In the first part of this article we highlighted the importance of strength training while dieting to lose weight. I introduced the idea that underneath your body fat you have a strong musculoskeletal system. There's a lot of muscle mass and good, strong bones underneath all of that body fat. If you find a strategy to conserve that muscle, even while you're losing body fat, then you can have a much more successful weight loss experience and can end up with a strong skeleton and strong muscles at the end of your regimen.
The way to do that is to engage in basic weight-bearing strength training while you are pursuing a diet. You don't have to go crazy on this. I am not suggesting that you go to the gym and start pumping iron on the bench press, 50 reps a day, or that you exhaust your body with crazy workouts. It turns out that you don't even need to stress your body very much to maintain the current muscle mass that you have. Just 15 seconds of stress creates new muscle.
Remember, your body has a lot of wisdom, and it's trying to conserve calories. The body wants to get rid of muscles it doesn't need, and in order to keep those muscles, you have to prove to your body that you need them. Now the thing is, your body doesn't know why you need them. It could be that you're engaged in some kind of competition, it could be that you need to lift heavy things to survive. Your body doesn't really know the reason why. You can essentially fool your body by engaging in strength training, giving it the message that it needs to hold on to those muscles in order to survive.
So in as little as 15 seconds per muscle group, you can tell your body to hold on to your muscle mass. That's a 15 second bicep curl, for example, or a 15 second chest press, or a 15 second leg curl...you get the idea. To learn more on this, you can find a book called Power Factor Training by John Little and Pete Sisco. It gives you the lowdown on how to do this. The book speaks to bodybuilders, but it's actually the underground secret book of strength training for people who are 50 years and older. Senior citizens benefit from this training immensely. There are also many golfers who use this system to greatly increase their range and golf swing.
Women are additionally benefiting from this system - when you're dealing with the potential for osteoporosis when you get up in your years, bone density becomes crucial for your overall health. There is no better way in the world to make sure you have strong bone density than to engage in high intensity, short duration strength training exercises. Static contraction training is, in my view, the very best system of exercise for maintaining not just muscle mass, but also bone mineral density. You will also strengthen your ligaments and tendons.
The key is, as with all forms of exercise, to be sure to work with a qualified health professional before attempting this, especially some of the more high intensity exercises. You may want to ease your way into it and check with your naturopath, doctor or physical therapist to make sure you're ready for this. You don't want to injure yourself - that would set you back weeks. So take it a little bit at a time. Remember, your body will adapt slowly, so ease into it slowly. By doing all of this, you'll be able to conserve the incredible muscle mass that you have underneath that body fat right now.
Accelerated weight loss. The other benefit of strength training is that it greatly increases the speed of your weight loss effort. It will double the effectiveness of any weight loss program you're on. As mentioned in part one of this article, losing weight by calorie restriction alone is very, very difficult. In fact, personally, I've never been able to do that. The only way I've been able to lose body fat (I lost over 50 lbs. of body fat, and I've kept it off for several years now) is to engage in exercise that includes both a strength training component and a cardiovascular component.
My belief is that you cannot keep weight off just by modifying your diet alone, unless you happen to be extremely gifted with just the right genes that don't ever turn on the hunger signal for you. If you're in that situation, good for you. But you should probably think about exercising anyway, because of the other cardiovascular health and brain chemistry benefits that are derived from frequent exercise. Alternative training: Pilates. Now, some people say "Well, I can't join a gym, I can't exercise, I don't want to go to that website and look up static contraction training, I don't want to do that, I don't want to pump weights. What do I do instead?" There's a great solution for people who don't want to pump weights, and I understand a lot of women are in this situation, nothing wrong with that. You can be very strong without pumping weights if you follow Pilates.
Pilates is a form of body movement and flexibility training that was pioneered by Joseph Pilates almost 100 years ago. The guy was well ahead of his time. This is a system that I definitely follow today. The movements require a lot of strength, but not so much that you can't get started. There are simple ways to get started with Pilates on a mat that would greatly boost your muscle mass and your overall strength - especially your abdominal strength and your lower back strength. And then, as you gain comfort with that, you can move up to the more advanced movements in Pilates.
And you can even get Pilates equipment, which is rather affordable. The best place for that is Pilates.com, which is the website of a manufacturer of Pilates equipment. They have outstanding equipment. They even have an affordable home version of this Pilates equipment that runs only a couple of hundred dollars. Well worth the investment. What does this Pilates system do for you? It will give you strength training all over your body - in your hips, adduction and abduction muscles, abdominal muscles, lower back, traps, biceps, triceps, chest, upper body, lower body and especially in your midsection.
It will do all of this for you - I should say with you - without using any weights. So you don't have to set up a bench press with 200 lbs. and see how many reps you can bang out. Pilates can be done in a more artful way. It is a form of body movement that can be very yoga-like, if you choose, or it can be done with more power. This is why both men and women find Pilates to be a fantastic system of strength training. I know a lot of people in the performing arts community who rely on Pilates to maintain core strength and flexibility throughout their body, including in their arms, legs and neck muscles.
The cure for joint pain. I've got to mention this too: If you engage in Pilates, you may experience one of the benefits that almost everybody experiences when they do this for a couple of months: their joint pain begins to disappear. People always complain about their joint pain, it seems. When I'm at the gym, I hear guys in their 40s - they're only 45 years old! - and they're complaining and whining about how much everything hurts. They say, "Oh, wait 'til you're my age, everything's gonna hurt!" And I respond with, "I don't think so!" But I've experienced chronic pain, and I know what that feels like. But now I do Pilates and engage in outstanding nutrition and the pain is gone.
The body is designed to be healthy, and it's not supposed to hurt. If you feed your body right and if you use and mobilize all those joints, they will not hurt, even to the age of 100. There's no reason why we can't live to 100 in a state of perfect health with outstanding cognitive function, free of chronic pain. But to do that, you have to use it. I firmly believe in the concept of "use it or lose it." If you're not using those joints, then you're going to lose their range of motion.
Just ask any physical therapist, they will tell you much the same. You have to have range of motion in order to be free of pain. The difficulty is that as we get older, we tend to stop using all of those muscles and joints in their full range of motion. A lot of people who say that chronic pain is related to aging are really confusing cause and effect. It's not related to aging, it's related to the number of years that they've stopped using their body.
For example, take a person who is a dancer or someone engaged in yoga, Pilates or flexibility well into their 80s or 90s, and they won't have joint pain. If aging causes joint pain, then how is it that these people have no pain? The answer is because they keep mobilizing those joints, they keep using their body. They engage in Tai Chi or other gentle body movements. And they are free from pain. By the way, Tai Chi is another outstanding way to get range of motion, but it won't do quite the same thing for you in terms of muscle mass as Pilates training or other weight bearing exercises. (Tai Chi has many other energetic benefits, though, which are beyond the scope of this article.)
What's missing from all diets. The bottom line is if you are attempting to lose weight, or more specifically to lose body fat, then engaging in some form of strength training is crucial to your success. I know there are a lot of books out there that say well, you can just change your foods, or you can consume this one particular food like grapefruit or cabbage, or you can go on the popular low-carb diet. I know some people have success with that, but I think the vast majority of people don't really meet their weight loss goals just by changing their foods.
What's missing is that body component, the strength training, the movement, the flexibility, and also the cardiovascular training. What I'm suggesting is that you seriously consider finding a way to get some form of strength training into your life. It could be as easy as buying a floor mat or a DVD video on Pilates. Those videos are as little as $15 or $20. So your total investment, including the mat, could be only $40 or $50. And then you can engage in strength training.
Strength training, when you get into the advanced stages of it, is not so easy. You know lifting weights, even just for 15 seconds with high intensity, isn't always easy, either. When I do it, sometimes I feel like I'm about to pass out. It's such high intensity. When I do a leg press with a 15 second high intensity static contraction system - and I'm really not even anywhere near what some of the founders are - I'm pushing at least 1,500 lbs. I'm out of breath after that. I'm wiped out. This is hard stuff! It takes effort.
None of this is going to happen automatically, and if you whip through a strength training routine, and you don't feel like you've done any work, then you probably haven't. You're not going to get any benefit from that. At some point, it's going to require some effort to get these results. A lot of the information out there that claims you can lose weight without any effort is just flat out wrong. Certainly, there are some shortcuts. There are some strategies that can make it a lot easier for you, no doubt about that. There are some nutritional supplements that can help - I agree. But the bottom line is: if you don't engage the physical body, if you don't do some strength training and some cardiovascular training, you're not going to get the results you want.
Finding a workable system. Most people who are really committed to losing body fat are okay with the effort part. That hasn't been the problem. The problem has been finding a strategy that really works. What's a system that works? People tried the Atkins Diet or the low carb diet, and for many people that didn't work. People tried the low fat diet years ago - well that didn't work, because everybody just loaded up on carbohydrates and cookies. People tried all kinds of other things - they tried stimulants, things that make you shake all day long because you have a lot of caffeine in your system. And gee, they found out that didn't work either, because it just made them hungrier.
So, typically, it's not the effort that stops people. It's the reliability of the system. Finding out what really works is the hardest part. But I can tell you that no system will work without the physical body movement component. You've got to engage in strength training, you've got to engage in cardiovascular exercise, even if it's just walking for five minutes a day. If you can't walk, even just lifting your arms for 10 minutes a day, or lifting a 1 lb. dumbbell over your head 50 times will benefit you. I don't care what it is, if you can move something, then you can engage in cardiovascular exercise. There is no excuse, unless you happen to be paralyzed from the neck down, in which case obviously you can't engage in strength training. But for everybody else, there's no excuse. If you can move a limb, you can do this. Find a way to start strength training today, and your body will immediately start showing results.

There are, however, several reasons why getting a dog may be the best thing you ever do, in terms of weight loss. Having a dog can lead to several small but significant lifestyle changes that all add up, over time!
Regular Physical Exercise - In the context of physical health, weight loss is the process of losing body weight, usually by losing fat. To achieve healthy weight loss, most experts recommend a combination of healthy eating patterns and regular physical exercise.
Some people feel that just the act of getting a new puppy is weight loss measure in and of itself.
For one thing, a dog requires a minimum of one hour a day of walking - and that's every day, not just sunny days, and not just when you feel like it. Of course, you can just take the dog into the yard and throw the ball for it, but why not take advantage of your canine companion and go for real walks every day? It's better for you, and better for the dog. Over time, it gets to be very enjoyable. Until it's trained, it's more than likely to keep you on your toes - you'll be lucky to get a chance to sit down and eat, let alone cook! That initial crazy period usually ends pretty quickly, though. Besides walking, here are some other tips for easy weight loss with dogs.
Here's a great trick - feed any bits of food you don't want or think you shouldn't eat to the dog. For example, I haven't eaten a toast crust in over two years. I used to eat them just to be rid of them. It just seems wrong to throw them in the garbage, somehow. But feeding them to the dog is nothing more or less than symbiotic. You may not think this is a great weight loss measure, by the way, but I'm sure that all those crusts add up!
I must admit (and veterinary dog food purists, close your ears!) that it goes a bit further than that. What if you have made a yummy pasta dish, and there's just a little left, not really enough to be worth putting in a plastic container and saving? If it's not so good, I'd throw it out, but if it is good, that puts me in a spot. I'll probably either eat it outright despite being full, or pick away at it over the course of a few hours until it's gone. This can be avoided if you just simply and automatically give it to the dog. After all, dogs evolved alongside humans for millennia in exactly this way. They ate the leftovers of whatever their human companions were eating. Nowadays, the pet food industry cautions us against doing so, but if the food you're eating is reasonably healthy, who's to say that feeding small bits of it to the dog will do the dog any harm at all?
Personally, I have, on occasion, sunk even lower than that in canine gastrointestinal abuse. There is a brand of white cheddar popcorn, marketed as 'Smartfood' and sold in huge bags, with about a day and a half worth of calories in each. I love it. I love it so much I have been known to eat a whole bag over the course of a few hours. It's delicious. It's the kind of thing I should never buy a bag of. But if I do, and I've ripped into it, and it's disappearing, I can do damage control by periodically pausing in my binging to tip large amounts of the popcorn into a bowl on the floor, where it is just as quickly eaten up by the dog.
It helps to have a big dog. I don't know that any of these measures would work so well with a little one that can't eat quickly. It helps, also, if the dog is at least half black lab. They are purported to have iron cast stomachs, rather like goats, and this has proven to be true in the case of my dog - as proven when, at the age of eleven months, she ate four tubes of oil paint, metal and all. She ate all the reds, yellows and oranges, strangely enough ignoring the cool side of the color wheel completely - and, amazingly, suffered no ill consequences at all!

Many of us have had the experience of having early success with a diet or exercise plan, but this does not necessarily translate into long term weight loss or health benefits. In fact, many dieters are subject to a syndrome that we commonly call 'yo-yo' dieting, in which the same ten, twenty or fifty pounds are gained and lost repeatedly. That's the problem, really, with 'going on' a diet - it assumes that at some point you will be 'going off' the diet, and if you haven't changed your diet and lifestyle in lasting ways, that's when the pounds will start to creep back. The health consequences are more serious than 'just' obesity. Losing and gaining so much weight puts a real strain on your body, not to mention the psychological ramifications of such an ongoing issue. Of course, the ideal is this: you embark on a weight loss program, but instead of seeing it as a temporary thing, you change your diet and eating habits in lasting ways. You also monitor your weight regularly, so that any small weight gain is dealt with promptly. You are healthier as well as thinner, and you keep the good habits you have picked up for the rest of your life.

The taste may not be that great, to be sure, but there are easy ways around that - take it with fruit juice or yogurt, for example. Linoleic acid is available at a very affordable price, depending on the brand name. We have not noticed any significant differences between the various brands, though some naturopaths swear by a particular product or brand of supplement.
In a very real sense, there are no 'quick and easy' ways to effect weight loss. If you are overweight, you need to do the work involved to lose the weight, plain and simple. You need to eat less, and even more important, you need to exercise regularly. Linoleic acid, like any other supplement, will not actually make you lose weight if you are not doing anything else to effect that change. It would be appealing to think that it could, of course, but the fact is that it doesn't. Only your own hard work, exercise, and commitment to change - whatever it takes - will ensure your successful weight loss.
Once your weight loss is well established, however, there is certainly no harm in adding some supplementation to help you maintain it, especially if the supplement in question has been the subject of scientific studies that back up its efficacy, as linoleic acid has. So ask your natural health pharmacist or naturopath about this product to see if it can be effective for you. The precise way in which it works is not well known, but all the available evidence suggests that it does. Weight Loss - The Sleep Prescription
There are many reasons why people are more overweight nowadays than they ever have been before. It is true - as a society, obesity is becoming epidemic, and it's starting to affect people of all ages. The fact that more children are obese nowadays is especially worrying, for example. There are, however, some good reasons why this is the case, and if we can get to the bottom of the reasons behind weight gain, we can also use this information to come up with a weight loss prescription that really works.
One key component seems to be sleep. We all know how important sleep is - in fact, without enough sleep, our bodies may even undergo a complete physical and mental breakdown. Now there is evidence to suggest that a lack of sleep can also lead to weight gain. Here's how it works - not getting enough sleep leads to a general state of malaise - you just don't feel very well when you don't sleep. Our bodies instinctively seek to regain a feeling of wellbeing by eating - particularly foods that are high in carbohydrates and other sugars. When you eat a lot of carbs, there is a serotonin response that makes you feel better for a short while.
So, we look to food as a 'remedy' for lack of sleep, because in a sense it works - at least in the short term. Over time, of course, that leads to weight gain. So, conversely, making sure that you get enough sleep is a great way to kick start or to augment your weight loss plan. How much sleep is enough? It varies from person to person. A figure that is commonly bandied about is eight hours, but that's an average. Some people need less sleep than that, and will do just fine with four hours. For others, eight hours isn't quite enough - they need nine or ten hours, at least most nights.
How did our ancestors fair, considering that many of them had to be up at the crack of dawn to attend to farm chores? Actually, they did quite well, compared to us. They got to bed on time - sometimes with the sun, but always before midnight. I have heard it said that an hour of sleep before midnight is worth two after midnight. That may or may not be true, but what is certain is that today's modern lifestyle is playing havoc with our sleep patterns and that this has a big effect on weight and overall health. If you aren't used to getting to bed on time, here are some hints to get you started. First of all, maintain the same bedtime all the time, even on the weekends.
Likewise, you should get up at around the same time every day. Make your sleep and waking hours predictable, in other words. Some people think that they can 'catch up' on lost sleep by sleeping late on the weekend. Actually, while this might work in the short term, in the long term nothing could be further from the truth. Sleeping late on the weekends sets you up for a destructive pattern - you won't be able to get to sleep on time on Sunday night, and you'll start the week off with a sleep deficit.
On the other hand, naps, if they're short, can be a great way to catch up on sleep in the short term. Catching a short nap - half an hour or so - in the afternoon is a great habit to get into - in fact, most of our ancestors did precisely that. In fact, if you feel like you're short on energy in the afternoon, try a nap instead of reaching for a coffee of a chocolate bar. That's a much better way of boosting your energy for the rest of the day.
Just sleeping more probably isn't the answer to all your weight loss problems- it is, however, a great start. This simple measure can give you an improved feeling of wellbeing, which means that you won't be trying to 'feel better' by eating food that your body doesn't really need. Of course, another benefit is the fact that increasing your sleep means that you will you'll have more energy for exercising!

Choose Carbohydrates For Health And Weight Loss
A low carb diet can prove very beneficial for those who want to lose weight. But whether you're watching what you eat just to lose a few pounds, maintain health or follow a diabetic diet, a balance of what the body really needs should be kept in mind. Carbohydrates in and of themselves are not always bad. Despite some negative opinions about them, carbs are considered by many health professionals as necessary for the body. In fact, it is still recommended that adults get about six servings of carbs a day to maintain health. This, of course, goes along with other necessary foods such as dairy products, proteins, fruits and vegetables and more.
The key to eating carbs and doing it right is to go for healthy carbs and not going for them in abundance. It's when they're eaten in excess that carbs cause problems. Since carbs are famous for their propensity to turn to sugar and eventually fat in the body, too much is not a good thing. Keep in mind though that too much of anything is never good.
Carbs are considered to come in two forms: simple or complex. The simple carbs are processed - white breads, cakes, cookies and so on. These turn quickly to sugar and are either used up fast or transform into fat. Complex carbs take longer to break down and generally offer more sound nutrition. Complex carbs are needed by the body to feed the brain and other vital organs.
Cutting carbs out of a diet is a fast way to lose weight, but it jeopardizes the body's nutritional balance. Going entirely without is almost never recommended, but that doesn't mean eating an entire loaf of bread is in order either. Remember that even diabetics are allowed and even encouraged to get a few servings of carbs a day and it becomes clear they aren't totally horrible.
Going the low carb route, however, can really do a body good. Not every sandwich needs two pieces of bread, or any bread for that matter. Healthier choices do exist and they taste good, too. Instead of two slices, try an open faced sandwich or even pita bread instead. In general, complex carbohydrates are good choices for inclusion in a healthy diet that when combined with exercise can result in weight loss, maintenance or even compliance with a medically set diet.
Here are some ideas of more healthful carb choices for those who want to go low carb, not no carb:
* Go with whole grains instead of processed. Whole wheat is always a better choice than processed flours. Wheat breads, oatmeal and others such grains still offer carb options, but the unprocessed flours take longer for the body to break down, which means they also take longer to turn to sugar in the body.
* Whole grain rice. White rice is fine once in a while, but go with long grain or wild most of the time. These are once again harder to break down and generally offer more nutrients than processed rice.
* Sweet potatoes.
* High fiber cereals.
* Beans and lentils.
Complex carbohydrates are not the enemy. In fact, carbs are part of a balanced diet. The trick is to eat healthier carbs and follow basic nutritional guidelines. A low carb diet can be healthy, but a total exclusion of them is not.
Some nutritionists estimate that up to 75% of all people have undiagnosed food allergies. They may not be allergies in the way that we commonly think of them - that is, we may not sneeze or get a rash, or go into anaphylactic shock. But they are allergies all the same, if these foods provoke a negative immune response in the body. A good example is lactose intolerance - sometimes called a 'milk allergy'. People with lactose intolerance cannot digest one of the sugars that milk contains, and milk is harmful to their bodies. They might get a stomach ache, or they might develop a problem with phlegm in the lungs, windpipe or throat. Many people have a similar allergy to wheat or other grains, or to certain vegetables.
But what does this have to do with weight loss? Studies show that food allergies are a leading cause of weight gain. When you eat foods that you are allergic to, they aren't metabolized properly, and your body will hold onto the calories in these foods for longer, according to one theory. Also, some nutritionists feel that there is a correlation between your food allergies and the foods that you crave or binge on. Often, they are the same foods. In fact, if you eat the foods that you are allergic to, you can develop an addiction to them. Apparently, this is often the case with wheat and other carbohydrates.
Apparently, there are some people who are addicted to carbohydrates and sugar - if they eat just a little bit of these foods, they will lose control, and start to eat more and more. To make matters worse, these foods are not metabolized properly by those people, so the natural result is weight gain. In most cases like this, the underlying cause may be an allergy to wheat and other grains. If you decide to eliminate these foods entirely, it will initially be difficult - just as it's difficult for a smoker to stop smoking, or for an alcoholic to stop drinking. Once you do it, though, you will be able to reap the benefits. You will lose your urge to binge on these and other foods, and the weight will come off much faster.
If you are trying to lose weight, therefore, it is well worth your while to find out what your food allergies are, if indeed you have any. A naturopath will be able to help you discover this information, often using a process called 'vega testing'. This may be a little costly, but as more people are doing it, the cost is coming down. At the end of the the visit, the naturopath will give you a printout of the foods you should avoid. You may be dismayed to find that some of your 'favorites' are on the list - but if you are committed to your health and weight loss, give it a try. You may be surprised by how little you actually miss the foods you are allergic to once they are gone from your diet altogether.
Some people are skeptical about this process and about the whole notion that so many people are allergic to common foods. Why would so many people have this disorder? It may seem strange - even counter-intuitive. Think about the great variety of foods we eat today, though. In the past, people generally stayed in the same part of the world in which they were born, and they ate the food that was indigenous to that region. Nowadays, that's all but impossible. For one thing, people move around a lot more. Also, food doesn't come from the region you live in - it comes from everywhere.
Every food is available to everyone all the time, and that's very different from what it was like in the past. Therefore, there's a much greater potential for food allergies, because there are probably foods that you eat that your ancestors never would have seen. As a result, you may not have the necessary enzymes to digest them. You could, of course, try to eat as your ancestors did. For many of us, though our ancestors came from a variety of places, and there's no telling which set of genetics were passed on to us. Most people realize that cigarette smoking accelerates weight loss particularly in the elderly. But did you know that prolonged cigarette smoking could also cause weight gain. This is because there is a substantial amount of sugar in each cigarette that you smoke. Each time you take a puff, the sugar in the cigarette is sped immediately into your bloodstream causing insulin spikes and the metabolism to work more slowly. This is why cigarettes are a contributing factor to causing diabetes. It may take days or decades for you to experience the kind of weight gain associated with insulin resistant reactions to cigarettes; it all depends on your physiology and your family history. However if you can't seem to lose that last twenty pounds and are smoking like a chimney, those cigarettes you are smoking might be the culprit.
The best thing is that it takes very little time. How much time am I talking about? You'll be amazed to hear this, but literally, it's true: 15 seconds per muscle group per week. Only 15 seconds per muscle. If you engage that muscle for 15 seconds with high intensity contraction, then your body gets the signal that, hey, it needs that muscle. It needs to keep it around. And your body decides not to let that muscle go. It just keeps it, because it figures you need it.
Tobacco in itself is an adaptogen meaning that it can cause either weight gain or weight loss. Embracing the idea that cigarettes directly cause you to shed pounds is foolhardy. It is more likely that the cigarette displaces food cravings that are caused by emotional issues. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips every time you feel stressed, lonely, frustrated or angry you are simply reaching for a smoke instead.
Perhaps the biggest issues to do with weight and cigarette smoking is the fact that most people pack on an average of twenty pounds once they quit. This is a huge deterrent for many people when it comes to making the decision to quit and a huge motivator for young women who start smoking in order to stay svelte.
Quitting smoking can cause a huge shift in metabolism once your body realizes that the adaptogen tobacco is no longer running the show. Deprived of its favorite addictive substance the body goes into panic mode and starts conserving fat to react to the scarcity of nicotine. It is highly possible that the body perceives cigarettes and the sugar that they contain as a necessary source of food. Another reason for weight gain after quitting cigarettes is purely emotional. Most cigarette smokers have an oral fixation, which is why they always have a cigarette in their mouth. Without having the cigarettes around to take care of this oral fixation, the individual will start to appease their desire to always have something in their mouth by snacking.
Many cigarette smokers will also reach for candies which mimic the sugar hit of taking a draw on a cigarette and provide their body with a similar sugary spike in their blood sugar. Of course this is not good for your pancreas or your waistline. Unfortunately there is no one simple magical cure for dealing with the problem of gaining weight after quitting smoking. The key is to stay as active as possible, avoid sweets and avoid emotionally charged or stressful situations that might have you reaching for a cigarette or a snack substitute. Drinking cups of strong black coffee is also supposed to help cut the severity of these kinds of cravings and help you save both your lungs and your waistline.
