The Truth about Weight Loss Marketing

 

Weight loss, diets and "carbs" are common household topics. There is always a new pill or product that really is supposed to work. Whether it's for burning fat or removing cellulite. The truth is, manufacturers are feeding on the false hopes of so many people who would do anything to lose weight and in the quickest amount of time. Here are three red flags about weight loss marketing that the consumer should know.

1)There is no such thing as a magic pill.
There is no pill or supplement that can make you stronger, bigger or leaner. When you see models or actors in ads promoting a supplement, we need to realize that they do not look that way because of the pill they are advocating. The truth is most of these models have a genetic edge; an unhealthy exercise routine, rigid eating habits and may have had cosmetic surgery. They are promoting that supplement because they have a financial agreement to do so. Also if you look closely, you can also see in tiny print at the bottom of any magazine or television ad the words: "These results are not typical. Must be combined with an exercise and nutrition program". So, if a claim seems too good to be true, it probably is.

3)Where did we hear about the latest weight loss craze?
One thing most people do not realize is the lack of regulation in the fitness industry. There is no committee, agency or administration filtering out the inaccurate information; making the majority of what you read misleading. Most articles in local papers or current fitness magazines are feeding on the quick fix mentality and an individual's unrealistic goals. The truth is the public is continually misinformed on how to actually lose weight and keep it off. This puts the credibility of studies and conclusions in question. There are certain steps to making a source reliable for health and fitness information. First, the studies should be published in scientific peer-reviewed journals (case studies and testimonials are not objective and science-based proof). The studies need to breplicated by an outside source. That means, by someone not linked and with no financial backing to the original study. Most often this does not happen.

 

So many times you will see a blurb on a single study, done by Dr. X (a doctor's name improves credibility to most people) recommending a plan or pill. This study often has many loopholes in its methods and has never been replicated for proof of credibility. Did you know that as of today, Atkins has not published one single study in a scientific peer reviewed journal? This "diet" has been around for over twenty-five years. Do you think they've had enough time to do it? Then why haven't they? The point is not to believe everything that you see or read. The credibility of the research is so important.

Keep these red flags in mind next time you pick up the latest fitness magazine or see a commercial for the next fat burning craze. Manufacturers will continue to offer products and "fat burning" solutions to the majority of society that is struggling with their weight. It's up to you to be skeptical of their claims and look for their credibility.

Weight Loss : Keep it Simple

An increasing trend over the last few years has been for diet books to make things complex. I expect it's because each one vies with the other to come out with some brand new theory or other about why we gain weight and why their diet plan is the only one to help us lose it. And the low fat, low calorie stuff has already been covered!

 

2)If a diet states that some foods are good or bad for you.
The truth is there is no such thing as a good food or a bad food. What's really important is the quantity of that food and how often you consume it. Any diet or supplement that speaks of an energy fuel as bad is missing the boat on healthy nutrition. A proper balance is necessary not negating entire food groups to fit the newest "diet plan". These "diet plans" are temporary fixes that cannot be sustained for long term and come at a costly price to your body, especially your metabolism and endocrine system. If you play around with the homeostasis of your body, you will be disappointed with the outcome. The body's main objective is survival. Yo-yo dieting will bring you further and further away from successful weight loss. We need to wonder, if any of these diets actually worked, why is there a new one every few months? If they worked so well, why haven't they been used towards the cure for obesity?


My problem with this new trend is that the diets all involve more counting and while basic maths was never a problem at school I don't want to use it at the dinner table to know what I can eat. And while counting calories is one thing (most of us are probably walking encyclopaedias by now with how many calories our usual choices contain) the new diets are so much more complex.

With the new diets we need to know carbohydrate counts and fat grams, GI index and all sorts. And sometimes it's not enough to have a straight count we have to work out our percentage of carbohydrates, proteins and fat (yes, follow one particular diet and you have to balance these at EVERY meal).

Somehow I think food was not meant to be eaten like this. It was meant to be enjoyed. Most of us know what is healthy and what is not. Most of us know we'd be better with an apple than a cream cake. Most of us know we need a good variety of all types of food to feel great.

The new diets will not last. More complex stuff will come along and it's sad because we could all lose weight with a few SIMPLE changes.

1. Make healthy choices for most of the food you eat 2. Vary your choices 3. Occasionally enjoy a small portion of whatever it is you love even if it's high in fat or sugar or whatever 4. Eat only when you're physically hungry 5. Stop when you're just satisfied, not stuffed 6. Fill half your plate at lunch and dinner with vegetables or salad, quarter carbs and a quarter protein.

If everyone who wanted to lose weight just followed these simple guidelines there would be many more successful dieters around and a lot less hassle in losing weight.

Seven Keys to Permanent Weight Loss Success (Part 1 of 4)

 

Terrorists are aptly named because their tactics are designed to strike fear into the hearts of the people. This fear is often irrational. Many people bide their time suffering anxiety over the next unlikely attack while falling prey to a monster that kills more people every week than those murdered on September 11th. This killer has no hidden agenda and destroys without prejudice. Those who are unfortunate enough to meet this nemesis often suffer prolonged pain before eventually succumbing and "giving up the breath" as death was described in ancient Egypt.

 

What could possibly be so terrible?

In the year 2000, the leading preventable cause of death was tobacco. Only a few decades ago, doctors and priests would smoke during commercials and share their favorite brand of cigarette. Today, there is a stigma associated with smoking because we understand the link between tobacco and death. Unfortunately, there is a new competitor who is rapidly gaining ground. This competitor claimed thousands lives in the year 2000, and was the second leading preventable cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Who is this deadly threat to society?

Poor diet and lack of exercise.

 

Surprised?

Thousands of people die every day due to poor eating habits and lack of regular exercise. The death certificate won't mention their favorite fast food combo meal or the fact that they would rather watch the latest golf tournament than take a stroll through the park. Instead, one of the many degenerative diseases that have been conclusively linked to nutrition and exercise will stake its claim over another life.

 

Society spends more time and energy worrying about violent threats than dealing with this leading cause of death. While the popularity of products and services designed to address the situation is growing - in fact, the health and wellness industry is en route to become the next trillion-dollar industry according to economist Paul Zane Pilzer - the rate of obesity, overweight, and conditions related to poor diet and lack of exercise such as type II "adult onset" diabetes is increasing. In fact, adult onset diabetes is now being diagnosed in enough children that most medical professionals simply refer to it as "type II."

 

Perhaps one reason why this epidemic is so hard to combat is that people are focused on the solution as a product or service, rather than a process. To quit smoking, many people receive counseling, join groups or follow systems because it's not as simple as tossing the last pack (the author is one of the fortunate few who was able to stop smoking "cold turkey" but found it far more difficult to overcome his poor eating habits). Overweight and obesity is a condition related to behavior and patterns that have taken years to create, so the notion that some magic product will suddenly undo the thousands of days of programming is absurd. Successful, permanent weight loss is a process, not an event.

 

During a recent seminar that I conduct, participants explored the concept of just how powerful the mind is and how this relates to losing fat. After a serious of powerful exercises, they were asked to create an action plan based on what they learned in order to successfully lose fat and keep it off. The result of this workshop was seven keys that addressed what most diet programs or weight loss systems do not: the fact that fitness starts inside. Here, then, are seven keys to permanent weight loss success that start on the inside.

 

Key #1: Be Positive

You've probably heard this one before. It's a popular cliché. In order for it to work, however, you have to move beyond a catchy statement and integrate this as part of your life. In order to truly "be positive" you must start with an understanding of the mind. Your reality is perception, and perception is influenced by your thoughts. Thoughts create reality. What you think about expands.

A good friend and client of mine was a pilot for many years. After the terrorist attacks on September 11th, he was out of work. He went through a period of extreme grief, pain, and anger. His health suffered. It wasn't the money that struck such a powerful blow. It was something else, a mistake many people made.

 

You see, my friend's reality could be summed up with this statement: "I am a pilot."

Can you see the danger in this?

He defined himself by what he did, not who he was. By losing his job, he lost his identity. In reality, he was there all along, but his ego kept getting in the way of finding his true self. He had to learn how to let go and be himself, and define who he was on his own merits, not by his actions, level of success, or how others perceive him. Many people who are overweight create the same situation. Most will create the statement, "I am fat." Of course, the desire to lose weight might exist, but if your definition of self-worth is based on the amount of fat you carry, what happens when it's gone?

If you've lived with "I am fat" for months or years, who do you expect to become when the fat is gone?

This subconscious fear of losing your identity can sabotage your process.

 

What we think about expands. If you focus on the fat you carrying, or the difficulty you have losing weight, then expect more of it. Expect more fat, and expect a difficult time losing the fact. On the other hand, if you focus on releasing the fat, on your success and the process, then this is what you will receive more of. The fat won't go away overnight. However, if you spend just one day eating healthy foods and exercising - even if it's just taking a short walk - would you consider that to be an improvement?

Could you call that a "healthy day" compared to your previous habits?

What if you decided to be, "I am healthy," and give the fat some time to let go?

 

Be positive means be realistic, and focus on the positive progress. Focus on abundance - get more of what you wish to receive, instead of thinking about what you don't want.

The Secret to Safe Weight Loss

The safe way to lose weight begins with a thorough checkup by your family physician. He can check for any health problems that might defeat a simple diet plan. He can also help you set a reasonable weight-loss goal and plan a strategy to meet that goal within a reasonable time frame.

The big problem is that we all enjoy good food. So a diet that deprives you of the joy of eating is not likely to work in the long run. Therefore, the key is to avoid overeating. Here, then, are a few suggestions to help you to be "moderate" in your eating habits.

Don't skip breakfast! "Hunger and a feeling of deprivation get the best of you," warns The New Teenage Body Book. "You'll tend to load up on food -- and calories -- late in the day."

 

1. Restrict your eating to mealtimes.
We often control ourselves relatively well when we sit down at the table. Whether at home or eating out, we have put some thought into the food on our plate and have made a conscious decision about what we will allow ourselves. It is what happens between actual meals that is often our downfall. We act without awareness or forethought, absent-mindedly picking on leftovers or items just "hanging around" - candy, potato chips, last night's unfinished bowl of popcorn, a last lonely cupcake. With little genuine memory of doing it, we have doubled or tripled our daily caloric intake and completely subverted our best intentions. Whether you eat twice a day or "three squares" stick to that, and keep your teeth firmly clenched for the rest of the time.

Drink a large glass of water before each meal. This will fill your stomach. Drinking adequate amounts of water also appears to play a role in reducing body-fat deposits. Doctors therefore recommend drinking at least eight glasses of water a day.

Don't eat and watch TV. Says Dr. Seymour Isenberg: "If you are busy watching TV . . . , you [can] begin eating like a machine."

Pray before you eat. Remember this, whether you believe in God or not, it (prayer) certainly cannot hurt. Prayer just may strengthen your resolve to eat moderately.

Eat slowly. It takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to signal the brain that it is full. Eating slowly will thus help you to "eat to satisfaction," but no more!

Find healthy alternatives to eating -- especially if you have been in the habit of eating whenever you are bored, tense, lonely, or depressed. Talk to someone you trust. Go for a walk, or exercise. Work on a hobby. Listen to music. Do something you enjoy and this may help to keep your mind off your appetite.

Weight Loss Superfecta

If you are a fan of horse racing, you are familiar with the exotic bet called the Superfecta. It requires that you pick the first four horses to cross the finish line. Depending upon the size of the field and the odds of the winning horses, the pay-off is frequently tremendous.

Approaching our weight loss efforts with a bettor's attitude, we're going to pick four sure winners in the dieting game. To improve our chances, we going to "box" our choices, meaning that they can finish in any order as long as our picks run first, second, third, and fourth.

2. Increase your activity.
Most of us who are overweight hate exercise. We always manage not to find time to perform a daily routine or join a gym. It is true that you can increase your energy expenditure during the day by such changes as using the stairs instead of the elevator, parking as far away from the store or market as possible, or walking over to a coworker's desk rather than calling him on the telephone. The problem is that these suggestions, so often voiced by the weight loss specialists, have little effect, especially in the short term. If you honestly believe that a few extra steps a day is going to make you buff, you are in big-time denial my friend.

Increasing your activity levels to the range where they will really help your weight goals is going to take genuine and regular effort. If you can't stand the thought of calisthenics in the morning, try these.

a. Don't just take the stairs, use them. If you work on the third floor of a six story building, walk up to the roof and then back down to your floor. If you have a two story home or an upstairs apartment, make sure you keep leaving things behind so you are forced to go up and down the stairs at least three or four times before you get in your car and drive off.

b. Park your car in the back 40 at the supermarket and then leave your wallet under the seat. When you reach the store, you'll have to walk all the way back to get it. When you've loaded your groceries into your trunk, push the basket all the way back to the store's front door - now you've walked the distance four times instead of just once.

c. Use your break or lunch time to walk around the block. Then convince yourself that you might have dropped something and retrace your entire trip.

d. Turn on music when you clean house or wash the dishes. Dance constantly while you try to finish your chores without breaking anything.

e. When you watch television, only put an ounce or two of water, or coffee, or tea, in your cup or glass. Get up for a refill at every commercial. During the evening, you may get up and down fifty times which will keep you limber as well as burning calories.

Some of these ideas may take so much time that you'll throw in the towel and choose an early morning exercise routine instead, knowing that then you don't have to worry about this silliness all day!

3. Think small.
We gain weight because of the types of food we eat and the amount we eat. For now, we are going to concentrate on the quantity of our intake - calories DO count.

Start thinking small at the market. Yes, the food producers give us a price break if we buy the "economy" size (they have a vested interest in keep our appetites unfettered). We can save even more by buying in bulk. At this stage in our weight loss program, we are less interested in saving money than in saving our diet. Buy the smallest available size of everything.

When you start to prepare your meal, estimate how much of each item you need, and then reduce by 25%. Use dessert instead of dinner plates. A portion of food looks much bigger when it's threatening to spill over the edges.

As you start to eat, cut your food into small pieces. Not bite-sized pieces, mind you, but more like pet food morsels or large peas. Then eat one at a time, making sure your mouth is totally empty before taking another piece.

You will find yourself feeing full (and rather bored with the whole procedure) long before your little plate is empty. The thought of a second helping may even make you nauseous.

If you are eating out, try to order a child's plate, a senior menu size, or just an appetizer. Never order a complete meal when a la carte dishes are available - the rest is just "filler" anyway.

4. Always have a pleasant diversion on hand.
The less time you spend interacting with food, the less you will eat. Set up your schedule to allow yourself as little time to eat as possible. If you have an important meeting at 1 PM, don't take time for lunch until 12:45. At 1 PM, stop and clear everything away. If you want to watch a special television show at 7 PM, don't start eating dinner until 6:45. At 7 PM, dump any uneaten food into the garbage pail and turn on your show.

If you didn't have time to finish your meal, more power to you - you're that many calories ahead. And remember that this tip must be combined with your earlier agreement not to eat between meals.

If you're home with nothing special to do, identify some fun non-eating activity and schedule that right after you start to eat so again you are forced to stop earlier than your stomach demands. Schedule yourself to start a new book, surf the Internet, read a favorite catalog, visit a neighbor, or sit down with the kids to discuss their day.

Never find yourself at "loose ends" with nothing better to do than eat. Make a list of things you enjoy so there is always something to tempt you away from the table.

Mix and match these four suggestions as you move along in your journey to slim. In any order, in any degree, in any rotation, they will help carry you across the finish line to reap your well-earned rewards.
