Home Delivery Service for Convenience and Weight Loss

Most of us have busy lives nowadays, and shopping and cooking may be low on the list. We are more inclined to just grab a bite to eat while going to and from work or kid's activities - an excellent way to pack on the pounds, especially when this becomes a way of life and is coupled with a demanding job that allows little or no time for exercise!

There are various home delivery services available to deal with exactly that problem.

For some of us, in fact, the problem isn't sticking to a diet - the problem is finding the time to shop for the right ingredients to cook diet meals. That can be quite a challenge, and even if we start out okay, eventually many of us fall into bad habits - such as substitution and snacking.

They do the shopping and cooking for you, and make sure that the meal they send are perfectly balanced in terms of one of the current popular diets. All you do is order your weekly meals, and they come to your door - three meals and two snacks, in fact. The next day, they come to pick up the insulating container from your last day's meals, and drop off the next one.

Of course, this is a little more expensive than shopping and cooking for yourself. On the other hand, the cost compares quite favorably with that of buying most of your meals at a restaurant, so when you think of it in those terms, it's not very daunting. And you stand to gain a lot in terms of time, convenience, and your ability to stick to the diet.

In fact, it is this final factor - your ability to stick to the diet, and likelihood that you will do so - that is most impressive with regard to this plan. By cooking and delivering your food to you, this plan allows you to avoid three of the most common pitfalls that dieters face - shopping, cooking, and feeling deprived. Even if you have time to grocery shop, it may be a good idea to forgo this activity when you are trying to lose weight. Supermarkets depend on people making impulse purchases; that's how they make most of their profit, believe it or not.

This means that they are attractively laid out, in such a way that they entice you to try featured products. If you must shop, at least don't shop hungry - that can be fatal to your weight loss plan! On the other hand, if you can avoid shopping for food at all for a week or two, so much the better!

Cooking is also a huge pitfall for those wishing to lose weight by following a modified or calorie reduced eating plan. For a start, many if not most cooks like to taste food while they are preparing it. It may not feel like you're eating anything much, but it all adds up. Also, if you are preparing food for others in your family - people not trying to lose weight - the temptation can be too much for many of us. Add to this the fact that you will inevitably be cooking right before mealtime, so you'll be hungry - all in all, it can be a recipe for disaster.

Not to mention the fact that if you're cooking diet foods for yourself, you may be prone to making mistakes or tempted to make substitutions. Diet meals that people cook at home are not as precise in terms of calories or nutrients as those prepared by professionals. And if you cook at home, and there is food left in the pot, many of us will be tempted to finish that up, too! All these lapses may seem small, but they add up and can jeopardize your whole weight loss plan.

Having your meals delivered means that you can avoid the kitchen altogether while you are trying to lose weight, and that's probably for the best. It also means that the meals will be made professionally, displayed attractively, and taste good! In fact, for some people, this transforms the diet meal into something special, something that you look forward too. That is, perhaps, the best reason to employ one of these meal services for a week or two - if you're happy with the food you're getting, you'll be satisfied and less tempted to stray from it!

Historical Approaches to Weight Loss and Healthy Eating

Here are a few interesting facts:

Today, we have made nutrition a science; we think that our experts know the secrets to healthy eating. A much wider variety of healthy foods are available to us today than ever before. However, in modern society, more of us have weight problems and become ill or even die from conditions related to being overweight than ever before!

Maybe it's just possible that we have something to learn from the way that people ate in the past - throughout much of human history, in fact. One thing goes without saying, and is probably the most important factor - in the past, food was more natural. While it may be true that people ate more fat and even more calories, they acquired them from food that was close to its natural state, and therefore better for health.

But here's something else - something that may surprise you. People in most ancient societies - and right through the Middle Ages and Renaissance - did not follow the advice that most nutritionists would give today. They hardly ate any breakfast at all, though we are often told that breakfast is the 'most important meal'. In fact, they were likely to eat only one large meal a day - or two at the most, in which case one would be larger than the other. And here's another thing that would make modern nutritionists shake their heads in despair - quite a lot of the time, it seems, that one big meal was eaten rather late in the day - often after the sun went down and the day's work was done!

As time went on, some farming cultures varied this basic plan somewhat, and had their main meal in the middle of the day. They would then have a light supper - rather like our lunch - late in the evening. In fact, there are people in some European cultures today who eat exactly like this to this day.

Today, breakfast is sacrosanct, but it actually was not even invented until the seventeenth century. At that time, the idea of breakfast was popularized by the British royal family - and their 'breakfast' consisted of several courses, including meat, salads, and even dessert. In fact, the royals and aristocrats were the 'deviants' all along. They didn't eat like most people did - they increased the amount and frequency of their meals, and ended up with much of the health and weight problems that we have today!

By contrast, the peasants' meals seemed to be, for the most part, just right - as long as there wasn't a drought or famine in the area, that is. Of course, part of it might have been the simple food and hard labor, but evidence suggests that people in bygone times had very few weight problems, despite (or maybe because of?) their tendency to eat most of their calories at one meal, which was often an evening meal, at that! Should we follow their lead? It goes against conventional wisdom, but it seems worth thinking about. If nothing else, we should appreciate the fact that this type of eating has been around a lot longer than modern diets and eating plans, and seems to have been successful, for the most part. So if you're not a breakfast person, don't despair - chances are you weren't bred to be!

Weight Loss Surgery - A Last-Ditch Option that Saves Lives

We hear about people having weight loss surgery - having their 'stomach stapled', and so on - with a kind of horrified fascination. What could drive someone to do a thing like that? For the vast majority of people, weight loss surgery is not in the books - if your weight problem is mild to moderate, you are much better off controlling it through diet and exercise rather than resorting to surgery.

This is, of course, the direct opposite of what we hear nowadays. We are told never to skip breakfast, and that numerous smaller meals are better than fewer large ones. According to traditional societies, though, that's just not true. People in ancient Greece and Rome would eat very little in the morning - a small piece of bread, maybe, or a fig or two. They would work throughout the day, eating little or nothing. Then, when work was done for the day, they would sit down to a great meal. What it consisted of would vary according to how well-off the people were, and the precise region they lived in - but for everyone, the evening meal would be comprised of most of their daily calories. They would go to bed on a full stomach, digest during the night, and be energized - and have little need to eat - next morning.

A small percentage of people, however, have already 'tried everything' and found that their bodies hold onto the weight despite their best efforts. And the problem of obesity goes far beyond the aesthetic - being morbidly obese can be nothing short of deadly. It heightens your chances of having a heart attack or other type of cardiac disease. It also raises your chances of contracting adult onset diabetes. Both of those conditions can be deadly - and they often are. For that reason, if you are very overweight and have literally 'tried everything' to lose weight, you may want to talk to your doctor about weight loss surgery.

This is not to be confused with cosmetic surgery such as a tummy tuck or liposuction, which physically removes fat from your body so that you look better. Weight loss surgery is designed to 'make' you lower your food and calorie intake. There are two basic types: one type of weight loss surgery makes the stomach cavity smaller. This means that you feel full faster, and that your stomach can't hold the amount of food that it used to. The other type of weight loss surgery interferes with the absorption of food after it is eaten. During digestion, most of the absorption of fat and calories takes place in the small intestine. If there's no absorption, the food doesn't make you gain weight. Of course, this also means that you don't benefit from the nutrients in the food.

But if part of the small intestine is surgically bypassed, then less fat and calories are absorbed no matter how much food you eat. These sound like major surgical procedures, and in their own way, they are. However, they no longer need to involve a lot of scarring and a lengthy hospital stay. Some weight loss surgery can now be done through a laparoscopy - a tiny incision through which surgical instruments are introduced and used. Because this means less actual cutting, the recovery time is a lot shorter, too.

If you have ever struggle to lose weight, the thought of weight loss surgery may seem tempting to you. However, most doctors won't even consider doing weight loss surgery unless you fit their set of criteria - you must be very overweight (what is medically termed as 'morbidly obese'), not just slightly overweight. There must be a medical reason for doing the surgery - for example, if your weight is becoming an overriding health issue by causing or contributing to diabetes or heart disease. Finally, you must have a willingness to change your lifestyle and habits.

This last item may surprise you, if you had been thinking of weight loss surgery as a way to avoid having to change your lifestyle and habits! No such luck. To a certain degree, just having the surgery will automatically make you change certain habits, especially if you and your doctor opt for shrinking the stomach cavity. On the other hand, just having the procedure means that you have to be careful about what you eat. For example, because the stomach is now smaller than it used to be, you will have to limit your intake of liquids, especially carbonated liquids. You will have to make sure that the food you do eat is of high quality, because you have to get all the nutrients your body requires from a decreased quantity of food.

Finally, you will also have to start exercising to keep you metabolism going, because eating less food over a long period of time could cause your metabolism to decrease, putting you back at square one. In short, weight loss surgery can be a very helpful tool, but it is not a 'final solution' to your weight problem. Having the surgery indicates that you are committed to your weight loss, and that you are willing to implement the lifestyle changes that go along with it.

A New Diet Pill for Weight Loss and Better Health

Quite understandably - and quite rightly, in fact - diet pills used to have a bad reputation. It's easy to see why - the diet pills of the sixties, seventies and eighties were barbiturates - street name 'speed'. That's what they did - they sped you up, increasing energy to an often frenetic level while cutting your appetite. An overdose could be fatal, and even a mild overuse of these diet pills could keep you 'going' for days and days - hardly the effect anyone was going for! But yes, they did make people lose weight, sometimes quite a lot of weight. All too often, though, any benefit that patients got from their weight loss was more than counterbalanced by other health problems that the diet pills themselves brought about.

The new generation of diet pills is much different. Nowadays, people are more likely to take 'natural' diet pills that are make from herbal preparations, and these are safer, for the most part, but not nearly as effective as the diet pills of the past. Of course, there is (and probably always will be) a market for them, because people love the idea of a quick fix - a pill to make you lose weight!

One new diet pill is called "Acomplia" (generic name 'rimonabant'). It works by blocking the brain's hunger receptors, so as a result, you feel less hungry or don't realize that you are hungry. Depending on your precise behavior that caused you to gain weight in the first place, this may or may not work for you. Some of us eat too much because we make poor food choices in response to hunger. Others, however, engage in emotional eating - eating when we're not even hungry at all - for other emotional or psychological reasons.

The diet pill may or may not do much for your individual diet program. Studies indicate, however, that this diet pill does help you lose weight to a certain extent. In a European study, the subjects who took Acomplia lost twenty pounds as opposed to only 8 in a control group who received a placebo or 'dummy' pill. This was a one-year study that included 1,500 people, all of whom had weight to lose.

The manufacturers of this pill expected that it would have a positive effect on weight loss. They - and the researchers - were surprised to find that it had another benefit as well.

This diet pill proved effective in lowering 'bad' cholesterol (triglycerides) by 7%, and even more significantly, it raised 'good' cholesterol (HDL) by 27%. This means that this pill, independent of its weight loss benefits, it also an effective means of improving your cholesterol profile and lowering your risk of heart disease and cardiovascular disease. Some of this change in cholesterol level may have been due to the fact that Acomplia does facilitate weight loss, and weight loss generally does improve one's cholesterol profile. However, it does seem as though it would do so even if no substantial weight loss is sustained.

Interestingly, this pill is also effective for other addictive behaviors, such as smoking. It's not known why - as far as we know, its physical effects are limited to the elimination of reduction of hunger. It seems as though there might be link between these two compulsive behaviors - overeating and smoking - though precisely what that link is is open to speculation at present Acomplia is not yet available to the pubic, but it will be by next year. Ask your doctor about it if you think it would be of benefit to you, and do some internet research. So far, it seems very promising, and the side effects are virtually non-existent. Time will tell, however, whether any concerns regarding this product come up - it's still in the clinical trial stages.

The decision to rely entirely on a pill for weight loss is usually a misguided one. Essentially, you have to do the work - you have to change your eating, and start exercising - and there's no real substitute for that. That having been said, however, it does seem as though this pill is an effective tool you can use to help you on your way. Ask your doctor about Acomplia, particularly if your cholesterol profile could use a bit of improvement!

Reward Yourself for Weight Loss Successes

Whether you have a little or a lot of weight to lose, you will benefit greatly by some simple behavior modification measures, such as rewarding yourself every time you meet one of your smaller goals. Losing weight is a big challenge for most of us. It requires a lot of hard work to change what might be extremely longstanding habits that we might have acquired. The exercise that is involved in losing a great deal of weight is also very hard work. You need something to keep you going for the long haul. For many people, rewarding themselves at regular intervals throughout the process works very well.

Some diet plans incorporate a 'reward meal' once a week or once every ten days. If you are following a restricted diet, this might be the way to go. It's hard to go without you favorite foods on a daily basis. If you know that all restrictions will be lifted at regular times, it might be easier to go without bread or chips or ice cream the rest of the time. This practice is somewhat controversial, however. It depends on some of the psychological reasons behind your particular weight problem. For instance, if eating is like an addiction for you, having an unrestricted meal might be an invitation to binge.

You could liken it to an alcoholic, who is unable to have 'just one' beer without triggering the problematic behavior once again. Of course, people with a food addiction have a harder road ahead of them, because unlike alcohol, you can't just 'give up' eating altogether. If your diet plan includes a reward meal, try it once and see how it works for you. Does it make it easier for you to stick to the diet the rest of the time, or is it that much harder to get back on track afterwards? If so, you might want to rethink you reward system.

Most experts agree that non-food rewards are best for people trying to lose weight. It should be something that is meaningful to you, and that represents the 'new you' in some way.

This is very different from a lot of other diets and weight loss programs, which tend to target a particular type of food and blame it for everyone's weight problems. For people who subscribe to the low -carb approach to weigh loss, simple carbohydrates are the 'enemy'. For fitness guru Susan Powter, fat is the enemy. The problem is that all of these diets lose their appeal after you have been on several different ones, and they all tell you different things. In fact, as a society, we almost expect a new approach to eating to come along every year or so, just to confuse us!

For many women, that might involve buying clothes or a cosmetic or jewelry item that you would not otherwise have bought. You can think of it this way: by losing weight, even if there is an initial outlay of cash, you are also saving yourself money in the long run. Buying and preparing healthy food costs less than restaurant meals and junk food, so that's one way in which you will save. Then, by being healthier, you will be more productive, and you will be productive later in life. Most importantly, perhaps, you will also be healthier, and save on medical costs throughout your life. In light of all this, you are justified in spending a little more on a clothing or luxury item once in a while, to reward yourself for working hard to lose weight.

On the other hand, not all of us - not even all women - are motivated by clothing, cosmetics and jewelry. Your reward can be any non-food item that you choose - a new novel, for example, or theater or concert tickets. When you reach your weight loss goals, you might even want to splurge on a holiday - but try to make it an active holiday, rather than a cruise or resort stay where you have little to do but lie in the sun and eat!

It's a great idea to plan a big reward once you have met your weight loss goals, but it may be even more important to plan smaller rewards more frequently. Make your goals realistic and incremental, and reward yourself whenever you meet one successfully. If you make it easier to feel as though you are 'winning' in the weight loss game, you will likely continue to be successful. This is a type of psychology that seems to work well for everyone, adults and children alike. So, for example, you might want to reward yourself for exercising three times in a given week, or you might want to attach the reward to having lost a certain amount of weight - but make it a small amount, like a pound or two. Keep in mind that you can reach weight 'plateaus' even when you are following the plan, so it may be better to attach rewards to behavior. By doing so, you are effectively retraining your body and mind so that you can enjoy better health and eating habits in the future.

Weight Loss - The Group Approach

People are social beings, so for many of us, it doesn't make sense to try and lose weight alone. Many people do better in a group program such as Weight Watchers. In fact, Weight Watchers has been one of the most successful weight loss programs around for many years now. It operates on a simple, yet ingenious formula that makes weight loss simple for the majority of people.

The first element is the grading of foods according to points. The key is that it's a simple system. Different foods are given a different number of points based on their fat and calorie content, and you are given a daily 'allowance' of points depending on how active you are and how much weight you want or need to lose. This means that you don't need to stick to pre-planned menus, you don't need to buy special foods or supplements, and you can eat the foods you love. There are no forbidden foods.

At Weight Watchers, though, they just let the numbers speak for themselves without judging the foods. Some foods are simply higher in calories, so if you want to eat them, you have to eat less in order to lose or maintain your weight. It's very simple. So, for example, if you want to plan to have dessert, you can cut back on some of your other food for the day, or just exercise a bit more.

Another thing that makes Weight Watchers so successful is the group approach. Everyone comes to meetings together, a little bit like AA or any other support group. There, everyone is weighed in public, though there is no scolding or shaming, Psychologically, though, that really does make people try harder to lose weight. People know that if they slip up, everyone will know. Everyone will probably be very understanding, but by the same token, everyone is likely to applaud you when you do stick to the plan and lose weight.

Weight Watchers is the original, but there are many other weight loss programs that are based on this group approach. It's very helpful to many of us, much as exercising with a friend can be much easier than doing it on your own. Basically, eating is a very social thing, and one of the reasons why people fail to lose weight may be that they feel the need to participate in the social aspect of eating.

Weight loss groups deal with this need very constructively. You have the opportunity, on a regular basis, to be with a large group of people who are in the same boat, so to speak. Weight Watchers also has qualified counselors on hand to help you with any trouble you might be having with your weight loss plan. That kind of support is definitely well worth the very reasonable fee you pay for joining.

Weight Watchers is a diet, not a way of life - you set goals, and when you meet them, you're 'finished', so to speak. However, one of the aims of this program is to teach you certain skills that you will be able to keep for life.

These include a sense of portion control - because we are often served huge portions of food in restaurants, for example, some of us seem to have lost touch with what a reasonable portion of food looks like, or what it feels like to eat it. This, in and of itself, leads to a lot of weight problems. Weight Watchers and other similar weight loss programs help you reinstate the sense of portion control by limiting the amount of food you eat at a single sitting down to a more reasonable size.
