You name it and it's on a weight loss infomercial. In fact, weight loss programs (separate from fitness programs and equipment, which may result in weight loss but are sold as ways to improve your appearance) account for more than 50% of all revenue generated in today's infomercials.
One of them was the well known and extremely successful Fen-Phen diet, which was a combination of two herbs known to doctors and other professionals in the industry as herbal speed. While still legal at the time, the pills killed the appetite completely, created a euphoric state in the user and led to many problems including heart attacks which led the FDA to ban the main substances from use in the USA.
Weight loss infomercials are so powerful and so successful that you have to be careful which products you choose to use. As with anything else in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There really is no magic pill or substance that is going to let you sit on the couch and eat huge quantities of bad foods and make you lose weight without paying some kind of terrible price. How To Maintain Your Weight Loss
Once you have started losing weight, it is crucial to think of how to maintain that weight loss in the days ahead. It may seem hard to believe, but taking the weight off is the easy part. Maintaining weight loss for good is where the real challenge lies. If you are like me, you have tried countless diets only to gain the weight back. People lose lots of weight on diets everyday, but 95% of them gain it back because they have focused only on the weight loss. They follow the diet until they get to a particular number on the scale and then shortly after, they go back to the old lifestyle that made them overweight in the first place. Of course, over time the weight comes right back. The truth is, almost everyone can lose weight but only 5% keep it off. These are the Weight Loss Registry's figures, not mine. The WLR followed highly successful dieters and came up with seven reasons why people were able to keep the weight off.
Here are the seven reasons the dieters were successful.
1. The dieters accepted failure and kept on trying.

Weight Loss Drugs - Well, most people think swimming is effective to tone muscles and lose fat and that is why the swimming pools everywhere are always packed in the evenings and weekends. Well, I must first declare that I am not anti-swimming.
Sometimes I am not always in a perfect situation with the healthiest choices, but I make do with what is there and I stick to the plan.
When I compare my own weight loss success to the list above, I would say I learned how to maintain weight loss due to the following: I do the best I can with what I have available. If I make a not so healthy choice, I don't beat myself up for it. I eat YUMMY and whole foods. Using the finest ingredients makes the most delicious meals and has helped me stick to Living Well. If I wanted to indulge, I would make it from scratch using the healthiest ingredients possible. To me, indulging does not mean eating junk.
I use a tape measure to keep tabs on my weight and occasionally weigh myself. I really struggle with exercising regularly and I have NEVER exercised for one hour a day consistently. I will do heavy housework and other activities around the house to get my heart rate up and I try different forms of exercise all the time because I get bored easily. I think it is vital to get moving every day, somehow, and it doesn't always mean you have to be in an aerobics class or on some sort of machine to get your heart rate up.
I eat organic whole foods and healthy oils. I am not sold on the idea that low fat and high carb is the way to go. High fat is not the answer either, but healthy oils are not the enemy. The rights oils will actually speed up the metabolism. I eat only 3 meals a day and rarely snack. I do better when I don't snack or graze on food all day. BUT, you may be different. You have to do what works best for you and your unique body.
This is the MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL I think of the health I have now and my future health EVERYDAY. I really want to enjoy my older years and I want to be healthy. I don't want to sit in a rocking chair, talking about all my symptoms and the things that ail me when I am in my golden years. The Weight Loss Registry tips and my maintenance tips are not the only path for everyone, but instead are some ideas you can use to come up with your own way to keep the weight off once you have lost it.
Ultimately, I think it is crucial to focus on your health when changing over to a healthy lifestyle. So many people are in a hurry to lose weight. They spend their entire lives putting on the weight, losing the weight temporarily on diets and just want to get rid of it as fast as possible not taking in consideration their state of health. I know you have heard this many times before but if you don't have your health, you don't have much. Being thin will mean nothing to you if you compromise your health along the way.
Even if you are losing weight slowly, good for you! The idea here is to take off the weight and keep it off for good. Even just a couple of pounds a month adds up over the course of a year. Obesity is an illness which is harder to treat than many cancers. Doctors and patients have been looking for a pharmacological approach coupled with proper nutrition and regular exercises to cope with chronic obesity. One of the most popular drug for that purpose is phentermine. Once widely praised as a "wonder drug", phentermine still boasts as the most commonly prescribed appetite suppressant in the US, one of the reason being its cheaper price tag compared to other similar drugs. Phentermine enhances the levels of several neurotransmitters including dopamine and norepinephrine affecting blood flow, heartbeat, and reactivity to stress. This makes people eat more rapidly but to eat less. Another appetite suppressant, fenfluramine, acts on a different neurotransmitter, serotonin. Serotonin is involved in controlling mood and reduces the feelings of agitation associated with hunger.
Phentermine first became available for consumers in the late 50s, and later modified as Phentermine Hydrochloride (HCl) in the 70s. Phentermine became popular again in the 90s in the form of 'cocktail', Fen-Phen. In 1992, Dr. Weintraub from University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry published a paper with a study that Fen-Phen works more effectively than diet or exercise in chronic obese cases. Fen-Phen became an overnight sensation. While phentermine and fenfluramine are both approved by FDA separately, their mixture, 'Fen-Phen' never was, and their prescription by doctors was considered "off-label".
Dexfen-Phen is another combination including phentermine. In this case, the other ingredient is dexfenfluramine or redux. Dexfenfluramine was also used as an appetite suppressant. Dexfen-Phen again followed the suit, and became widely popular.
In 1997, Mayo Clinic reported 24 cases of heart valve disease in the patients who had taken fen-phen cocktail. Further findings suggested fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine may be related to heart valve disorder, and accordingly, FDA issued a public health advisory and requested drug manufacturers to voluntarily withdraw fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine.
Unlike fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine, phentermine was not taken off the market. Phentermine is again used in various cocktail forms. It was necessary since phentermine's appetite suppressing effect decreases rather rapidly over time. One of the new cocktail involving phentermine is "Phen- Pro", phentermine plus prozac, a popular antidepressants. Phen-pro cocktail makes phentermine work longer and has no significant psychological effect. Even though phentermine cocktail works better in controlling appetite, you should always discuss with your doctor about the possible side effects. Also, it's always a good idea to eat right and exercise regularly however great the drug seems to work.

God is the most awesome force that we have. Every time we are off track, we just need to ask ourselves one question. Why am I disconnecting from Him?
I have previously written about a favorite author of mine, Florence Scovel Shinn. She has written many books, one of which is called The Game of Life and How to Play It. This is the book that helped me change my thoughts when I was very ill. I read it over and over and over again to help me create a different pattern of thought. It was an absolute gift to me and I would encourage you to get it. In addition, I just recently got her book entitled The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn. This is a compilation of four of her books. I use these books in my daily devotion to stay connected to God. The messages are so incredibly powerful, yet simple. Staying connected to God in every thought that we have is the answer. Let go and let God. Surrender!
I am going to use part of her book to illustrate some points:
"All life is high vibration. You combine with what you notice, or you combine with what you vibrate to. If you are vibrating injustice and resentment you meet it on your pathway, at every step. You will certainly think it is hard world and that everybody is against you. Hermes Trismegistus said several thousands of years ago, "To change your mood you must change your vibrations." I make it even stronger: I say, to change your world, you must change your vibrations. Turn on a different current in your battery of thought, and you'll see the difference immediately. Suppose you have been resenting people and saying you are not appreciated. Make the statement: "God appreciates me, therefore, man appreciates me, I appreciate myself.
The law of laws, is to do unto others as you would be done by; for, whatever you send out comes back and what you do to others will be done to you. So, the woman who refrains from criticism, saves herself from criticism. Critical people are always being criticized. They also have rheumatism, for acid thoughts produce acid in the blood, which causes pain in the joints. Be undisturbed by a situation and it falls away."
When we react, when we judge, when we resist, we are disconnecting from God. All of these emotions are fear-based. As Wayne Dyer says, "If you knew who walked beside you at all times, you would have no fear." Recently, I had an e-mail conversation with a friend and it went back and forth several times. This friend had a lot of anger in his words. Instead of reacting, I remained calm and it was absolutely amazing. My last e-mail to him, I wrote "Let's give this to God." He then responded with more anger, but I was not moved; I had complete peace. A short time later, this friend e-mailed me and was very kind.
I use this to illustrate that it is about always remaining connected to our Source. I have to remind myself as well as I can get off track very easily. Remember, 7 year old Tami who wants to stick her tongue out and say, "Neener, neener, neener. You're not the boss of me." Sometimes she still comes out, but it's my ego talking. This is what Wayne Dyer says of EGO--Edging God Out. Look at where you need to connect to Him and just plug the connection back in. Then feel the power light up your world. Your power source is back and illuminating UNCONDITIONAL LOVE!

Weight Loss Made Easy
There are low fat, low carb, low calorie, and even liquid diets. There are dozens of pills and plans promising the world with quick weight loss. I am sure, while you're reading this article, someone is dreaming up another "quick fix" solution to the ever growing obesity epidemic. I would like to tell you an eye opening weight loss related story about Jill, a person I consulted with. Jill, a 35 year old single women in Los Angeles, had a first date last Saturday night with whom she called "Mr. Perfect." Because the dinner date was at 8:00 pm, she told her girlfriends she needed to start getting ready at 6:00 pm. Jill wanted to look the best she could, therefore, her outfit and accessories were planned days in advance. She picked out a dress she wore only once, last year, which generated rave reviews.
As Jill anxiously dressed for her big night with "Mr. Perfect," she shockingly couldn't squeeze into her tight dress. Instant panic! It didn't fit, and her night was ruined. She felt fat, unattractive, and downright disgusted with herself. Jill told me she wanted to cancel the date and hide. Does any of this sound familiar?
I am sharing this story with you because this is exactly how the weight loss, diet roller coaster can begin. After feeling horrible about herself, a distraught Jill frantically began searching for the quickest weight loss solution possible. Jill said "whatever it takes, I need this off now!"
The next day Jill was bombarded with dozens of different complicated, and confusing solutions. Pills, exercise, low carb, liquid, South Beach, Beverly Hills, and the Grapefruit Diet. She called me, in an extremely emotional state, to ask which diet was best.
After carefully explaining that weight loss can be very easy as long as she stepped back and understood and followed a basic, rational system I began to share with her. It is time to stop making weight loss so complicated! It can be extremely easy if you understand and follow the simple system I shared with Jill. The system, I am referring to, has been outlined below for your benefit also.
1. Determine your maintenance calories by writing down every thing you eat for 7 days. This includes even the little piece of cheese or chocolate, or the sugar and cream you might have put into your coffee. Make sure you don't alter your diet in any way throughout these 7 days. This is considered your typical 7 day diet recall.
2. Use a calorie counting book and account for each and every calorie you took in. Figure out the calorie content at the end of each day.
3. Add up the calories for all 7 days to get the grand total.
4. Take the grand total and divide by 7. This will equal your daily maintenance calories - the amount of calories required to maintain your present bodyweight. (You have to assume you neither gained nor lost weight while recording these numbers.) This method will take into account individual metabolism, and physical activity levels.
5. To lose 1 pound of fat per week, you must find a way to decrease your caloric intake by 500 calories per day for seven straight days. Consistency does count. If you wish to increase your physical activity by 250 more calories per day, all you need to do is cut 250 calories each day from your maintenance number identified above. Take a close look at your 7 day recall, and determine which foods you can either cut down on, or eliminate. Look at portion size, high fat foods, sugar based beverages, and desserts.
Once again, there must be consistent, day after day, effort in order to lose weight. There are no quick, secret magic pills.
Follow these simple steps, and you will lose body fat when ever you want. There will never be a need again for the "quick fix" flavor of the month diet. Therefore, if you understand this simple principle, you will never be confused about what works and what doesn't , resulting in complete control over your weight.
