When embarking on a weight loss program people will almost always focus on just one or two of the seven necessary components needed to achieve their goal. In order to maximize ones weight loss results they must combine all seven components. I like to call these components the "Seven Secrets of Weight Loss" do to the fact that they are almost never explained in simplistic terms to the average person making them somewhat of a secret. Below you will find a brief description of the seven secrets that will help you achieve maximum weight loss. Each of the seven secrets represents the seven necessary components needed to achieve maximum weight loss.

Secret #2 (Caloric Intake) A decrease in caloric intake and an increase in daily activity will create a natural caloric deficit which is the foundation of all weight loss.

Secret #1 (Proper Mind Set) A proper mind set is an essential part of any successful weight loss program. You must first ask yourself why losing this weight is important to you. Write it down so you can read it aloud to yourself every day. Make a commitment to yourself to follow through with what you start. Create a schedule for your meals and workouts. By scheduling something it will become reality. Without a proper mind set, a true commitment to succeed, and plan of action it will be very unlikely that you will reach your goal.

Secret #3 (Food Quality) Quality food choices are usually low in calories and loaded with a variety of vitamins, nutrients, anti-oxidants, and fiber which are the building blocks of a healthy lean body. Some quality foods choices include lean proteins (egg whites, chicken/turkey breast, fish, etc.), quality complex carbohydrates (sweet potato, oatmeal, brown rice, bran cereal, etc.), vegetables (broccoli, green beans, asparagus, spinach, etc.) and Omega 3 fatty acid sources (flax seed oil, canola oil, salmon, tuna, walnuts, etc.).

Secret #4 (Water Consumption) Consume at least 8-12 glasses of water throughout the day or a ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight. Water is the most important nutrient in the human body and has many benefits involving weight loss. Proper hydration will increase the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream which in return will increase the body's fat burning ability and overall energy output.

Secret #5 (Meal Frequency) Eat five to six smaller meals spread approximately three hours apart over the course of a day. Your body only has the ability to process so much food at one time. By eating smaller meals every three hours you will never overload your body with fuel (food) yet there will always be fuel (food) to burn do to adequate frequency. Meal frequency will also regulate blood sugar levels which will ease hunger.

Secret #6 (Resistance Training) Muscle is the primary part of your body that burns calories from fat stores. Resistance training will improve the conditioning of your muscles resulting in an increase in metabolism. Metabolism is often defined as the rate at which your body burns energy (including fat stores) to sustain itself. By improving the condition of your muscles you will burn more calories 24 hours a day, seven days a week and help in the reduction of body fat. It is recommended that some type of resistance training be performed at least 3 times per week focusing on all of the major muscle groups.

Secret #7 (Aerobic Training) Aerobic training perform at intensity of 65% to 80% (Target Heart Rate Zone) of ones maximum heart rate will use fat stores as a primary source of fuel. Aerobics training is a great way to increase your daily calorie expenditure while using fat stores as a primary source of fuel. Perform aerobic activity 25 to 45 minutes 3 to 6 times per week. Aerobic exercise for fat loss is most effective when performed first thing in the morning before a meal or immediately after resistance training.

Target Heart Rate Zone 220 - Age x .65 = BPM (Beats Per Minute) 65% 220 - Age x .80 = BPM (Beats Per Minute) 80% (Perform aerobic exercise at a heart rate between 65% and 80%)

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System recently published their findings from a 21 state study with over 112,000 participants on how weight loss methods affect dieter's success. Each participant was placed into one of four categories based on the weight control method they used.

1. Increasing physical activity
2. Eating fewer calories
3. Combination of fewer calories with exercise
4. None (not trying to lose weight)

Yes, we are wrong. The entire weight loss industry is wrong!
It all reminds me of a slogan from a few years ago, "Simply Weight Loss." It represented a return to diet basics. And that's when it hit me, a return to diet basics is what is wrong.

Dieting is Wrong
You're too heavy and you need to lose weight. The extra pounds pushing you above your ideal weight, resulted from a chronic state of positive energy balance...eating more calories (energy) than the body needs.

This is usually followed by the question, "Why doesn't my body just get rid of the extra energy?" I totally agree. Just get rid of all that extra energy, send it on it's way. Unfortunately, the laws of thermodynamics are what mess things up.

The big stinker involves the whole idea that you can't create or destroy energy. It's constant. Since you can't simply destroy energy, you have no choice but to use the extra energy (packed into calories) or store it.

So, how does this make dieting wrong?

Dieting only works in theory. In theory, dieting, which is synonymous with calorie restriction, causes total body energy to decrease in hopes of creating an energy deficit.

To make up for this deficit, the body will tap into energy stores to cover immediate needs. So, in theory, dieting causes weight loss. Is this what occurs in dieters? Yes and no.

The Best Method for Using Stored Energy
Dieting, a.k.a. calorie restriction, slows down the resting metabolic rate, throwing the body into a state of energy conservation. This is not conducive of weight loss but instead is perfect for gaining weight. Those dieters that do lose weight and keep it off, practice my concept of Slow & Low.

Now what? Exercise.
What is the best method for using the extra energy we didn't use in the past? Exercise. Start an exercise program first, one that centers on muscle tone and strength, then use dieting on an as needed basis to lower total body energy.

Designing a Weight Loss Specific Program, Part 1

 

Many individuals try to achieve weight loss with an overly simplified approach…"burn more calories than I take in and I will lose weight." Even though this is still emphasized throughout the fitness industry and in our educational system, a truly effective weight loss program needs to be more specific. In this three-part article I am going to discuss some of the specifics of a weight loss program.

In Part One of this article I am going to discuss resistance training and choosing the appropriate number of repetitions, number of sets, and rest intervals.

In Part Two I will further discuss resistance training and exercise selection, grouping, and training frequency. Part Three will touch on cardiovascular training and its role in a weight loss program.

Resistance Training
Resistance training needs to be a staple in every weight loss program. However, the program variables need to be manipulated such that the program is conducive to weight loss. For instance, performing 5 sets of 5 repetitions will result in a different training effect than performing 2 sets of 15 repetitions. The former is more likely to result in improved muscular strength, while the latter is more likely to result in muscular endurance improvements.

How many repetitions for weight loss?
Typically for weight loss programs I prescribe repetitions in the range of 8-15. Fewer repetitions tend to favor strength gains and compromise the hormonal response, specifically growth hormone, I would like to achieve because the intensity is too high. Performing more than 15 repetitions results in intensity too low to elicit the hormonal response I am looking for.

How many sets?
The number of sets to be used in a resistance training program designed for weight loss is inversely related to the number of repetitions being performed. The lower the number of reps, the higher the number of sets and vise versa. Typically, for weight loss programs I keep the number of sets in the range of 2-4, emphasizing compound exercises (ie. performing more sets, 4, for compound movements and fewer sets, 2, for single joint movements). Studies have shown that multiple sets are more effective than single sets in producing a growth hormone response. Therefore, multiple sets are needed, again, in order to achieve a hormonal response that is conducive to body compositional changes.

Rest Intervals
One of the most overlooked variables is the amount of rest taken between sets. Rest intervals, like every other variable, need to be specific to the goal of the resistance training program and is influenced by the number of sets and repetitions being performed. Fewer reps, more rest, and vise versa. For weight loss purposes, rest intervals should be in the range of 30-60 seconds. Rest intervals too short or too long will compromise the training effect.

I hope this begins to shed some light on the need for specifics when designing a program for weight loss. Of course, these variables may need to be manipulated on a case-by-case basis in order to account for individual differences, such as training age, work capacity, etc.

Psst, got milk? Calcium may be the newest weight-loss secret. A new study provides more evidence that calcium can fight body fat and help keep your weight under control.

Researchers found that adolescent girls who consumed more calcium weighed less and had less body fat than girls who consumed the same amount of calories from other sources. Previous studies have shown that a higher calcium intake can block body fat production in adults and preschool children, but this is one of the first studies to show that it might have the same effect in body-conscious preteen and teenage girls.

The study

The study, presented this week at the Experimental Biology 2003 meeting in San Diego, involved an ethnically mixed group of 321 girls aged nine to 14.

Each of the girls recorded everything she ate and drank, along with any calcium or vitamin supplements, for three days. Researchers also measured the girls' physical activity, weight, and amount of body fat just above the hipbone -- a measure of abdominal fat.

Not surprisingly, they found that the girls who consumed more total calories and exercised less weighed more and had more body fat. But when researchers compared girls with similar calorie intake, physical activity level, and size, they found that the girls who consumed more calcium on average weighed less.

Researchers say most of the calcium in the girls' diet came from dairy sources, and it didn't take much to make a difference in their body fat and weight. The study found an increase of one serving of dairy, such as a cup of milk or thumb-sized piece of cheese containing about 300 mg of calcium, was associated with about half an inch less abdominal fat and nearly 2 pounds in lower weight.

But researcher Rachel Novotny, PhD, RD, says the findings shouldn't be interpreted as an excuse to add more cheese and other calcium-rich dairy products to your diet in the hopes of stimulating weight loss.

"It doesn't mean that just eating more dairy can help you lose weight," says Novotny, professor and chair of the department of human nutrition, food and animal sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Calories are still the bottom line

His findings, published in this week's Journal of the "Calories are still the bottom line," Novotny tells WebMD. "Does the composition of calories matter? Yes, having more of them come from calcium-rich foods is associated with lower weight and lower body fat."

In light of the current obesity epidemic, Novotny says these findings might provide a new way to help set up children for a healthy body weight later in life. Although reducing overall calorie intake and increasing physical activity are the most effective means to promote weight loss and reduce body fat in people of any age, she says a relatively small change in calcium intake might also lower body fat.

"What perhaps is important about this is that they are in a period of rapid growth, and because of that growth there is an opportunity to modify their body composition," says Novotny. "It sets the stage for future body composition." High body fat and obesity is associated with many health risks such as high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.

Calcium's fat-fighting power is not fully understood

The exact mechanism behind calcium's fat-fighting power is not fully understood, but previous research in animals suggests that high levels of calcium in the bloodstream slow down fat production and help shift the body's focus from accumulating fat to breaking it down.

Registered dietitian Althea Zanecosky says the old adage, "like mother, like daughter" usually doesn't apply to weight control methods, but this study shows that it can.

"As a dietitian, I'm really thrilled because here's a food we're trying to get them to eat for other reasons, and now here's this added bonus," says Zanecosky, who is also spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

"Preventing bone disease coming years down road might not be an incentive for girls," Zanecosky tells WebMD. "But for those concerned about their weight, this is one more reason for them to drink their milk because it may also have this beneficial effect on their weight."

Sneak extra doses of calcium-rich foods into your children's diet

Zanecosky says it's not hard for parents to sneak extra doses of calcium-rich foods into their children's diet. As a mother of two adolescent daughters herself, she finds the following "tricks" especially effective in her own children:

Grab a decaffeinated cappuccino with your teenager as an after-school snack. Send yogurt along with their lunch, as a snack, or have it for breakfast (no-fat or low-fat versions of many yogurts are also available for weight-conscious kids).

Whip up fruit smoothies with skim milk or yogurt. Sprinkle reduced-fat grated cheeses on salads. Incorporate low-fat shredded cheese blends into dinner entrees, such as Mexican cheeses on fajitas and tacos, Italian cheeses on pasta, etc.

If your child doesn't like plain milk, offer flavored milks such as chocolate or strawberry.
"This is one potentially trendy diet that's healthy. You can control fat and get strong bones at same time. I don't know of any other diets can make that claim," says Zanecosky. "You can't lose anything but pounds."

Understanding Weight Loss

 

A pound of fat represents approximately 3500 calories of stored energy. In order to lose a pound of fat, you have to use 3500 more calories than you consume. Although this seems like a simple formula remember that your body is a thinking organism designed to protect itself.

If you were to try to reduce your intake by the entire 3500 calories in one day, your body would register some type of alarm and think that there is a state of emergency. Immediately your metabolism would slow down and no weight loss would be achieved.

It's better to spread your weight loss out over a period of a week, so that you aim to reduce your caloric intake by 3500 to 7000 calories per week, resulting in weight loss of one to two pounds per week. It's generally not recommended to try to lose more than two pounds in a week. Attempting to do so may cause health risks, and on top of this you're unlikely to be successful.

In the example of attempting to lose two pounds per week, you can use a basic method of calorie counting to help you accomplish your goal. To do so, you need to figure out how many calories a person of your age, sex, and weight usually needs in a day, subtract 500 from that amount, and follow a diet that provides you with that many calories.

For example, if you would ordinarily need 3000 calories in a day, you would follow a 2500-calorie a day diet. Next, figure out how much exercise a person of your weight would need to do to burn 500 calories per day, and engage in an exercise plan that will help you achieve your goal.

The result is simple: 500 fewer calories consumed and 500 more calories expended equals a 1000 calorie per day deficit, which, over the course of a week adds up to 7000 calories, or two pounds. Although individual results may vary, the bottom line is if your body is consuming fewer calories than it's expending, then weight will be lost.

Weight Training For Weight Loss

Weight training combines building muscle tone and working the cardiovascular system. Weight training tones your muscles and raises your metabolism, which helps your body burn more calories not only when exercising, but also while you sleep. Many women worry that weight training will make them muscular and bulky like a man but you must keep in mind that men and women have different muscular structures, therefore weight training will not develop big muscles on women, just toned muscles.

Not only is weight training a routine that makes you strong, it is a routine that trains the body to build muscle instead of fat, takes stress off key areas of the body such as the lower back, making you less prone to injury in that area.

Since high blood pressure or hypertension is a big concern with those who are obese, it is welcome news that weight training decreases your resting blood pressure.Weight training has also been proven to increase your blood level of HDL cholesterol, which is commonly referred to as "good cholesterol. Overall health is definitely improved through weight training.

It is best to start with a plan, which may be joining a gym where you can regularly go to get a full workout, or purchasing a home workout system that uses resistance instead of weights but produces similar results. You must assess what type of person you are, and make the appropriate decision from there.

If you like the idea of going out somewhere daily for your workout, welcoming the change of scenery and benefiting from the comradery of others who are also training, then you may want to opt for a gym membership. However, if you know you are the type that enjoys working alone and will not work out unless its in the convenience of your home where you do not have to get dressed and go out, then the home gym system option is for you. Only you can make this assessment of yourself.
