It’s Almost Spring –Get Back on Track with your Weight Loss Diet

It’s right about that time –the shoulder season of dieting. A time when we’re no longer obsessed by our New Years resolutions and the looming bathing suit season is still too far off. We’re stuck between a rock and hard place because it’s hard to find the motivation to get on to a weight loss diet when there’s nothing particularly motivating us to get moving.

The key to experiencing a new-found motivation in your dieting lifestyle is action.

If you’re looking for some springtime dieting inspiration to get back on track with your healthy eating regime or exercise plan, think about the meaning of the spring season. Spring is the time of year when little flowers peek through the melting snow and new birth begins. Let these little miracles quietly happening around you to compel you to make a positive diet change in your life.

 

Find an activity or diet program that you’re interested in and commit to it. For example, is there a cause or charity preparing for a walk-a-thon, 5-mile run or half-marathon in your city?

Is there an aerobic class or walking group you can join?

 

Once you’ve selected the right activity, it’s important to commit and stick to it because without a commitment you’re not likely to reach your greatest potential. Something that may help you commit is the group of people you meet or the friends which accompany you to the fitness class, walking group or tennis club. Finding a community of people that will be there every week will help motivate you to participate knowing you have a group of people waiting for you.

 

Finally, once you’ve found an activity and group of people to keep you enthused, try telling your friends or loved ones about your new-found motivation. Not only will you inspire others to recommit to their health with your example, but the act of telling people is an indirect way to keep you accountable.

We all have those people who we connect with on a higher level. As you know, Wayne Dyer is my spiritual mentor who helps me stay in that higher level of consciousness. His messages resonate with me and I am so grateful that he is in my life. With this said, I had a clear message that I was supposed to watch his DVD on the Power of Intention. I’ve watched it from time to time since I received it about a year and half ago. This Divine message was clear: Watch it daily! So for the past two weeks I have watched it during my morning exercise routine. You know how we have to listen to something over and over, and over some more before we begin to fully appreciate the message.

I thought I was already a very calm person, but now I am even more at peace. I’m learning to manifest love for myself and connect to God in an even greater way that I could ever imagine. What does it mean to vibrate at a higher level of consciousness?

Energy is everywhere. There is no where it is not. Everything has energy. It’s either lower vibration or higher vibration, and we get to make a conscious choice which one we will choose. When we make our choice, then we’ve decided what we intend to attract. It is our decision, no one else’s. No one can make you choose either one. It’s your responsibility.

 

Right?

Likewise when someone squeezes us by saying something negative and out of us comes a negative emotion such as hatred, then that’s what is inside of us. It isn’t the person who is doing the squeezing that is producing the negative emotion; it is what is already inside of us.

 

What does lower vibration look like?

All negative energy is lower vibration: hatred, fear, resistance, worry, being offended, frustration, doubt…things that make you feel anxious. Every thought that expresses: “I can’t do it. I don’t deserve. I’m not enough” are all lower energies.

 

What does higher vibration look like?

All positive energy is high vibration: love, gratitude, fun, deep breathing, exercise, music that feeds our soul, shaking your hiney as you dance, nature…things that make you feel great. Every thought that expresses: “I can do it. I do deserve. I am enough” are all high energies. I can remember having a conversation with my daughter having a challenge with another person. She said, “He makes me so mad.” We then had a lengthy discussion about this statement.

 

How can anyone make you mad?

It’s not possible. The decision was made to connect to lower vibration. You have to own the responsibility of your choice. It’s beautiful to think in these terms. Each moment we make a decision: Am I going to choose to be in harmony with God, which is higher vibration…or not. You take ownership each and every moment. You have the power to choose.

Which energy do you think brings you closer to your weight loss goals?

 

Right now, do something that brings you harmony. This will take 1 minute or less. Let’s have some fun. Turn on some music and get up and boogey. That’s right, bring up that vibration of energy. Yes, you’re feeling it now. Even if you’re at work, let loose. You will be the envy of everyone.

 

Remember, it doesn’t matter what people think. What only matters is this. Am I feeling great?

If the answer is yes, then you have made your choice of the two energy levels. Let others make their choice. If they choose to be offended by what you do, you don’t have to do anything with their decision. Bless them and let it go. The Universe will take care of them. It’s that simple. All you are responsible for is your own power, your choices. It’s all about you. It’s that simple. Just ask yourself this question: If I intend to lose weight, what do I need to do each day to bring me in vibrational harmony with that decision?

Weight Loss Motivation: Mastering the Motivation to Stay Fit

Have you ever just felt like you were doing everything you were supposed to in order to lose weight and STILL weren't dropping the pounds?

During her journey to lose 40lbs in 16 weeks, my good friend Kim faced some pretty serious challenges with regards to her level of motivation. Another friend of mine, Antonio Goodwin, who lost 4 inches from his waistline in 9 weeks with my program, faced the same frustration. The problem was that at several times during their weight loss, they both felt as if they were not losing much weight and were not seeing results. Now, a look at either of their before and after photos on my web sites shows that each of them made quite a substantial improvement in their bodies.

 

So what would make someone who's losing weight each week feel as if they were not?

I'll tell you exactly what. Its referred to as the emotional roller coaster.

 

This is how it usually goes:

You start a new diet or weight loss program. You're all excited to be doing something great for your health and the way you look, and you're sticking to the program, step by step. Consistent action pays off and after a short while you start getting compliments about the pounds you're losing week by week. Then all of a sudden, it all seems to stop. You can no longer see the physical changes in your body, and maybe you even have a moment of weakness and cheat a bit on your diet plan. So now you're frustrated and mildly depressed. You feel as if true weight loss may NEVER happen for you, no matter what you do.

 

TIME OUT.

The trick here is to not get stuck in your own frustration. Now this is a tough one, because everyone and I do mean EVERYONE goes through this stage. Whenever I need to trim down for a photo shoot, I go through it as well. One of the things that you must understand about the body is that for as long as you are doing the right things on a consistent basis it WILL respond with results.

 

The Jedi Mind Trick is that oftentimes the progress is subtle, or may be primarily taking place in an area that you cannot see as well.

For instance, my friend Kim loses weight in her back the fastest. Her frustration came because she did not see the fat loss on her stomach the way she would have liked to. Little did she know that from behind she looked like a completely different person.

 

Listen, the emotional roller coaster is an inevitable aspect of any worthy undertaking that we take on in life.

Remember getting through college?

Or maybe waiting for puberty to set in?

How about paying off your debts?

The mental battle while attempting to diet and/or achieve weight loss is no different.

 

So make a conscious decision to stick to your guns. Let it play out. Victory lies in having the strength to make it through the rough spots without cracking under the pressure and losing all that you've worked for. If you can just master getting past the point of frustration, before you know it you'll be seeing results again and getting more compliments.

As my weight loss web sites gain more popularity, I find myself answering more and more emails with questions about various weight loss programs and other diet tips. I have noticed that many of these questions about weight loss are very similar to one another. Therefore, I have put together a list of the ten most frequently asked questions about diets and weight loss

 

1. What is the best diet plan or weight loss program?

My answer to this is simple…any diet that provides all the nutrition that you need for health, and in addition, provides fewer calories than your body burns.  While this may not be the answer you wanted to hear, the fact is there is no one weight loss program that is best for everyone, you must research the various weight loss plans and find the one that is best for you. Just make sure your diet is a healthy diet.

 

2. How much should I weigh?

Your doctor can answer that question most accurately. More important than how much you weigh is your body mass index (bmi), which measures your height against your weight. There are plenty of free bmi calculators all over the internet.

 

3. How can I keep off the weight that I lose?

The best way to lose weight is gradually. Most weight loss experts would agree that 1-2 pounds per week is the best rate to lose weight. If you lose weight gradually and re-educate both yourself and your body about food, you'll have a good start. The secret to keeping weight off is to balance your energy needs with your food intake. Eat enough calories to supply your body's energy needs, but not so many that your body stores the excess as fat.

 

Ghrelin is the hormone that is secreted when your body needs nourishment; it's the hormone that makes you say "Feed me! I want more!" While leptin suppresses appetite, ghrelin stimulates it. Lack of sleep decreases the body's production of leptin by 18% and increases the body's production of ghrelin by 15%. In essence, sleep deprivation puts the body in starvation mode, stimulating the cells to ask for more food. The result is you eat more. Does feeling hungry at 3 am sound familiar?

 

4. What is the connection between obesity and diabetes?

Obesity increases the risks of a number of chronic health conditions, and diabetes is one of them. People who are more than ten percent overweight increase their risk of developing type 2 diabetes substantially.

 

5. How do I decrease my intake of sugar?

Obviously, you can decrease your intake of sugar by cutting out sweets and refined snacks, but you should also watch out for 'hidden' sugars. Check ingredients. High fructose corn syrup and sucrose are both simple sugars that add lots of calories and little nutrition.

 

6. How often should I weigh myself?

Most diet experts recommend that you weigh yourself no more than once a week. Some go so far as to tell you to throw out the scale entirely! Personally, I think that people who are trying to lose weight should focus less on what they weigh. Yes, I know that sounds strange, but people who are trying to lose weight should focus on how they look and feel more than how much they weight. A more accurate measure of your weight loss is your clothing size. If your clothing is feeling looser, you're doing great.

 

7. Do I really have to exercise?

YES! The truth is it will be a lot harder to lose weight if you do not exercise. A half hour of moderate exercise daily is the minimum activity level for healthy weight loss. You can get it walking, running, cleaning your house - anything active burns calories.

 

8. What's a calorie?

A calorie is a measure of energy. Foods are rated with calories based on the amount of energy they provide to the body when consumed.

 

9. Can I lose weight without changing my diet?

The best weight loss results happen when you burn more calories than you consume. If you only need to lose a small amount of weight and your diet is generally healthy, you can lose weight by increasing your activity level to burn more calories. If your diet is poor, or if you're more than a few pounds overweight, you really need to learn a new, more healthy way of eating, or you'll put the weight back on when you go back to 'normal' eating.

 

10. What are the best all around diet foods?

How to Make Sleep Your Weight Loss Buddy

My friend, Gail, has been a restless sleeper since childhood. "It's rare that I get a goodnight's sleep," she confided in me several years ago. Her weight has been a problem as well, spiraling upwards of 60 lbs within the past 20 years. Like most of us, her exercise and diet plans begin with enthusiasm but fizzle out within the first month. "Just too tired to keep them going" is her excuse. It wasn't until her doctor referred her to the Sleep Specialist that things began to change. Within 6 months, she lost 25 lbs. She began exercising and now she feels much more optimistic about her future. "I'll get down to where I want to be," she said. "But the great thing is I can sleep like a baby at night." Gail's situation points to a distinct connection between sleep and weight. Recently, sleep deprivation has been identified as one of the major problems of our internet culture. Not coincidentally, obesity (despite the many diets that are around) is at its highest level. The connection between sleep deprivation and weight gain is no longer in the realm of conjecture. Several studies show a direct correlation between sleep and weight.

 

Research shows that sleep directly affects hunger. At the New York Obesity Research Center of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, scientists have identified a direct correlation between the amount of sleep you get and your body's secretion of hormones related to satiation and hunger. Leptin is the hormone that is released when your body feels satiated and full. It's the hormone that makes you push your plate away from you at the dinner table.

 

How then can you enlist sleep to be one of your weight loss allies?

First of all, make sure that you are on a healthy eating plan. Having the best sleep every night and the worst diet in the world at the same time will not make you lose weight. Make sure that your daily food intake includes 25-30% protein, 45-55% complex carbohydrates, 15-20% essential fatty acids. Secondly, make sure you are on an effective exercise program 4-5 times a week. The best workout includes both weight training and aerobics. Exercise PLUS protein is the most effective way to sculpt your body. Now—we can talk sleep. Just having enough sleep will not make you lose weight, but it will surely help you stick to your weight loss plans. Here are some suggestions for enhancing your sleep experience.

 

1. Limit your consumption of alcohol and caffeine especially in the evening. Alcohol will give you unnecessary calories; so eliminating it entirely while you are trying to lose weight might not be a bad idea. Caffeine (especially from green tea) taken during the day can enhance your metabolism and burn fat. But caffeine in the evening can bring about a restless night.

 

2. Develop a personal sense of sleep hygiene. This means cultivating a regular wake and sleep schedule so that you can program your body to a routine. Find a sleep ritual that works best for you. For me, it's reading in bed. For Gail, it's listening to a sleep enhancing CD. Find a ritual that helps your body understand that you are ready for sleep.

 

3. Don't go to bed hungry. While this does not mean that you should have a heavy snack at bedtime, it does suggest that a light snack,rich in sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan, can help. Warm low-fat milk is best. You can add a few( no more than 2-3) lean slices of lean turkey( also rich in tryptophan) if you wish.

 

4. Exercise at least 3 hours before bedtime. Physical activity contributes to the body's need for sleep. But exercising too close to bedtime can actually prevent sleep because exercise raises the body's metabolism and alertness level.

 

5. Take a warm bath an hour before bedtime. Your body temperature will slowly drop after you get out of the tub making you feel tired.

 

6. Create a Bed Sanctuary. If you want to sleep well, make your bedroom sleep- conducive. Get the best mattress you can afford, the most comfortable pillows, the best blackout shades. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Eliminate noise by using earplugs.

 

7. Eliminate distractions like a humming TV, computer or phone.

 

8. Keep your days active. Resist the temptation of nap so that your body will be ready for a restful sleep at night.
