5 Secrets Of Setting And Reaching Your Weight Loss Goals

Good intentions for weight loss are wonderful. Like a whole lot of folks, I swore I would start to exercise more, go on a diet, and lose those extra pesky pounds for good. Months later, I'm still deciding on the 'best' diet for me, and paying the monthly gym dues for visits that I am 'just about' to get around to.

 

Now that you know how to set up a specific, goal oriented, weight loss action plan, there is nothing stopping you!

What's the hold up?

I had the best of intentions to lose weight and keep it off. I never got started. According to the experts, I failed because I didn't have a specific, workable, weight loss plan. Studies in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people with firm action plans were more likely to engage in goal driven behavior, (eg.weight loss). In my case, I wanted to lose weight and start a healthier lifestyle. But as you can guess, this isn't as easy as just writing down "Lose weight and exercise more", and sticking it on the bathroom mirror. Developing an action plan is a process you must go through, really think about, clearly visualizing what you want. By answering the following questions, you can create your own weight loss and exercise action plan.

 

What are my goals?

What, exactly, do I want to achieve?

Get those ideas out of your head and on to paper. That helps to make them concrete and doable. Who doesn't like checking off lists when they get done?

 

There are five specific things you should keep in mind when writing down all of your weight loss goals:

 

1. Make your goals specific. Don't say you 'need to lose weight' or I'm 'going to lose weight', say you will do it. For example: "I will lose 15 lbs and take a walk every evening."

 

2. Make your excercise and weight loss goals measurable and specific. 'I'll walk on the treadmill three times a week for a half hour at a speed of 3.5 miles an hour'.

 

3. Write down your chosen goals. Create both short term and long term goals for losing weight. Keep a chart or journal to track progress and give yourself some encouragement as you reach your weight loss milestones.

 

4. Set deadlines. Make your weight loss goals not only measurable, but time specific. Set your weight and exercise goals realistically. It's hard to pursue goals that can never be attained. Unrealistic goals that never seem to be reached can add to your stress level.

 

5. Give yourself emotional reasons for continuing to lose weight. What moves you to action?

Imagine your feelings when you succeed. What will your reward for achievement be?

Write it down and plan for it. When should you begin? How about right now! It's decision time. You can continue to dream about a healthier life style, starting to lose weight and looking better, or you can do something about it today. You can stay stuck in your rut, or you can make a change. You can put off your happiness until another day, or you can begin doing positive things now, that you know you are capable of doing. The choice is yours. It's easy to fall into the trap of 'someday.' Someday I'll lose those extra pounds, but right now I have so many other things to take care o'f. The truth is, you will always have things to take care of, people to see, and places to go. You have to make time for a better life for yourself because you are worth it.

But the catch here is, GO BY RIGHT KNOWLEDGE. No doubt, internet is flooded with the wrong knowledge and myths that leads you nowhere, but it isn't hard enough to figure out the pearl in the ocean. Every now and then, we see some supplements or pills making tall claims which they down the line do not seem to validate. We will soon establish as we go on reading this article that there is absolutely no substitute for eating healthy and sweating out.

 

1) Diet or Slimming Patches: Considered one of the most popular way to lose weight, it claims to speed up your metabolism by wearing a slimming patch on your skin. It then breaks down the fatty tissues. Studies says these patches are neither effective NOR SAFE. The US Food and Drug Administration(FDA) eventually seized millions of these products from manufacture last year because they had terrible side effects.

 

2) Green Tea Extracts: You have pills under this category which contain polyphenols. Polyphenols are extracted from green tea and are thought to be strong antioxidants. These pills failed to prove their effectiveness too. It is advisable to consult your doctor if you are taking aspirin or blood thinning medications and you plan to take some green tea extracts because they may interfere with blood clotting.

 

3) Diet Pills with Ephedra: These pills have been banned in US but they are still available on internet. These pills are central nervous system stimulant that suppresses appetite. Generally, manufactures mix ephedra and caffeine which further increases the risk of high blood pressure.

 

4) Diet Pills with PPA: PPA stands for phenylpropanolamine. These pills suppress appetite. They come along with diet plan. Manufactures of drugs and supplements containing PPA voluntarily withdrew their products from market after it was found that these products were associated with strokes.

 

5) Fat Blockers: Another popular form of weight loss aids which bit the dust is fat blockers. It also made tall claims that it will absorb fats from the food you eat and flush it out. A university of California study found that chitosan (the fat-binding component of fat blockers) has absolutely no ability to absorb fats from the food.

2) Glucomannan: It also failed on the FDA's yardstick. It promised to reduce your appetite by filling up your stomach but there seem to be no evidence to support it. Glucomannan is derived from the root of a japanese plant name konjac.

 

3) Spirulina: It is a species of blue-green algae containing some essential nutrients and is pretty safe but again, its effectiveness is still questionable.

 

4) Magnetic Diet Pills: The US federal trade commission has brought legal action against marketers of these pills. These pills contain a fibre that is been considered to act like a fat-magnet which consumes up to five times its weight in dietary fat. Sorry, it failed miserably!

 

5) Weight Loss Shakes: MAY BE an answer for short-term weight loss but users have gained weight immediately once they stop using these shakes. These shakes are diet drinks powdered formulas and are substituted for meals. Not only this way to lose weight in unhealthy but also short-term.

 

6) Bulking Agents: These fibre and gum products promises to control appetite be absorbing liquid and swelling in stomach, thus reducing hunger. But the fact is these bulking agents are indigestible. They can be harmful to the body causing obstructions in the intestines, stomach or esophagus.

What Are You Willing To Do To Achieve Your Weight Loss Goals

I'm approached quite regularly about which diet is best, which book would I recommend and what exercise program should a person follow. People think they can just purchase a book to read and then some sort of magic occurs whereby reading it will cause their fat to magically disappear. Well, I'm here to break the news to you, the $40 investment in your weight loss book is just the start, there's a lot of hard work and other expenses involved.

 

Time Investment

There's time invested in your education (reading, watching videos etc), time you'll spend exercising doing both cardio and weight training. There's time spent creating your new meal plans as well as preparation of those meals the day before or days in advance. There's time involved in doing extra laundry because you're suddenly doing more exercising now on your weight loss journey.

 

Let me ask you this:

What's your favorite television show?

How much television are you watching in a given week?

1 Hour? Six? Are you willing to eliminate television to allow yourself time to go to the gym and prepare foods for the next day?

If not, then don't bother buying books that recommend food and exercise programs?

It takes time to prepare food for 5 or 6 meals in a day and to go to the gym once or twice a day. Weight loss requires a time investment.

 

The next thing that I did was I cut down on all sugar. I looked at labels very closely anything that was high in sugar, I didn't even buy it and bring it into my home. There are many items that are sugar free that are just as good as something high in sugar. I used to really struggled with liquids because I liked Dr. Pepper. But I have found that Crystal Light is just as good as Dr. Pepper and it has no calories. There's also some really good ice cream bars out there that are sugar free. I used those as a treat once a week when I stayed on my plan all week, I got an ice cream bar.

 

Food Investment

The quality of the food you put in your body is directly proportional to the quality of your cells. It's your cells that create energy and make your various bodily systems run, and if they're given the best quality food, then they're able to regenerate and be healthy. Conversely, low quality food creates a low quality cell. A low quality cell is not up to the demand of generating energy nor the proper removal of wastes which then results in sickness and disease. In conversation with a fellow regarding his food program and how he could make corrections to his diet to improve his health, burn fat, improve his workouts and achieve his weight loss goal, I suggested a few "new" products. Oatmeal, some whole grain wraps, spring mix salad, and Essential Fatty Acid, Almond butter and whole grain basmati rice were a few places to begin.

 

"You didn't tell me how expensive it was going to be!" was his response. Well, I don't consider it expensive, so I would not have said that it was. Our cells are our power plants in our body. Our body is constantly rebuilding itself daily and hourly. Our skeleton replaces itself once a year and the muscular lining of our stomach and our intestines is replaced every 3 to 4 days so it only makes sense to give it the highest quality food. Doesn't it?

 

You're probably going to come to the same conclusion that most other people do. The food I put in my body creates a healthy body and I must take care in my food choices. Whole grain oatmeal costs more money than cocoa puffs. Raw almonds cost more than hickory smoked almonds and you probably never knew what Essential Fats or Pro Biotics were. Weight loss requires an investment in food.

 

Cutting Expenses To Reach Your Goal

If you're not able to increase the amount of food you eat financially or the quality of the food you eat (organic), then what are you willing to do to get it. Are you willing to cut some other costs?

Are you willing to increase your sales at your job or home business to be able to afford this new change?

The first reasonable step is to make some switches or replacements. Take note of non nutritional foods in your day - consider snacks, junk foods, coffee, pop, cigarettes (I hope you're not still smoking), milk or dairy products, alcohol, vitamins, tums, Rolaids, pepto bismol etc and see how much you're spending on a daily or monthly basis. Are you willing to replace these for higher quality nutritional foods that will support you in your weight loss goals?

It can be a scary thought for some people. Others accept the challenge readily because they've truly committed to their weight loss goals and are willing to do Whatever It Takes! Switching and replacing is the easiest thing to do. Weight Loss requires sacrifice.

 

Invest in Yourself

Your body, your mind, your soul and becoming the best you can be is the single best investment you can make. Make the decision to eat the cleanest food you can, make the healthiest choices you can, begin to switch from non nutritional foods to nutritional foods and let go negativity in your life. Weight loss is easy, but requires some investment.

Weight Loss Made Easy

Many people have been coming to me recently about how I managed to lose so much weight so quickly. The truth of the matter is that weight loss really is a choice that we have to make. When I reached my peak weight of nearly 400 lbs, I knew that I either had to lose weight or I was going to die of a heart attack. So I made that choice that no matter what I was going to lose weight.

 

The first thing I had to do was identify what healthy eating was for me. I had spent many years addicted to fast food, caffeine, sugar, and starches. So for me, Adkins was a great diet plan. So I began that process. First I cut out all regular sodas and only drank diet soda. Then, I increased my water intake to 8-10 8 oz glasses of water every day. Changing our lifestyle is a gradual process I don't suggest anyone who's had a food addiction to just very abruptly change everything about their current eating habits. The next thing I did was cut out fast food. That was a hard one. I remember, many times having severe cravings for fast food, for something juicy, and greasy. Every time I would drive by McDonald's or Taco Bell, I would almost pass out thinking I was starving and that I had to have fast food. But in reality, any fast food place you go to has healthy choices. For instance, McDonalds and Wendy's both have salads which are definitely healthier than a Big Mac and Fries. I remember calling a friend and I couldn't hardly stand the cravings. She talked to me and helped me over the hump.

 

The next thing I did was cut out the carbohydrates. That was the hardest thing I did. The cravings usually last about 3-4 days and I did really well after that 3 days. I still craved carbs, but not nearly as much as I had in the past. By the end of the first week of a carb-free diet, I had lost 11 lbs. I was so excited. I could finally see the numbers going down and results of my hard work.

 

Losing weight isn't just about eating healthy. It's also about exercise. I started exercising at about the same time that I cut out all the unhealthy things out of my diet. As you can imagine at 400 lbs, I had a really difficult time with exercise. But the more weight I lost, the easier it became. Today I go to the gym 6 days a week for about an hour a day. You don't have to work out 4 hours a day. In fact, it's more healthy if you just do 30 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of sculpting. This will prevent you from getting lose skin especially when losing large amounts of weight like I have. I didn't hire a personal trainer, however I highly suggest anyone who is wanting to lose a large amount of weight to hire a trainer to help you monitor your progress. It's important to not lose to fast. Weight loss isn't a quick overnight process. It is a one day at a time journey into health and well being.

 

I also believe that weight loss is a spiritual journey. I found that when I really started believing in a Higher Power and really started my spiritual journey, it was so much easier for me to lose weight. I would pray to my Higher Power each morning and ask Him to help me to stay on track that day. When I didn't, I would inevitably fall off the wagon. I found that during this time, I grew spiritually by leaps and bounds. I developed a true sense of who I am as a person. You see, with each and every pound that I gained, I lost a little bit more of myself. I was hiding behind all the extra pounds. Today, I can say that I still have about 110 lbs left to lose, however, I am healthier and more fit than I have been since I was in high school.
