Is there such thing as the "magic" weight loss pill?

Is there such thing as the "magic" weight loss pill?

Modern medicine has given us a number of miracles in a bottle. We have pills for arthritis, pills for heartburn, pills for heart trouble. We have pills that will help us wake up in the morning, pills that will help us digest our afternoon meal, and pills that will enable us to sleep at night. We live in a pill-popping society.

There are a number of advantages to using diet pills when trying to fight fat.

Because of the number of medications available, we often turn to pills to cure what ails us--no matter what our trouble might be. Whether it's physical or emotional, we may believe that medication will take care of the problem. As a result, it's not surprising that a number of us also turn to diet pills in an effort to control our weight.

Diet pills are also convenient. We can keep them in our medicine cabinet or kitchen cupboard. We can take a pill in the morning and not have to worry about our weight for the rest of the day. We don't have to do a great deal of research, as is required when we are trying to determine which diet to try. In addition, taking a diet pill is hardly as strenuous as running five miles or swimming ten laps.

Moreover, diet pills can help us to shift some of the responsibility for losing weight to another entity. No longer is it simply up to us to control our weight. We look to the pill to resolve our weight problem, once and for all. This can help to lower our anxiety, reducing our stress level.

But there are also serious disadvantages to using diet pills. For instance, there is the possibility that we will become addicted to the medication. This can take a toll on not only our physical health, but our emotional health as well. We may become too dependent on the pills, expecting them to solve our weight problems. Diet pills also teach us nothing about good nutrition. You do not have to learn about proper diet if you are depending on a pill to take your excess weight away. As a result, an individual may never discover the importance of healthy eating, and his or her overall health could suffer as a result.

In addition, there is no such thing as a quick fix when it comes to weight loss. While you might lose weight for a time after taking diet pills, you could quickly regain the weight, once you go off the pills. As a result, diet pills fail to provide a life-long approach to healthy weight maintenance. Given the pros and cons of diet pills, you might be wondering whether they would be right for you. Check with your family physician. He or she is in the best position to assess your overall health and determine whether diet pills would be appropriate in your particular case. Secondly, consider consulting with a nutritionist. He or she can help advise you about whether to take diet pills.

Diet pills are a huge industry within the U.S. So, there is a great deal of marketing, urging you to purchase these so-called wonder drugs. But, before you buy, you have to seriously consider whether these pills could jeopardize your health. While it may be important for you to lose weight, it is even more important for you to shield your body from harm. Weight loss is not miraculous. It takes a great deal of dedication and perseverance. Therefore, it is unlikely that you will find the secret to weight loss in a bottle. By changing your diet and exercising, you might notice only incremental changes in your weight. However, over the long term, you might be better able to maintain healthy weight loss by sticking with the tried-and-true formula of diet and exercise.

The Weight Loss Psychology

The Weight Loss Psychology

You see the razor-thin models gracing the covers of watch actors and actresses on the big screen who seem to never gain a pound. And you wonder: How do I differ from them? You may be surprised to learn that a number of famous people at one time had difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. But they were able to conquer their problem, thanks to a new-and-improved, healthy view of eating.

Plastic Surgery Procedure - Body contouring is a group of cosmetic surgery procedures that enable you to reshape your entire figure. Typically this is done after massive weight loss. Many times a patient is dissatisfied with the original shape of their body and multiple cosmetic surgery procedures can alleviate their discomfort and provide them with an aesthetically pleasing figure.

It is no surprise, then, that the magazine Psychology Today has explored the issue in-depth.

You may not realize it, but there is a certain psychology at work in successful weight loss. In October of 2004, the magazine posted an article on its website detailing the experiences of Diane Berry, a nurse practitioner who studied women who had shed at least 15 pounds and had maintained their weight loss for an average of seven years.

The women shared some important things in common. For instance, they all achieved their weight loss through either Weight Watchers or TOPS, which meant that they had a firm support network as they tried to maintain their weight. The group meetings were highly important, because they learned to recognize that they were certainly not alone in their struggles with weight. The women were also quite unusual because up to 90 percent of individuals who have lost weight end up putting it back on within five years. Another common trait of these women is that they appeared to undergo a profound mood shift as they made the transition from fat to thin. From all indications, they appeared to be depressed when they were heavy but, as they attempted to lose weight, their mood brightened.

For these women, healthy eating became a habit--a habit they refused to break. They themselves recognized the tremendous role that psychology plays in weight loss. They refused to give in to negative feelings of frustration and denial and chose a positive path instead. The women also made it a point to weigh themselves regularly so that they could chart their progress. And they recognized that maintaining weight loss would be a lifetime struggle. They knew that they could not attempt a weight loss program then put it back on the shelf. They had to learn new eating patterns that they could continue week in and week out. In some cases, they likened their struggle to that of an alcoholic. In other words, they recognized the gravity of their problem and took steps to correct the situation.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of these women's experiences was the fact that their weight loss actually came in spurts. At times, they regained their weight, but they did not let that deter them from their final goal. They simply viewed their setbacks as challenges that they needed to overcome. This may be the key psychological trait that separates successful dieters from unsuccessful ones--perseverance. In essence, these women were able to change their personalities in a positive way in order to achieve their long-term weight loss goals.

Another interesting aspect of this study was that it showed that the women who had undergone weight loss transformation were genuinely happy. This shows the tremendous psychological impact that weight loss can have on an individual. Once an individual is free from the burden of extra weight, he or she is better able to meet the challenges of life head-on. The dieter benefits from positive reinforcement, as relatives, friends, and co-workers congratulate him or her for the weight loss. In this way, losing weight can be quite a life-affirming experience and can lead to a more optimistic outlook on life.

It must be noted here that the psychology of weight loss is a complicated matter. There is no single ingredient that can turn a fat person into a thin one. However, recognizing that there is a psychological component to successful weight loss may, in fact, be half the battle. Once an individual recognizes that he or she is engaged in a psychological fight, he or she is better able to do battle. By retraining oneself to seek healthy approaches to diet, one can, in effect, mold oneself into a new individual--one that no longer lives to eat, but simply eats to live.

Hoodia..Mysterious Legend or Weight Loss Breakthrough

Every two to three years a new "weight Loss" product that promises a fast and easy result arrives on the scene. 99% of which only work for 1% of the population or, as in some products don't work for anyone. This year's biggest star appears to be Hoodia Gordonii. By now you have seen Hoodia on the news, read about Hoodia in popular magazines and more-then-likely have been reading up on Hoodia.

Hoodia, although not actually a cactus, is part of the cactus like family, the succlents.

But exactly what is Hoodia and why all the hoopla?

Hoodia in the wild, is found in the arid, southwestern part of Africa and grows from only 2-3 feet tall. It has prickly spikes which must be scraped off to reveal the inner flesh. Hoodia or Xhoba, as it is called by the San people, contains a molecule called P57 that actually tricks the brain into believing that you are full.

Originally used by the San People to help quench thirst and stave off hunger during lean times and food gathering trips, Hoodia now is being used by thousands worldwide to help control their weight by reducing hunger and cravings.

So why is Hoodia so different from previous weight control products?

Other then suppressing hunger, Hoodia currently has no other known side effects. No racing heart, no nausea, no diarrhea, no keeping you up late at night. Many Hoodia users find that they consume an average of 1,000 calories less per day. That's an average daily calorie savings of 50%. With a pound of fat being 3,500 calories you can see that it only takes approximately 30 days to lose 10 pounds.

No counting carbs, calories or purchasing special foods. You eat the foods you like, only less of them. Hoodia, is relatively inexpensive. Unlike previous products, Hoodia is affordable. Hoodia comes in several forms. There are pills, liquids, Coffee with Hoodia, Tea with Hoodia, chewy candy-like products and the list goes on. There is a Hoodia product to fit everyone's personality.

Are all Hoodia products alike? Absolutely not! Absolutely not! Absolutely not! I can't stress that enough. Here is what you should look for in your Hoodia product. The Hoodia plant has many cousins, which although can be called Hoodia they do not have the appetite suppressant power of Hoodia Gordonii. Only choose a Hoodia product that is made from Hoodia Gordonii. Hoodia is now farmed in other areas of the world like China or Mexico. Only South African Hoodia Gordonii is premium Hoodia Gordonii.

Read your product label. Does your Hoodia product contain binders and fillers? If so, you are paying for added ingredients and are getting less Hoodia. For maximum benefits you should be taking between 1,000 mgs - 3,000 mgs of Hoodia daily (1-3 grams). Check your product label to see how much Hoodia is in your product. If it's only 300 mgs per capsule you will need approximately 10 capsules per day for its full effect. If you choose a capsule, liquid or tea product that has 1,000 mgs per serving you will only need 3 servings per day. Although this product may appear on the surface to be more expensive it is actually less expensive per day.

Most people will feel Hoodia's appetite suppressant qualities the first day but it may take 3-5 days to feel the maximum effect, so give your product time to work. In closing remember to choose a product that is pure South African Hoodia Gordonii, with no binders or fillers and take 1-3 grams per day for maximum effect. And always check first with your physician or health care practitioner before taking Hoodia or any appetite suppressant product as you may have an underlying health condition or prescription medication that would prohibit its use.

Do not use if pregnant or nursing. Follow the product label instructions and don't use more then the recommended dosage. Also know that Hoodia products have not been evaluated by the FDA and therefore they are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Since Hoodia can drastically curb your appetite be sure to use your calories wisely. Choose fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meats, drink plenty of water and take a good vitamin-mineral product. As a Hoodia fan, so far I have lost 28 pounds without being hungry or feeling deprived. For me, Hoodia is a weightloss breakthrough.

Elite Personal Trainer Blasts New Over the Counter Weight Loss Pill

Consumers may soon be able to purchase a brand new over the counter weight loss pill. Federal health advisors have already given their go ahead, but it still needs FDA approval before it goes on sale nationwide. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare is in position to offer this fat blocking pill to the public. They are shooting for a release date by the end of this year.

Consumers want to know if this is ground breaking news or if this is another attempt to rob them of their hard earned cash. The difference between this new diet pill, called orlistat and currently being sold with a doctor's prescription as Xenical, and several others from the past are that orlistat is garnering nationwide media and public interest.

"Everyone is getting excited about taking a magic pill," states Lynn VanDyke, elite personal fitness professional and fitness nutritionist. "It all sounds brilliantly simple until we read about its side effects and cost." In 6 month clinical trials, obese people taking orlistat lost 5.3 - 6.2 pounds more than those given a placebo. Representatives from GlaxoSmithKline also announced that at $12-$25 per week for the pill over 5 million people in America would buy the drug if it sold over the counter.

VanDyke explains, "The corporations are planning on making over $1 billion per year in sales if orlistat is sold over the counter. As consumers we must educate ourselves and hold ourselves personally responsible. This drug has shown unpleasant side effects in half of the trial participants. That's just outrageous."

GlaxoSmithKline lists orlistat's possible side effects as loose and oily stools, gas, incontinence and oily spotting. Even the FDA panel members are concerned with how this diet pill will interact with diabetics, bulimics, organ transplant patients and those taking other prescription pills. Watchdog groups such as Public Citizen urged the panel to reject the company's application, calling it a "desperate attempt to revive this barely effective drug by an OTC switch."

"All in all, the magic pill leaves you bloated and oily. It stops working once you stop taking it. That adds up to between $288 and $600 per 6 months. That is how long the GlaxoSmithKline recommends taking this pill before stopping for a break. I would much rather learn a few simple tools on how to eat well and live a healthy life than take this so-called miracle pill," says VanDyke.

Consumers who are in dire straits to lose fat but are concerned with the side effects and cost of orlistat are being referred to the Melt the Fat Interactive Guide (more info at It provides detailed step-by-step processes that develop a healthy lifestyle filled with fitness, eating to live and life goal setting.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #32

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #32

Forgiveness! Is it hard or easy to forgive? What happens when we don't forgive? Right now, are you feeling anger, resentment or rejection in your body because you haven't forgiven? These are some great questions to ask yourself. Guess what? If you're not happy with your current weight, do you think you're holding on to the past? I would strongly encourage you to seek forgiveness and finally release the past. That anger, shame, resentment, rejection.....or whatever the emotion.... is manifesting in excess weight. Give it to God to handle so that you can go on with your life in radiant joy and get that negative energy out of your body. You want to feel vibrant, don't you?

You know, I've asked the Universe to support my desire to speak in front of several groups of women and my call has been answered. Having said this, during a recent speaking engagement while using the RET and EFT stress release process, I recently encountered a woman who was resistant in letting go of her anger towards someone from her past.

She acknowledged that she was resistant, but expressed that, "it couldn't be this simple to use RET and EFT to finally let go of this." She had held on to this perceived wrong doing and lived in struggle for so long that she would not allow herself a new way of thinking. She also expressed that she did not want this person "off the hook" that easily as well.

Remember forgiveness is not about condoning the behavior. It is about releasing it from your body, your being. When you don't release it, those emotions tied to not forgiving are in your cells and manifest themselves in physical symptoms.

Do you know who we need to also forgive? Ourselves!

When I was going through my illness years ago, I got the opportunity to watch Iyanla Vanzant on Oprah and was captivated by her story of overcoming obstacles and triumphing. She wrote a book entitled, One Day My Soul Opened Up, and her message is invaluable. I am providing an excerpt from that book:

"Once you become willing to grow, you will discover that you are not at all angry with someone for doing something to you. You are actually angry with yourself. You are angry because you now understand how you helped create your own experiences. You also recognize that the purpose of those experiences was to teach you the truth about yourself, and remind you of the truth about God. Willingness is also an excellent vision cleanser. It gives you the ability to see yourself in other people. When you enter a relationship, you are going to meet yourself in the actions, behaviors and beliefs of those involved in the relationship with you. In some way, those people are going to do and say to you the very things you have been doing and saying to yourself.

You will come face to face with all the things about you that you know, and a few of which you are completely unaware. You are going to meet your good side, your bad side and the side for which you probably have no name. Because willingness works like an antibacterial agent, it will remove the germs of guilt, shame, anger, fear and resentment, which could deny you the opportunity to get really clear. Once you are clear, you will be able to see exactly who you think you are by looking at what you expect and tolerate from other people."

WOW!! Very powerful message, right? I read this and could see myself in my interactions with others. It was very profound and life-changing for me. I needed to forgive myself for many things, and one of those was thinking that I was responsible for my dad's death. My dad died when I was fourteen years of age, and I carried with me for many years the burden of that perceived wrong doing. I manifested many physical symptoms as a result. You can read about my journey in Close Kept Secrets to Overcoming Illness.

So let's practice forgiveness of ourselves and others:

Take out a mirror and look into it while reading the following statements. If you don't have a hand-held one, then go stand by a mirror.

(Fill in your name), I forgive you for (fill in the blank with whatever it is you need to forgive yourself for). I know that you were doing the best you could.

I forgive you for

I forgive you for.

I forgive you for

There might be several things you want to forgive yourself for or you might just have a few things. The important thing is to focus on forgiving so you can release it. Now, do this same process for all the others in your life you want to forgive by filling in the blank with their name(s). We're going to end with an EFT process and I've outlined the points below.

Use your index finger and middle fingers together and tap on the points while saying the following 5 or more times:

1) EB - Beginning of the eyebrow, closest to the bridge of the nose

2) SE - Side of the eye (either eye) closest to the ear

3) UE - Under center of the eye on cheekbone (either eye)

4) UN - Under nose

5) UL - Under lip

6) CB - Right below the collarbone (either side)

7) UA - Under the arm, about 4 inches below the arm pit (either arm)

8) CR - Crown of head. Tap all over the top of the head.

9) Form a fist and rub in a clockwise motion over your heart

I love myself! I love everyone who has showed up for me! I am perfect just as God created me! I am powerful! I am beautiful! I am owning all my power! I am responsible for my future! I am unconditional love! I am moving through life with ease!

While rubbing your heart, say I love you (your name). Forgive yourself and others, and have that freedom from those burdens. You will radiate such amazing joy and love that people will wonder if you're on some kind of drug. You can tell them you are HIGH!

See how incredible this is. That's why energy release sessions have long term value. You can actually release things from your past and be done with them. I'm available to help you release everything you've been holding on to. You can even do these in the comfort of your own home and get the same incredible results as if you were right here in the physical. Call me and ask your important questions. God intends for you to show your light. Is your light shining bright? I can't see it. Illuminate it brightly so that I can see it from where I sit in Bremerton, Washington.

Simple Weight Loss

Active weight watchers consistently ask what foods can I eat and what foods should I avoid. This is a genuine thing because if you have set a goal to lose weight you want to be sure that you are eating the right things.

The good news is that there are very few foods that you should avoid such as:

- Any type of fast food. (Pizza's, burgers etc.)

- All soft drinks that fizz.

- Never drink beer when you eat, or eat when you drink beer. Beer will stop your body from breaking down fats.

What is more important is how much you eat. The excess weight that you put on is the difference between calories digested and calories burnt off through exercise. Therefore if you lead an active life you are able to consume more calories and your activity will burn them off. If your lifestyle lacks physical activity you must consume less calories and search for ways to become more active. Therefore the size of the serving depends upon your lifestyle. The wife of a physical worker needs to serve him larger portions because he needs it to create the energy required to get through a physically exhausting day.

The risk that she takes is that by serving large meals to him she tends to serves similarly large meals to herself; often using the excuse that she is only eating two-thirds the amount he consumes. If her activity level is only half of his then two-thirds could be over-eating. In the developed world adults consume on average 3,500 calories each day. Adults actually require 2,000 calories to function properly. Now imagine lowering your calorie intake to 3,000 per day. The 500 calories less consumed each day equates to 3,500 calories per week less or six days food every seven days.

It just happens that 3,500 calories equals one pound in weight and if you can lose one pound (450 grams) each week you are at the optimum weight loss level. As a general rule diets that reduce weight by greater than one pound per week are short term and 99% of people put that weight back on. One-pound weight loss per week is the most sustainable amount.

How can you achieve this reduction in calories consumed? Easy, at the start of each day decide what you are not going to consume that day. Say Monday becomes no bread day. That means that you do not eat any bread on Monday. More importantly you don't eat more of something else to compensate. Tuesday may be no potato day. Wednesday no cakes or cookies etc. etc. At the same time as you do this you increase your exercise level. Park the car at the furthest point from the supermarket door. Use the stairs rather than an escalator. Take a walk after dinner. Just do things that you've been avoiding and see how quickly you lose weight and keep it off.

Strength Training and Weight Loss

So you've started out on your weight loss journey. Congratulations on making the first steps. By now, you will have looked at your nutritional needs and added some sort of cardio such as walking, swimming or a fitness class to become more active. It's time now to make that daunting step into weight (or resistance) training. There is a common fear among some people, especially women, that if they were to start weight training they will start to look like the next Arnold Schwarzenegger. Truth of the matter is, those kind of results only happen when you specifically train for them.

To begin with, diet pills are quick-acting--we may see results after only a little bit of time has elapsed. As a result, we may gain confidence and lose even more weight as a result of our success with diet pills. Other people--friends, relatives, co-workers--may notice our weight loss and may compliment us as a result. Consequently, we may be motivated to work even harder at our weight loss.

5 good reasons to add a weight training program to your exercise program:

* It strengthens weakened joints, making them more stable and less injury-prone

* It not only works the muscles - it also strengthens bones

* Results are fast - regardless of age & sex. Your strength can increase by up to 72% in the first 4 weeks

* It not only improves the overall tone of your body, it will also improve your posture - which will help in making you look slimmer

* It helps to burn kJ faster. Lean muscle tissue is 17-25 times more active than fat.

This means you will burn more kJ even at rest! By adding 1-2kg of muscle to your body - you'll burn an extra 290-418kJ a day When you first start a weight program, don't be disheartened if you gain a couple of kilos. It is often said that Lean Muscle Tissue weighs more than fat. Do not listen to this hype. 1kg of fat weighs the same as 1kg of muscle - muscle tissue is more toned and compact than fat so you will start to look much slimmer.

If the scales are not moving, don't despair. Weighing yourself is not your only means of tracking you progress. Several other ways exist to help keep track of your progress and find out if your gain is muscle or fat.

* Measure yourself. Get out a tape measure and measure various parts of your body - common areas to include are hips, waist, thighs [mid and top], bust/chest, arms, calves & stomach. You won't need to measure yourself every week - once every 4 weeks is usually best, as you won't see much of a difference on a week-to-week basis.

* Use an article of clothing to help measure your progress. That pair of jeans or skirt that is a little tight is perfect. If you know absolutely nothing about weights and their proper use it is best to visit your local gym and see the staff there. They will show you exactly what to do and even draw up a program for you if you wish. If you are at school, visit your PE department and ask one of your teachers to help you out. Most high schools have their own weights area for student use. They can show you what you need to do, how to do it and help you keep track of your progress.

If seeing someone or exercising with someone is intimidating for you (or you don't have the money for the gym) you could try an 'at home' video or DVD. You will need to buy some free weights (dumbbells or barbells) check out the program before you buy any equipment.

A couple of things to remember if you go this option:

* Watch the video before you actually start participating. This way you can see what you will be doing and the equipment needed to participate.

* Make sure the instructors give a "beginners option". This means there should be someone in the group using no weights - follow them until you are comfortable and confident with the program to add weights. In addition, there should be a section at the beginning of the video (or DVD menu) the focus on showing you the proper form and technique of the lifts required.

* When you first start using the weights, if at anytime, the weights become too heavy for you, STOP. Change to a smaller weight or revert to the beginners' option. The old saying "No pain, no gain" is completely outdated - you can do more damage then good. Listen to your body, it'll tell you if it isn't coping.

* Another point to keep in mind - the video/DVD should have a cardio/warm-up section at the start - this is important because you shouldn't start a weights session with cold muscles. A warm-up should last between 5-15mins and include gentle aerobic activity. Some programs alternate between cardio and weights workouts but it is important that the starting warm-up gets the heart beating. If you don't feel that it is good enough or you want to make sure you warming up properly - go for a walk [15mins minimum] before you start the session.

* On that same note, make sure that the video/DVD has a "cool down" at the end of the session. This can include a number of things, most usually include mini Pilates/Yoga like sessions at the end to stretch out the muscle groups.

* Aim for good technique when every time. Don't try to keep up with the instructors. If you need to take a break or slow a section down then do it. You want to get healthy not injured!

Weights not your thing? Going on holiday?

Try using resistance bands. These bands are usually used by people in rehab or older people who can't lift weights. They give the same kind of workout as actual weights but they tend to be a little easier on you. The added bonus with resistance bands is that if you go away for a holiday or for the weekend to visit family, etc they are easy to pack into your bag so you don't have to miss out on your workouts. They also weigh less and don't take up much space in the suitcase. Add in a daily walk or swim and you've got your cardio covered as well, so there's no need to 'slack off' while abroad.

Weight Loss Information - Well, here it is, late night TV and I'm flipping through the channels trying to find something good to watch. As I'm surfing the tube, I notice a huge amount of weight loss infomercials. And you know what, most of them literally make me sick to my stomach. Not because I despise TV, but because I can't stand it when companies blatantly lie to unsuspecting consumers and make MILLIONS in the process doing it.

Weight Loss Lesson - I was watching a spiritual program recently and the person asked a question and then his answer really caught me off guard. I'm going to ask you the question he asked and then give you his answer. It will definitely make you think.

Weight Loss Lesson - If you were going to travel to the other side of the world, you'd need to plan it. I mean, you're not going to just book a seat on a plane, take off and just take it all as it comes. You need to plan your finances, organize time off from work, get a visa, book accommodation, the list goes on.

Weight Loss Maintenance - A quote from Nelson Mandela illustrates this in showing you that you are an AWESOME child of God. I look at this quote each and every day when I do my energy circles. I encourage you to print this and tape it somewhere so that you see it everyday.

Weight Loss Operation - "There goes Godzilla" and I was stunned to see the neighbourhood children point and run as I glared at them. I knew that I was plump, but Godzilla, I rushed in dumped all the groceries at the door and checked my self out in the mirror. I mean...after a long time, really checked myself in the mirror.
