Findings published in the January 15, 2002 Journal of the American Medical Association state that at least 47 million American adults - or more than one in five - have "metabolic syndrome", a disorder that often includes a beer belly, high blood pressure, poor cholesterol readings and high blood sugar, according to a disturbing new study. A "beer belly" is not just from drinking beer, it is usually formed from undigested food in the lower intestines!


Metabolic syndrome has been recognized since at least the 1920s, though it has been called different things over the years. Though experts say the syndrome may be caused by a combination of genes and lifestyle factors, lifestyle - including overeating and a lack of exercise - are probably the most important factors, said Dr. Earl Ford of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who led the study. ''When you consider that 50 to 60 million Americans have hypertension, about 60 percent of adults qualify as overweight or obese, and there are 16 million Americans with diabetes, I knew the number would be fairly large,'' Ford said. Metabolic syndrome greatly increases the risk of diabetes, heart attacks and stroke.


The CDC reached its estimate by using the first-ever specific definition of the syndrome developed by the National Institutes of Health. The definition could help doctors identify and treat patients by getting them to lose weight, eat better and get more exercise. According to the NIH definition, metabolic disorder is present when a patient has any three or more symptoms: a waist measuring at least 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women; levels of triglycerides - fats that circulate in the blood - of at least 150 milligrams per deciliter; HDL levels of less than 40 mgs in men and less than 50 mgs in women; blood pressure of at least 135/80; and blood sugar of at least 110 mgs.


Dr. Margo Denke, a professor of medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said ''This is one syndrome that is exquisitely lifestyle-sensitive - it's an area where we can get people to pay attention and if they do pay attention, they're big rewards,'' she said.

Choosing the Right Weight Loss Supplements for a Thinner, Healthier Body


Obesity is an epidemic in the West, but it is fast becoming a problem in other areas of the world as well, as people become more accustomed to eating unhealthy convenience foods and start to lead more sedentary lifestyles. Can weight loss supplements ease the problem and help a person shed those excess pounds? There may be evidence that they could do just this. But wait! Let me say from the outset that no matter how many weight loss supplements you take, they won't do you any good at all if you continue to take in more calories that you burn. If you come across a supplement that claims that you will lose weight just by taking it -- even if you eat all the food you want and don't exercise -- stay away from it. Either it will have no effect at all, or it will make you very sick.


Always remember that a healthy diet and good exercise are the essential components of an effective weight loss regimen. A weight loss supplement is just used to speed the process along just a little bit. There are many kinds of weight loss food supplements out in the market today, and they have different functions and mechanisms. Some supplements function on the principle of thermogenics, that is, the body's process of making the metabolism run faster to burn fat faster and more efficiently. A number of herbal supplements can contain ingredients that stimulate the metabolism, such as ephedra (ma huang), green tea extract, caffeine, guarana, or synephrine.


CBS correspondent Lesley Stahl even went to the Kalahari Desert to try hoodia herself, and she says that not only did she not feel hungry all day, but that she had no desire to eat or drink at all. Some herbal supplements said to promote weight loss contain an ingredient called phaseolus vulgaris, which is extracted from the white kidney bean. These supplements are also known as carb blockers, or carbohydrate blockers. They prevent the body from absorbing starches, and are beneficial to those on a controlled-carbohydrate diet. Even more popular as weight loss supplements are so-called fat blockers, which, as the name implies, inhibit the body's absorption of fat. Chitosan, a substance derived from shellfish, is the main ingredient in fat blockers. It is an indigestible fiber that absorbs fat from foods. However, it is not suitable for people who are allergic to shellfish.


Other diet pills have the effect of increasing lean muscle mass or reducing fat, or both. Supplements that contain chromium picolinate are likely to be helpful and safe, according to human studies. Clinical trials also show that sometimes chromium has no effect on body weight, even though it can increase lean muscle and decrease weight. Still, there are concerns about its safe use in the long run. Another substance that shows similar promise is conjugated linoleic acid, which is found in beef and dairy foods. But again, more studies are needed to assess its effectiveness in weight loss and lean muscle mass-building.


The same goes for hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB), which is a by-product of the breakdown of leucine, an amino acid. Sometimes it can be confusing to choose from among the many weight loss supplements available today, most of which have heavy marketing and advertising hype behind them. Natural Weight Loss - The missing Link

The whole subject of weight loss is fraught with confusion. Advice given by one expert is very often contradicted by another. The problem is, most of the experts are affiliated to organisations with specific agendas. It is a bit like going to a financial advisor who receives a fee for recommending a certain products. At the end of the day these people have to make a living so how can you really trust their advice as the best? The weight loss industry is no different, every sector has its experts providing advice heavily biased to the sector they represent.


Synephrine encourages the breakdown of fat cells; guarana contains guaranine, whose effects are very similar to those of caffeine; and green tea not only promotes thermogenesis, it has numerous healthy effects on the body as well. Ephedra was a popular ingredient in many weight loss supplements, until it was banned because of associations with adverse events like heart attacks, stroke, and death. Some diet pills and herbal supplements work to suppress the appetite and reduce food cravings. For instance, plantago psyllium -- derived from the seeds of Plantago ovato -- is said to cause a feeling of fullness, thereby discouraging more food intake. But perhaps the most famous appetite suppressant is hoodia, which is derived from a prickly plant that grows in South Africa's Kalahari Desert and which has been part of the diet of the bushmen there for centuries. Hoodia works by making the brain believe that the stomach is full.


Regardless of the advice given there does exist a set of fundamental rules to achieve safe but natural weight loss. These rules do not favour any particular diet nor do they promise the world. If you have jumped from one diet to the next hoping for a miracle you will know what I mean. Conventional diets, for most of us, are in the main doomed to failure. We are asked to break a lifetime of habits, switch to some new regime and avoid the foods that we actually like! I ask you, are we not setting ourselves up for failure? Don't get me wrong these diets do and can work for some people. After all they're all based on the fundamental principle that providing there is a calorific deficit after you apply the equation calories in minus calories out, you will lose weight.


Natural weight loss is all about losing weight safely and in accordance with how we have evolved. You just cannot ignore the last 100,000 years and only consider the last 100. It just doesn't make sense! Of course, we need to consider how we live today. Technology might have advanced at a remarkable speed but nature certainly hasn't! You see, we are continually fighting effects with effects. Rather than finding the root cause of a problem we create something new to solve the problem. Our approach to to fighting fat is to invent a low fat product. One can only guess at the problems we are setting up for ourselves. But that's ok, we'll just invent a new medicine :)


One thing is certain in this world though, what may be good for one person is not necessarily good for another. It is no good trying to sell the benefits of meat to a vegetarian. The last thing a marathon runner wants is to bulk up and a body builder will not thank you for asking them to cut protein from their diet! All of these people have different needs so any one diet won't suit all. It is clear, there are many different roads one can take on the journey to good health and that each of us can only make decisions that are right for us. However, what is also clear is that somewhere we have lost our way. We have tried to fight the effects of modern day obesity with modern day answers and all we seem to be doing is to make the problem worse.


Isn't it about time we looked at things in a different way? We shouldn't be on a 'diet', we should change our habits for life! If we start out on the assumption that this is just a temporary thing then we are doomed to failure, simply because we start to do the things we were denied all the more. How often do you see people lose weight quickly and then put it all back on in a relatively short time? I guess quite a lot. Just imagine the long term effect this has on our health. The correct way to live a healthy life is not to diet at all. Don't deny yourself anything but begin the process of changing to a more natural way of living by introducing new healthy habits. You will find that over time the crave/binge cycle will diminish and you will start to lose weight naturally.

Rapid Weight Loss Diets: Fact or Fiction?

Are there any effective rapid weight loss diets? Most nutritionists agree that any ultra low-calorie diets (that is, anything less than 1000 calories) can affect your body in a negative way. There are ways to help jump start weight loss, however:


1. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

In general, unprocessed and natural foods require more energy to digest and/or leave you feeling satisfied quicker. This will help your body increase metabolism and reduce caloric intake. Avoid refined grains such as rice and white bread.

2. Eat fiber.

Fiber helps you feel full faster, longer. The effect is obvious - you eat less. Any doctor worth his/her salt will tell you the most effective way to lose weight is to use more calories than you consume; think of fiber as a healthy, easy way to satisfy your hunger while dieting.


An estrogen-lowering program will include:

- Increase your fiber intake. That happens two ways: 1. Eat as much as you can by choosing fruits, vegetables and whole grains as your high fiber carbohydrate choices and then add a fiber supplement (Fiber Source 7) to consume 30 to 50 grams of fiber daily. - Increase the indoles (cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower) in your diet. That also happens two ways: Eat as much as you can and supplement with an indole-3-carbinol supplement (EllagiGuard). Target 3 servings a day.

3. Cut back on sugar.

You can think of sugar as the reverse of fiber - it doesn't make you feel full, and the insulin spike and crash that it causes will make you crave even more sugar. This is potentially an endless cycle, so it's best to stay away from soda/pop, donuts, and other sugar-laden sweets.


4. Drink plenty of water.

Water is actually one of the most effective ways to lose weight. Doctors point out that it's not about drinking lots of water, but enough to keep your body constantly hydrated - about 6-8 glasses a day. When you avoid dehydration, you increase your metabolic rate and suppress appetite - which slows weight gain.

5. Exercise

Yeah, this is the part we all hate - thankfully, you only need a moderate level of exertion to burn fat. In fact, all you want to do is just break a sweat while jogging or walking - anymore will shift your body into stamina training, instead of fat burning mode. Another bonus - exercising regularly keeps your body in a fat burning mode even when you're not exercising.

5 Steps to Hormone Health and Weight Loss

Our hormone health effects our bodies in many ways but one specific way is an increase in weight. Hormonally challenged women gain weight around their middle between the armpits and the top of the thighs. Often their arms are normal, their legs are normal and from the neck up they look great!
