Recently there was a news story about a scientific study which concluded that eventually 9 of 10 American men and 7 of 10 American women will become fat, or in politically correct terms, overweight or perhaps "waistline challenged". We have known for years that excess body weight and its more extreme form - obesity - were major problems, but the findings of this study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, indicate that these problems may be even more severe than we have thought. Dr. Elizabeth G. Nabel is quoted in Yahoo News as saying that the study shows "we could have an even more serious degree of overweight and obesity over the next few decades."

A Mayo Clinic researcher, Mark Vander Weg, is quoted on Yahoo as saying that the study's conclusions "add to a growing body of evidence that makes it increasingly apparent that more effective prevention and treatment strategies are urgently needed."

The true costs to the world of global obesity are unknown, but they are doubtless staggering. For the obese individual the costs are not confined to an unattractive bodily appearance. More threatening in the longer term are the seriously adverse health ramifications. For example, obesity is associated with a greater risk of heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and some cancers. And while the greatest negative consequences are reserved for obese or substantially overweight individuals, those whose weight problem is more moderate are also subject to negative consequences, and those consequences include a negative impact on both the quantity of life and quality of life. Specifically, just being moderately overweight raises the risk of sleep apnea and raises cholesterol and blood pressure, which are well known contributors to heart disease.

 

In another article ("Rapid Personal Change"), I made reference to techniques of personal change and their common applications. One of the common applications, as you might have guessed by now, is Weight Loss; or better stated: the healthy loss of excess body fat. Your body weight includes your bones, your muscles, your tendons, etc. but you don't want to lose those because they are good things. Excess fat, however, is useless and indeed harmful. And that is what you want to lose or avoid gaining. So healthy weight loss is fat loss, but for simplicity we'll just call it weight loss.

 

Now if enough factors are present, there are various approaches that will work to some degree for weight loss. There are two approaches, however, that I believe provide the greatest degree of lasting success for the greatest number of people. Before getting into some details, let me provide you with a little background.

 

If you are like most people you have tried to lose weight, and/or make other positive changes, a number of times. And, again like most people, you have been unsuccessful a majority of the times, perhaps meeting with mixed results upon occasion but not enjoying substantial and lasting success. Why? Most people try to lose weight, or make other improvements by changing their CONSCIOUS thinking.

 

But the two biggest drivers of behavior are:

(1) SUBconscious thinking - that is, the beliefs and images we unwittingly internalized years or decades ago -- and

(2) the degree of balance versus disruption in the body's energy system. If the subconscious mind's deeply implanted beliefs and images, for examples, "I am meant to be fat" or "I am unpopular with the opposite sex," do not serve us, then we need to change them in order to live healthy, harmonious, and happy lives.

 

But you cannot change them by relying primarily on the conscious level of thought. That would be analogous to trying to rid your garden of weeds by clipping the weeds but leaving the roots in place. To make effective and lasting improvement, you need to deal with the roots. And you do this either by balancing bodily energy flow through a technique called EFT, which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques; or by working directly at the subconscious level through hypnosis, which is a mind energy state. Ideally, for lasting weight loss or other major personal changes, you would do both, that is, a combination of EFT and hypnosis (although either can work well by itself).

 

Whether working at the subconscious level of thought or working on the body's energy system or both, the goal is to root out your old negative beliefs and images and supplant them with new and empowering ones. That will lead naturally to the behaviors and the results you want. And that is what today's premier coaching services and products do, and that is why they work so very well. The easiest way to reduce your consumption is simply to cut back on the size of your meals and/or the amount of high-Calorie foods that you consume. This doesn't mean that you have to give up any particular food. In fact, completely avoiding a food can lead to strong cravings that derail your diet. A smarter approach is to just eat less of those high-Calorie foods. Also beware of foods containing "hidden" Calories.

 

For example: *Watch what you drink*. What you drink during the day can have a major impact on the number of Calories that you consume. There is very little difference between the satiating effects of different drinks, so this is one of the easiest places to improve your diet. Water is always your best choice, but coffee, tea, and diet drinks can also help cut Calories.

 

*Be smart about condiments and toppings*. Butter, mayonnaise, and a lot of the "special sauces" used by restaurants are very concentrated sources of Calories. If you want to add flavor to your food, try using lemon juice, soy sauce, salsa or different spices instead.

 

3. *Maintain or increase your metabolism.*

One of the most common mistakes that dieters make is to get excited or impatient with their diet, and reduce their Caloric intake /too far/. If you do that, your body will respond by lowering your metabolism and slowing your weight loss. To prevent this downward adjustment of your metabolism, make smaller changes to your eating habits. Your patience will pay off in terms of more consistent weight loss, more energy, and fewer cravings.

 

For the best results, add exercise to your plan. Regular exercise not only expends energy as you're doing it, but can also lead to increases in your basic metabolic rate, so you'll burn more calories even at rest. High-intensity exercises burn the most calories, but don't select exercises solely on their fat-burning potential. Instead, pick exercises (i.e. sports activities) that you enjoy, and want to incorporate into your daily routine.

 

4.*Avoid hunger*.Hunger is one of your body's strongest stimuli, and can be an evil challenger to your will power. Hunger is also relatively slow to subside, and can cause you to eat more than you intended. To break this unproductive hunger-overeating habit, always try to eat before you get hungry. This may seem counter intuitive to someone who's trying to limit their Calories, but it's a very effective concept. Two different techniques can help make this easier to accomplish:

 

*Eat smaller, more frequent meals*.

Instead of three meals per day, try eating five or six smaller meals. By eating more frequently, there will be less time between your meals, and less chance of you experiencing such intense hunger. As an extra benefit, there is some evidence that suggests that eating more frequently can also help raise your metabolism.

 

*Include more slow-to-digest foods in your meals*.

When it's not possible to eat more frequently, make sure that your meals contain a mix of nutrients. In particular, fats and protein are much slower to digest than carbohydrates. While most carbohydrates leave your stomach within about two hours, protein takes approximately four hours to digest, and fat takes as long as six hours. But remember fat has four times the calories of other energy sources.

 

*Note*: The slower digestion of fat is one of the primary reasons that people on low-carb diets (like Atkins™ and South Beach™)experience less hunger than those on low-fat diets. It's not necessary to completely eliminate carbohydrates from your meals, though. Most people on balanced-nutrient plans (like the Zone Diet) also experience better hunger control.

 

5. *Correct bad eating habits.* We eat not only for nourishment, but also as part of our social interactions. However, many people develop unhealthy habits that encourage overeating. Here are a few examples of bad eating habits that you should try to avoid:

*Mixing food and entertainment. *It's easy to mindlessly eat a tub of popcorn, a whole bag of chips, or a carton of ice cream while you're watching TV. Make eating a separate activity, and you'll consume less.

 

*Eating to relieve stress.* There's nothing wrong with taking pleasure from eating, but try not to use food as your primary stress reliever. Find other ways to dissipate stress (such as exercising, listening to music, or meditating) before eating.

 

*Eating on the run*. With the abundant availability of convenience foods, it's easy to grab something from a vending machine and eat your meals in your car. But try not to make this a regular daily habit. Plan your schedule to include enough time to prepare and eat your meals in a quiet place, without the rush.

 

No one eats perfectly. However, if you continuously have trouble controlling what you eat, realize that correction of your eating problems may be beyond your own abilities. Please consult a psychologist or weight loss professional for additional help.

 

6. *Make a record of everything you eat* When making changes to your diet, it's very easy to lapse back into your old eating habits. Keeping a food diary is a great way to help prevent that from happening. Buy an inexpensive spiral notebook, and simply write down everything that you eat during the day. If possible, keep your food diary with you, and make your entries soon after you've eaten. For maximum benefit, keep making entries for at least three weeks.

 

Keeping a food diary forces you to give conscious thought to everything that you eat. It may be a tedious task at first, but it will help you more quickly develop better eating habits. Your food diary will also be a tremendous asset if you later consult a dietician or health care provider for assistance with your diet. When keeping a food diary, it's also a good idea to take the time to add up the total Calories and nutrients that you consume eachn day. For your diet to be successful, your total Calories will need to decrease from their original level, but your nutrient intake must at least meet your minimum needs.

Children's bodies cry out for physical activity so we take our children out and give them lots of active play. But what are we doing for ourselves while we are running around chauffeuring them from one thing to the next? Are we just complaining we haven't got time to exercise? Carve some time out of your schedule every day to do something active, even if it's just a 10-minute walk at lunchtime. No child deserves to be cooped up all day and neither do you. You can't expect to perform at your peak if you only ever move between your desk and the coffee machine or the sofa and the fridge.

 

4. Stick with It long term

When you have a child, you're in it for the long haul. You're not here one day and gone the next. You commit to taking responsibility for the child's welfare at least until they grow up and probably for long after that. So why should it be any different where your own health and welfare is concerned? You deserve long term care, not a two-week crash diet "that's all I'm giving it" before going back to abusing your body. Make a commitment to care for your health forever.

 

5. Be Consistent

You care for a precious child day in day out. You don't give the child lots of love and care on Monday only to neglect him or her by Friday. That's exactly how you treat yourself when you start a new diet every other week. You need to be consistent in treating yourself well to get great results.

 

6. Make it routine

Children thrive on routine. Despite their protests they love the security of knowing the rules of the house and someone caring whether they keep to them or not. They like order and certainty about how things are done.

 

Adults are no different. Everyone is a creature of habit to some extent. When we have good habits we eat healthily and move our bodies without thinking about it. And we reach our weight loss and fitness goals as a result of following our habits - almost automatically. Exercise Your Way to Weight Loss and Health...You CAN Do it! We've all heard a hundred times that the key to weight loss and a healthy body is a sound diet and exercise. Many of us work hard to keep our diets in check, but have a hard time when it comes to exercise. Either we're short on time, feel too tired, or just don't have the motivation to get up any earlier.

 

Well, if you're one of those that has a hard time with exercise, I've got good news for you. Exercise doesn't have to be that hard! You don't have to spend an hour at it, and you don't have to join a gym or buy expensive equipment. In fact, just 20 minutes of exercise per day can give you great health benefits over the long haul. Even if you only do 5 or 10 minutes at a time, you're still doing your heart--and your physique--a lot of good.

 

When you're short on time, you can sneak your exercise in just about anywhere you are. It's amazing what a little heart-pumping here and there will do for your health AND your mood. Pulling a stressful 9-to-5 shift? Take a 15-minute break twice a day and go for a walk...even around the office or up and down the stairs. The exercise will not only burn a few extra calories, but it will also help you avoid that afternoon slump and put you in a better frame of mind.

 

Got too much laundry to worry about exercise? Use your chores as a workout. Take a few extra trips up and down the stairs, dance while you dust, or vacuum whether you need to or not. Load the dishwasher in a squat position to tighten those glutes, and keep those abs pulled in no matter what you're doing.

 

While you're out doing your regular errands, get a little exercise as well. Park at the far end of the parking lot to do a little walking. Contract your arm and back muscles while you push that shopping cart. Carry your toddler instead of having her walk. If you only have a few items to get at the store or have a neighborhood delivery to make, walk!

 

If you can, set your alarm just 20 minutes earlier and grab your dumbbells. Find a few exercises on the Web and alternate working different parts of the body on different days. Weight-bearing exercise is the best way to increase your lean muscle mass, which will boost your metabolism and help you stay fit. You'll also get stronger bones! No dumbbells? Use soup cans or gallons of milk.

If you're trying to lose weight, exercise will get you to your goal much faster, and you'll form a healthy habit along the way. It takes just 21 days to form a habit, so if you can commit to exercise several times a week for just the next three weeks, it will become easier to keep it up. You will probably even decide you enjoy it!

 

Remember, exercise is any activity that gets your heart rate into its target zone. You don't have to sweat it out in front of a video or in an organized class. Your exercise can be walking, dancing, tennis, football, biking, or any other sport or physical activity you enjoy. As long as you keep it up and use variation to keep from getting bored, exercise can be an enjoyable, permanent part of your new healthy lifestyle.

Americans spend billions upon billions of dollars every year trying to get in shape. We try weight loss diet after weight loss diet, only to fail miserably, or lose a little and then gain it back once we stop the diet. We've all heard the advice that "diets don't work," but what DOES work? Is there really a healthy weight loss diet we can start today and stay on-- reasonably--forever?

 

Now I assume no pun was intended by the phrase "growing body of evidence." More seriously, he is absolutely right: we need better prevention and we need better solutions for people for whom prevention is no longer an option and we need them urgently or the costs to society and the many affected individuals will become even greater.

 

There is no simple answer to this question. There is so much confusing research and so many conflicting studies that people don't know where to turn. Every book that comes out claims to contain the latest and greatest weight loss diet. Every guru you see on TV says they have the secret. But it seems that every time you try something new, you end up disappointed. So, when you need a weight loss diet, what should you look for? There are a few basic principles that everyone should keep in mind when searching for a weight loss diet. Let's mention them briefly.

 

First, many experts would probably agree that the solution to America's weight problem can be summed up in one phrase: calories in, calories out. Speaking strictly about weight loss (not necessarily about health), in order to lose weight you must burn off more calories than you consume. Every pound equates to 3500 calories. So even if you consume 2000 calories every day, if you don't burn off 2000 or more, you'll gain weight. If you consume 1500 calories and burn off 2000, you'll lose weight. It sounds simple, but as anyone who's ever tried (and failed) to lose weight can tell you, it isn't that easy! People have varying opinions on how your weight loss diet should go about achieving the proper calories in / calories out ratio, but calories certainly do matter when you're on a weight loss diet.

 

Second, look for something that makes good nutritional sense to you. A weight loss diet that promises a 10-pound loss in a weekend might sound great, but if you achieve that loss by consuming only some special juice or lemon water for three days, you're probably smart to give that program the heave-ho. A good weight loss diet will allow you to consume fewer calories without losing vital nutrients or risking your health. And any weight loss diet that works that quickly and requires such drastic measures will likely result in weight GAIN over the long haul.

 

Third, any weight loss diet or program you go on should encourage exercise. If they tell you that exercise is not required, they're not looking out for your health. Even when you're not on a weight loss diet or trying to get into shape, exercise is good for you and beneficial in too many ways to count. Some exercise, even a little, is better than none at all. Any weight loss diet that encourages or promises substantial, "healthy" weight loss without exercise is better left alone.

 

Basically, look for a program that isn't too extreme. You need a weight loss diet that you can stick with--at least most of the time. Beware those lofty promises of miraculous losses, all while eating ice cream and sitting on the couch. A weight loss diet that's worth trying will require some work. It will ask you to make some modifications to your current lifestyle, but without sacrificing your health.
