Is Swimming Effective For Weight Loss And Tone Muscles?

Well, most people think swimming is effective to tone muscles and lose fat and that is why the swimming pools everywhere are always packed in the evenings and weekends. Well, I must first declare that I am not anti-swimming. In fact, I swim regularly. However when I researched materials for my articles, I came across some negative aspects of swimming from the scientific community.

I was surprised too when I first read the report.

Swimming is considered as one of the best exercises to lose weight and also to build and tone muscles. Not surprisingly so because when you swim, all your major muscles are called into action. It also has an aerobic effect, so heart and lungs get a good workout too. However, a research published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine shows that in the absence of a controlled diet, swimming has little or no effect on weight loss. Professor Grant Gwinup conducted an experiment with the following results.

 

* Test subjects following a walking program lost 17 pounds of weight during the three-month study.

* Those following the cycling program lost 19 pounds of weight.

* However, subjects following the swimming program actually gained 5 pounds.

 

Many people feel hungry after swimming and may simply replace all the calories they've burned with a large meal after their swim. "Some research suggests that this is due to the cool temperatures in which swimmers train. By contrast, runners and cyclists usually experience an increase in body temperature during training, which may serve to suppress appetite - at least in the short term" said Professor Burke.

 

Professor Burke further said that competitive swimmers are less active outside their training sessions. They are so tired from the hours spent training that they sleep, sit or otherwise avoid any real physical activity outside their sessions. Now on building muscles, because most of the work your body does when swimming involves positive muscle actions, like pushing up a bench press, there is no negative action like lowering the weights during a bench press at all. We know that the negative move during weight training is important to build muscles and burn fat.

 

Doing any exercise is better than not exercising at all. So go ahead and swim so that you can have various forms of exercises to beat the boredom of doing the same things all the time. Just make sure that you don't eat more or become more sedentary after your swim.

Here's ten simple steps to help you get rid of that excess weigh with ease:

Tip 1 : Empty Calories

Many of the fizzy drinks that you buy such as sodas are full of empty calories that do you absolutely no good - even the diet ones have empty calories. Cut back on these and drink water instead (not fizzy artificial water) and you will benefit from the many good effects of drinking lots of water too.

 

Quality Fitness Equipment - I have yet to come across a psychiatrist, psychologist or physician who can answer this question, yet this is the most fundamental question if you wish to initiate lasting permanent behavior change.

 

The idea is that this reduces the calories in the product. Unfortunately, Aspartame is not very good for you.

 

Tip 2 : Avoid Aspartame

Many diet products have an artificial sweetener in them called Aspartame instead of sugar. Firstly, it's a neuro-toxin, that is, it kills brain cells, and secondly it makes you crave carbs. So by taking a product with Aspartame in it you are actually going to crave more food!

 

Tip 3 : Avoid Frying

Fried foods are full of fat which really don't help your weight loss program. If you grill, boil or bake food instead then it will be much healthier for you.

 

Tip 4 : Use Mustard

By putting something such as mustard or horse radish sauce on your food it will heat up your body. This heating up of your body is actually your metabolism speeding up, so therefore by putting these hot sauces on your food you are helping yourself to burn more calories.

 

Tip 5 : Avoid Junk Food

It's very easy to snack on junk food - it's convenient and tempting, which is the point! To avoid this temptation, carry around with you some healthy snacks such as nuts or fruit. You are often tempted by unhealthy food because it is easier to get to that healthy food. If you have something healthy to eat with you then it is easier and more convenient that the junk food!

 

Tip 6 : Never Shop on an Empty Stomach

If you go shopping on an empty stomach then it is much more tempting to buy junk food and food you don't really want. Always make sure you have eaten before you shop as you are more likely to buy healthy food.

 

Tip 7 : Keep Your Home Junk Food Free

If you keep your house free from junk food then you are less likely to give in to cravings and eat unhealthy food. Oftentimes you get these cravings but it is too much effort to get out and buy the junk food, so if you don't have it in the house you'll avoid it!

Tip 8 : Eat Breakfast

If you are busy it is very tempting to skip breakfast. Unfortunately it is probably the most important meal of the day and if you skip it then you may end up feeling lethargic. You will also be more tempted for a quick calorie boost from junk food if you miss this meal.

 

Tip 9 : Eat Before 8pm

If you eat too late at night then the food doesn't digest properly and sits in your stomach. By making sure you don't eat after 8pm you will allow your body the chance to properly digest your food and sleep much better too!

 

Tip 10 : Buy Smaller Plates

When you diet, you often cut down your food portion size. Unfortunately, if you continue to use the same sized plates then psychologically you feel bad because the plate isn't full - particularly if you are eating with someone who has a full plate. A smaller plate will help you to feel more comfortable with the smaller portion, and hence less calories. These ten tips will help you get rid of that excess weight quickly and easily and enjoy the process!

The world is fascinated with weight loss, some for health reasons and others for cosmetic. Use a mini cycle. These portable little exercise units offer the look of bicycle pedals set up on a metal bar, but without the high price or weight of a standard exercise bike. With a min cycle, you can pedal at your desk, on the couch or anywhere else that you can comfortably set and reach the pedals.

 

Tip # 3

Walk or take the stairs instead of an elevator. This is a terrific weight loss exercise without even noticing the extra effort. Something as simple as a few extra steps every day can go a long way where weight loss is concerned. The next time you go to the store, park in the middle of the parking lot and walk to the store. Avoid parking in the closest spot to the door, which is tempting, but opt to walk instead.

 

Tip # 4

You don't necessarily have to cut out all of your favorite foods, but you should eat them in moderation. There is no single food that will completely hinder your weight loss attempt but, if consumed excessively, it may. For instance, simply limit your intake to one candy bar or, if you are being really careful, a miniature candy. There is no reason to cut out your favorite food when a conservative amount of the things we love can still have a place in our lives, including during the times that we are focusing on weight loss.

Whatever your exercise routine, set aside a certain time each day to do it. I am so grateful for my relationship with my ex-husband, Rob. I realized this past week just how extraordinary he is and I wanted to dedicate this newsletter to him. I ran into an old friend recently who had gone through a divorce and revealed her story of on-going pain and agony. She mentioned that she doesn't have a good relationship with her ex-husband and he has minimal contact with their three sons. Her energy was very low and revealed such horrific sadness.
