Ah - I remember so well when my weight was at its all time high and I decided to visit an amusement park. One with lots of rides that went up and down, much like my weight always seemed to do. Needless to say, it was difficult trying to fit into the seat of that wild ride. And not only that ride. When it came to sex, there was more huffing and puffing in trying to achieve a favorable position for the ride than in the act itself. It was a point when weight gain had taken control of my life - my entire life, even my sex life.

 

There were times when I stood half-naked (I was always afraid to stand totally naked) in front of a mirror thinking, "I can't even find my breasts - much less the other important part." Oh - but there is good news when it comes to sex and weight gain. The er....bottom line is that losing just a few of those extra pounds will allow an individual to get much closer to their lover. Self-esteem will also receive a boost - as will sex. Great sex with increased intensity and closeness - just one more fabulous reason to ditch those extra pounds.

 

Weight Loss Tips: -

When choosing a diet plan, keep weight loss expectations real. A 2-pound per week weight loss is fantastic. It might not seem like much, but that's over 100 pounds in a year.

 

- Incorporate foods into your daily diet that are closest to their natural state as they contain less fat and calories than processed foods.

- Be sure to enjoy two healthy snacks each day.

- Enlist the help of family and friends when possible.

- Find an activity that you enjoy doing. If you don't like the activity, odds are, you aren't going to stick with it.

 

- Relaxation is equally important as exercise. Be sure to allow time in your busy day for YOU. Whether it's reading a book, knitting, or watching television, it's important to unwind.

- Take a daily multi-vitamin to ensure you're getting all you need.

Get Into the Closet after Weight Loss Surgery

 

After you've had a gastric bypass surgery, you'll lose a lot of weight in a very short period of time. This is a double-edged sword in the sense that you rejoice over the fact that you are losing weight so rapidly, yet in addition, you face challenges of wearing clothing that properly fits your ever-shrinking body. There's a way you can manage this bitter/sweet dilemma. It becomes very frustrating as you rummage though your clothes trying to find items that fit you. In my own personal experience, I was changing clothing sizes every three (3) weeks, and I can attest to this dilemma of trying on clothing that was either too loose or still too snug to wear.

 

The time it took me to actually "find" the outfit of the day ended up being so time-consuming and frustrating, I had to figure out a way to speed up the process of simply clothing myself, easing the frustrations of scattered clothing everywhere, and eliminating the sour attitude I had about clothes when I should have been thrilled to suffer from such a "happy problem" of finding smaller-sized clothing to wear.

 

The SOLUTION was to GET INTO THE CLOSET (and dresser drawers) and organize my clothing by SIZE. This was a new concept! There are several ways we've always organized our closets and drawers: Perhaps we've done it by color, by season, by fabric, by climate, by event, by holiday, by clothing type, by style, etc. etc. But very FEW people have ever organized their clothing by SIZE. The advantage of organizing your closet and drawers by size is that you can easily locate them and making them readily handy during those trying-on adventures. Then as you move out of one size and progress to the next smaller size, it's an easier transition to find that next smaller size that fits you far better than that slightly larger size that probably drapes on you in an unflattering way.

 

This eliminates the need to try on the jeans over and over again because you can't remember how they fit your body. And if you're not sure what size the garment represents, then pin a different note on them such as, "Maybe in one more month (specify month)." Figure out what note system works best for you. Consider arranging a drawer or bin labeled "Almost Me." Once you place items in this spot, be sure to try these clothes on every two weeks.... Few things are more painful than having clothing in there and you waited too long to try them on and they are now too large to wear! I can recall some clothing I looked forward to wearing but never was able to wear them simply because by the time I checked on them, they were too large for me! Had I checked them out at a set time, such as every-other Thursday or something like that, I wouldn't have missed my window of opportunity to wear them.

 

As soon as you are out of that larger size, PACK THEM AWAY and give them to someone else, sell them, or donate them to a charity/thrift store. There is no need to hang onto those clothes! Really! I had somebody ask me, after I lost 80 pounds, "when will you be convinced that you're not going to ever wear those clothes again? After losing 100 pounds? After losing 150 pounds? When?" This person made me realize that I needed to act on trust that I was indeed losing weight and I would not be gaining that type of weight back again. What a happy day it was to pack up all of those clothes and part with the memories that went along with them!

 

Realize and accept the fact that you will go through many changes in your clothing size as you lose your weight after a bariatric surgery. If you started out wearing a size 3X and you've lost 30-50 pounds, you should not be wearing those same size 3X clothes; for if you are, you are, you are not complimenting the fact that you are losing weight and your appearance may look too droopy or saggy. Plan a time when you can begin this project of getting into the closet (and drawers). It's going to be work, but very well-worth it to you in the long run. Think SIZE only. Nothing else. Then each day when you search for something to wear, the right size of the day will be at your fingertips and not all scattered throughout various places to annoy you.

 

Losing weight so rapidly is changing your life and it should also change the way your closets are organized. You have different needs now... not just in how you eat, but how you locate what you're going to wear for the day. Make is easier and a pleasant experience for you. Size matters!

The Inward vs. the Outward Influences after Weight Loss

 

Why does losing weight have to be so stressful? Why is it so hard?

There are many factors. It would be presumptuous to say that losing weight was easy. It certainly isn't! A person who has to lose then pounds finds it just a hard and frustrating as the person who has to lose over a hundred pounds. Although the number of pounds appear as a vast difference between the ten-pound loser and the hundred-pound loser, the truth is the same frustrations are experienced.

 

Be sure when you are organizing your closet that you take into account those clothing labels which may not reflect a "true size." Keep in mind that when you buy or borrow used clothing, some articles may have shrunken, or perhaps people had the article altered to better fit their exact body type. When this happens, simply pin a little tag on the clothing that states what size YOU believe it really is according to how it fits your body. For example, a second-hand pair of jeans may have a "size 14" tag on them, but because of shrinkage, they will fit you as if they are a "size 10." Pin a little tag that says "size 10" on them and organize among your other size-10-clothing for easy reference.

 

I propose that we recognize the two major influences we have to "learn to discern" if we want to achieve our weight-loss goals.

To me, the two major influences are the "outward" influences and the "inward" influences. An outward influence is anything out in the touchable, three-dimensional real world like food, scales, mirrors, people, clothes, and so forth. The inward influences are things that go on in your heart, your desires, your thoughts, and eventually your actions. Both outward and inward influences play their own roles in losing weight. The key is to learn how to pay more attention to the good inward influence that will help you lose weight.

 

Below are some outward influences and how they affect your weigh-loss progress:

The scale:

reinforces your success or failure every time you step on it. Lower numbers on the scale indicate you've lost some weight, but never enough according to your expectations. Higher numbers on the scale indicate you must have done something wrong. It doesn't account for water-weight, bloat/swelling, muscle mass, etc.

 

The mirror:

serves as our "critique meter", or something that reflects how the world views us, therefore, we must view ourselves that way too. The refrigerator and cupboards: reminders of the "NO" ZONES in our homes.

 

People:

when they know you are losing weight, they want a report on your progress. Physical body fatigue: dietary changes, exercise, or worrying sets in and you become irritable or sad at times.

 

Food:

new eating habits and healthier snack foods interfere with what you've formerly known as "normal", and the new routines are difficult to incorporate.

 

Calendars:

timeframes you've set to achieve your weight-loss goals is nearing its end, and you are scared that you'll be a failure "again".

 

Menus:

proper food selection seems like a CHORE, and eating just isn't pleasurable anymore because you know the caloric count, grams of sugar, grams of protein, and grams of fat of everything you put into your mouth. Clothes: as you lose the pounds, clothing begins to sag on you a bit, and this can make you look even worse. Having to spend money on new clothes can be depressing if it's not part of a current budget.

 

Experts:

they have all kinds of suggestions on losing weight, and they can't wait for you to listen to them.

 

This above list could go on and on based on how deeply you wanted to analyze this issue. But as you can see from this shortened version, all of the "outside" influences make us feel the stresses of losing weight. The inward influences I would like to address are those influences that some would label as "self-talk", or rather "self-affirmations" that either tell us we're okay or not okay in the world as we know it. It's that inner voice that all of us have that directs us to thinning, then inevitably directs us to act according to our thinking. Actions begin with thoughts, and thoughts begin with desires. And desires begin with what we want deep within our heart. Sounds complicated and poetic, I admit; but it is so worth the effort to take some time and figure out how you can make your heart speak its desires, which will prompt the thoughts, that will then lead to actions.

 

The inward influences are working well for you UNTIL you step on the scale or look in the mirror. Then what happens? You've allowed the outward influences to monitor your progress, and the outward influences want to override all of those positive inward influences. You begin to mock all of your hard work you're doing, find disappointments, identify shortcomings, and generally debase any accomplishments you achieved. You'll do this for one pound lost or for one hundred pounds lost. Why? Because you're allowing the outward influences to take over the inward influences. How do you make the inward influences rank higher than the outward influences? This is the trick...

 

WORK AT IT and remember it's TWO TO ONE!

As you hear the "devil on your shoulder" (the outward influences) toss around insults, doubts, and negative remarks, turn your head to the "angel on your shoulder" (the inward influences) that tells you that you are doing fabulous, you're making progress, you've worked so hard, you're improving every day, and you're going to make it.

 

For every negative comment, strike back with two positive comments. If you do this, you'll always stay one step ahead of the negative, which just might be enough to keep you moving forward toward the prize. The minute you DON'T strike back, the outward influences gain one-up on you, then two-up, then soon become ten-up... just like a board game and your game piece is falling behind on the squares. If you find yourself too far behind on the squares, you will become more discouraged and then quit the game all together. Like a kid who says, "well, I sure can't win now", leaves the game and pouts on his way home.

 

The outward influences must be part of the process, unfortunately. This is the monitoring, our measuring stick that proves we are doing the right things. The body doesn't understand this at all. The body is a grand machine that is constantly busy with checks and balances, making sure al systems are GO, that all operations are functioning to their best capabilities. It doesn't have time for "feelings." It only does its functional responsibilities accordingly. So you cannot count on the body to understand any inward influences or outward influences such as I've mentioned. It is only concerned about body functions and getting things done.

 

So work VERY hard at paying more attention to the inward influences. But remember that you have to put the inward influences in there before you can actually use them. Like putting gas in the car to make it go, you must put the good inward influences in to make them available when you need to call upon them.

 

Here are some great inward influences or "angel tones" you can put into your mind today that will help you achieve:

I am doing WELL, considering this isn't easy! I am making progress! I haven't lost yet, but I haven't gained either! I still need to lose XX pounds, but look what I've done so far! I didn't eat one bad snack today! I got in all of my fluids today! I still can get my fluids in today before bedtime! I got all of my protein in today! I can squeeze more protein in today if I try! I like the fact that It's getting easier to walk up the stairs! I like the fact that I can stoop over and pick that up off the floor! I like the fact that I can say NO to that cookie!

 

This gives you a START TODAY to begin to put more inward influences inside so you can battle the outward influences with more power! Keep in mind that you must do TWO inwards for every ONE outward. Stay AHEAD of the game, and you won't go home a quitter!

Being Trapped in the BAGGIES after Weight Loss

Remember when you weighed over 300 pounds and you literally felt "stuffed" into your clothes? Zippered pants and tailored shirts just weren't your "style", or closer to the truth, you couldn't find any zippered pants that fit you well or shirts that didn't peep open of pop buttons! Elastic became your closest buddy! Do you recall how self-conscience you were to not bend over for fear of busting out your seat? Or how about the way your large thighs would rub so much against the inside seam of your pants, you were glad that nobody could see that you had splitting material in between your legs?

 

Those are awful and painful memories of what life was like before your gastric bypass weight-loss surgery! It almost feels as if those memories are a whole lifetime behind you now, doesn't it? And for those who have had the surgery and are still working toward their goal weight, those memories aren't far enough away yet. Many gastric bypass patients, as they slim down, do not know how to wear smaller-size clothing. They find the freedoms of loose-fitting garments to be refreshing, less binding, and more relaxing. They often adore this newly-found delight and are happy with the way their clothing "hangs" on them instead of wraps tightly around their body.

 

These same patients who wear the loose clothing often have issues with thinking they have not lost enough weight. They will say things like, "the scale shows I've lost weight, but when I see myself in the mirror, I still look so large." For those patients who are feeling that way, I want to make a suggestion that just might be the simplest fix; I've dubbed this to be my "Getting Rid of the Baggies" campaign.

 

And I don't mean sandwich baggies either!

Losing weight so quickly is an adventure, to say the least. We go through a lot of size changes every few weeks. I recall when I was losing, I was going to the thrift stores every three weeks to buy more clothing to fit me until the next drop in size came. Not very expensive when they are "used" items. It was something I had to do!

 

Some patients have no clue that they are trapped in their baggies until someone points that out to them. This should be done in the kindest of ways, or in the manner that suits your friendship. If you truly are friends with someone who is trapped in the baggies, then you can be blunt and to the point by saying, "Get out of those baggies!" Others may require a gentler tone if you are to remain friends.

What if nobody is telling you that you're trapped in the baggies? Does that mean you're not? NO. It probably means that they are too afraid to tell you at risk of hurting your feelings. This is where I jump in... I'm going to give you some clues right now as to how to judge whether or not you are still wearing baggy clothes unnecessarily.

 

You know you're trapped in the baggies when:

You've lost 50 pounds and you haven't put on the next smaller clothing size. Fifty pounds is a LOT, and it SHOWS!

The shoulder seams are nearing closer to your elbows.

Your shirts or sweaters fit you like short dresses.

You can grab a huge fistful of material and still not be touching your body.

Your shirt or dresses fit you like oversized maternity wear.

Your shirts have leftover "stretch bumps" stuck in them where you don't have bumps like that anymore.

 

Your feet shift back and forth inside your shoes when you walk.

Your pantyhose can be pulled up to almost your armpits.

You become tangled as you walk because your pant legs get knotted up in between your legs.

Your half slip falls right off of you and unto the floor.

Your tank tops have become slings for the... Your sleeves flap in the wind like sails.

Your turtlenecks are now tortoise-necks that don't' even touch your neck.

Your rings are falling off. Put them AWAY until you can get them resized... I've seen the tears of people who've lost their rings!

Your socks stretch above the knees.

 

The rump of your pants sag low and appear to be harboring pockets of air. Getting the idea now? If you are guilty of any one of these baggie symptoms, I strongly urge you to go to your nearest store and buy a smaller size!

 

I can promise you, that if you get out of the baggies, you will feel so much better about yourself, you weight-loss achievements, and begin to appreciate in a deeper sense what the surgery has done for you. It's time to stop beating yourself up with unfounded criticism.

This certainly WAS a rough lesson on you, wasn't it? Well, at least you have a clue now and you didn't have to get mad at a friend telling you! And if one day your fiend DOES tell you that you're trapped in the baggies, tell them "thank you" and mean it by wearing clothes that flatter you. And for the FRIENDS who need to drop the bomb on someone trapped in the baggies.... if you're too shy to tell them to their face, mail them this article!
