On the other hand, it is not really health consciousness that bothers most people but weight consciousness. Body weight has come to be not just one indication of an unhealthy constitution; it seems to have become the only indication of ill health. As a matter of fact, there is so much hype about this that, a few dimples here and a few dimples there, means you are already on your death bed, and you can start saying good bye to your loved ones.


For most of us, wondering what's the best way to lose weight, looking at our selves in full-length mirrors is nothing short of sheer torture. We are more ashamed of our midsections than the skeletons that we may have stashed up in the closet. Oh, the word skeleton sounds so enticing doesn't it, to be devoid of all flesh and fat! There you have it! This is the simple reason why the latest "best way to lose weight" diet or any diet for that matter sells like a get-rich-quick scheme. Even if it is an old wife's tale, if you can market it with flair then you are a winner.


Before you know it, it is all over the place. The hapless consumer, (mind you, that includes every consumer who has been talked into believing that he or she is soon to die because of those extra pounds) is virtually bombarded by reviews and testimonials on the latest diet. And before you know it, it has become the latest fad. It is a rage and people all over the country will be swearing by it. Nope, there is no way out, if you are an intelligent human being, even mildly concerned about what is happening in the world around you, then whoa, here come the snowballs- Internet spam, TV ads, infomercials, news programs, magazines, radio segments, billboards, junk mail, bestsellers, and airplane banners bombard, no stones left unturned.


But then nothing is permanent in this world except change, and when the latest diet has had enough takers, (read that as gullible if you may) and the discoverers (or inventors) of the diet have made enough money, then ding-dong, it is ring out the old, bring in the new. There is always an improvement; there is always some new research that has been done, and then the catch line is something new, something refreshingly different. Oh, you think that the research we mentioned was about how to actually lose weight, wrong you are, all the research that goes on as far as these 'diet makers' go, is how to market the latest diet and how to convince the consumer that this thing is better than the last. So there you have it, it's a whole new story this time and the end results are even more promising than the last. A typical story of old wine in the new bottle, huh?


Well, that's precisely what these fad diets are all about. And then when you think that you have tried it all, when you are on the brink of despair, here comes the panacea, the only thing that is guaranteed to reduce those few pounds or you get your money back, and since it is a money back offer, you reason that you have nothing else to lose and there you are going on the same merry-go-round-again. A rather vicious circle, isn't it? But that's how it goes and the going is really quite remarkable. So here we are right at the center of the vicious circle of one diet after the other.

"Yeah, But It's Too Radical"

In this culture, it's fascinating what we perceive as too radical. We think it's too radical to eat fruits and vegetables. We think it's too radical to eat a fresh, green-leafy salad every day. We think it's too radical to eliminate meat, cheese, white sugar, white flour, white salt, processed foods, and extra oils from our diets. We think it's too radical to exercise daily for one hour. If eating fruits and vegetables is too radical, then what would we call cutting off a breast or a testicle because of cancer? What would we call getting burned by radiation or poisoned by chemotherapy? What would we call getting totally paralyzed on one side by a stroke? What would we call getting a limb cut off because of diabetic-induced gangrene?


Plastic Surgery Gone - As with just about anything in life, there are many things that can go wrong with plastic surgery. But just as we don't hear news reports about the millions of planes that have taken off and landed safely, there is not the same attention devoted to the many success stories of cosmetic surgeries as there is to plastic surgery gone wrong.


What would we call being confined to a nursing home because we have aged way too soon from neglecting to take care of ourselves by eating health- and life-giving foods and exercising every day?


And what would we call getting our chests buzzed open by a saw and getting our rib cages ripped apart to patch up some artery in our hearts? And we think that eating fruits and vegetables is too radical? Perhaps it's time to rethink what's radical and what's just plain common sense, completely doable and enjoyable, once we put our minds to it.


Perhaps it's time to discover and rise above the big "yeah, but," or "yeah, buts," that sabotage health and fitness and could rob us of the opportunity for a long life filled with energy, hope, mobility, activity, purpose, and inner joy. Perhaps it's time to reach for optimum health on every level--physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual--and love every moment of the precious and fleeting gift called life.

Yeah, But It Won't Kill Me" Such a familiar cry: "I'll just go ahead and eat that--it won't kill me." No, one breakfast of eggs, bacon, brown-colored white toast and butter will not kill you. Two cups of coffee a day will not kill you. One morning doughnut will not kill you. One piece of pizza (and who eats just one piece) will not kill you. One roast beef and cheese with mayo on rye will not kill you. One piece of chocolate will not kill you. One glass of wine will not kill you.

One dinner of fried chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy will not kill you.

One bowl of ice cream will not kill you. One cookie will not kill you. One Big Mac will not kill you. One can of pop will not kill you. One bag of chips will not kill you. One of anything will not kill you.


The problem is that most of us do not just eat just one of these things once in a while. We fill up on these very same foods, or some facsimile thereof, every day. When we stack up the supposedly harmless "ones" day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, these "ones" could likely do just that--kill you.


Instead of waiting until you find yourself trapped in a box with some horrible disease or condition or over weight by 30 or 50 pounds with your health and fitness spiraling downward, why not start thinking about what foods and pseudo-foods you are eating right now, every meal, every day. You, your body, and your life, now and in the future, are worth your efforts right now. Remember, body first; everything else second.

Yeah, But It Takes Too Much Time" Your life is busy. The food you prepare and eat now is the same food that you have been preparing and eating for years. It takes little time and no extra effort. You like that--quick and mindless. Sure. You would love to explore the ideal way of eating to promote and maintain health--yours and your family's. But where would you find the time to not only learn about this new way of eating, but also to shop for and prepare those foods. The thought boggles your brain so you give up before you even try.


Amazingly enough, once you learn which foods are the best foods to eat, it takes less time and less effort to shop for and prepare those meals. Food shopping evolves into a list-less no-brainer and preparation is minimal. How much thought and time does it take to shop for, wash and cut up vegetables to make a large salad or to steam? How much effort does it take to wash an apple or two, open your mouth, bite down, and chew? When it comes to saving time, fruit and some vegetables are the fastest fast foods there are.


Furthermore, in the whole scheme of things, what takes more time--shopping and preparing plant-based meals or spending hours and even days or months receiving treatment for some condition or disease that resulted from the lack of good nutrition? Eating correctly, just like exercise, doesn't take time--it gives you time, when it counts, at the end of your life. Not only that, eating correctly and daily exercise enhance your ideal weight, optimum level of energy, health and fitness, and the quality of every precious moment that life offers you.

"Yeah, But I Don't Like Broccoli"

Let's admit it. Sometimes, in spite of your intentions to eat better, your big "but" may be that you either like certain foods, and you use your adult option of continuing to eat them; and/or you don't like certain foods and you opt not to eat them no matter how good they are for you. You like your meat, chocolate, and coffee. You like your cheese, ice cream, milk, bread, bacon, pop, chips, cookies, French fries, junk and all the rest. By golly, you are an adult. It's a free and bountiful country, and you are not sacrificing your favorite foods--no matter what.


On the other hand, you may not like fresh, green salads, fruits, and certain vegetables. No one or nothing can force you into eating foods you don't like. You are not a child. You can eat whatever you want to eat. Yes, you can eat whatever you want but not without consequences, be they good consequences from your choices or bad consequences--consequences that just happen to affect your body and your life. Okay, so you don't like cauliflower? Pick a different vegetable. There are plenty of vegetables from which to choose. You don't like any vegetables? Then maybe it's time to retrain your spoiled American taste buds to enjoy the variety of flavors and textures offered by vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans.


You don't want to give up your all-time favorites? Try filling up on the good-for-you foods first, then you may not have the same desire for the foods that rob you of good nutrients, weight loss and control, and good health. If you are motivated to look better, feel better, and move better, the next time the little child in you protests that she doesn't like something, consider making the adult decision to eat it anyway--just because it is good for you and your life may depend on it!

Yeah, But I Have to Cook For My Husband"

Many of us women say we would change the way we eat if only we didn't have to cook for our families. "I would love to change the way I eat, but I have to cook for my family. Preparing two meals? Are you kidding? I don't have the time." Between work and home, women feel lucky to just get the shopping done and one half-way decent meal on the table, much less two. There is no doubt that if you feel like you have to prepare favorite foods for your husband and/or children, then it is a bit challenging to change your own eating habits without trying to change the way your family eats--challenging, but easier than you may think.


A feeble paunch around the mid section and he is done for. The catch line then is 'start saying your prayers'. Diets have hit the world like a ton of bricks and the world has fallen for it hook, line and sinker. If there ever is a wishing well, there is no doubt about it that the majority of the human race, (at least those who belong to the modern world) would wish to lose a couple of pounds.


The hardest part about eating differently from your family is not the time and energy it takes to make the meals. The hardest part is preventing the prepared food that you also like, but are trying not to eat, from flying into your mouth. It actually takes very little extra time and effort to eat correctly, no matter what your family eats. A commonly prepared American dinner is a meat- or fish-centered meal with a vegetable salad (hopefully--they need to eat raw, fresh vegetables too) and side dishes of vegetables, including potatoes. Prepare the exact same meal for you and your family.


While they are contently eating the usual fare, you will center your meal on the salad and vegetables. In fact, if you truly fill up on these foods, then you will have little desire for the meat part of the meal. If you do indulge, you will eat a smaller portion. Simple. Your family is happy. You are happy because you are getting your life in line with your noble intentions of adopting better eating habits for weight loss and maintenance, health, and fitness. It's true that your taste buds may feel a bit neglected for a while, but, if you are patient, they will change to enjoy the best-for-you foods.
