Weight Loss Timing Is Everything - Part 2

In this series of articles we're examining the timing of fitness. As we found last time, when we eat is almost as important as what we eat. In this article we're going to take a look at when we exercise, and how to get the maximum benefit from our workouts based on timing.

When we do our training may be just as important as how intensely and how long we do it.

We've all heard the popular addage 'Timing is everything'. As passe as cliches may be, we can't argue with the accuracy of this phrase. It holds true in almost every aspect of our lives - business, relationships, family and even exercise.

TALKIN' ABOUT FAT: Those who preach the superiority of morning exercise for fat-burning deserve a pat on the back by the scientific community. That's right: The theory that cardiovascular exercise on an empty stomach first thing in the morning has the greatest potential for fat loss is firmly supported by science.

However, this effect is not necessarily due (as many believe) to the low concentrations of glucose in the blood and glycogen in the muscles when we wake up in the morning. In actuality, glucose and glycogen have little to do with this morning fat-burning effect. Henriette Pilegaard, PhD, a research scientist at the prestigious Copenhagen Muscle Research Center in Denmark, states: "Blood glucose and muscle glycogen levels stay fairly constant overnight. This fact is reported in several texts including the well-known Biological Rhythms in Clinical and Laboratory Medicine."

While glucose and glycogen are tightly maintained, metabolism, on the other hand, takes a drastic swing during the night. Jaci VanHeest, PhD, professor of exercise science at the University of Connecticut (Storrs), explains: "During your nightly slumber, your muscles switch almost exclusively to fat use in order to spare glucose for the brain. At this time, insulin levels are very low and the hormone glucagon is very high." This increases the amount of fat that leaves our fat cells and travels to our muscles, where the fat is ultimately oxidized (burned).

As several research studies show, we can take advantage of this fat-burning cycle by exercising first thing in the morning before eating. Increasing the energy needs of our muscles via aerobic exercise will enhance both the 'leaking' of fat from fat cells and the 'sponging up' of fat by exercising muscles. Over time, this could lead to noticable bodyfat loss. BURN, BABY, BURN: Several studies have also discovered that this increase in fat usage by muscle continues throughout the day, even while we're just sitting around.

When we eat breakfast after exercise, less fat from the meal ends up in fat cells and more is burned by muscle. This is a great way to nullify the fat content of a meal and keep it away from our love handles, but it won't work if we eat a plate of bacon and eggs every day. The effect of greater post-meal fat-burning appears to be maintained even during later meals. In essence, we could say that morning exercise boosts our fat-burning potential for the entire day.

KICK START THE HEART: When we wake up in the morning, we're typically at our 'slowest and lowest'. That means several of our body's processes are still waking up, because our body follows a biological clock that cycles all bodily functions over a 24-hour period. Each function, such as adrenaline release, has a peak and a valley at some point during the day. When our alarm clock buzzes, our body temperature is at its lowest - as is the release of adrenaline, which is related to our slower metabolism and heart rate at this time.

Exercise first thing in the morning will get that adrenaline flowing and kick-starts our metabolism for the rest of the day. Research shows that if we get into a consistent morning exercise routine, we'll actually shift the phases of our biological clock. Before we wake up, our temperature, adrenaline release and metabolism will start to take off to prepare our body to awaken and get ready for the workout to come.

THE BOTTOM LINE: To burn the most fat, then, the best time to exercise is first thing in the morning. Before breakfast is best. (Although there are some concerns about exercise without eating, but that's a topic for another article.) One caveat: the absolute best time for you personally to exercise is anytime you can. Yes, we've been talking about morning exercise and there's lots more research we could discuss about two-a-days, evening exercise, etc. But the single most important factor for fat loss is that we simply exercise, period.

Yes, timing is important. But what if a job or family prevents us from making it before noon? Is that bad? Not at all. As we all know, any exercise is better than no exercise, no matter what the time of day. Many health club members exercise regularly after 6:00 pm each day, and that's great too. Every time we can get some exercise in, we will reap the benefits. The point of this article is to help us realize that morning exercise will help most of us more than evening exercise.

Fitness Consultant Based - One of the biggest weaknesses of the traditional commercial diet is the lack of iron that exists in its stringent and often excessively limited eating guidelines. In order to lose weight, many unsuspecting women get bamboozled into taking part in weight loss programs that cut out many of the nutrients that they need.

Weight Loss Timing Is Everything - Part 3

In this series of articles we're examining the timing of fitness. We've already looked at when to eat for minimum fat storage, and also when to exercise for maximum fat loss. The previous article was about morning exercise.

Saturated Fat - With all of the conflicting studies and fuzzy interpretation of information, it's no wonder that confusion reigns when it comes to the value and safety of low-carb diets. It seems like heated debates are raging everywhere!

This enhances most bodily functions throughout the day.

Besides the benefits of burning more fat, morning exercise has several other beneficial effects:

1) Shifts our biological clock to kick-start key physiological systems long before we wake up.

2) Increases mental acuity. Exercise causes a release of endorphins and insulin-like growth factor I(IGF-I) that increases both mental alertness and acuity. True, this benefit is apparent at any time of day we decide to exercise, but early-morning workouts will facilitate this brain-enhancing effect. That mental sharpness we feel after our workout can last for more than eight hours! If we work out later in the day, we could be 'wasting' this effect on the time we're watching television or sleeping.

3) Provides an overall good feeling. After completing a challenging bout of physical exercise, we get a 'rush' and a feeling of accomplishment that stays with us for the entire day.

4) Puts us in a 'healthy' mindset that enhances our body awareness throughout the day.

5) Ensures workout consistency. Studies show that people who work out in the morning are more likely to consistently stick with their exercise program and diet.

PRIME THE PUMP:

The exercise timing tip in this article is not for everyone, and also is not for the faint of heart. However, if we really want to prime the pump and accelerate our fat loss efforts, this tip is something we should all at least consider. As we all know, raising our metabolic rate is one of the keys to fat loss. Raising our metabolic rate burns calories and gives us energy. One of the biggest bonuses to getting that regular workout is that our metabolic rate remains elevated even after we're done exercising. Research shows that resistance training boosts metabolism for hours after the workout.

University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, researchers showed that intense weight training boosted metabolism after the workout. Scientists estimate metabolism by measuring oxygen consumption. Exercise increases post-exercise metabolism by increasing muscle temperature, stimulating chemicals called uncoupling proteins that increase calorie burning, and disrupting normal cell functions (cell water, electrolytes and minerals). Elevated post-exercise metabolism can make an important contribution to weight control.

Different doctors and researchers have come up with different results as to how long our metabolism stays elevated after resistance training. Because we all have different body types and different genetics, the answer will be slightly different for each of us. However, it's safe to say that the vast majority of us will experience a higher metabolic rate for at least four hours after a good workout. TIMING TIP OF THE WEEK: That was a big build-up to our timing tip for today. So, without further ado.....

For maximum fat loss, consider doing two-a-day workouts. Once in the morning and again sometime after lunch. Yes, it will take a little more effort. Yes, it will take a little more time. But the rewards will be tremendous. Each time you exercise, you burn calories. Two-a-days will obviously double that result. Just as important, if we time those two-a-day workouts so we're doing one in the morning and another after lunch, we will increase our metabolic rate all day long. That will give us more energy and force our body to burn more calories throughout the day.

The first workout will prime the pump for the day, giving us all the benefits listed above. About the time our metabolism starts to return to normal, the second workout will again raise our metabolic rate.....putting us on 'afterburner' and smokin' those calories for the rest of the day.

Can't get back to the gym for a second round of exercise? How about walking on your lunch hour? How about walking home from work? Or how about mowing the lawn when you get home? As we've said over and over again, some exercise is better than no exercise, so be creative when coming up with ideas for the second 'workout' of the day.

As we've discovered, timing is everything. Although it may not be for everyone, two-a-day exercise will blast our metabolism and fat-loss efforts into the stratosphere. To get the most 'burn' from this tip, just be sure to space those workouts four or more hours apart!

How to Make Sleep Your Weight Loss Buddy

My friend, Gail, has been a restless sleeper since childhood. "It's rare that I get a goodnight's sleep," she confided in me several years ago. Her weight has been a problem as well, spiraling upwards of 60 lbs within the past 20 years. Like most of us, her exercise and diet plans begin with enthusiasm but fizzle out within the first month. "Just too tired to keep them going" is her excuse. It wasn't until her doctor referred her to the Sleep Specialist that things began to change. Within 6 months, she lost 25 lbs. She began exercising and now she feels much more optimistic about her future. "I'll get down to where I want to be," she said. "But the great thing is I can sleep like a baby at night."

Gail's situation points to a distinct connection between sleep and weight.

Recently, sleep deprivation has been identified as one of the major problems of our internet culture. Not coincidentally, obesity (despite the many diets that are around) is at its highest level. The connection between sleep deprivation and weight gain is no longer in the realm of conjecture. Several studies show a direct correlation between sleep and weight.

Research shows that sleep directly affects hunger. At the New York Obesity Research Center of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, scientists have identified a direct correlation between the amount of sleep you get and your body's secretion of hormones related to satiation and hunger. Leptin is the hormone that is released when your body feels satiated and full. It's the hormone that makes you push your plate away from you at the dinner table. Ghrelin is the hormone that is secreted when your body needs nourishment; it's the hormone that makes you say "Feed me! I want more!" While leptin suppresses appetite, ghrelin stimulates it. Lack of sleep decreases the body's production of leptin by 18% and increases the body's production of ghrelin by 15%.

In essence, sleep deprivation puts the body in starvation mode, stimulating the cells to ask for more food. The result is you eat more. Does feeling hungry at 3 am sound familiar?

How then can you enlist sleep to be one of your weight loss allies?

First of all, make sure that you are on a healthy eating plan. Having the best sleep every night and the worst diet in the world at the same time will not make you lose weight. Make sure that your daily food intake includes 25-30% protein, 45-55% complex carbohydrates, 15-20% essential fatty acids.

Secondly, make sure you are on an effective exercise program 4-5 times a week. The best workout includes both weight training and aerobics. Exercise PLUS protein is the most effective way to sculpt your body. Now--we can talk sleep. Just having enough sleep will not make you lose weight, but it will surely help you stick to your weight loss plans. Here are some suggestions for enhancing your sleep experience.

1.Limit your consumption of alcohol and caffeine especially in the evening. Alcohol will give you unnecessary calories; so eliminating it entirely while you are trying to lose weight might not be a bad idea. Caffeine (especially from green tea) taken during the day can enhance your metabolism and burn fat. But caffeine in the evening can bring about a restless night.

2.Develop a personal sense of sleep hygiene. This means cultivating a regular wake and sleep schedule so that you can program your body to a routine. Find a sleep ritual that works best for you. For me, it's reading in bed. For Gail, it's listening to a sleep enhancing CD. Find a ritual that helps your body understand that you are ready for sleep.

3.Don't go to bed hungry. While this does not mean that you should have a heavy snack at bedtime, it does suggest that a light snack, rich in sleep-inducing amino acid tryptophan, can help. Warm low-fat milk is best. You can add a few( no more than 2-3) lean slices of lean turkey( also rich in tryptophan) if you wish.

4.Exercise at least 3 hours before bedtime. Physical activity contributes to the body's need for sleep. But exercising too close to bedtime can actually prevent sleep because exercise raises the body's metabolism and alertness level.

5.Take a warm bath an hour before bedtime. Your body temperature will slowly drop after you get out of the tub making you feel tired.

6.Create a Bed Sanctuary. If you want to sleep well, make your bedroom sleep- conducive. Get the best mattress you can afford, the most comfortable pillows, the best blackout shades. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Eliminate noise by using earplugs.

7.Eliminate distractions like a humming TV, computer or phone.

8.Keep your days active. Resist the temptation of nap so that your body will be ready for a restful sleep at night.

Try Flax Seed Oil Weight Loss

What is better than a diet that is convenient?

Years and years of research have been dedicated to the subject of weight loss. Some of the obvious findings are that routine exercise and a healthy, well balanced diet in moderation can lead to weight loss. However, many people don't have time to obsess about having a healthy diet or consistently workout so they are also looking for a more convenient method to lose weight. Convenience often means finding the quickest method that they can in order to experience weight loss, whether they have reservations about its effectiveness or not.

This is where some of the years of research have spawned worthless products such as machines that are designed to give you the perfect stomach or pills that claim to decrease your waste size overnight. So if you have tried these products in the past, consider something more natural and try flax seed oil weight loss.

Flax seed oil does your body good

We want to familiarize you with flax seed oil. It is extracted from the flax seed grain and has been used for centuries. The strange thing about flax seed oil weight loss is that it occurs because of the presence of two fatty acids within the oil known as Linolenic (Omega 3) and Linoleic (Omega 6). It may be weird to ponder the possibilities of fatty acid helping to promote weight loss but when these two substances combine, they become key in the process of calorie burning. This is because they combine to become prostaglandins, which help with weight loss and also provide other benefits such as moderating cholesterol, body temperature, the immune system, brain functions, and the cardiovascular system.

Get enough Omega 3 and feel the difference

The problem with most diets is that they don't get enough Omega 3 in their diet along with the Omega 6 to produce a lot of prostaglandins. The ratio should be one Omega 3 for every two Omega 6, but instead is usually one for every twenty in typical diets. Make sure that you are getting enough Omega 3, add flax seed oil to your diet and notice the change in your body and brain.

The Low Down on the Best Green Tea Supplement for Weight Loss

When it comes down to improving your health a good idea is to do some research. Do you have trouble seeking for the right supplement for weight loss? Green tea is the most advisable supplement for you to loss your weight. The best green tea can be found online. This product is a natural product that has been known to enhance people's lives in some form of capacity.

Green Tea has now become a popular substitute to the usual orange juice provided on many lists. Green tea, besides being a typical beverage around the world, provides numerous health benefits as well as its weight loss properties. The best green tea has lots of advantages; there are no additives or preservatives in this product. The best green tea might be able to help boost your immune system and also enhance other capacities in your life Many have discovered that green tea is a powerful weapon to fight fats and obesity. It also helped to aid weight loss by increasing the metabolic rate, causing those who use it to experience greater calorie burn.

Green tea is the first and only, all natural fat burning product that can selectively increase fat oxidation without jitters and mood swings, increased heart rate, heart palpitations, and other similar side effects associated with Ma-Haung, (ephedrine). This makes Green Tea perfect for individuals wishing to remove stimulants from their diets.

Yup, believe it or not, more and more often you'll find green tea included in the compilations of many of the more popular weight loss supplements today. Many would say it's definitely helpful, but not earth-shatteringly effective. It's no "magic pill" I guess you could say. Proper diet and an effective exercise program will be the key to wringing the most out of green tea.

Green tea becomes an active ingredient in many weight loss products. When health benefit varieties of green tea are listed, weight loss is not usually first on the list. As research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, "Consumption of green tea produced thermogenesis and increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation" in humans. Green tea, as an active ingredient used in many of the top weight loss products when weight loss products claim they contain natural ingredients, green tea is nearly always in the list.

Supplement makers are eager to add up green tea to their weight loss products because there are numerous benefits we can get from green tea. Green Tea drinkers for more than ten years showed lower body fat percentages rather than those who don't drink tea regularly. . Drinking tea is one of the great life choices--a natural calorie-free (without the addition of milk or sugar) and can help satisfy your body's thirst for the daily fluids it needs. Support a healthy diet and exercise program with tea. Whether you're counting carbohydrates, calories or miles on the treadmill, you can reward yourself with a cup of tea, whether it's hot or iced, it's a delicious and totally guilt-free pleasure!

To top it all off, it certainly appears that green tea is an effective good health-promoting supplement and a good weight loss supplement as well. It's one of the few natural supplements that have some decent clinical proof validating its claims. Well worth trying, if you've got a good diet and exercise program under way.

Choosing Weight Loss Supplements Wisely

It really chaps my hide whenever I see those commercials on TV with a woman MD-wanna-be hawking the latest diet pill. These "play-doctors" are usually wearing white lab coats, like they're on the way to perform surgery and just thought they'd take time out of their busy schedule to tell you about this "latest medical breakthrough".

Don't be fooled. The idea is to make it appear as if this woman (or man, I've seen them, too) is an actual doctor telling you about this latest prescription medicine to solve your weight problem. They even have the nerve to sell it to you in a bottle that looks just like one of the prescriptions you get from your local pharmacy.

With obesity and all its related health problems becoming more and more common in the general population, people are becoming desperate to try a "magic pill" that will help them lose weight. As a result, there is a lot of harm you can do to yourself if you don't

choose your weight loss supplements wisely. While many health and fitness experts will tell you flat out not to ever use any supplements...ever...research has shown that some can be used with success under the right conditions.

1.Are you under a doctor's care

for high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, depression or any other serious health problem? Taking any of these types of supplements can be very dangerous. Consult your doctor and get your other health problems under control before using any weight loss supplements.

2.Are doctors involved in the design and manufacture of the supplement?

By that, I mean, do they put together the combinations and formulas for the supplements? If so, what are their credentials? If you see that a doctor (or group of doctors) has been involved in the design and production of an herbal remedy for a health problem, you have to understand that their professional reputation is on the line. Many of them have spent decades in medical schools and in clinical environments, practicing medicine. No one who has invested that much time and energy on their medical career is going to sacrifice their reputation for something they are not absolutely sure is going to work.

3.Read the label and research, research, research the ingredients. Make sure you know what you're taking and realize that the FDA guidelines for herbal supplements do not require standardized amounts. In some cases, you only need a trace amount of the herb in order to put the name on the label so look for the standardized claim on the bottle. That can also give you a clue as to whether the price is right on a certain herbal compound. If it's really cheap...or free... there's usually a reason why...most likely, it's because there's very little of the active ingredient in the pill.

4.Look for the word "chelated" and "amino-acid-bound" which means that the minerals are absorbed by your body better and more effectively than the simple forms manufactured by other vitamin-mineral products.

5.Realize that there is no such thing as a "magic weight loss pill". You must follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly in order for these herbs to work. Most good, quality weight loss supplements will enhance your weight loss efforts by increasing your metabolism and suppressing your appetite while you eat those good healthy veggies and take that 30 minute walk everyday.

The definition of "supplement" is "to increase, extend, or improve something by adding something to it." So, the best weight loss supplements are not meant to replace, but supplement, a healthy lifestyle.

Eunice Coughlin is the founder of http://www.healthy-living-for-moms.com. She has successfully used weight loss supplements, along with a healthy diet and exercise program, to lose 30 pounds and keep it off since 2002.

Selecting the Right Diet Pills for Weight Loss

More and more people are turning to the diet pill for their weight loss program. After all, why go through all the strenuous activities of exercising when you can just take a pill. With the introduction of diet pills to promote weight loss, more and more people are turning to this form of weight loss. Most advertisements claim that their product can easily melt away fats and cellulites. Who needs to tone those abs and biceps with a disciplined exercise program when a diet pill can do it for you?

Many bodybuilders and fitness experts swear that the absolute best time to work out for fat loss is first thing in the morning before breakfast because it enhances the fat-burning process. Morning exercise not only appears to benefit fat utilization by the body, but it also may be advantageous for several other reasons.

It is estimated that 60% of the American population are considered obese. The weight loss and diet pill industry are reaping millions of dollars in the United States alone. Now, the questions are: is there any truth regarding the manufacturers' claims that these diet pills can ultimately promote weight loss. Are they effective in helping people lose weight? Moreover, if that is the case, do these pills help those people maintain their ideal weight and curb any fat accumulation in the body?

In reality, there are diet pills that can really make a person lose those extra pounds. There are diet pills that contain certain substances that have been scientifically proven effective. These diet pills are effective in increasing the metabolism of the body, thereby, initiating weight loss. In addition, these diet pills contain certain substances that suppress one's appetite. However, with so many diet pills saturating the market today, trying to find the best and most effective diet pill can be very tedious. With that in mind, here are some things to consider when selecting a diet pill that is effective and safe.

· Ability to boost metabolism

In choosing diet pills that will effectively promote weight loss, it is best to look for pills that have the ingredients that will enhance your body's metabolism, or the ability of the body to burn excess fats. Choose those diet pills that contain alpha lipoic acid, green tea extracts, and "L-Canitine" because these ingredients had been clinically proven effective in promoting weight loss through increased metabolic rate.

· Appetite suppressant

Find diet pills that effectively suppress your appetite. This does not necessarily mean that you will skip meals but you will not feel as hungry and therefore less likely to eat between meals. Obesity usually happens to people who are fond of in-between meals, which actually initiates excessive calorie intake.

· Calorie stopper

Because obesity is usually due to excess intake of calories in the body, which is more than the recommended amount, it is best to choose diet pills that have the special ingredients that will curb the entry of calories into the body. These substances are known as "phaseolus vulgaris." This is known to create an enzyme that will efficiently control any excess calories in the body. The enzyme responsible for this wonderful job is known as "alpha-amylase."

· Metabolic enhancers

It is best to choose diet pills that have the so-called "lipotropic elements" that are effective in eliminating fats from the body. It functions like a sweeper that effectively sweeps excess fats outside the body. These lipotropic elements are found in vitamin C, chitosan, alpha lipoic acid, and green tea extracts.

· Water retention

Effective diet pills are those that contain diuretics. These elements avert the retention of water in the body during the weight loss regimen. All of these factors are, indeed, clinically proven and effective in losing weight. Nonetheless, keep in mind that diet pills alone are not sufficient to provide optimum weight loss. An exercise program should still be a part of your weight loss program.

With an exercise program and the right diet pills, you are definitely on your way to a healthier and slimmer you.
