Weight Loss - It's NOT about the numbers - It's your Approach!

Today obesity, diabetes and heart disease runs through us at epidemic levels, Why?

The answer lies not in the thousands of different kinds of diet, weight loss and workout programs offered, the answer lies in the approach. But, no one wants to talk about that. Do you ever wonder why that is?

Over the years most of us who are out of shape and want to lose a few pounds and feel a little better about ourselves, developed many different behaviors toward exercise and food.

Do we not want to know, or could it have something to do with the doctor's and those in the fitness industry not wanting to explain the best approach to us?

Maybe they don't even know the right way themselves?

Deep down we want and need too know. Why do I say this?

 

Twenty years of managing health clubs and dealing with doctor's tells me, that if they told you this, then there may be a chance you would not need them. Sounds crazy doesn't it. But, true!

Some are good ones, but most are just barriers we have built in our minds. I guess you could also chalk it up to pure laziness.

However, the bottom line is we are going to continue down the path of destruction until someone comes up with a plan to help people deal with the reasons behind such behaviors.

No pill will do it long term, no eight minute ab's routine will concur the patterns; the only thing it will take is introspection. But, do we want to hear that? Maybe, that is just too painful to even think about right now.

Do you mean I will have to take a good long look at myself?

Maybe so. At the end of the day, you are going to have to ask yourself, "Do I deal with it now or do I deal with the consequences later? Because that's really want it comes down to. Face the truth on your terms today, or face the reality on life's terms down the road in a hospital bed.

I chose to deal with it now.

So where is the magic?

It's not in the pills or programs being fed to us today and it's also not found so much in the numbers on an exercise chart, the amount of weight you lift, or the miles on a treadmill.

Our success lies in:

•How willing are you to deal with the roots of the unwanted behaviors?

•Figuring out what truly motivates us?

•Developing a great support system for us personally?

•Figure out the emotions behind the food.

•Simplifying the workout program to fit your lifestyle.

Weight Loss - The Soft Drink Diet

 

In the early ninety's doctors were beginning to see the growing trend in American's waist lines. So for a very short period of time they came out on the offensive by promoting better foods to eat. An easy one was endorsing pasta meals. What they failed to mention was the best time to eat pasta and what other things to not eat with it. Thus, fifteen years later, you are twenty percent fatter, and more confused than ever. Pasta by itself is not necessarily the problem, but combine that with soft drinks or wine, then you have the Venus fly trap.

Remember years ago, the sticky strip you hung out in your back yard. Flies would fly by and stick to the strap. Well, that is what soft drinks do in your system. While you may be eating half way descent food groups (not to mention your portions) the sugar drinks act as the sticky fly trap. This hinders the digestive process.

If you have wine, cut down on the breads. If you have pasta's cut down on the wines. If you have soft drinks, cut back on the starchy complex foods. No matter the combination, combining pasta meals with sugary drinks is eating you up from the inside out. If you want to lose a few pounds, lose a few ounces of soft drinks in your daily diet.

Truth or Consequences - Weight Loss for good!

What if you could actively change the outcome of your life by eating better and getting daily exercise?

What if you felt better had more energy, less pain, and a better attitude toward aging?

What if you approached life with more confidence, rather than dreading the day?

The fact is you will never know ahead of time when your life will end. Life, love and logic never seem to be on the same page. You can leave this earth anytime and for any reason. How you decide to live those days before you do go is your choice. You can continue down the path you're going with achy joints, low energy levels, high stress, and poor eating habits or you can choose a different path.

 

In plain English; the longer the food stays in your system the more of a chance you have of getting fatter. The soft drinks act as barriers. In many cases when it comes to weight loss, the food combinations really get you. The biggest no- no is starchy foods with sugary foods.


The health of America is going to get worse before it gets better. Diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, heart disease-are all at epidemic levels. And for the first time in history the kids of today are projected not to live as long as there parents have. The only way for the health of America to get better is for all of us to be personally responsible, change our attitudes toward exercise, and support one another in the process.

In the "good years," more money, more marketing and more-for-me attitudes enabled us to focus on making the big bucks. It allowed us to put off worrying about healthy bodies. The accent was on NOW and not later. But the fiscal wealth we accumulated years ago is NOW being drained by our physical healthcare costs. Eventually, our bad health will consume all the extra dollars we worked so hard to earn. Some of the responsibility falls with the big corporations, insurance companies and hospital groups. But at the end of the day, the buck stops with YOU.

The reality of this situation bites; however, the solution is not to ignore it, but to encourage people to embrace it. Many of you have either given up on yourself or just flat out are living in denial. Either way the choice is still yours. The fact of the matter is there is still hope for America and there is still hope for you, too. Don't let the buck stop with you. Take care of your own life before it takes charge of you.

Why start now?

Pay me now or pay me later. I can just hear the doctors say. With life comes responsibility and with decisions comes consequences. It's your choice today to do something positive. Tomorrow it may be out of your hands. Remember the three underlying emotions that keep us from taking better care of ourselves: denial, pride, and laziness. DENIAL

Society is so concerned with extreme makeover television shows that we have been caught off guard with the silent killers: heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

Even if the outside looks good, the damage is still done inside our bodies. Over time we have made ourselves feel comfortable with certain lifestyle habits.

We overlook the long-term consequences of our behaviors. We see things going on around us, but we continue to put off exercise and eating better for another day. Out of the three, Denial is the sneakiest beast of them all.

PRIDE
Denial's brother, Pride, may not be the sneakiest, but he is the strongest personality of the boys. Having too much pride costs millions of lives every year in any arena you can imagine, especially in health and the aging process.

Why do you think New Year's resolutions don't stick? Any decision postponed is one that has not been taken seriously enough. If you have to wait to start on a program or quit a bad behavior, it is most likely wishful thinking. Yes, the goals along the way should be flexible; but once the heartfelt decision is made, there is no looking back.

When is the best time to start? RIGHT NOW! So I ask you one simple question,

Why Wait?
People wait to start on a program for many reasons: o When you are not so busy o Once the kids are back in school o After the doctor's checkup o When you don't feel good The truth is these excuses will never go away until you decide to do something about them. NOW.

We all have been at points in our lives where we got sick and tired of feeling bad, sleeping restlessly, and having life crashing in on us and our health. The bottom line is you will only change your habits and attitudes about exercise and eating when-there are no more options!

Why have I allowed myself to get into this shape?

DENIAL

Ever have any of these thoughts? Denial's brother, Pride, may not be the sneakiest, but he is the strongest personality of the boys. Having too much pride costs millions of lives every year in any arena you can imagine, especially in health and the aging process. While pride may be the strongest emotion out of the three, he always seems to lose. His ego gets the best of him and aging finally wins out in the end.

LAZINESS
"I'll start tomorrow on my exercise program." Exercise and eating right takes discipline, and planning. For some, that's too much to ask. If that's you, you may be missing out on a really wonderful healthy quality filled life. But, does that really matter to you?

Why is America the fattest nation in the world?

Laziness! It's just that simple. If you think a pill, surgery, or wishful thinking is going to replace hard work you have been HAD by the media. It takes hard consistent work. Having Lazy as a friend may cost you your life someday. Why are most countries healthier and thinner than us?

 

They are more active and more resourceful.
One out of three of you will break a bone. Half of you are on the verge of obesity and diabetes. A third of you will suffer a heart attack. Half of you will end up in a nursing home. And most of you are not living a life filled with confidence, good sleeping patterns, high energy or happiness.

Why now?

You tell me…why not now?

Do the math! Numbers do not lie. You either accept the road less traveled or you face the consequences. It's just that simple. This may resemble a scare tactic, but the bottom line is this is the reality. You either pay the price now by putting in some effort and time, or you pay the doctor bill later.

If you think for one second you are exempt, above reproach, or just relying on luck or faith, think again. Your best defense is a good offense. Why now?

Weight Loss equals behavior change - The Acceptance Factor

 

Getting to the ROOT of the matter: If the plants in your garden are not healthy looking, just trimming them back will not take care of the problem. What do the roots look like? I am no psychologist, but there is a very interesting twist you need to understand before you begin any weight loss or fitness program. To change unwanted behaviors, it's important to acknowledge your thinking toward exercise and eating. A lot of people believe they know what that thinking is, but haven't come to grips with their core beliefs. In other words, they have to get to the "root of the matter."

The truth is more Americans are overweight and out-of-shape today than ever before. Why? In order to change your attitude toward exercise and food, you have to understand the WHYs of the behavior. You are going to have to dig deep, find the root of the problem, nurture and understand it.

Your BELIEF system: The reason you have certain behaviors is based on the core beliefs of your value system. It is here--inside--where things need to be addressed. Beliefs form barriers that stop you from starting or following through on a regular exercise and eating program.

Most barriers fall into these categories of acceptance:
Accept: Your Self-Limitations and Self-Expectations Your Circumstances--Past and Present Your True Reality of Life

Limitations: Some individuals have certain limitations. They may have physical setbacks, such as heart, joint, muscular or mental problems, i.e. depression. Limitations also come from outside influences and responsibilities brought on by lifestyles, such as kids, work, and money. Acknowledging your limitations helps you develop strategies, thus empowering you instead of hindering your capabilities.

Expectations: There is nothing wrong with setting goals; however, setting expectations too high could frustrate you. Do not set of expectations so high that your obligations in life will not allow you to accomplish the goal!

Circumstances: We all know that life is not fair. Eating properly and exercising comes easier for some than for others. We can accept our circumstances without falling victim to them. There are plans that can be created in order to work around events in life.

Truth and reality of your life: A lot of times it is much easier to deny reality than to accept it. You can cloud the truth and say you believe this or that, but sooner or later in order for you to get in better shape you have to deal with the TRUTH, not the illusion!

Illusions can sink your dreams: Remember the story of the Titanic; the ship advertised "unsinkable." It was the largest ship ever built and people rushed to take the maiden voyage. Much to everyone's surprise, the Titanic did sink, but why did it sink? The captain of the Titanic saw the dangerous iceberg ahead and steered away thinking he could avoid it. What he didn't see was the enormous mass of ice under the surface.

In order to change attitudes toward exercise you have to check under the surface. It takes time, effort, and energy, and in some cases, outside professional assistance to get to the TRUTH of the matter…to see what is below, admit it is there and bring it up to the surface. If you have a hard time following through on an eating plan, chances are barriers have formed, and stop you from smooth sailing. You are resisting exercise!

Changing your unwanted behaviors toward exercise and food is like looking at an iceberg. What is really happening is below the surface not above. I call this the iceberg effect.

The A Factor - The Secret to keeping your weight loss program going!

Twenty years ago, I did not aspect to accomplish what I have in the fitness world. And I surely didn't dream about writing best selling books. However, two things I did know; first by exercising and eating better allowed me to be involved in something much greater than me. And second, I was not afraid to ask for help and support.

We live in a world filled with pride, denial and laziness. It's just that simple. Your success in weight loss, sports conditioning or general fitness comes down to one simple thing, asking for help.

Our country use to be goal oriented. People use to take pride (good pride) in the fact that they were in a process of accomplishing something. Today, most want something for nothing. If that were not the case, America would not be the fattest nation on earth and getting larger every day.

Very soon each one of you will either choose or be forced to take some personal responsibility in your health and fitness levels. Forced? Yes! The truth is, the way things look, each one of you will either face the music on your terms or some life changing circumstance is going to come your way that will force you to take a good long look at your health. Scare tactic, you bet cha!
So what do you do? You, get a medical check up if necessary and just start moving.

Chances are you eat at the same time, gobble up the same food types and in most cases, you take in roughly the same amount of food on a weekly basis? Your body gets used to eating the same types and same amounts. As in exercise, it is really important to incorporate a variety of foods in our daily eating to keep it off guard, so to speak.

The truth is while good looks are a good measurement; they are only perks in the big picture.

Next you ask for directions and support. This may be the make or break it area in your success in getting in better shape. When developing a good support system, there are important things to remember. Here are a few things to mark off your checklist when you are building personal fitness accountability.

What kind of people do you associate with?

***Toxic - Non-supportive, pessimistic, victim mentality.

***Non-Toxic - Encouraging, happy, forward thinkers. Do you consider yourself to be a prideful person?

(Is it hard for you to ask for directions?

***Asking for support is a sin of strength not weakness. When was the last time you went on a vacation?

***Rewarding yourself for hard work motivates you to push harder and stay focused. Do you have any honest and authentic people around you?

***Find a trustworthy friend to help you, with your goals Do you have anyone you admire?

***Find someone you can emulate.

Your weight loss, energy levels and general health can start changing today if only you are not afraid to ask for help. Weight Loss with NO Dieting! - The Five Mindsets for Success

Any dietary plan on the market has some portion of it that works, but the basic principle of any good eating program, no matter how sugarcoated, centers around calories IN- calories OUT. Most diets are just too unrealistic for a person's lifestyle. Plus they don't supply enough basic nutritional needs for people to stay with them. Balance is the key! Attitude is the key to keeping balance!!
Here are five mindsets to take when dealing with weight and food.

Perspectives toward food
Ask yourself, "Why do I eat?" Most will say, "I eat because I have to." Well, think about it. Do you? If you eat just because you have to, then your choices will be more for taste. If you ate with the attitude that food was fuel, then how would you eat? You may be more likely to make a quality choice. Your attitude toward food is very important!

Pattern of eating
Do you drive the same way to work every day?

Do you go to the same grocery store?

Do you hang out with the same people most of the time?

The same thing is true with your food.

Pushing your buttons
Why do you think advertisements are so powerful? They spark something inside of you and immediately you find yourself on autopilot going to the refrigerator or the next fast food joint to get something you don't need. Recognize this so you can make better choices.

Portion Control
Being aware of how much you eat at one time is very important. Take spaghetti for example-fifteen years ago the doctors came out and endorsed pasta as a healthy food. While this is true, physicians didn't explain portion control. Even though pasta may be a good food type, an extra hundred or two calories a few times a week adds up. Learn to push the plate away.

Pre-Planning
This may sound like common sense, but with our busy lifestyles, pre-planning meals in advance is far from simple. However, pre-planning is essential. For most of us all we can do to just keep up with the day's activities, much less cook in advance. It really boils down to time management. If you have good choices in the refrigerator, you will be more likely to eat that food. When healthy foods are unavailable, you will go out of your way to the pantry, pizza parlor, or fast food restaurant for immediate gratification.

In a nut shell:
In some instances what we eat, when we eat it and how much we eat is due to a physiological reaction. However, it could be both emotional and physiological. Eating right has a lot to do with how you look at food, how much you eat and what you eat. Recognize if you have eating patterns. The patterns may be lifestyle, emotional, physically related or all the above. Pre-planning meals and shopping ahead solves a lot of the poor decision making. Here are my suggestions:
1. If you have excessive eating habits, they may be emotionally related. Figure out your bad habits and counteract them.
2. Pre-plan the week, if possible. You'll make better choices if you have better choices from which to choose.
3. Food journal twice a month with times, types and amounts of food eaten.
4. Snacking throughout the day helps overeating.
5. Eat until comfortable - you will eat tomorrow.
6. Eat with your opposite hand.
7. Sit while you are eating.
