your juice for a fun experiment. Do this after your fast as well.


Overall, I recommend fasting one day a week for optimal benefits. The main purpose of fasting is really to cleanse the system. Think of weight loss as a nice side benefit. No matter how long your fast, you will feel the benefits and your mind will keep you weight loss program on track. This article is published by : .
