Weight Loss - The Mental Process

When you go on a diet and decide you want to lose some weight, most people think "I'll stop eating so much, maybe do a bit of exercise and be my ideal weight in just a few days". Sadly, these people end up disappointed and usually heavier than when they started. Dieting is not just a physical process but a mental one too. If you do not have the mental processes right then your diet will be a struggle and possibly fail. By having the right mental approach and being in control of your brain you can turbo charge your way to your ideal weight.

The first step in making any change is awareness.

So how do you get in control of your brain then?

Before I reveal that, you need to know that you are made up of two parts. You have your conscious mind, which is your ego - the part that chatters on all day. Then you have your sub-conscious, which is the part that grows your hair, your nails, pumps blood around your body and so on. This is a very powerful thing to know, because most people fail in their diets because they do not have the sub-conscious mind working with them, and so it sabotages their efforts. Consciously you want to lose weight, but sub-consciously you enjoy the extra weight for various reasons, e.g. security, lack of attention from the opposite sex, etc.


Being in control of your mind means being in control of what it says to you - it doesn't operate on its own doing what it wants, it operates in a pattern that it has learnt over the years from you. And the nice thing is, this habit - you can change it!


So the first step is to become aware of what you say to yourself when you talk about your dieting and weight. What do you say? Think about this now ...


Is it positive and encouraging? Or is it not?

Over the next week, listen to how you talk to yourself about your weight, your appearance and your diet. Now you are more aware of what you are saying to yourself about dieting and losing weight, you can start to reprogram yourself and get rid of those patterns. When you hear yourself say something that is discouraging or negative about yourself stop yourself immediately and change it into something positive and encouraging - something that makes you feel good. When you start doing this you will soon notice that your diet becomes so much easier and the weight disappears!

Many of the existing studies present the best-case scenario because they do not account for people who drop out of the program.


Each year millions of Americans and Europeans enroll in commercial and self-help weight loss programs. Health care providers and their obese patients know little about these programs because of the absence of systematic reviews. Unfortunately, many patients and their doctors know little about the effectiveness and safety of these programs, either. Few high-quality studies have assessed weight loss programs. He evidence to support the effectiveness of major commercial weight loss programs is limited. Patients considering the use of commercial weight loss programs should realize that these programs have not been carefully studied.


So, do weight loss programs really work? Some do in the short term but long term results are doubtful. The real effective way to lose weight is jsut what we all want to ignore: behavioral change done diligently over time. Changing behavior over time and engaging in a regular exercise routine is what will take excess weight off and keep it off. There is no magic potion, pill or program. Change behavior from what you eat to how you eat it, how much you eat and when is the key to long term, sucessful wight loss. It comes down to more calories used each day, called "burning calories," than taking in, called "eating."


If you are fighting obesity haphazardly, start to change your behavior TODAY. Use a smart yet systematic approach to behavior modification. It will take time but the long term benefits and permanent weight loss will be there!

The Weight Loss Industry, Are They Really Telling Us The Truth?


Everyone who has ever tried to lose weight and keep it off knows that it is a very hard thing to do. In fact, nothing can be closer to the truth than to say that weight loss is hard. So it's no wonder that when one weight loss company or another comes up with their new, miracle breakthrough weight loss pill that will simply melt the fat off while you sleep, regardless of what you eat, people can't wait to make their three easy payments of only $29.95 while feverishly awaiting the arrival of their weight loss "dream come true".


But, is it really a dream come true, or just merely a weight loss nightmare? As most people know, there have been countless numbers of products like this on the market that make outrageous claims of monumental weight loss in very little time with little or no effort on your part. Most people also know that not one of these products has ever lived up to their claims, and that a good deal of these products have also been known to yield dangerous side affects (fen/phen and redux for example). So why is it that weight loss companies continue to bombard us with new products every year that are no better than last year's products?


The weight loss industry is a $30 billion dollar per year industry that is solely based on attempting to convince the 65% of Americans who are overweight that weight loss not only doesn't have to be that hard, but in fact, can be down right easy! The problem is, with countless companies out there "bending" the truth with very sketchy so called research and the falsehood of endorsements by "doctors", sports stars and television and movie personalities, the general public is constantly hit with wave after wave of false hope. Perhaps if the weight loss companies were more honest about what really works long term and promoted products and methods that were in line with reality, more people would accept these realities and follow methods that actually work long term. There is a small problem with this however. That would be bad for the weight loss company's bottom lines! They would lose millions of dollars and that is not what those companies share holders want to hear.


It's all about business, not your health, not whether you lose weight and keep it off, not whether you're happy with the product in the end, just about business and that means nothing but bottom line. So, with the weight loss companies simply telling the public only what they want to hear, there is very little hope. Research has shown that 95% of people who do lose weight usually gain it back between six months and three years later. The FDA has declared that not one single weight loss company in the entire industry can show a record of long term success. It would be comparable to the home building industry if 95% of the new homes purchased fell apart and became unlivable within three years, but the public is completely oblivious to the enormous failure rate of the weight loss industry.


There are, sadly, only a few weight loss companies out there that base there methods on things that have been proven to work such as balanced diet and exercise but their voices are drowned out by all the "quick fix" fads and gimmicks that are out there.

Walking For Weight Loss


It is generally well accepted that exercise burns calories and can increase the overall health of body and mind. Most of us also recognize that walking is one of the simplest and most effective exercises for weight loss and health. What many people don't realize is that they might not be getting the most effective returns on their efforts. It actually requires just a little tweaking of a simple walking program to make it more effective as a weight loss program.


Many experts will recommend a minimum of 30 minutes of sustained physical activity every day for health. However, 30 minutes of walking a day, while it may initially cause some welcome and valuable weight loss for an overweight individual, the weight loss results will probably not be sustained as the body makes adjustments and learns to accept the new demands made on it. Rest assured, walking (or participating in other activities) for a sustained 30 minutes a day WILL result in better health, a greater level of energy and well-being, as well as producing SOME weight loss. However, anyone seriously overweight will probably not create the sustained, permanent weight loss they seek with only 30 minutes a day.


Because of the manner in which the body draws on fat stores vs. other stored energy sources, the first, and most valuable step, will be to increase the amount of time the activity is performed. Forty-five minutes is better than 30, and 60 is better than 45 minutes. Admittedly, walking an hour a day, six or seven times a week may be difficult for some to fit into their schedules. However, simply increasing the time to 45 or 60 minutes of activity two or three times a week will produce more weight loss than keeping all walks at 30 minutes.


Another technique is to increase the speed with which you walk on the days that you do not walk more than 30 minutes. This also has the benefit of conditioning the body in a slightly different manner than the slower paced, longer walks. Remember, no walk should introduce extreme difficulty in breathing. A rule of thumb is that if you cannot talk and walk, you are attempting to either go too fast or too far. Always build up slowly to new levels of exertion.


You may also want to consider adding resistance training, such as with free weights, or equipment such as a Bowflex or Total Gym, or similar exercise apparatus. This builds muscle tissue which will burn more calories even in a resting state. Additionally, walking exercises only certain muscles and muscle groups. A resistance training program can be used to train muscle groups generally not included in walking.


Although the extended 45 and 60 minute walks will be somewhat more effective if done at one time, two 30 minute walks in a day will be more beneficial for fitness and weight loss than only one. I would like to take a moment to address walking vs. running as a weight loss program. Certainly, if you train to the point where you can run certain distances in certain times, you will almost certainly experience a major weight loss if that is what your body needs. However, you can get just as fit as a runner by walking with a great deal less danger of injury. A beginning walker in particular is more likely to experience less discomfort during and after an exercise period than a beginning runner.


Once you have built muscles and stamina, you may wish to move into a running program. Also, in the beginning of any exercise program, whether for weight loss or physical fitness, extreme demands on the body and one's physical, mental, and motivational resources may result in the program being dropped. It is generally easier to slip into a permanent walking program from a sedentary lifestyle than a running program. One last argument for at least beginning with a walking program is that you can sneak into a walking program without any special equipment or preparation, and no one but you needs to know that the shopping trip to the mall was actually your secret walk for the day. There's an old saying that the journey of a thousand miles begins with one does a successful weight loss program.
