For many people, trying to diet during the holidays is like trying to find the perfect Christmas gift for Aunt Edna: almost impossible. No diet pill or weight loss program can overcome the irresistible draw of fudge, eggnog and candy canes. So what's a weight watcher to do? Is there any hope for holiday weight loss, or are we destined to add some more pounds before the inevitable New Years resolution?
Happily, that much at least appears to be false. However, Americans do tend to gain some weight during this time of year: "Previous studies suggested that Americans gain an average of 0.4 to 1.8 pounds each year during their adult lives" (source: nichd.nih.gov). What's alarming is that although we're putting on fewer pounds during the holidays than we had previously thought we're not taking that extra weight back off.
"Researchers now say they have some good news for us -- and some bad news. The good news? Most of us gain less weight over the winter holidays than we think, only one pound on average. The bad news? We never take it off" (source: archives.cnn.com).
Dr. Yanovski has conducted extensive research on weight gain. "Although an average holiday weight gain of less than a pound may seem unimportant, that weight was not lost over the remainder of the year, Dr. Yanovski said. When 165 of the study volunteers were weighed a year after the study began, they had not lost the extra weight gained during the holidays, and ended the year a pound and a half heavier (1.4 lb) than they were the year before" (source: nichd.nih.gov).
Permanent holiday weight gain isn't a pleasant thought for most of us, especially since the number one New Year resolution is fast weight loss. As reported by mygoals.com, 80 percent of Americans made a New Year resolution in 2005. A whopping 26 percent of those resolutions were to improve overall health and fitness, making this the top category for self-improvement. This year was no anomaly, either, according to Amy O'Connor, deputy editor of Prevention magazine: "Fifty-nine million people every year resolve to lose weight."
So what can we do to maintain some degree of weight control this season? Is there anything we can do to stick to our weight loss plan, or perhaps even achieve some quick weight loss, in the midst of all that Christmas cheer? Thankfully, the answer is yes. But it will require a two-pronged approach. First, we need to maintain a healthy diet plan despite all the holiday temptation. Second, it is absolutely critical that we keep exercising throughout the Yuletide season. So without further ado, let's take a look at some diet information that may help us maintain our ideal weight this year.
-> Healthy Holiday Food Tips:
1) At holiday parties, provide or bring veggie trays instead of traditional meat and cheese platters, which are much higher in fat. Reduced fat salad dressing makes a great veggie dip, and when used in place of the full-fat version will save you at least 70 calories per serving.
2) When it comes to holiday desserts, replace the typical pies with fruit or yogurt parfait.
3) Cut back on alcoholic drinks and drink water, fruit juice or diet soda instead. An 8-ounce eggnog with rum contains 450 calories, about 25 percent of what the average woman should have in an entire day! The average alcoholic drink contains 150-200 calories per glass. Not only does alcohol pack a lot of empty calories, but over-consumption lowers inhibitions and self-control.....not a good combination when you're near the buffet table!
4) Be sure to eat a healthy, high-protein snack before going to that holiday party or dinner. The protein will help you feel full longer and stabilize blood sugars. You'll be less likely to binge, and overall calorie consumption will fall.
5) It seems that at every holiday party there is a group that congregates near the buffet table to talk. Don't be part of that group!
6) Out of sight is out of mind. If you have a stockpile of Christmas candy at home (only for guests, of course!), hide it in a cupboard. You'll be much less likely to graze on it throughout the day. Keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the counter instead.
7) Avoid temptation. If the breakroom at work is full of holiday treats throughout November and December, consider taking breaks at your desk. Even better, use that time to take a walk down the street or simply around the office building.
8) On the day of the party or big family feast, don't starve yourself prior to the banquet. That will only leave you so famished that you overindulge. Instead, eat small high-protein meals or snacks every three to four hours before the big dinner.
9) If you're serving stuffing with the turkey this year, cook the stuffing separately. This will prevent the fat from the turkey from soaking into the dressing, which will dramatically lower the calories.
10) All turkey is not equal. Choose light meat instead of dark meat and you'll save a lot of calories. A 3 1/2 ounce serving of sliced meat from a whole roasted turkey has either 161 calories (white meat without skin) or 192 calories (dark meat without skin).
11) Speaking of turkey, don't forget to trim off the skin before serving it up! You'll save 33 to 40 calories and 4 or 5 grams of fat per serving (source: urbanext.uiuc.edu).
12) Make the gravy in advance so you have time to put it in the refrigerator. As it cools, the fat will rise to the top and solidify, allowing you to skim it off with a spoon and put it where it belongs: in the trash!
13) Don't rush the meal. It takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to signal the brain that you're full, so any meal should last at least that long! Take your time, eat slowly, and enjoy your family and friends.
14) Wear 'skinny' clothes to that holiday party as a reminder to watch what you eat. Snug, tight clothes don't leave much room for bingeing!
15) When confronted with a buffet table, make your first trip count. Pile up your plate with fresh vegetables, lean meats and other low calorie options. Eat as much healthy food as you can! This will dramatically lower the amount of desserts you'll later take and will result in a healthier meal overall.
16) When filling up plates for the kids, only give them what they can eat. It's too tempting to just 'finish off' those leftovers for them. Moms, you know what we're talking about here!
17) Follow the 'Dessert Split' plan: Go ahead and take something from the dessert table, but split it with a friend. If you must taste two desserts, split them with two friends. If you feel the need to sample three desserts, split them with three friends. You get the idea. That way you'll get to taste all the new foods and recipes without completely breaking the calorie budget.
18) When cooking, use evaporated milk straight from the can instead of heavy cream.
19) When baking, three tablespoons will substitute nicely for 1 ounce of unsweetened chocolate.
20) When baking, substitute two egg whites in the place of one whole egg.
21) When baking, substitute unsweetened applesauce for an equal amount of oil.
22) For desserts, don't forget to use non-fat frozen yogurt where you would normally use ice cream.
23) Don't attempt to deprive yourself of your absolute favorite food. This only sets you up for a disappointing binge. Instead, allow yourself one small serving of your preferred treat and really savor it.
Just watching your diet alone won't lead to easy weight loss. For true fat loss, it is critical that you incorporate regular exercise into the holiday routine. Again referring to Dr. Yanovski's holiday weight loss study, we can confirm the important of exercise. "The finding that study volunteers reporting more physical activity had less holiday weight gain suggests that increasing physical activity may be an effective method for preventing weight gain during this high-risk time" (source: nichd.nih.gov).
Traditional holiday activities don't even come close to solving this weight issue. The popular 'after dinner nap' burns only about 34 calories for every thirty minutes asleep. Watching television, that great American holiday pastime, burns just 37 calories every thirty minutes. Even sitting down and eating burns more calories than that (56 calories burned every thirty minutes). Clearly, our favorite holiday activities don't make the best weight loss program (source: caloriesperhour.com).
Only regular and consistent exercise, combined with a low fat diet, will get us the holiday weight loss results we're seeking. Don't have the time or urging to exercise? Take a look at this list of the top ten ways to get some holiday exercise without being a humbug:
-> Holiday Exercise Tips:
1) It's beautiful outside during the holidays! Take a walk outside, down the street or around the block. Take a walking tour of Christmas lights in the neighborhood. A 165 lb. woman walking for 30 minutes will burn approximately 187 calories (source: caloriesperhour.com).
2) Going shopping this Christmas season? Who isn't? Park as far away from the entrance as possible so you'll be forced to walk further. Remember, every little bit adds up!
3) Investigate a new shopping mall. You're going shopping anyway, so why not get some extra exercise in the process? Find a mall you've never been to before and make it a point to walk up and down every single staircase. While you're at it, walk past every single store too.
4) Failing to plan is planning to fail. Right now, before the holiday get crazy, make a plan to get into the gym. Thinking you'll 'get around to it' just doesn't happen when there are gifts to buy, foods to prepare, and family to visit. Make a plan, write it down, and stick to it.
5) Don't fall into the 'all or nothing' trap. If you've missed a few visits to the gym already this week, don't give up until New Years! Instead, get in there and exercise now - even if it's just once. Some exercise is always better than none at all.
6) When you're really short on motivation or time, try to get at least ten minutes of exercise. Chances are, once you get started you'll finish up with the recommended thirty minutes. Even if you do quit after ten minutes, that's still a lot better than zero!
7) Get in a good solid exercise session right before a big meal. It will increase your will power and your metabolism.
8) Don't pay the neighbor kid to shovel off the walk for you - do it yourself! You'll save a few bucks and burn about 225 calories for every thirty minutes of shoveling (source: caloriesperhour.com).
9) Clean the house! Hey, you need to get ready for the annual family visit anyway. Vigorous house cleaning burns about 150 calories every thirty minutes (source: caloriesperhour.com).
10) Find a workout buddy. Pick a good friend or family member that also wants to lose weight fast, and together make a commitment to exercise regularly. You might even want to buy each other a gift certificate for a local gym as a Christmas gift!
There's no doubt that healthy weight loss during the holidays is difficult, but it is certainly not impossible. Follow a sensible weight loss diet, remember to exercise regularly, and this year you'll be smiling like Santa instead of grimacing like the Grinch!

Fast Food Weight Loss - Is Eating At McDonald's The New Path To Weight Loss?
Is eating at McDonald's the new path to weight loss? Can fast food burgers, fries and sodas fit into your diet and weight loss program? For years, the answer has been a resounding NO. But lately, Wendy's, Burger King and many other fast food chains have made changes to help consumers stick to a healthy diet.
Why have fast food companies finally started to pay attention to healthier food choices? Simply stated, because it's good for business. Americans are trying everything from the newest weight loss pill to Weight Watchers to lose their extra fat, spending ".....more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans and related foods, estimates Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry" (Source: cnn.com; 1-14-2005).
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight. Any fast foods company that's paying attention to public sentiment and trends has made changes to make their menu more palatable to the health and fitness enthusiast. McDonald's, long an industry leader, has made tremendous strides in this area culminating in their recent announcement that all fast food packaging will soon include nutritional information. But have they gone far enough?
-> Fast Food = Fat Food:
No matter how many healthy new products are introduced onto the fast food menu boards, the problem is that their core products are high in fat and calories.
Consider these typical meals from McDonald's:
* Big Mac, Large Fries, Large Coca-Cola, Hot Fudge Sundae = 1,730 calories, 99% of daily fat, 108% of daily saturated fat, 86% of daily carbohydrates
* Chicken Selects Breast Strips (5 pc), Large Fries, Large Coke, McFlurry with M+M's Candies (12 oz.) = 2,290 calories, 151% of daily fat, 131% of daily saturated fat, 100% of daily carbohydrates
* Bacon Ranch Salad/Crispy Chicken, Newman's Ranch Dressing, Large Coke, McFlurry Oreo (12 oz.) = 1,390 calories, 73% of daily fat, 81% of daily saturated fat, 69% of daily carbohydrates
Some consumers, in an attempt to reduce the number of calories and fat they're eating, have opted for salads instead of traditional burgers and fries. Unfortunately, some fast food salads are almost as bad for us as a Big Mac. A California Cobb salad with Newman's Own Cobb Dressing from McDonald's, for example, boasts 490 calories and 42% of your daily fat. Compare that to a Big Mac, which has 560 calories and 47% of your recommended daily fat.
Clearly, high calorie fast food has become a problem. With approximately 65% of Americans classified as overweight, people are pointing fingers of blame. "In a lawsuit filed in 2002, two Bronx teenagers accused McDonald's of making them fat by serving them highly processed food that affected their health. A judge tossed out the case a year later, but an appeals court reinstated part of the suit earlier this year, according to published reports." (Source: cnn.com; 10-20-2005).
McDonald's isn't the only chain being accused of making people fat. "A New York City lawyer has filed suit against the four big fast-food corporations, saying their fatty foods are responsible for his client's obesity and related health problems. Samuel Hirsch filed his lawsuit Wednesday at a New York state court in the Bronx, alleging that McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and KFC Corporation are irresponsible and deceptive in the posting of their nutritional information, that they need to offer healthier options on their menus, and that they create a de facto addiction in their consumers" (Source: foxnews.com; 7-24-2002).
The fast food industry initially responded by arguing that customers have a choice of what to order when going to a restaurant. "It's senseless, baseless and ridiculous," National Restaurant Association spokeswoman Katharine Kim said. "There are choices in restaurants and people can make these choices, and there's a little personal responsibility as well." (Source: foxnews.com; 7-24-2002).
Our elected officials seem to agree with that assessment. "The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday that would block lawsuits by people who blame fast-food chains for their obesity. The 'cheeseburger bill,' as it has been dubbed in Congress, stems from class-action litigation that accused McDonald's of causing obesity in children" (Source: cnn.com; 10-20-2005). This bill is not yet law, having passed the House but not yet the Senate. In the last Congress a similar bill passed the House, but the Senate never acted on it. About 20 states have laws similar to the 'cheeseburger bill'.
-> Fast Food Makes A Change:
To their credit, McDonald's and some others in the fast food industry have made changes to their menu making it easier for us to stick to our diet program or weight loss plan. McDonald's allows consumers to substitute Apple Dippers with Caramel Dip for the french fries in their meal, cutting calories from 350 to 100 and reducing fat from 16 grams all the way down to 1 gram (comparison vs. medium fries). McDonald's also allows a no-cost substitution of 1% milk instead of a Coke, further cutting caloric intake by 50 calories and boosting protein and calcium (comparison vs. small Coke Classic).
Upon request, Burger King now provides Mott's Strawberry Flavored Applesauce in place of french fries which will save you 270 calories and 18 grams of fat (comparison vs. medium fries). Wendy's will honor customer requests to substitute mandarin oranges for french fries, sparing you a belt-busting 360 calories and 21 grams of fat (comparison vs. medium fries).
Not only are the fast food giants allowing healthier substitutions, but they have also added a selection of fairly nutritious menu options. McDonald's new Fruit & Walnut Salad has only 310 calories and 13 grams of fat, while their Fruit & Yogurt Parfait boasts 160 calories and 2 grams of fat. In some markets Burger King is offering a Veggie Burger that has only 340 calories and 8 grams of fat when you order it without the mayonnaise.
Now McDonald's has given consumers looking for fast weight loss another tool: easy to read and easy to find nutritional labels. In the past, customers wanting to find nutrition facts on their fast food choices either had to search in the restaurant for a hard-to-find poster or go online. Now, in what is being called a 'bold move', McDonald's is planning to put these nutritional facts right where they're easiest to find - on the product wrapper itself. "McDonald's Corp. customers will soon know that the Big Mac they bought contains almost half their recommended daily fat intake just by looking at the wrapper. In its latest measure to fend off critics that blame the world's largest restaurant company for contributing to rising incidents of obesity and other health problems, McDonald's said it will start printing nutritional information on the packaging of its food" (Source: cnn.com; 10-26-2005).
McDonald's is to be commended for their efforts to educate their customers. This new informative label goes a long way towards answering nutritional concerns. Expected to be in most stores by the end of 2006, the new labels will include the amount of the nutrient (calories, fat, protein, etc.) and the percentage of the daily recommended intake, based on a 2,000 calorie diet.
-> Is It Enough?
The fast food industry has heard the public asking for healthier options and more nutritional information, and they have responded. But it is enough? McDonald's and others still sell high calorie and high fat products, and we shouldn't expect those to disappear anytime soon. In our free market, as long as there is a demand there will be someone with a supply. "Data from USDA's food intake surveys show that the food-away-from-home sector provided 32 percent of total food energy consumption in 1994-96, up from 18 percent in 1977-78. The data also suggest that, when eating out, people either eat more or eat higher calorie foods-or both-and that this tendency appears to be increasing" (Source: usda.gov).
Even with more information at their fingertips, there is some doubt that consumers will actually use that information to make healthier choices. Consider the limited impact from warning labels on cigarettes and alcohol packaging; despite such dire warnings, people still use these products. There is evidence that Americans will continue to eat what they want, no matter how much information they have available to them. "According to a 2000 Roper Reports survey of a nationally representative sample of 2,000 Americans 18 or older, the percentage of Americans who say they are eating "pretty much whatever they want" was at an all-time high of 70 percent in 2000, up from 58 percent in 1997" (Source: usda.gov).
The question of 'is it enough' seems to be misdirected. Instead of asking the fast food industry to do more to educate the public and offer healthy options, perhaps what we as a country should do is ask ourselves if the information we have right now is enough. If we look for it, is there enough health, fitness and nutritional information out there to help us make the right dietary choices? As uncomfortable as it may be for some, the answer to this question is probably yes.
-> The Overlooked Answer:
All too often, when participating in a discussion of diet and weight control, we fail to mention the most obvious answer: exercise! Consistent exercise can balance out and make up for the occasional high calorie fast food meal, while at the same time providing countless other health benefits. Exercise is the only path to quick weight loss that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than nutrition labels ever will alone. Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being.
Reaching your ideal weight via a healthy and active lifestyle has been found to lower health risks and medical problems in 90 percent of overweight patients. In addition to the exercise benefits listed above, fit people are eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit, and 53 percent less likely to die from other diseases. Fit people are also eight times less likely to die from heart disease.
Yes, nutrition labels are important insofar as we actually use them. But without a doubt, regular exercise is the most important piece of the puzzle and the best way to achieve rapid weight loss. Exercise is the safest way to achieve permanent fat loss, and when combined with a sound diet and nutrition program the body is turned into a virtual fat-burning furnace!
Consumers would be wise to use the new tools from the fast food industry. Order the healthier items off the menu, pay attention to the nutritional labels, and above all else remember to participate in regular exercise.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #22
Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #22
Have you had an amazing transformation of self? Are you learning that your power lies in your thoughts? Remember whatever you think about you manifest so if you've manifested frustration, what have your thoughts been about? Turn your attention on what you do want and hold that attention and you will begin to vibrate there.
Although chastised in the movie 'SuperSize Me', McDonald's isn't alone in offering high calories foods. The Original Whopper with Cheese from Burger King will cost you 800 calories and 49 grams of fat. Make that a Double Whopper with Cheese and you'll consume an incredible 1,060 calories and 69 grams of fat. The Big Bacon Classic from Wendy's is better with 580 calories and 29 grams of fat, while the Bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger from Jack In The Box is the highest on the list with 1,094 calories and a tremendous 78 grams of fat.
If you desire to feel vibrant and healthy and rid yourself of the excess weight, then focus on those things that are going to give you the outcome that you want. Surround yourself with the conditions and the people which will help you move towards your goal. If you find yourself spending time with people who aren't health conscious and you end up slipping into what you don't want, then what is the simple answer?
What I have found is that until you can be strong enough in your own sense of who you are, it's important that you not be around people who don't subscribe to a healthy lifestyle--or at least limit your exposure. Working on yourself with the daily work will be the key factor in helping you gain your power back so that you can be around people and not be affected by what they eat. In addition, you won't be affected by their negative energy because you're going to be vibrating at such a higher level.
Doing the daily work is crucial to your success to keep your thoughts vibrating at a higher level and sustaining that positive energy. You owe it to yourself to be empowered so that you take responsibility for your own health and well-being. Have you ever said to yourself, "That person makes me so mad!" When you do this, you are giving your power to that person and thus are feeling the effects of that negative emotion in every part of your body. In some ways you keep telling yourself that you'll wait until all the mean people leave the earth, then you'll have peace. Guess what?
It doesn't work that way. Peace comes with practice in loving yourself enough then you're not bothered by what people do or say. It's simple but it does take daily practice because struggle has been our middle name. Ready to change your middle name?
Okay, I'll admit that when I'm around negative people, I will revert to seven year old Tami who secretly sticks her tongue out, makes faces at them or desperately wants to moon them. Oh, that inner child that will get the best of me sometimes. I have to go sit in a corner and do some of my own daily work. Now, commit to the daily focus on you. Your power lies within the daily work. Spend time with you today, okay?

Healthy eating day after day can get a bit much when everyone around you is enjoying cheesecake and chips. You know it's worth it in the long run but sometimes you just want a treat. Instead of gritting your teeth and feeling deprived when the chocolate cake or pizza calls you name, follow these guidelines to have your cake and eat it too.
1. Budget for it
If you're counting calories, allow 100 - 200 calories from your total daily calorie allowance for treats. Try not to use them everyday and "save up" for a special treat once a week.
2. Need dessert?
If you really want a dessert, balance your indulgence with a light main course. Eat something like a large bowl of vegetable soup or a chicken salad so that you're not too over the top on calories.
3. Portion control
Now and again, have whatever you like but just a tiny portion so you get to taste it without a huge calorie consumption. Eat your treat very slowly and enjoy every bit. For example, a single small scoop of chocolate chip ice cream eaten with the tip of a teaspoon will give you every bit as much enjoyment as a whole plateful gobbled down at lightening speed.
4. Work it off
If you really must have something, work out how many calories it is and how much exercise you'll need to do to work it off - then do that exercise and earn your treat. You can do your chosen exercise afterwards but this one normally works best if you make yourself burn the calories first. You may be amazed how much effort it is for a piece of cake and it will put you off cheating in future!
5. Plan it
Once a month allow yourself a day off. Choose whatever you like to eat but don't stuff yourself silly. If you have been on a program which promotes healthy eating (rather than diet deprivation) you may be surprised at how much your tastes change so that after a month you don't even enjoy the junk or want it as much as you thought you would.

Weight loss supplements - tools for your weight loss arsenal
I have said it before - weight loss is a matter of burning more calories than you consume. However, any time you can use a tool to make things easier - why wouldn't you? Weight loss supplements are a tool that can help you speed your metabolism, curb hunger, or even absorb some of your calories which come from fat or carbs.
Here is a brief introduction of some weight loss supplements in the different categories:
- Thermogenics are usually a stimulant which contains one or more of the following: Ma-Huang, Caffeine, Green tea, Synephrine, or Guarana. The goal of thermogenics is to accelerate fat burning past the point of diet alone as well as give you energy and decrease appetite. Thermogenics are not for everyone especially if you are sensitive to stimulants or have any type of medical condition. Always check with your doctor first.
People who are overweight or obese are more likely to develop heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, gallbladder disease, and joint pain caused by excess uric acid (gout). Excess weight can also cause interrupted breathing during sleep and wearing away of the joints (osteoarthritis). Carrying extra weight means carrying an extra risk for certain types of cancer, including endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
Appetite suppressant - Hoodia is the name you will hear come up when you are talking about suppressing your appetite. It has been said that tribesman used hoodia gordonii before a long hunt in order to control their appetite. It is said that hoodia sends signals to the brain leading the brain to think that the body is full. If your weight loss efforts seem to be hindered by a massive appetite - Then perhaps hoodia is for you. Look for pure hoodia on the label.
Carb Blockers - Carb blockers reportedly prevent the body from absorbing some of the unwanted starches. The active ingredient is phaseolus vulgaris otherwise known as white kidney bean extract. I don't think anyone believes that taking a carb blocker will give you free access to all the carbs you want to consume but may be of benefit to the occasional cheater.
Fat Blockers - The active ingredient in a fat blocker is Chitosan. Chitosan has the ability to bind fats and cholesterol before they are absorbed by the body. Taken right after a meal, fat blockers will absorb some of the fat from your diet and allow it to pass through. Some reports indicate that Chitosan can absorb 7 times its weight in fat. Chitosan is a fiber derived from the shells of shellfish such as shrimp. Choose your weight loss supplements wisely. Purchase a well known brand from a reputable dealer and expand your weight loss tools arsenal.

What is Obesity?
Obesity means an excessively high proportion of body fat. Overweight refers to an excess of body weight, but not necessarily body fat. Health professionals use a measurement called body mass index (BMI) to classify an adult's weight as healthy, overweight, or obese. BMI describes body weight relative to height and is correlated with total body fat content in most adults. Generally, the higher your BMI, the higher your health risk, and the risk increases even further if your waist size is greater than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women.
Most overweight people should lose weight gradually. Sometimes, people with serious health problems associated with obesity may have legitimate reasons for losing weight rapidly. If so, a physician's supervision is required. Experts recommend that people who are overweight or obese should concentrate on engaging in regular physical activity and maintaining healthy eating habits.
See your doctor for advice about your overall health risk and the weight loss options that are best for you. Together, decide whether you should go on a moderate diet or whether other options might be appropriate. Check with your doctor and make sure that your health status allows lowering your caloric intake and increasing your physical activity.
Successful weight loss and healthy weight management depend on sensible goals and expectations. Doctors, dieticians, and other experts agree that the best way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories and increase your physical activity. Follow a calorie-reduced balanced diet that provides for 1-2 pounds of weight loss a week. Be sure to include at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables, along with whole grains, lean meat and low fat dairy products.
Make time in your day for some form of physical activity. Walking is an excellent form of physical activity that almost everyone can do. In addition to helping to control weight, physical activity decreases the risk of dying from coronary heart disease and reduces the risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, and certain cancers.
