Here's the problem: so many of us have busy lives nowadays, what with work, family, and social life - and there's no good way to make our lives less busy than they are; nor do we want to, most of the time! However, the same features that make for an enjoyable, active lifestyle can also lead to substantial weight gain as the years go on. Not having enough time to exercise, eating at restaurants - our on the go modern lifestyle is usually not at all conducive to weight loss.
So you start looking at weight loss plans - but that, too, presents a challenge. You see, most weight loss plans are complicated, requiring several hours of your already scarce spare time each week - or, in some cases, even each day! Think about it - first you have to do your research, choosing a weight loss program, reading a book, joining a group program, and so on.
Then you have to shop for food, prepare special meals, exercise, count fat grams or protein and carbohydrate grams or calories - it all adds up, and one of the leading reasons why weight loss plans fail is that people don't have the time to follow them properly, to the letter. And following a weight loss plan imperfectly, or following it sporadically, can be harmful; this can lead to yo-yo dieting, guilt, and binging. Wouldn't it be great if there was a very simple weight loss plan that worked?
Fortunately, there are a few. Now, a plan such as this is probably not the answer if you have a lot of weight to lose, or if your weight is becoming a medical issue. However, if you just want to lose a couple of pounds and improve your overall health at the same time, try this: every time you have a meal or a snack, eat a carrot first. This means a large, peeled carrot - not one of those 'baby carrots' that come pre-peeled. Of course, you can use the baby carrots for convenience, but in that case you should eat at least four or five before each meal or snack.
Why does this work? It's simple. For one thing, the carrot fills you up. It's a very high fiber, filling, low calorie food. If you eat a carrot before eating anything else, you won't have as much room in your stomach for other things. Of course, to achieve this purpose, it doesn't actually have to be a carrot - you could eat some salad, or a few radishes, or even an apple. But carrots are convenient and portable, and you can buy them once a week in bulk, so they seem a good choice.
You can follow the same principle when you're eating out at a restaurant - because you may not want to pull a carrot out of your bag and start munching away! Instead, you can order a salad with the dressing on the side as an appetizer. Eat the salad and leave the dressing, or if you must, dip your fork into the dressing now and then for a little flavor. Then, when you've eaten your salad, order anything else that you want - but pay attention to how full you feel, and don't stuff yourself past fullness. That's all you need to do. Over time, you will eat less and you will lose weight.
It's particularly important to remember the carrot before you have a snack. Many of the calories that busy people consume each day are not consumed at meals, but as snacks. For this reason, it is imperative that you eat the carrot before having anything else, like a muffin or cookie, to stop those snack calories from adding up. And be honest with yourself - if you eat your carrot and you're not hungry for the cookie anymore, don't eat the cookie. But if you're still hungry and you still want it, have it.

Wonderful news on my weigh in on Friday March 10; my weight is down by another 2 pounds (900 grams) in just a week. That is double my target figure and it seems to get easier each week. My weight is now 188 pounds (93 kilograms). That means that the seventeen-week program that was going to shed 17 pounds (8.5 kilos)will now end in around 10 weeks.
This week the biggest plus has been that my stomach is now becoming used to smaller portions and it is easier than ever to accept smaller servings. This may seem a long way off for some that are following the program; just trust me for now, this will happen for you too in the very near future.
Serving sizes are the cause of most instances of overweight and were I asked for a single specific goal for all overweight people it would be to slowly reduce the size of servings. Get your daily calorie intake down to 3000 or less. - An adult body requires 2000 calories each day to function properly, three thousand a day is still considered high by more than half the population of the world. The best part of this program is reclaiming my aerobic physical fitness. In the past five weeks I have witnessed the return of my leg muscles, my stamina levels have increased and finally my lungs are responding to the extra (deep-breathing) exercise they receive.
