Does Weight Loss Result In An Early Death?

'Weight loss' is certainly the talk of the teenager, the adult and the elderly. It's hardly a surprise, why there are so many weight loss products, supplements, methods and drugs in the market to help you shed those extra pounds. But does weight loss result in an early death?

The answer is yes and no. It depends on your approach to weight loss.

People who cherish the idea of looking good adopt immediate measures, which are very harmful to the body.

The result. Adverse health issues towards the later part of your life that can even give you an early death. The 30-year long study undertaken by the Institute of Preventive Medicine at Copen Hagen University shows the same results. Out of the 2957 obese people studied, 268 of them died in 18 years.

Sudden weight loss methods are dangerous to the body. Stay away from plans and programs that offer immediate solutions. And it's unwise to follow heavy diet plans for a long time. Stick to short-term weight loss plans. It's safer as far as your health is concerned.

A word of caution goes out to the young generation who are recklessly out to lose the fat in their body. There are various routines, which you can follow to lose weight:

• Exercise regularly. There is no superior way to good health than work outs.
• Choose your diet wisely. More salads and fruits coupled with cereals and beans is healthy.
• Eat during regular intervals.
• Don't snack on oily food. Try low fat sandwiches for a change.
• Ask your family doctor about your body structure and he will guide you in deciding the right diet patterns for your body before you make any important decisions regarding your health, think about its pros and cons and decided if it's really worth a try.

Weight Loss - Simple Lessons for Sustained Success

 

Weight loss is a goal for many people today, but cutting through all the hype and getting quality information can be difficult. This article will give you information on your metabolism, nutrition, and exercise that you can use to evaluate weight loss programs that you may be considering, or to create your own. For healthy, effective, and sustained weight loss you need to be educated about how your body's metabolism works.

Your Body Does Basic Math
One of the most important factors that directly impacts weight loss is a concept called "energy balance." Quite simply, this is a measure of whether a person has eaten more calories than they burned that day, or vice versa. Because of all the scientific jargon, it can be baffling to read detailed descriptions of how your body and metabolism work. But when it comes to weight loss, all you need to know is that your metabolism does basic math - addition and subtraction; calories eaten and calories burned.



In order to begin healthy, effective weight loss, you need to achieve negative energy balance. There are two primary ways to do this - daily diet and exercise. We'll take a closer look at each very shortly.

However, it is important to note that most people who are aiming for moderate weight loss should not tip the scales too drastically into negative energy balance. For instance, if your daily activities result in 2000 calories burned per day, restricting your calorie intake to 800 calories per day would be excessive. You would lose weight, but probably not in the way you intended. Your body would see this drastic calorie restriction as starvation, and would begin hoarding body fat and burning muscle, in addition to losing valuable fluids and electrolytes, which is exactly the opposite of what you are hoping to achieve.

If you are at neutral energy balance and have moderate weight loss goals, then a calorie restriction of 500 calories per day will produce healthy, gradual weight loss. Be sure to consult your physician regarding appropriate levels of calorie restriction and activity if your weight loss goals are very aggressive.

Nutrition

There are two main factors that you should consider when evaluating your daily diet - total calories and composition. The term "total calories" is as simple as it sounds - the number of calories you have consumed in a given day. If you're already mindful of the total quantity of food you eat each day, and are good at estimating serving sizes, you're in a good position to determine where your current energy balance is, and monitor it as you progress. If not, it can be useful to purchase an inexpensive kitchen scale to get a better idea of how big a serving that you consider "average" really is. You need to know how many calories you're eating on a daily basis in order to know where you can make improvements.

Again, if working all the specifics out on your own seems difficult, there are high-quality programs available that help you specify meal composition, serving size, timing of meals and snacks, and even provide you with a shopping list. These programs can be helpful and convenient, but they are not absolutely necessary to achieve your weight loss goals.

Exercise

Exercise is a very important component of any well-balanced weight loss program. In its Guidelines for Healthy Aerobic Activity, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends 30 to 45 minutes of moderate aerobic activity performed 3 to 5 times per week. This can be as simple as taking a brisk walk through your neighborhood.

With this as a "base" of aerobic activity, weight training can be an excellent way to burn more calories and encourage development of lean muscle tissue, which burns additional calories even when you're sleeping! However, it's important to get qualified instruction in how to perform weight training in order to ensure that you are performing the exercises correctly, and not putting yourself at risk of injury.

Another key element in the exercise equation is moderation. If you haven't worked out in a year, you should not set a goal of running for an hour a day, five days a week. Begin moderately and allow your body to become accustomed to this new routine. When you're used to walking briskly for 30 minutes three days per week, consider increasing to four days per week, and so forth.

Regardless of what specific kind of exercise you choose, if you perform it safely , moderately , and most important, regularly , you will be in a much better position to achieve your weight loss goals. Remember, the goal is negative energy balance and exercise is another tool to get you there. If your daily goal is a 500 calorie negative energy balance, it can be much more pleasant to exercise 200 calories away, and only have to restrict your diet by 300 calories.

Conclusion

Successfully combining a healthy diet and exercise program is the best way to achieve and sustain your weight-loss goals. A pound of fat represents approximately 3500 stored calories. Using the above example of a 500 calorie negative energy balance, over the course of a week you would lose approximately one pound, for a total of around 4 pounds per month. Experts agree that this is a healthy rate of weight loss. More importantly, by taking a gradual approach, you are teaching yourself something far more important, which is behavior modification.

Crash diets may promise that you will lose five pounds a week, but if you revert to the same patterns of behavior that you were accustomed to before you started your diet, you'll gain the weight right back. No one becomes overweight overnight, so you shouldn't expect to lose the weight overnight either. Allow your body to become accustomed to healthy new habits, so you can sustain your success over the long term.

Weight Loss Setbacks and the "All or Nothing" Attitude

I want to talk about the "all or nothing" outlook that is death to any attempt to lose fat and get in shape.
You're probably familiar with this concept... you might be rolling along making progress at losing fat for a few weeks when a holiday rolls around (typically Thanksgiving) or during the summer you have some company that comes to visit for a week. Suddenly the rules you've been following go out the window: There are goodies all around, and with all the friends and family there's no time (or thought) given to working out.

 

The composition of your diet is also very important. With all the competing diet programs out there, it can be difficult to separate the science from the hype. The guidelines in the USDA's new food pyramid, called MyPyramid, are very helpful in identifying good food choices - whole grain carbohydrates instead of processed carbs (whole wheat bread rather than white), lean instead of high-fat protein sources (chicken instead of prime rib), and healthy sources of fat (olive oil instead of Crisco). These guidelines will serve you well in formulating a daily diet that will keep you well-nourished with sustained energy levels and feeling your best over the long term.

 

Next thing you know, you look at the scale and you've put on two, three or four pounds over the course of a week or two. Weight that you worked so hard to lose, and took you probably twice that long to take off. Your first reaction is probably to say "The hell with it, what's the point?" and go back to your old ways, and for good measure you probably end up even more overweight than where you started.

Believe me, that's completely understandable. The problem is that although the human body is a miraculous thing, it can also be brutally unforgiving when it comes to staying in shape. You can lose months of hard won fitness in a couple of weeks. I've always been big on analogies, and here's a simple one that I personally use when I "fall off the wagon" as far as diet and working out:

Instead of looking at a setback as a total car wreck, look at it as just a minor fender-bender. You see, although the body can be unforgiving, it also has memory, and if you get back to your regime you'll find that you will bounce back and reach your prior level of fitness/weight much faster than it took to get there the first time. So the next time you backtrack and put on a couple of pounds, don't throw your hands up in dismay. Instead, do an "Indiana Jones": Put that hat back on, pull down that brim, get that determined look back in your eye and get back on track!

Your Simple Plan for Weight Loss

 

The math is pretty simple. One pound of fat equals 3500 calories. Want to lose a pound a week? Then you need to consume 3500 calories less per week than you use. That's about 500 calories a day. By cutting out 500 calories a day from your normal daily diet, while keeping your activity level the same, you can lose approximately one pound a week. All right - that doesn't sound like much, especially if you're more than 25 pounds overweight. Study after study has shown, though, that those people who lose weight gradually - at a rate of 1-2 pounds per week -are far more likely to keep the weight off and maintain a normal weight for a lifetime.

So how much exactly IS 500 calories? If you're going to reduce your daily intake by 500 calories, it helps to know what you need to cut out, right? Here's how easy it is to lose 500 calories a day:

 

Use milk instead of cream in your coffee. Savings? 50 calories per cup. Skip the butter on your baked potato. Savings? 100 calories Drink fruit-flavored water instead of a 16 ounce soda. Savings? 200 calories Skip the Big Mac and have a salad instead. A Big Mac weighs in at a whopping 460 calories. A fresh salad with a light dressing? Less than 100! Savings? 360 calories

 

Pass by the bag of potato chips. An average snack size bag of chips has over 300 calories. Savings? 300 calories

Eat your corn on the ear. A 1 cup serving of canned corn has 165 calories. An ear of corn has 85. Savings? 80 calories.

Switch to low-fat cream cheese on your bagel. Savings? 90 calories per ounce. Love those fries and can't give them up? Swap the skinny fries out for thick steak-cut ones. Thin French fries absorb more oil than the thicker, meatier ones. Savings? 50 calories per 4 ounce serving If you'd rather look at losing weight from an exercise perspective, you can also lose one pound a week by upping your activity level by 500 calories a day. How easy is that to do? Take a look:

 

Take a half-hour walk around the park. Aim for a pace that's a little faster than a stroll, but not fast enough to be breathless. Burn: 160 calories. Get out your bike and take a ride. Tackle a few moderate hills and aim for about five miles total. Burn: 250 calories

Go dancing - and really DANCE. The longer you're out on the floor instead of at the table drinking up high-calorie drinks, the more you'll get out of it. Dancing that makes you breathless and warms up your body will net you a nice calorie savings. Burn: 400 calories for one hour Swimming is great for you, and a lot of fun, too. The water resistance means you burn more calories, and you avoid the stress impact on joints from aerobics, dancing or walking. Do a few laps at a slow crawl - if you can get up to an hour you'll be doing great!

 

Burn: 510 calories

Get out into your garden. An hour of gardening tasks that includes bending and stretching can burn up to as many calories as a brisk walk. Burn: 250 calories. Play a game of tennis. Hook up with a friend for a weekly tennis game and you'll be amazed at the difference. One hour of vigorous tennis is one of the best calorie burners around. Burn: 800 calories

 

It's important to keep in mind that all exercise/calorie numbers are based on a woman weighing 130 pounds. If you weigh more, you'll burn more. Want an added bonus to burning calories through exercise?

When you exercise, you build muscle by converting it from fat. Three guesses which kind of body tissue burns more calories - even when you're not exercising. You got it - your body uses more energy to maintain and feed muscle than it does fat.

 

For best results, mix and match food savings with exercises that burn calories. Do keep in mind that eating less than 1000 calories a day for more than a few days will convince your body that it's starving and slow your metabolism. Keep calorie ranges reasonable, and consult a doctor if you want a quicker, more drastic weight loss.

Weight Loss for Good - If Only You Had Known?

 

IF ONLY YOU HAD KNOWN!
I didn't have much time to pack my bags that day; matter of fact, I'm still wearing the same clothes I put on that morning .I met all three of them on the way up here. They said they would hitch a ride, but they were not sure they would be welcome where I was going.

I thought it was unusual to learn how much they knew about me. Did I meet them at some restaurant my family and I went to? Did I see them at the doctor's office? I know, maybe it was at a bunko party or the golf course? I just couldn't put my finger on how I knew them until today.

It's pretty nice here though--peaceful, always something to do, good conversation. However, I sure miss my family. I wish I didn't have to leave them soon, but how would I have known?

The three of them said they warned me time and time again. How? When? Where? I wondered. I thought I read all the right books and talked to the right people. I even participated at times. Lazy was probably the one I got along with the best during that short time we spent together. He was the only transparent one of the three. Others might have thought if they saw us together we were twins. We were so much alike.

The other two were much more reserved and timid. Don't let those guys fool you. I learned quickly they were stubborn old boys with rough edges--two of the biggest know-it-alls I had ever met. They called themselves Denial and Pride. And if you ever met them, I think you would agree they were named correctly. As I crossed the line, I will never forget what they said to me as we raised our hands to each other and waved goodbye, "If only you had known."

The health of America is going to get worse before it gets better. Diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, heart disease--are all at epidemic levels. And for the first time in history the kids of today are projected not to live as long as there parents have. The only way for the health of America to get better is for all of us to be personally responsible, change our attitudes toward exercise, and support one another in the process.

The silent threesome of denial, pride, and lazy has been muted by the fantasy fitness land programs promises immediate results. This silent treatment is killing you from the INSIDE OUT.

Until a few years ago, it was thought that Americans were healthy. Of course, that's not true. We've had a health problem for years. We have had a head problem, too. Most of us think that by ignoring them, our bodies will miraculously get better. Doctor's saw this coming, but what did they do about it? My doctor's answer was, "Take two pills and call me in the morning." (Sound familiar?)

THE BUCK STOPS WHERE?
In the "good years," more money, more marketing and more-for-me attitudes enabled us to focus on making the big bucks. It allowed us to put off worrying about healthy bodies. The accent was on NOW and not later. But the fiscal wealth we accumulated years ago is NOW being drained by our physical healthcare costs. Eventually, our bad health will consume all the extra dollars we worked so hard to earn.

Some of the responsibility falls with the big corporations, insurance companies and hospital groups. But at the end of the day, the buck stops with YOU. The reality of this situation bites; however, the solution is not to ignore it, but to encourage people to embrace it. Many of you have either given up on yourself or just flat out are living in denial. Either way the choice is still yours. The fact of the matter is there is still hope for America and there is still hope for you, too.

Don't let the buck stop with you. If you don't know what to do, ask people like me to help you. Do what ever it takes, before it takes care of you!

Weight Loss and Disease - It's not the food that's killing us!

Whether coming from a close friend, the nightly news or from a letter in the mail, it's hard to face the truth at times. Hearing it can really cut to the core of our beings. Today, fitness books are mostly filled with advertisements, pill pushers and unrealistic programs that give people false hope. My intention is to give you real hope and with that you'll get straight talk.

It is not my intention to force anything on you or to come across in a harsh way. While the words may be tough to hear, understand I don't know how else to say what I have observed for all these years. We Americans have been HAD because we have not received the truth about what it really takes to be fit and to stay healthy. Quick fixes abound, but the truth is there are no quick fixes that really work…or that last. It is my responsibility as a fitness professional to provide you with the facts. It is my hope that you read this with an open mind and that you understand if you don't do anything about your health today, tomorrow you may say, "If only I had known."

Why have I allowed myself to get into this shape?
With life comes responsibility and with decisions comes consequences. It's your choice today to do something positive. Tomorrow it may be out of your hands. There are three underlying emotions that keep us from taking better care of ourselves: denial, pride, and laziness. Consciously or subconsciously, this threesome is the root of why most Americans have allowed themselves to get in the shape they are in. Are you one of them?

Chances are sooner or later one or all three will be riding with you in the car to the hospital. Have you found yourself saying these things?

Less is not more: Well, these cookies have zero fat in them, so that means I can eat twice as many and not get as fat? Have you every played that head game with yourself? Most of us have. We justify that if a food has less fat or no fat then we can eat more of it. NOT TRUE, it still has calories. Do not forget the basic principle to keeping your weight down; calories in - calories out!


"My diet is not that bad." "A few trips to the fast food joint once in awhile won't hurt." "My blood pressure is fine today. It wouldn't hurt if I skipped a day of taking my medication." "My New Year's resolution next month is to get in better shape." "Why have I let myself get this out of shape?

DENIAL
"It won't happen to me…no way, no how!"
Unfortunately, it is what we cannot see that is killing us. Our insides are getting eaten away because of our lack of exercise and poor eating habits. Society is so concerned with extreme makeover television shows that we have been caught off guard with the silent killers: heart disease, diabetes and obesity. Even if the outside looks good, the damage is still done inside our bodies. Over time we have made ourselves feel comfortable with certain lifestyle habits. We overlook the long-term consequences of our behaviors. We see things going on around us, but we continue to put off exercise and eating better for another day. Out of the three, Denial is the sneakiest beast of them all.

PRIDE
"Do not let them see you sweat or show any signs of weakness."
Ever find yourself saying one of these? "If I cannot do it on my own, then I will not do it at all." "Just the very fact of having to take better care of me, irritates me." "I'll put off my check up until next fall."

Ever have any of these thoughts?
Denial's brother, Pride, may not be the sneakiest, but he is the strongest personality of the boys. Having too much pride costs millions of lives every year in any arena you can imagine, especially in health and the aging process. While pride may be the strongest emotion out of the three, he always seems to lose. His ego gets the best of him and aging finally wins out in the end.

LAZINESS
"I'll start tomorrow on my exercise program."
Exercise and eating right takes discipline, and planning. For some, that's too much to ask. If that's you, you may be missing out on a really wonderful healthy quality filled life. But, does that really matter to you?

Why is America the fattest nation in the world?

Laziness! It's just that simple. If you think a pill, surgery, or wishful thinking is going to replace hard work you have been HAD by the media. It takes hard consistent work. Having Lazy as a friend may cost you your life someday. Why are most countries healthier and thinner than us? They are more active and more resourceful. Denial, pride and lazy can be the end for some, but it does not have to be that way for you, if you start now. Sometimes we can think too much and talk ourselves out of things, instead of just doing it right.

Yes, food is a big part of the epidemic we face today with diabetes, obesity and heart disease. However, the real things that are killing us are inside of you already. Don't let Pride, Denial and Lazy eat you alive. Quit making dumb excuses not to feel better. Let people like me help you. I don't even know you and I have to believe you want it in your heart to feel better, lose some weight and have more confidence.

Weight Loss with Non Fat Foods? - More is NOT better!

Studies show that most Americans are fifteen percent fatter today than they were in the early ninety's. Wouldn't you think with all the non fat foods on the store shelves that maybe we would be losing weight verses gaining? Two reasons for this, one is physiological and the other is psychological.

Empty Calories: I like to use the phrase empty calories when it comes to non fat foods. In most cases, in order to be able to label a food non fat, most of the fats in it must be taken out. DA! However, the body uses fats as a mechanism to burn more fat. In other words, fat is used as a fuel in the body. If you take out certain types of fats out of the food, then the body looses its efficiency to burn fat. This slows down the metabolism. While on the surface you think that you are doing yourself a favor by eating non fat foods. However, where people make the mistake is a big portion of their daily diets consist of non fat types of foods.

Tip: While cutting down fats in your diet are essential, do not go over board in consuming non fat foods. MORE IS NOT ALWAYS BETTER!

Tip: Just because it says, "NO FAT" does not give you a permission slip to eat twice as much. Empty calories can be harder to burn off than good fat calories.

The key to weight loss is balancing good fats with your total daily intake. Plus exercise! In the case of food or exercise, having the attitude of doing more or eating more can have a more devastating effect on your ability to lose weight long term than anything. Work on your unwanted behaviors first and maybe you will not look at Non fat foods like they are

As I'm surfing the tube, I notice a huge amount of weight loss infomercials. And you know what, most of them literally make me sick to my stomach. Not because I despise TV, but because I can't stand it when companies blatantly lie to unsuspecting consumers and make MILLIONS in the process doing it.
