Top 8 Most Talked About Weight Loss Myths

Here's some more myths we've been taught to believe over the years. Experts weigh in on the truth that lies behind each of these tall stories. All carbohydrates are bad for you and should be avoided. TRUTH: Carbohydrates have a moderate amount of calories (having half as many as fat). Simple carbohydrates (sugar) should be limited - complex carbohydrates: whole grain, starches etc. are higher in nutrients. Problems occur when servings are too large!

You need to exercise for at least 45 minutes at a time to get the full benefit.

You can eat more foods if they are low fat or fat free. TRUTH: Low fat or fat free does not mean calorie free. Usually, when the fat is taken out, sugar and other carbohydrates are added in to keep the taste. Dairy products are fattening and should be avoided. TRUTH: Dairy products contain a good quality protein to build muscles and help organs work properly, and calcium to strengthen bones. For weight control it's better to consume low-fat dairy products (skim or 1% milk and products, like cheese and yogurt).


Eating after 8 p.m. causes you to gain weight. TRUTH: It does not matter what time of day you eat. It is what and how much you eat as well as how much physical activity you do during the day that determines whether you gain, lose or maintain weight. What you eat is more important than how much you eat. TRUTH: the amount you have and how often you have it is more important. You should try to consume healthy food choices in the recommended portion sizes and save those foods and beverages that are high in fat, sugar and calories for special occasions.


TRUTH: Adults should engage in moderate-intensity physical activities for at least 30 minutes on 5 or more days of the week. Research has shown that the activity does not need to be done all at one time- 30 minutes can be split into 2 - 15 minute intervals and provide the same benefits. All vegetarians are healthy eaters. TRUTH: vegetarians on average eat fewer calories and less fat than non-vegetarians. However they can make food choices that contribute to weight gain by eating large amounts of high-fat, high-calorie foods as well as food with little nutritional value. The term vegetarian is not synonymous with health.


As long as you watch your food intake, you do not need to exercise. TRUTH: If you are trying to maintain or even lose weight, exercise can help you increase your lean tissue (muscle) while decreasing your fat stores. However, the benefit of regular physical activity goes well beyond maintaining a healthy weight. Consuming highly nutritious foods, paying close attention to portion sizes (reading labels), consuming sweets and treats in moderation and engaging in regular physical activity is the best plan to maintain a healthy lifestyle. And make sure you have all the facts before passing health info on to the next person!

Know Your Calories For Weight Loss


Ever wonder how many calories you need for weight loss? I am sure you always ask yourselves when you are on a weight loss program; will this extra little snack push me over my calorie limit and make me fat? How much should I eat to lose weight? How many calories should I burn?


In fact, most of the people are simply guessing their calories intake for weight loss. Some people don't bother; some people do not believe in counting calories and some just don't have the idea how. Here is just a simple guide for you to estimate your calorie intake for weight loss so that you have a goal, target and direction when you are on your weight loss program. This is for the one that really desire to lose weight, achieve abdominal weight loss for better health and that is willing to learn. If you have read my previous sections, I always emphasize on this equation. For weight loss, calories in must be lower than calories out, if you want to build muscle, its calories in more than calories out.


Now, all you need to is to estimate your daily calorie requirements:


Use this formula to calculate your estimated calorie needs:

Adult male: 66 + (6.3 x body weight in lbs.) + (12.9 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age in years)

Adult female: 655 + (4.3 x weight in lbs.) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age in years)


The final value from that calculation will bring you the total daily calories. From that, cut back 300 calories from it if you are exercising regularly and if you are not, cut back 500 calories. These are your calorie intake for weight loss. Assuming that your exercise will burn 350 kcal and your are exercising 4 times a week, or cutting back on 500 calories, you will roughly lose the recommended 1 pound of body fat a week. Its is better for you to exercise because cutting back 300 calories is easier and less depriving than 500 calories and exercising will keep you away from reaching your weight loss plateau by increasing your metabolism, increasing you daily calorie burn by activity, sculpting your body plus preventing the inevitable muscle loss due to old age!


How to set the percentages of nutrients for the meals?

Well, the general thumb rule is 60 % from carbohydrates, 30% from protein and 10 % from fat. But there are various combination that produce fantastic results as well like low carbohydrate diet, South Beach diet and CKD. Experiment is the key here; if you don't know the right percentages of nutrients to use, start of with 60 % carbs, 30 % protein and 10% fat first. Then, if you are not satisfied with the results, shift the percentages by lowering the carbs or increasing the protein. Find the percentages that will give you optimum energy and decrease in body fat. In conclusion, its important that you write down what you eat every day so that you know what works best for you.

Weight Loss Isn't Always Easy

So it's no secret anymore that America is one of the most overweight countries today. Our weight issues have been a hot subject in the media and news for several years now, and new trendy diets and weight loss programs have been spawning out of control - and making some companies megabucks in the process.If you are like many millions of other Americans and are overweight, you're probably very interested in finding the best weight loss system possible. Are these new trendy diets the way to go? What about medication, or even surgery?


With that final calorie value after cutting out 300 or 500 calories, you need to spread them out into 5 meal or 6 meals. This is because by eating small meals, your blood sugar level is regulated. Carbohydrates and protein have 4 calories, fat have 9 calories and alcohol have 7 calories. The only thing you have to watch out is that calories from alcohol have no benefit at all and will most likely turn to body fat. With these values, plan your meals with the combination of nutrients that do not pass your calorie intake for weight loss.


The rise in the use of both medication and surgery is to me a little scary. While they are both the best weight loss methods with respect to losing weight fast, they are also the most risky, and have vastly more side effects and dangers compared to dieting and exercise programs. Surgery, whether it's liposuction or a gastric bypass, is always inherently risky. While liposuction is definitely the safer of the two common forms of weight loss surgery, it remains very expensive, and can leave you with a pretty vicious scar. Gastric bypasses are more drastic, and can lead to serious tissue damage, medical conditions and nutrient deficiencies. So surgical procedures get the weight off fast, but because of their danger and high cost, they really should be reserved for people that suffer from obesity that is causing serious and immediate adverse health effects.


Medication is less drastic than surgery, but not by a lot, and in itself has plenty of dangers associated with it. Regardless of what you hear advertised, any drug or "herb" that suppresses your appetite will have some potentially harmful side effects, and shouldn't be taken without talking to your doctor first. As tempting as they may be, medications aren't the best weight loss method for most people, and should be reserved for more serious forms of obesity. Unfortunately, its good old diet and exercise that is the best weight loss method in the end. The good news is our understanding of both diet and exercise is improving. We now know that starving yourself is not the answer.


Actually, studies today are showing that the best weight loss diets are the ones that encourage you to eat a lot and often, but stick to healthier foods. Foods high in fiber, vegetables, lean protein, and low fat, eaten throughout the day will help you maintain a high metabolism. If you're hungry, eat! Starving will slow down your metabolism considerably, so keep eating but just eat healthy things. Yes, losing weight may not be fun, but for some people, it could be life-saving, or at least health-saving.

The Practical Weight Loss Diet To Maintain A Lean Body

Certainly you must be wondering, what is the best weight loss diet. I mean I sure you realized by now you can get a six pack abs by eating fast food and snacks right? Those foods will bring your metabolism down like nobody's business! Don't panic yet, I am not saying that you cant have those food forever, once you have achieved your goal, you can have your favorite fast food or snacks occasionally and WHEN you have those food make sure you cherish it and chew it slowly so that you can really taste the flavor.

Here is the deal; there must be something that triggers you to make that decision to get on a weight loss diet right? You can't just wake up one morning and say; " Maybe I will lose some weight today." It just doesn't make sense. There must be some motivation, either is to bring your high cholesterol down, increase your fitness level and be healthier because you want to live long enough to see you grandchildren, or lose weight to be able to play sports with your children, to get that girl next door that you admire so much, to get into that beautiful sexy dress that your husband bought you or to gain your confidence and go out and have fun without being paranoid about your weight. There must be something that is so powerful and influential that drives you to make that decision about losing weight, this weight loss diet will help you achieve that!


My point is, when I ask you to eat with the intention of fueling your body with healthy food during the first 6 days of the week, Monday to Saturday and then only Sunday having your favorite food with your loved ones, don't be disgusted or rebel! This is a practical weight loss diet, not a quick fix. It's for long term. Think back on the motivation that drives you to take action in losing weight in the first place. You might say, " Come on, don't give me that crap and just give me the solutions!" Well, this is the main solution! You have got to have the desire to lose weight and do what it takes for you to achieve that goal. Now that your mindset is ready, then I can tell you what food you should eat and what to avoid for maximum fat burning in this weight loss diet, because without the strong mind set, you will give up easily. Trust me, have seen my clients getting gung ho at the beginning and fail because they don't have that strong mind set and give up easily. We trainers can only supply you the tools and the path, you have got to use it and walk it, with a mind set of " Its for myself and no one else! "

The big picture of the weight loss diet
The whole week will break down like this; Monday to Saturday, you will eat 4 -5 meals, healthy meals. They are the good fuel. Monday to Saturday Weight Loss Diet
The goal is to eat 4-5 small meals; the fifth is a small snack just in case you need it if your hunger is giving you difficulty to sleep. 4 to 5 meals a day! Omigosh! Don't panic yet, these are small meals and you need them to keep your turbo engine running, keep that metabolism on fire. You need fuel to keep that fire burning right? This method keeps your blood sugar elevated and also keeps the insulin under control. You will feel energetic all day! Some people will advice you to calculate calories, that's all good but it is difficult if you on a go and you are at a restaurant that serves a mix of food, that is very hard to calculate because we don't know what exactly what is inside the mixture of food. On this weight loss diet, I am going to use a more practical approach here. For carbohydrates, use your fist for estimation. For example, how much of brown rice should I eat?


Use your fist and that's the amount. For protein, use your palm, like a palm of steak or chicken breast. Eat as much vegetable as you want but be careful on how the veggie is been cooked, drain out the gravy and oil from the vegetables. Use a teaspoon to measure the amount of oil to use and for cheese, the size would be the size of a thumb. Others use sparingly. This is the size of meal that you should be eating on each meal, by the end of the meal; you would not feel hungry, full but not super full. Drink 1 or 2 glasses of plain water to fill your stomach up and then wait. You will feel full later. For more effective results, drink a hot cup of coffee or tea after you meal. It you satisfy you.

The cheat day is here and you can eat all the cheat foods that you desire and still lose weight. On the Sunday, you can have your favorite meals with your family and friends. Make sure you cherish and really enjoy the food that you eat on this day. Take this day very seriously and important. One, because it is with the people you love and with the food you all enjoy. Secondly, you have successfully completed one week of your 3 months plan. You should celebrate. Get your mind off dieting and when Monday comes you will raring to go.
