Weight Loss Facts If you take anything away from reading this article it is my hope that you will fully understand and be able to differentiate weight loss facts from fiction. To put it plainly, no diet in the world is going to help you lose weight and keep it off permanently. This is especially true if you buy into the latest fad diets touting high protein/high fat intake while strictly limiting your ingestion of carbohydrates. What these diets fail to tell you is that many of the foods that are richest in essential vitamins and minerals are considered carbohydrates--more specifically, complex carbohydrates.

Fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, and whole grain products are all beneficial to our health because they are high in antioxidants, fiber, protein, and minerals that our bodies need to thrive.

If you cut out these complex carbohydrates because you are afraid eating them will make you fat, you are doing your body a huge disservice. Likewise, if you take in too much protein from high fat sources, such as beef and lamb, you are further complicating matters. Meats high in saturated fats lead to clogged arteries, obesity, vascular problems, and a feeling of sluggishness.


Unfortunately, the media does not want Americans to understand the true weight loss facts, because if we did they would lose millions of dollars a year in revenue. Think about all of the products on the market today that are geared towards weight loss, such as high protein bars, zero carb cereals and breads, and a host of supplements. My new personal favorite is the cream made from a cactus that you rub on your body externally to accomplish weight loss. If we become educated enough to realize that we do not necessarily need to buy such products to lose weight and feel great, these companies would go bankrupt. Therefore, they are willing to spend millions of dollars a year in advertising to cover up the real weight loss facts and keep us hooked on their products. People are so desperate for a weight loss super pill they seem willing to try anything except common sense.


It Is Time You Understood the Real Weight Loss Facts If you want to lose weight and keep it off you must do two things--exercise regularly and eat a diet that limits saturated fats, preservatives, sugars, and sodium. Aim for foods that are in their natural state, and avoid those pesky middle aisles of the supermarket that are stocked with prepackaged foods. Take time to prepare a healthy meal for yourself every evening, and strive for better food selections when eating out. The end result is that you will begin to see those pounds melt away, your energy will increase, your sleep will improve, and your outlook on life in general will be much brighter. Sure, it takes time, but aren't all things worth having worth working for? I think so.

If you want to boost your metabolism, lose weight faster and keep the weight off, you need to maximize your weight loss program and calorie burning to get rid of obesity, meaning stored fat. Weight loss diets are not the only solution to lose weight, neither exercise alone. An effective weight loss program includes the combination of a postive attitude, a balanced diet, weight lifting, aerobic exercise, and having the right nutritional supplements. Exercises will help you to keep your body toned and avoid excessive stretch marks for losing weight.

Let me clarify a myth about weight lifting that helps you burn more calories. There is a myth that weightlifting will make you develop big muscles. This is not true. To develop or build big muscles, you would need to have a detailed weight lifting body building program. However, practicing basic weight lifting, including dumbbells, will help you maximize your calories burning mode and tone your body, not make you look big.

Weightlifting, meaning using weights between 5-50 pounds approximately, will help you keep lean muscles, improve strength, muscle definition, flexibility and coordination to help you lose fat.

Lifting weights actually help you reduce body fat not only because you burn more calories during the workout, but also because you continue burning after training.

Hence, an effective way to maximize your weight loss program and calorie burning is to combine weight lifting and aerobic exercise. You can do this based on your needs. For example, when I started my weight loss program at 230 pounds, I did cardio exercise every day. I started with 10 minutes and gradually increasing to 60 minutes. I added weight lifting later because like many, I believed the myth that I was going to look very masculine by doing weights. It was only after carefully reading and experiencing with a basic weightlifting program that I realized how wrong I was.

In fact, I started seeing better results with my weight loss program when I combined all five ingredients: diet, aerobic exercise, weight lifting, positive attitude and my supplements. Most of all, my skin was tighter, and I was not getting excessive stretch marks as others who were losing great amount of weight.

Body Nutrients
The other aspect to maximize your calorie burning besides doing your weights and aerobics is to consume between 15 -30 gr. of protein within 30 minutes after your workout for muscle recovery. A good example will be to have a whey protein shake. Also, drink water throughout your exercise routine to replenish lost body fluids.

Protein helps you boost your weight loss, increase loss of body fat while reducing the loss of muscle tissue. Since protein requires more energy to digest, it burns more calories and helps your weight loss process.

However, prior to your workout, make sure you consume enough carbs to use as body fuel and not feel weak by following an extreme low carb menu. For instance, if you love pasta like me, then, this will be the right time to have your pasta dish. Ideally, have your starchy carbs (pasta, rice, potatoes) before 3 p.m. Cardio exercise will help you burn stored fat.

Bottom line, you must combine all key aspects for a successful weight loss program; nutritional supplements alone are not the solution. They work as supplements to help you accomplish your weight loss goal faster while providing you with nutrients. Another great way to boost your metabolism and set it for maximum calorie burning will be to drink green tea. Get your cup of green tea first thing in the morning, mid morning, and prior to workout. Besides, it will help you get rid of toxins.

Just do not forget that it is important to consult with your physician before starting any weight loss program.

Basic Weight Loss Exercise Routine
1. Aerobic exercise 3 times a week (30-60 minutes)
2. Weightlifting every 2 days

However, if you do not resist a 30 minute cardio, start with 5 or 10 minute session. Most important thing is to start doing your exercise. Enjoy it; do not condition yourself thinking exercising is a burden. Prepare positively, visualize the results, how exercising will help you burn that stored fat, develop that trimmed abs, toned arms, tight buttocks, and toned legs.

Same with your weightlifting program, start with 2 or 5 pounds dumbbells, try to set 20 minutes for your dumbbells or if running out of time, you can do your dumbbells while watching tv or taking a break from work. Bottom line, it is always better to do some exercise than none.

Hence, based on my experience and research studies, one can drop body fat by adding free weight exercises and practicing at least 3 times a week cardio exercises. Some of the basic exercise using free weights includes lunges, standing dumbbell shoulder press, standing dumbbell curl, standing triceps overhead extension, which is great to eliminate those flabby under arms.

Seven Keys to Permanent Weight Loss Success (Part 4 of 4)

This is part 4 of the 4-part "Seven Keys to Permanent Weight Loss Success" series. Key #6: Control your rewards You've heard it before. "Have a free day. Eat cheat meals." It sounds exciting, doesn't it? For several days, you focus on ultimate discipline. You eat perfectly "clean" and don't deviate from your diet ... not even a little bit. But that's because you have a great motivator ... the promise of a day or meal where you can literally go "no-holds barred" and eat anything and everything in sight!


For example, if your body does not get daily protein and the essential amino acids on a daily basis, it will steal it from your existing muscle tissue. Moreover, protein helps you slow down the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. In addition, it reduces hunger because it reduces insulin levels, making it easier for your body to burn fat. Plus, it promotes satiety, making you feel full, hence, having less cravings.


If you start to feel a twinge of guilt about your plans to assault the nearest buffet, you can simply flip to the pages of your favorite book and reassure yourself with the claim that this meal is necessary because it will boost your metabolism. It's okay. Have it all. Chow away. Stuff yourself. You earned it, and it won't make a difference, right?


Well ... maybe, and then again, maybe not.

Cheat meals, free meals, reward meals, or whatever names you choose serve their purpose. I know that I would not have jumped headfirst into my first physique transformation if I did not know I could dive back into my binge habits once a week. And it worked ... for awhile. I stuck to the program and was losing weight.


As time progressed, however, I noticed a few disturbing trends.

Monday to me was simply a countdown to the day I could eat anything I wanted. I was obsessed with it. Sure, I was eating clean throughout the week, but I could barely focus on anything else other than the idea that one day I would be going crazy. When that day came, I would actually plot out a course through the city so I could hit as many fast-food and donut joints as possible. We went to buffets and then hit the store and bought pounds of junk food to bring home and consume before midnight. I realized that this wasn't control. It wasn't even reward. It was addiction. I thought back to when I quit cigarettes.


How did I do it?

Did I stop smoking six days out of the week, and then have a day where I smoked as much as I possibly could?

My body was giving me a few clues as well. I would feel bloated, disgusting, nauseous, and would often get sick after a free day with a cold or sinus infection. I felt like I spent the first half of the week recovering from the last day and the next half barely holding on to make it to the next splurge festival. That's when I decided it was time for things to change. I did not want to remain a slave to food. I could not imagine going on like that for the rest of my life, but this was supposed to be a permanent change, right? So I put my foot down. I started with only allowing myself one or two reward meals per week. I called them reward meals because cheating is not what I was doing ... I planned them, and deserved them. After several weeks of this, I noticed a significant change: I was no longer desperate for those meals, I was enjoying my healthy meals more, and when it was time to have a reward meal, I didn't "waste" it on junk food or fast food ... I'd go to a nice restaurant, sit down, and truly savor it.


Then I began to focus on my portion control. I was still over-eating that one meal, and I would feel like I had a hangover for the rest of the evening. So I made a pact with myself that I would never eat so much that I couldn't have my other meals that day ... in other words, even with a reward meal, I'd control my portion sizes so that I was still ready to eat again after a few hours. This is when I suddenly found myself in the driver's seat. The food was no longer in control, I was. I still enjoy pizza, ice cream, and many other treats. But now I control my rewards. I don't have to go overboard. I don't have to use one meal as an excuse to jump into a pattern of binge eating for the rest of the weekend. I can decide, ahead of time, what and when I will enjoy my reward, and then eat just enough to satisfy my psychological craving without going overboard. I switched from a free day festival (like smoking a carton of cigarettes) to controlled indulgence (like enjoying a nice cigar).


Here's some final points to consider ...

People are 250% more likely to suffer a heart attack after overeating Most of the people I know who successfully lose weight and keep it off control their rewards and do not have a splurge meal Your metabolism takes more than a day of splurging to kick into high gear ... you are better off having a planned week of eating more calories, but from healthy foods


Key #7: Consistently refocus goals

This last key is perhaps the most important.

When I was digging through some old documents, I came across my original goals list. This was in 1999 when I began my fitness journey. My main goal was to reach 40" and I made a little side note, "if possible?" Imagine that. A 44" waist and I wasn't even confident that I could lose four little inches!


After my first 12 weeks, I did not have a 40" waist. I had a 38" waist. I blew past my goal. So my new goal became a 36" waist, which I new was my limit because I was "big-boned." 36" gave way to 32" and at 6% body fat I was able to slip on a pair of 30" jeans ... over a foot (30 centimeters) had been trimmed from my waistline.


Goals can change, and that's okay. Constantly refocus your goals. You may be capable of more than you imagine or currently allow yourself to be. Some of my goals that I created after learning the power to transform include running a half marathon and starting my own business, both of which I have accomplished and neither of which I would have thought possible in 1999.


To refocus your goals is to learn who you are. Maybe you thought you could lose 40 pounds of fat in three months, only to discover you lost 20. That's fine. Set a new goal to lose 20 more over the next three months. Maybe you thought you would never bench press more than 100 pounds, but just did 110 last week. Great! Set a new goal to bench press 150 pounds. As you learn your limits (or rather, how to move past them) don't be afraid to set your goals higher.


Don't make the mistake, however, of falling into the trap of not having goals. This is what many people do ... "When I reach 150 pounds, I'm going into maintenance." That is an excuse to settle, and settling means going backwards and ultimately falling back into your old patterns. By consistently raising the bar, you are able to remain fit. Fitness is about action and movement, not about complacency and "settling." If you want to live a fit and healthy lifestyle, you must realize you are not on a journey to trim fat or increase your running speed. Ultimately, you are in pursuit of greatness.



These points that were created by people just like you have illustrated that permanent weight loss success is a process, not an event. It relates to the people you interact with, the mindset you adopt, and your core beliefs -- even how willing you are to transform them. Studying these points is not enough. You must internalize them and take action. Only then can you become the journey to become your best.

Interval Training - The Best Weight Loss Exercise


Weight Loss Exercise Principles

If you have read the article called Exercise: Essential, then you can skip down to the next section, called How to do Interval Training. Read on if you need a reminder of the basic principles of exercise for weight loss. Aerobic exercise is fat burning exercise. As you do some activity using large muscles (legs, especially) that raises your heart rate but still allows you to breathe normally, your body will burn fat with the oxygen you're breathing. However, your body will only burn blood-sugar at first, because it's easily available. So, to get to the fat-burning stage, you have to exercise for at least 20 minutes, preferably 30 minutes or more. Walking and bicycling at a gentle pace are aerobic activities.


Anaerobic exercises are high-intensity exercises that get your muscles working hard, and you will have trouble breathing. The word "anaerobic" means "without air", meaning that you will be breathing fast, but still not getting enough oxygen to properly fuel your muscles. This leads to muscle strengthening, but it also means that you're burning blood-sugar only, not fat, and you end up with lactic acid that will make your muscles feel like they're burning. Weight training and sprinting are anaerobic activities. You can keep doing aerobic exercise longer than anaerobic exercise, and you'll burn about equal amounts of calories overall doing either. Aerobic exercise burns those calories from fat during the exercise. Anaerobic exercise only burns blood-sugar, but burns a lot of fat later (the rest of the day) to replace the energy. Is it possible to combine the two, so that you can burn fat while exercising, and keep burning the rest of the day?

How to do Interval Training

The "intervals" in Interval Training are alternating periods of high-intensity exercise with low-intensity rest periods. This allows a person to keep exercising for at least 30 minutes to kick in the effects of aerobic activity, but it is also intense enough to strengthen the heart and provide the long-term fat burning of high-intensity exercise. The idea is simple, but ingenious, and amazingly effective. You can do interval training using a time-measure or a distance-measure. If you prefer to run indoors in a gym's track, then there is probably a clock to watch while running, so time would be more convenient to keep track. If you prefer to train outdoors, it may be inconvenient to look at your watch every few seconds, so going by distance will probably be easier. If you use time, you should run as fast as you can for one full minute, then walk for two minutes. After that, run again for one more minute and rest by walking for two minutes. Keep repeating this three-minute cycle until 30 minutes have elapsed overall. If you prefer to chart distance, you will want to run about a half-mile, then walk for one-quarter mile, and keep alternating that.


Benefits of Interval Training

World-class athletes already know that Interval Training is the best way to improve almost every aspect of running performance. The fist effect is that high-intensity leg exercise, like running, will make your legs stronger. That means more muscle mass, and each gram of new muscle will burn that much more fat every minute of every day. The second effect of high-intensity training is what people call "cardio". That's short for cardio-vascular training, meaning that your heart as a muscle will grow stronger. This will prevent many forms of heart disease, as well as improving circulation, which has benefits for many aspects of life.


The most important benefit of Interval Training is that it is the single best way to improve your VO2-Max. That is the volume (V) of oxygen (O2) that you take with your deepest breath (max). VO2-max is the best measure of fitness and endurance. Increasing your VO2-max with interval training will give you greater endurance for everything you do, and the higher your VO2-max, the less you will feel that heat or pressure on your lungs when you exercise. Believe me, after interval training for a week, you will know without a fancy test that your VO2-max is improving, and soon you'll feel the improvement with every training session. It's a great feeling.


Improving Intervals

Using the time method is better than distance to keep yourself honest, because as you get faster, your half-mile will turn out to take less and less time. So, to keep improving your performance, and keep losing weight, you should either get a stopwatch, or else keep making your running intervals farther and farther (to make sure they still last a whole minute).


As your VO2-max increases, you may be tempted to make your workouts last longer overall, or to make the high-intensity periods last longer. You should do neither of these things. Your goal should be to keep intervals of 1-minute of running separated by 2-minutes of walking, and keep increasing the intensity of each running interval. If you make every interval a sprint for one full minute, and keep that up for 40 minutes, you are already a superhero. Longer workouts risk breakdown of tissues and a high burden on your kidneys and other organs. And if you make each interval longer, you may not be pushing your speed the most you can, which is where the benefits are.


At the other end of the scale, if you're just starting interval training, go easy. Too many men start off too fast and burn themselves out within 10 minutes. That will not benefit you. Warm up with a fast walk or a gentle jog for 10 minutes or so. Then, try your first interval. It should be for one full minute, but just try for a pace a little faster than a jog. Then walk for two minutes. For your next interval, just try to maintain that fast jog pace for another full minute. Then walk again for two minutes. Don't sit down or stop if you can avoid it, keep walking to recover. On your third interval, try just a little faster. If you can't make it for the full minute, you have just found out where your zone is. The key isn't to try to sprint right away and only be able to go for 20 seconds. You have to do the full minute at a constant pace, as fast as you can sustain for one whole minute. I guarantee that it will be pretty slow your first time. But try it again the next day, and you will be better. By the end of two weeks, you'll be amazed how much more fit you've become. I promise. The Whey To Weight Loss (Part II)


Effects on serotonin, blood sugar regulation, and more!

Although the above would probably be the major mechanisms by which whey could help the dieter, there are several secondary effects of whey that may assist in weight loss. For example, whey's effects on serotonin levels. Serotonin is probably the most studied neurotransmitter since it has been found to be involved in a wide range of psychological and biological functions. Serotonin ( also called 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is involved with mood, anxiety, and appetite.


Elevated levels of serotonin can cause relaxation and reduced anxiety. Low serotonin levels are associated with low mood, increased anxiety (hence the current popularity of the SSRI drugs such as Prozac and others), and poor appetite control. This is an extremely abbreviated description of all the functions serotonin performs in the human body - many of which have yet to be fully elucidated - but a full explanation is beyond the scope of this article.


Needless to say, Increased brain serotonin levels are associated with an improved ability of people to cope with stress, whereas a decline in serotonin activity is associated with depression and anxiety. Elevated levels of serotonin in the body often result in the relief of depression, as well as substantial reduction in pain sensitivity, anxiety and stress. It has also been theorized that a diet-induced increase in tryptophan will increase brain serotonin levels, while a diet designed for weight loss (e.g., a diet that reduces calories) may lead to a reduction of brain serotonin levels due to reduced substrate for production and a reduction in carbohydrates.


Many people on a reduced calorie intake in an attempt to lose weight find they are often ill tempered and more anxious. Reductions in serotonin may be partially to blame here. One recent study (The bovine protein alpha-lactalbumin increases the plasma ratio of tryptophan to the other large neutral amino acids, and in vulnerable subjects raises brain serotonin activity, reduces cortisol concentration, and improves mood under stress. Am J Clin Nutr 2000 Jun;71(6):1536-1544) examined whether alpha-lactalbumin - a major sub fraction found in whey which has an especially high tryptophan content - would increase plasma Tryptophan levels as well reduce depression and cortisol concentrations in subjects under acute stress considered to be vulnerable to stress.


The researchers examined twenty-nine "highly stress-vulnerable subjects" and 29 "relatively stress-invulnerable" subjects using a double blind, placebo-controlled study design. The study participants were exposed to experimental stress after eating a diet enriched with either alpha-lactalbumin (found in whey) or sodium-caseinate, another milk based protein. They researchers looked at:


* Diet-induced changes in the plasma Tryptophan and its ratio to other large neutral amino acids.

* Prolactin levels.

* Changes in mood and pulse rate.

* Cortisol levels (which were assessed before and after the stressor).


Amazingly, the ratio of plasma Tryptophan to the other amino acids tested was 48% higher after the alpha-lactalbumin diet than after the casein diet! This was accompanied by a decrease in cortisol levels and higher prolactin concentration. Perhaps most important and relevant to the average person reading this article, they found "reduced depressive feelings" when test subjects were put under stress.


They concluded that the "Consumption of a dietary protein enriched in tryptophan increased the plasma Trp-LNAA ratio and, in stress-vulnerable subjects, improved coping ability, probably through alterations in brain serotonin." This effect was not seen in the sodium-caseinate group. If other studies can confirm these findings, whey may turn out to be yet another safe and effective supplement in the battle against depression and stress, as well as reduced serotonin levels due to dieting.


Although there is a long list of hormones involved in appetite regulation, some of which have been mentioned above, serotonin appears to be a key player in the game. In general, experiments find increased serotonin availability or activity = reduced food consumption and decreased serotonin = increase food consumption. If whey can selectively increase serotonin levels above that of other proteins, it could be very helpful to the dieter.


Other possible advantages whey may confer to the dieter is improved blood sugar regulation (Frid AH, Nilsson M, Holst JJ, Bjorck IM. Effect of whey on blood glucose and insulin responses to composite breakfast and lunch meals in type 2 diabetic subjects. Am J Clin Nutr. 2005 Jul;82(1):69-75.) which is yet another key area in controlling appetite and metabolism. Finally, calcium from dairy products has been found to be associated with a reduction in bodyweight and fat mass. Calcium is thought to influence energy metabolism as intracellular calcium regulates fat cell (adipocyte) lipid metabolism as well as triglyceride storage. It's been demonstrated in several studies the superiority of dairy versus non-dairy sources of calcium for improving body composition, and the whey fraction of dairy maybe the key.


The mechanism responsible for increased fat loss found with dairy-based calcium versus nondairy calcium has not is not fully understood but researchers looking at the issue theorized "... dairy sources of calcium markedly attenuate weight and fat gain and accelerate fat loss to a greater degree than do supplemental sources of calcium. This augmented effect of dairy products relative to supplemental calcium is likely due to additional bioactive compounds, including the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and the rich concentration of branched-chain amino acids in whey, which act synergistically with calcium to attenuate adiposity."


It appears components in whey - some of which have been mentioned above - are thought to act synergistically with calcium to improve body composition (Zemel MB. Role of calcium and dairy products in energy partitioning and weight management. Am J Clin Nutr. 2004 May;79(5):907S-912S.).



Taken in isolation, none of these studies are so compelling that people should run out and use whey as some form of weight loss nirvana. However, taken as a total picture, the bulk of the research seems to conclude that whey may in fact have some unique effects for weight loss and should be of great use to the dieter. More studies are clearly needed however.


So what is the practical application of all this information and how does the dieter put it to good use?

Being the appetite suppressing effects of whey appear to last approximately 2-3 hours, it would seem best to stagger the intake throughout the day. For example, breakfast might be 1-2 scoops of whey and a bowl of oatmeal, and perhaps a few scoops of whey taken between lunch and dinner. If whey does what the data suggests it does in the above, that should be the most effective method for maximizing the effects of whey on food (calorie) intake on subsequent meals as well as the other metabolic effects covered.
