* Use two egg whites (34 cal.) for cakes instead of one egg (82 cal.).

* Choose diet margarine (50 cal.) instead of the regular margarine (100 cal.).

* Choose cereals with the least calories then add fresh fruits to be more nutritious.

* In parties, good substitutes for snacks are carrot strips, pickle slices, and raw mushroom caps.

* Drip away fats by cooking hamburgers on the rack.

Set your rules and stick to them

* Don't skip meals, especially breakfast which must remain copious. Have a light evening meal ;

* Don't eat apart from your meals. If you feel hungry between meals, drink a large glass of water, a coffee or a tea without sugar. Also drink before your meal and in the middle of your meal;

* Choose lean meats and privilege poultries without skin, fish and shellfish ;

* Attention with hidden fats : avoid meat prepared with sauces, fat pork deli's, cheese toppings, butter or cream, gruyere and eggs, fried foods, viennese buns and pastry, sweets and chocolate, ice-cream, and aperitif snacks;

* Eat vegetables at will and alternate the preparation: raw, cooked and as soup;

* Have two fruits a day, but not more


Choose the right cooking mode for your food

* Meat: roasted or grilled

* Fish: roasted, tinfoil cooked in the oven or microwave

* Make your seasonings and sauces as light as possible: use a little oil, butter or cream, then use lemon, yoghourt, a stock cube and soya sauce, finally season at taste with aromatic herbs and spices.


Determination above all !

While complying with these nutritional rules, to lose weight it is wise choosing the right energy foods. It is thus useful to be informed about the nutritional value of food. It's up to you to stay motivated and not to yield to temptations. The first week will be the most difficult one, but when you notice that you lost 2 pounds already, you will keep going. 1. Eat protein at every meal, including breakfast.

2. Eliminate wheat- and flour-based products for the time being. And yes, that definitely includes bread and pasta.

3. Eat unprocessed foods. Ninety percent of what you eat should be a combination of (in this order of importance) raw vegetables, steamed vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and maybe a few fruits if necessary.

4. Reduce starch to one portion a day, and don't eat that portion during your evening meal. Best choices are beans, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal.

8. Stop using vegetable oils such as sunflower, safflower and corn. The supermarket kind is highly refined, and it oxidizes easily when heated, contributing to arterial plaque. Use olive oil instead, and apply it to food after the food is cooked when possible.

9. Watch which types of fat you're eating. The amount of fat you eat is probably less important than the kind of fat you eat. The worst are fried foods, margarine and foods that contain hydrogenized or partially hydrogenized oils. The best is omega-3, found in fish and flaxseed oil.

10. Obsessively drink water: At least 8 ounces for every 20 pounds of bodyweight you're now carrying around, each day. Every day. No excuses.

50 Motivational Tips for Exercise and Weight Loss


No matter who we are, we all have days when we just do not feel like exercising. The weather might be grey, you've had a busy day, or you might just be bored with your program. Whatever the reason, you just don't feel like it!


It's on these days that we need that extra motivation. I've been exercising regularly for most of my life so I've had plenty of those days. To get me through, I've compiled a list of tactics to help motivate me.


Read something inspiring!

It could be a biography, quote, poem, or song. Use other people's experiences to give you that lift.


Start a walking group!

It's more social and you all get to feed off the motivation of each other.


Think of exercise as a menu rather than a diet!

Make a list of activities and choose 1 each day.


Use a training journal!

By keeping track of your activities you can see the improvements in your fitness week to week.


Start an interest or hobby that requires physical fitness!

It could be bushwalking, rock-climbing, tennis, golf, or scuba-diving. If you require physical fitness to enjoy the activity you will be more inclined to train for it.


Increase your incidental activity!

This is the amount of activity you do in your normal course of your day, the activity not generally classed as exercise. You could: walk to work, take the stairs instead of the elevator, get up to change the channels instead of using the remote, or play with the kids for 15 minutes per day.


Try cross-training!

If your exercise program is always the same then break it up with one session per week of swimming, bike riding, jogging, sprints, or circuits. You could even play a different sport and use it as a training session.


Use a Personal Trainer!

Personal trainers can provide motivation as well as training variety.


Use an exercise video!

If exercising in public places is not for you, then try training at home. There are many forms of training available on video including: boxing, aerobics, pilates, and yoga.


Just start!

You will always be able to find excuses not to train so don't think about it, just walk out the door.


Listen to music!

Put on the stereo or use a walk-man. Music certainly helps the time go faster.


Watch TV!

Most fitness centers currently have a cardio theatre where you watch your favorite shows whilst you work out.

So you want to lose some weight? Here are 6 tips that will help you melt some body fat and lose some unwanted weight.

1. Throw away your scale

First off throw away your scale (okay don't literally do that). You naturally gain and lose weight throughout the day due to slight changes in your metabolism and how well hydrated you are. Body weight is not always an accurate measure of a healthy body composition. Instead you should focus on your body fat percentage.


There are many inexpensive tools available to measure your body fat. Many electronic scales now come with electronic body fat measurements. These can be fairly accurate although they can have up to have 25% margin of error depending on your hydration levels (and if your taking supplements). If possible visit your local gym to get a body fat test. The caliper test (pinch test) can be very accurate. Also ask about getting your basal metabolism measured. Your basal metabolism is how many calories your body burns a day at rest. There are now many devices such as bodygem that accurately measure this.


2. Get off the treadmill and hit the weights

Unless you train cardio like Lance Armstrong you must do weight resistance exercise if you want effectively lose weight (i.e. bodyfat). The obvious goal of resistance exercise is to gain more lean muscle mass. One pound of lean muscle burns up to 50 calories a day in comparison to one pound of fat which burns around 9 calories a day. If you are able to gain 10lbs of lean muscle mass you will be burning an additional 500 calories a day. At this rate you will lose 4 lbs of bodyfat a month.


Don't get me wrong about cardio; I think it is also extremely important for your weight loss program. It also has a benefit list about a mile long from decreasing your chances of heart disease to lowering depression. However you must put your weight training program before cardio if you really want to lose body fat. If you are unfamiliar with weight training exercises it may be a good idea to hire a personal trainer to get you acquainted with the gym. Also try subscribing to magazines such as Men's Health and Shape which often write beginner programs for people looking to start weight training programs.


If you are woman and are afraid of "bulking up" please repeat after me, "I will not become bulky from weight training". This is perhaps the single biggest misconception that women have about weight training. This is due to the fact "bulking up" requires certain anabolic hormones that occur in much high percentages in men. Unless you are a female body builder taking steroids your chances of bulking up are slim to none. Weight training will only leave you with a toner, slimmer better figured physique. 3. Mix it up

Fitness professionals use the fancy term "periodization" for adding variety in workouts. Periodization is a strategy to keep your body from hitting plateaus in training. A suggested cycle would look like this.


-Phase 1:

4-6 weeks of heavy resistance exercise (6-12 reps per set). Please limit cardio to 1-2 days week. Yes I do mean only 1 to 2 days a week of light cardio. Intense cardio can inhibit your weight training efforts to put on more lean muscle mass for the end goal of a higher metabolism.


-Phase 2:

4-6 weeks of moderate weight training/cardio. This phase is when you already built up some muscle. Now is the time to add some cardio on top of your elevated metabolism to reduce fat stores. Your week should have 3 days of cardio workouts and 3 days of resistance exercise.


-Phase 3:

1-3 weeks of mostly cardio and some weight training. You should be doing 5 days of cardio and 2 days of full body weight training.

After this cycle is complete repeat back to Phase 1.


3. Your Diet

This is probably the most confusing and misrepresented component of health weight loss. I've decided to break it down to a few key points


-Eat 5-6 small meals a day. Eating the traditional diet of 3 meals a day will inhibit your weight loss goals for several reasons. When you go past 4 hours without a meal your blood sugar levels begin to drop. When you finally do eat your insulin levels spike which encourages your body to store more calories as fat. You are also much more likely to binge which pushes your stomach out further and leaves only more hungry for the next meal


-Eat whole grains, fiber and veggies. Okay I know you've probably heard that million times. But complex carbs (not sugars), fiber and good fats (peanut butter) are crucial for your weight loss regimen. If you really miss your tasty fatty foods allow yourself one day a week where you can eat whatever you want. If you break this rule you will end up just cheating yourself.


-Drink up! Not only does water help your body recover quicker and keeps your skin looking healthy but it can help you burn more calories too. How? Try drinking ice cold water. It requires more energy from your body to warm up and will help you burn some additional calories.


4. Get to bed!

I know sleep is becoming a more of a luxury in modern day America. But not getting a full night of sleep (6-8 hours for adults) can make you fat! Here are a few reasons why:


First is lack of sleep interferes with your body's natural mechanisms from recovering from a workout. Remember that when exercise you are only creating an opportunity to get in shape. The final hours of a good night's sleep is when your body releases growth hormones to rebuild you're broken down muscle tissue. If you cheat yourself out of those last couple of hours of sleep you're cheating yourself out of gains from the hard workout earlier.


Lack of sleep can also throw off other hormones that regulate your metabolism and fat storage. Studies have shown that sleeping less than 5 hours a night can reduce bloodstream leptin levels by 15% (slowing down metabolism) and increases ghrelin by 15% (increase appetite).


Lack of sleep will inevitably make you less motivated to hit the gym because you are already fatigued! You want to be as well rested as possible before any workout. Get some sleep!


5. Supplements can help

I'm not telling you to go out and down a bottle of ephedrine every day. Supplements are intended to exactly what their name entails...they supplement your weight loss program. If you are on a weight loss program you should be taking a multivitamin everyday.

Weight Loss Plateaus -- 7 Easy Steps to Overcome It

Have you ever experienced this scenario before?

"I have successfully lost 15 of the 25 pounds that I want to lose, but now I am stuck at the same weight even though I am faithfully controlling my food intake and doing my exercises. What happened? Is the diet not working anymore?" Yes, many women over 40 start off their weight loss programs full of excitement and determination, and indeed you do see the pounds dropping off over the first few weeks.


1) Take Charge of Your Eating Habits.

It appears to be impossible for humans like us, but if you psyche yourself and develop fewer cravings, then slowly you'll submit to fewer cravings. According to one study of nearly 500 women, researchers found that women who received a daily 1, 200 milligram calcium supplement reduced their number of premenstrual food cravings by 54%.


That's great, of course.

However, the next thing you know is that your progress has come to a dead stop...

Go take a walk, listen to music or play with your dog instead!


3. Start off on the right foot: You got to eat something for breakfast every day. Not only will you start the day with your stomach feeling satisfied, eating breakfast actually kick starts your metabolism so that you'll burn more calories throughout the day.


4. Eat more often: Instead of eating 3 big regular meals each day, opt to have 5 smaller meals. After you eat, your body releases the hormone insulin, which causes your body to store fat. The larger the meal, the more insulin your body releases. But smaller, more frequent meals keep insulin levels lower and more stable. The less insulin you have in your blood, the more fat you burn, and the less you store.


5. Try water first: If you're feeling "hungry," try drinking a glass of water first before you go grab something to much on. Sometimes we confuse thirst for hunger, and end up eating more food unnecessarily. If the water doesn't make that hunger pang go away, you can always grab something to eat later. And the bonus is that the water would have helped you to feel fuller, so you don't have to eat as much!


6. Avoid snacks at night: After you've had your dinner, do not snack or eat supper. And never ever eat just before you go to bed. Take it from Oprah -- she says that one of her secrets to her successful weight loss is that she does not eat anything after 7:30pm... not even a grape.


7. Try a weekly one-day "cleanse": Choose 1 day in the week to cleanse your system by taking only vegetable juices. And please use fresh vegetable juices if you can, and avoid the canned stuff that are chock-full of sodium or added sugars!

Apply these 7 simple steps and you too will be able to overcome those plateaus easily.
