Although the basis of this dieting myth is elusive at best, it is possible that its creator heard about the new Ephedra substitute, synephrine, found in the outer peel of Citrus aurantium also known as the Seville orange or bitter orange. Synephrine is marketed as an ephedra substitute that increases metabolic temperature, utilizing a greater amount of fat stores as energy during a workout. Synephrine is closely related to ephedra, increasing thermogenesis (your body's production of heat by burning fat), appetite suppression as well as increasing energy.
Although manufacturers of synephrine claim that it possesses all the beneficial characteristics of ephedra, without posing the health threats associated with ephedra, some recent data suggests that synephrine may be just as harmful as ephedra. For example, one such study found that synephrine not only causes hypertension and increases heart rate, but also interacts with other prescription medications, affecting their metabolism

Diets don't work!!!
We all know this to be a fact but we still keep looking for the next new diet to try. Some diets have been around for years and are still going strong. I'm not talking about diet plans but silly little diets. Take the Cabbage Soup Diet for instance. This diet has been around for at least 15 years that I know of. Does it work? Yes it works. As long as you are eating only cabbage soup you will lose weight. The problem is you can't just eat cabbage soup for the rest of your life. Or maybe you can but it's not likely that you will. Eventually you have to go off this diet. You start eating like you used to eat and the pounds gradually climb back on.
Although consumption of citrus juice in the morning does not increase your metabolism, citrus fruits are a good source of vitamin C as well as fiber. However, to get the beneficial effects of the fiber from citrus fruits, you must eat the fruit as a whole, not just consume the juice. There is some evidence that certain prescription drugs interact with grapefruit juice. Such interactions usually affect the action (efficacy and safety) of those drugs, so if you take prescription drugs, consult your doctor before consuming significant amounts of grapefruit or grapefruit juice.
Other diets like the rice diet, the oatmeal diet, the raw foods diet, the low carb diet, the high carb diet, and any other diet you can think of will also work. They work as long as you are dieting. Why do they work? Because you are controlling the amount of calories you consume. Even if the diet says eat as much of the food as you want, you can only eat so much rice before you get tired of it. So you naturally eat less and less.
These diets try to make you think the foods are special and have magic properties that make you lose weight. There are no secret foods that will draw the fat from your cells. There are no forbidden foods either. All foods are ok to eat as long as you are eating because you are hungry.
As soon as you stop the diet, you are right back where you started from. So if diets don't work, and you know they don't, what do you do if you want to take off the weight? You have to change your bad eating habits. Fact: If you are overweight it is because you have eating habits that are causing you to eat more than you body needs. (Unless you have a medical condition, of course. Most of us don't.) Many of these habits started when you were a child. Finishing everything on your plate is one big bad habit. Hurrying through your meal is another. Eating on the go will always add extra pounds. Eating out of boredom, eating while you watch TV, eating socially, these are all going to make you bigger.
Eating was meant as a means to sustain life. We must eat to live. Most overweight people will eat for any reason or no reason at all. Nothing else to do? Let's eat! Need to kill a little time? Have a snack! Watching TV? Grab a bowl of ice cream. If you break these bad habits, you will lose weight. Make food a necessary part of your life rather than the only driving force and you will lose weight. If you decide to go on a diet, you will increase you obsession for food. You will think of nothing but food. You will cheat because you can and you deserve it and you are the boss of you and for many other reasons. Don't go on a diet! You will only get fatter!

Mind Over Matter: Key Strategies for Weight Loss Success
Katie, a 33-year-old mother of two, has been on her share of diets over the years. From Weight Watchers to the Zone to Sugar Busters, she feels as if she has tried them all. While she has had moderate success in losing weight from time to time, she has never found a long-term weight loss solution. Her weight is a point of contention in her marriage; her husband-who also happens to be obese-wishes she were thin, but says he loves her anyway. There is hope for Katie and others like her who feel as if they're trapped on the diet carousel. The key to long-term weight loss success may not be the body, but the mind. Research indicates that those who have a positive outlook on life are more likely to lose weight-and stay thin. But how can you have a positive outlook when you've been burned so many times before? Is it possible to "will your way" to losing weight?
Fat is stored energy. What the body then conserves is fat. It does exactly what you don't need or want it to do, it slows your metabolism, burns lean muscle mass for energy and conserves the fat. The rapid weight loss that happens the first 30 days is water. Muscle contains about 3 times as much water as fat. So if you lose a pound of muscle you're losing 3 pounds of water with it. For instance, a baseball player might visualize his bat connecting with a ball, leading to a homerun. A soccer player might visualize kicking the winning goal in a soccer match. The same technique can be used by dieters. Visualize yourself as thin. Picture yourself in that dress that is now two sizes too small. Imagine stepping onto the scale and being pleased with the result. Visualize yourself saying "no" to that piece of chocolate cake or that plate of Fettucini Alfredo. These mind exercises can help to spur you onto weight loss.
When people learn they are suffering from cancer, they are encouraged to imagine their cancer cells being destroyed by healthy cells. You can follow the same technique in order to lose weight. That means imagining your fat cells being destroyed by thin cells. Through such a method, you can "think your way" to a healthy weight.
In addition, it is critically important that you maintain a positive attitude. Be forgiving of yourself. If you veer off your diet plan, simply get back on course with your next meal. Don't spend precious time "beating yourself up" over your failures. Instead, celebrate your successes-in a non-fattening way. For instance, when you reach a milestone-say you've lost ten pounds-reward yourself with a trip to an art museum or to your favorite coffee shop (but skip the cream and sugar). Marking milestones will give you a sense of accomplishment, a sense that you are triumphing over food.
Another helpful technique can be prayer or meditation. Some support groups even offer Bible-based weight loss programs that use scripture verses to help inspire. Taking stock of your life and handing your weight loss problems over to a higher power can be cathartic and may give you a sense of peace about your weight difficulties. It has been said that a clear head leads to a healthy body. Try praying or meditating ten minutes at the start of your day. Chances are you will feel refreshed and ready to tackle the weight challenges that come your way.
Yet another technique you might consider is role-playing. Grab your spouse or a friend and ask him or her to act out a situation in which you might be tempted to overeat. You'll be forced to come up with strategies to fight temptation. This rehearsal could prove to be quite helpful when a real life diet dilemma comes your way. If role-playing works for job interviews, it should be beneficial for your weight as well.
Mind over matter is not just a clever saying. It can actually be the solution to your weight loss problems. By using your brain power, you can develop the techniques needed to make healthy food choices. When your mind and your body are both healthy, you have the best of both worlds.

We as educated people need to start getting angry at all the junk aimed at us everyday. The average American sees thousands of ads each and every day for everything from diet pills to prescription drugs. Most promise a quick cure for whatever ails us. The weight loss industry alone is estimated to be over $35 Billion dollars annually, so marketing and ads play a vital role in keeping us interested and buying.
Now we have come up with RLS, (restless leg syndrome). This will probably be a new "chronic condition" treated by an existing prescription drug, allowing it to continue generating profits longer We need to start using our heads and understand what weight loss is and what it means. Losing weight alone is not the most important thing. We citizens of western countries are too fat. Losing fat and losing weight are two distinctly different things.
Also distinctly different is how we lose the weight / fat. A pound of fat equals about 3500 calories. To burn 3500 calories you would need to reduce your daily caloric intake by 500 calories per day for one week, while remaining constant at your current activity level, or you could consume the same number of calories daily and exercise more to burn 500 calories per day. To burn 500 calories through exercise you would need to ride a stationary bike, as an example, for about 1 & ½ hours per day at a rate of about 25 MPH average. Or you could do a combination of decreasing by 250 and burning 250.
The claims that you can "lose 30 pounds in 30 days" are weight not fat. To lose 30 pounds of fat in 30 days you would need to burn 105,000 calories in excess of what you eat, which I'm sure we all agree isn't likely. Claims aimed at fast weight loss are telling you, you'll lose weight not fat. Fat is harmful to the body not weight per se. Rapid weight loss through severely restricted caloric intake causes the body to react as if it were sick. It is conditioned to say "Oh Oh"; I'm in trouble I'd better conserve energy. I may not get more food for awhile.
You can't blame the ad agencies, or the diet program companies, people are being sold what they want to buy. They want a quick fix to a problem without sacrifice or change. The truth is once you learn what the body needs and how it works there is no great need for sacrifice. You can eat nearly anything you want, just less of it, and exercise more. We are just so conditioned to instant gratification, that we're always awaiting the next miracle drug to make us all look like Hollywood celebrities. The $35 billion is just giving us what we demand.
Obesity has grown by over 20% in the last decade, in spite of the fact we are spending $35 Billion a year on weight management products. Does that suggest to anyone maybe they aren't working?
