I am somebody who has had an ongoing battle with my weight for most of my life. I have to be very careful what I eat as I seem to gain weight very easily. I have tried many diets, however I wanted to find a way of losing weight without having to starve myself or drink horrible milkshakes etc.I have known and worked with many people and have been amazed at how much they seem to be able to eat without getting fat. I am sure I eat half as much as these people but am still twice their size, it is not fair!
One day I decided I needed to find my own way of losing weight. It was time to have a reality check and to be honest with myself. I knew that in reality I do very little exercise, I like all of the wrong types of food. I am a bit of a fast food junkie, this is only because of my busy lifestyle . One of my biggest problems though is that I like snack food, such as peanuts, chocolate and crisps.
They would also no doubt, advise me to join a gym and to go jogging every morning. Get real! Those gyms are full of thin people, if I go jogging I might get mugged, and I am sorry but life would not be worth living without my weekly pizza!
I decided that what I would do is to basically eat a healthy type breakfast which would be cerial or toast. I would have a fairly light lunch, such as a sandwich, however for my evening meal I could eat whatever I wanted. The main thing and most difficult to implement would be the fact that I would be no longer eating between meals. The snacks had to go!. I am not trying to say that this was easy to do, however I had a need and was determined to lose weight.
For exercise I decided to leave the car at home, wherever possible, and walk to more places. I also started taking my children to the park more often. At the park we would play games such as football, cricket and baseball. It is amazing how much weight you can lose by having fun.

Is Weight Loss Surgery worth it?
Weight loss surgery is a growing new trend - called gastrointestinal surgery, this procedure has been around since the late 1950's but has grown in popularity in recent years. Essentially, the stomach is drastically reduced in size using various techniques.
After this reduction, the person is unable to eat that much at a time - this can result in dramatic weight loss, usually averaging about twenty percent in the next two years. But the big question is, is it worth it? There are significant health costs associated with both being obese and with having the surgery.
On the one hand, being obese can cause you to have serious heart problems along with health problems in general. On the other, there is a significant risk of death associated with even having the weight loss surgery - the older you get, the higher it is. This doesn't even account for the risk of non-fatal side effects, such as infection, vomiting, ulcers, and nutrient deficiency. Many of these don't even occur until ten years or so after the surgery. Ultimately, the health risks probably aren't worth it - no matter how much you weigh, there are other, less invasive ways to get rid of the weight.
People try to rationalize the surgery as getting rid of the health problems of obesity, but these are gradual and often can be avoided with regular exercise, even if you remain obese despite the workout. You need to take a good, hard look at the reasons why you are getting this surgery. For most people, despite what they say about the health risks of obesity, the real reason is vanity: they just can't take being overweight anymore. This just isn't a good reason to risk your life on a surgery like this - you can get the same benefits through diet and hard work, or you can try to work through the self esteem problems with a therapist or friends. Once the pancreas can no longer keep up with producing high levels ofinsulin, blood glucose levels begin to rise, resulting in type 2 diabetes, thusIR is a pre-diabetes condition. In fact scientists now believe that theatherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) associated with diabetes likelydevelops during this IR period.
Type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes. The risk of type 2 diabetes increases with the degree and duration of obesity. Type 2 diabetes is associated with centralobesity; a person with central obesity has excess fat around his/her waist, sothat the body is shaped like an apple.
High blood pressure (hypertension). Hypertension is common among obeseadults. A Norwegian study showed that weight gain tended to increase bloodpressure in women more significantly than in men. The risk of developing highblood pressure is also higher in obese people who are apple shaped (centralobesity) than in people who are pear shaped (fat distribution mainly in hips andthighs).

A gift from the native San people who live in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa, this tiny plant the natives' call "Xhoba" has already began impacting the world of weight loss with its extraordinary hunger stopping traits. What the Aboriginal San Bushmen have known for a long time and the rest of us are merely beginning to realize is that Hoodia has appetite suppressant qualities distinguished by plant scientists and named P57. Hoodia Pseudolithos and Trichocaulon are members of the Trichocaulon sub-section from the Kalahari Desert region of S. Africa that touches Angola, Botswana and Namibia. Hoodia Gordonii is the name of the cactus you will want to get but don't plan on taking a outing to the South Africa and getting some Hoodia cacti for yourself; the Hoodia desert cactus are under strict control by the S. African government. It is considered an endangered plant and only Hoodia cactus farmers with certification may produce and sell the Hoodia.
Can Hoodia affect the world's obesity problem and help the planet be a slimmer place? Business organizations including, Council for Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), Phytopharm, Pfizer and most recently Slim Fast all believe so. All of these companies have banked on Hoodia's success and together have invested millions of dollars, wanting to corner the marketplace on weight loss. Looking at Hoodia's journey from Xhoba, plant of The San Bushmen to being today's miracle plant for weight loss we need to first look at where Hoodia's been over the past thirty plus years.
The greatest amount of time, CSIR analyzed Hoodia to isolate the molecule p57, once they eventually obtained it; they then sold the rights of p57 to Phytopharm. In 1998 The Phytopharm Company leased marketing rights to Pfizer, who invested thirty-two million only to subsequently drop out of the scene because p57 was too expensive to synthesize as a pill. Pfizer's situation has now been taken over by The Unilever Corporation, the parent company of Slim Fast. Slim Fast at present plans on delivering a Hoodia weight loss supplement to nutritional stores in a couple years.
Food passes through the outlet from the upper stomach pouch to the lower part more slowly, resulting in you feeling full longer. This narrowing can be adjusted as needed in a simple outpatient procedure. This is a key point to understand. The fact that it can be adjusted means you will regain less weight, if any for the rest of your life. Whenever you start to regain weight, your doctor can simply decrease the size of your makeshift pouch causing you to eat less food.
Almost a year ago, on November of 2004, the Hoodia plant contracted big media coverage when CBS's Sixty Minutes did a show on Hoodia's appetite suppressant qualities. With the 60 minute TV exposure, Hoodia was now wanted plant by dieters all-round the globe. People having a hard time staying on their diets desired Hoodia now, not in a couple of years, the secret was out and Hoodia was becoming an indispensable plant. I'm sure after that 60 minutes program was aired, numbers of dieters looked into moving to the Kalahari Desert and making themselves a tiny Hoodia garden of their very own. Luckily, as it is today there isn't a reason to go to that extent, where there is a consumer need; there are many businesses happy to fill that request. There were a few businesses that were informed of Hoodia before the news coverage broke and were in the right place at the right time. It didn't take long though for numerous other organizations to create associations with South African Hoodia Gordonii growers and get Hoodia supplements into stores.
Nowadays there are numerous brands marketing both Hoodia powder form and extracts; how long will the Hoodia plant supply last is the question on dieter's minds right now. The Hoodia Gordonii succulent is a very hard plant to grow; the plants need very much care and management with irrigating, temperature and sunshine. Where it stands today there are only a couple of Hoodia harvesting centers in the South Africa and the Hoodia plant takes two to three years before it's ready to be exported. Taking this into account, the multi-million dollar question is, for how many months can the Hoodia succulent plant export continue? Because of this situation buyers should be aware if the Hoodia they are getting has been independently tested and certified to be pure Hoodia Gordonii from South Africa. There are companies out there taking advantage of the great demand and interest in Hoodia and supplying a low quality product.
I'll talk about the five most common. Now, again, keep in mind I am not a doctor. I will only give you the laymen's version, as I understand them. There a re a trillion websites out there that will give a more "medically sound" version of these surgeries. The five I will talk about are as follows:
1. The Roux-en Y gastric bypass
This is the procedure that I had, so I know quite a bit more about it so I will talk a little more in length about this procedure. The Roux-en Y gastric bypass is a restrictive operation where a small pouch is made at the upper portion of the stomach, which can hold only 1-2 tablespoons in volume.
This procedure helps you lose weight three ways:
A) You will eat less. You just won't be able to eat a lot. If you eat too much, it will come back up. The food has no choice. If you can't eat a lot, you will lose weight. Period.
B) Your appetite will actually begin to change. After the procedure, most patients find that their body will not easily tolerate foods that are high in refined sugars and fats. This is called "Dumping Syndrome." Dumping Syndrome is a common side effect after gastric bypass and occurs when the contents of the stomach empties rapidly into the small intestine, especially if you eat concentrated sweets or carbohydrates. The feeling you will experience may be a combination of profuse sweating, nausea, dizziness and weakness. "Dumping" is actually a desired side effect of the surgery to discourage you from eating sweets.
C) You actually absorb fewer calories. Keep in mind that your body's plumbing is re-worked. After a Roux-en Y, food bypasses part of your small intestine and digestion occurs in the lower part of the small intestine. These two factors reduce the amount of calories your body absorbs from the food you eat.
2. The biliopancreatic diversion.
The procedure is a combination restrictive-malabsorptive procedure as well, except that the main mechanism of weight loss and maintenance is malabsoprtion, with restriction playing a much lesser role.
3. The vertical banded gastroplasty
The vertical banded gastroplasty creates a small stomach within the regular stomach. The operation causes weight loss by forcing you to eat small meals. Relief from hunger is accomplished with tiny amounts of food - and overeating results in vomiting. A vertically oriented staple line is placed high on the right side of the stomach. The outlet is carefully measured and its size precisely controlled. A mesh band is placed around the outlet of the pouch to keep the pouch outlet from stretching. Aside from the creation of the small pouch there is no significant change in the gastrointestinal tract.
4. The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LapBand)
The LAP-BAND is designed to induce weight loss by restricting food consumption, and is a variation of the Vertical Banded Gastroplasty. I am a big fan of this procedure. I think one day this will be standard in surgical weight loss procedures. The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band, or the LapBand, is a restrictive operation where a silicone band is wrapped around the upper part of the stomach to create a small stomach pouch. This means that you will feel full with only a small amount of food and your intake is restricted.
5. The Mini-Gastric Bypass (MGB)
Dr. Robert Rutledge--director of The Centers for Excellence in Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery, and a frequent guest on Lighten Up America is a talented surgeon who pioneered mini-gastric bypass surgery. He describes MGB as a minimally invasive procedure that partitions the stomach into a long, narrow tube and a separate larger piece.
The smaller stomach is attached about 6 feet down in the small intestine. The larger stomach is sealed and left unattached. The smaller stomach decreases the amount the patient can eat and the bypass of a portion of the small intestine decreases the absorption of fat and calories. In the more than 2,500 patients who have already undergone the procedure, this combination of smaller volume and decreased absorption has resulted in an average weight loss of 140 pounds in one year in a 300-pound patient.
