You focus on that heirloom with such profound love because you want it to last so you can pass it on to family members.


Now, let's look at your health. Is it irreplaceable?

I asked a friend this same question, and she said her health is priceless. Well, what exactly does priceless mean in the context of health. Before we do this, let's look at an heirloom which is considered priceless to many. Thus, it's irreplaceable. You take care of that heirloom. You place it in a space that is protected. The intent is this heirloom stays in wonderful condition in order to preserve its meaning to all the family who will care for it for years to come. We look at that heirloom and say this is a part of us and it has incredible value.


Well if our health is priceless, then shouldn't we be treating it in the same respect as our heirloom? Shouldn't we be preserving our health and loving our bodies so that our family gets the benefit of what meaning we serve in their lives.


Yet, how many of us actually do this on a conscious level?

Most of the population doesn't take the time nor invest in themselves monetarily choosing those things that will affirm nurturing, love and protection for its most valuable heirloom - YOU! Giving to ourselves each and everyday and investing in those things that affirm health is the most valuable thing you can give your family. Which would you rather give your family? A necklace passed down from your great grandmother or a healthy, vibrant YOU filled with love for yourself? Which one has more value to pass down from generation to generation?


I can speak about this as my mother died in 1987. I have my mother's wedding rings that I will pass on, and they do have great meaning. What greater gift is there to pass on? I spent many years in struggle not understanding how to love myself. It wasn't just from my mother; it was from my father as well. Neither one of them knew how to love themselves.


Guess what? Now, I have learned how to do this, and am showing my daughter, Lindsay, what this looks like. She, in turn, is finding incredible value from this as she is understanding and taking action in how to do this for herself. As a 21 year old intelligent, beautiful woman, she does the following:

Gastric Bypass Surgery And Weight Loss

Gastric bypass (also called bariatric surgery) closes off a large portion of the stomach, leaving only a pouch the size of an egg. Gastric bypass works by restricting food intake. Patients feel full after eating small amounts of food. Fewer calories are eaten and weight is lost. Gastric bypass patients typically lose 70% of their excess weight, most of it in the first year after surgery. Gastric bypass surgery combines the creation of a small stomach pouch to restrict food intake and construction of bypasses of the duodenum and other segments of the small intestine to cause malabsorption (decreased ability to absorb nutrients from food). There are two types of gastric bypass surgery: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RGB) and extensive gastric bypass (biliopancreatic diversion).


Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the most common gastric bypass procedure performed in the U.S. First, a small stomach pouch is created by stapling part of the stomach together or by vertical banding. This limits how much food you can eat. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the duodenum as well as the first portion of the jejunum. This causes reduced calorie and nutrient absorption. This procedure can now be done with a laparoscope (a thin telescope-like instrument for viewing inside the abdomen) in some people. This involves using small incisions and generally has a more rapid recovery time.


In extensive gastric bypass - a more complicated gastric bypass operation - the lower portion of the stomach is removed. The small pouch that remains is connected directly to the final segment of the small intestine, thus completely bypassing both the duodenum and jejunum. Although this procedure successfully promotes weight loss, it is not as widely used because of the high risk for nutritional deficiencies.


Gastric bypass operations that cause malabsorption and restrict food intake produce more weight loss than restriction operations, which only decrease food intake. People who have bypass operations generally lose two-thirds of their excess weight within 2 years. There are risks associated with gastric bypass surgery. People who undergo this procedure are at risk for: pouch stretching (stomach gets bigger overtime, stretching back to its normal size before surgery), band erosion (the band closing off part of the stomach disintegrates), breakdown of staple lines (band and staples fall apart, reversing procedure), leakage of stomach contents into the abdomen (this is dangerous because the acid can eat away other organs), nutritional deficiencies causing health problems.


Gastric bypass operations also may cause "dumping syndrome," whereby stomach contents move too rapidly through the small intestine. Symptoms include nausea, weakness, sweating, faintness, and, occasionally, diarrhea after eating, as well as the inability to eat sweets without becoming extremely weak. Gallstones can occur in response to rapid weight loss. They can be dissolved with medication taken after the surgery.


The limited absorption of vitamin B12 and iron can cause anemia. The lack of calcium absorption can cause osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. People who undergo this procedure are required to take nutritional supplements that usually prevent these deficiencies. The more extensive the bypass operation, the greater is the risk for complications and nutritional deficiencies. People who undergo extensive bypasses of the normal digestive process require not only close monitoring, but also lifelong use of special foods and medications.


Low carbs, the bottom line: you may lose weight quicker on a low-carbohydrate diet than on a diet to cut calories. However, don't expect to lose as much weight as diet books say you will and remember that the risks of heart disease, stroke, cancer, and osteoporosis for people on low-carb diets have not been tested. There's plenty of research that shows the way to go is moderation in eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies, beans, whole grains, seafood, poultry, and low-fat dairy products.

Recent Study Reveals Surprising Truth About Low Fat Weight Loss Diets


A recent study revealed surprising facts surrounding low-fat weight loss diets and their believed benefits relating to heart disease and cancer. A study completed by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) and Stanford University determined that a low-fat weight loss diet, in itself, is not sufficient in greatly reducing the risk of cancer and/or heart disease in women. Research officials determined that a decrease in saturated and trans fats may offer more convincing results.


The study noted that women who took part in a low-fat weight loss diet experienced a 9% decrease in the development of breast cancer. In addition, no appreciable changes were confirmed in the development of heart disease. Approximately 49,000 females, from ages 50 to 79, took part in what is recognized as the America's largest long-term study of a low-fat weight loss diet. The study was carried out over a term of eight years, during which time the experts planned to test the belief that low-fat weight loss diets were beneficial in reducing the risk of cancer or heart disease.


Of the approximate 49,000 women subjects, 40% were instructed to maintain a low-fat weight loss diet, which required them to reduce their fat intake down to 20% of their total calorie consumption. They were also instructed to eat fruits and vegetables on five or more occasions during the day, in addition to six servings of grain. The other 60% of women participants were named as the comparison group and were told to maintain their current eating habits.


During the study, Women's Health Initiative researches noted that some of the low-fat weight loss diet candidates failed to meet their required 20% fat intake. A recent news report, which was released from Stanford University, detailed the facts that researchers believed women who wish to maintain a healthy lifestyle may wish to consider a well-balanced diet that is low in both saturated and trans fats while, at the same time, remained a diet rich in vegetables and fiber. According to the release, this type of diet would take the place of one that is directed solely toward the goal of low-fat food consumption.


"Just switching to low-fat foods is not likely to yield much health benefit in most women," commented Marcia Stefanick, PhD, professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center and chair of the Women's Health Initiative steering committee. "Rather than trying to eat low-fat, women should focus on reducing saturated fats and trans fats."
