Teeth Whitening Articles, Tips and Information

Which Teeth Whitening System Is Right For You?

Modern dentistry has improved and changed a great amount in the last ten to twenty years, and this has led to new treatments being available to everyone, rather than just the few rich people who could afford it. People are visiting dentists for 'cosmetic' dental treatment in the same way that they would visit a cosmetic surgeon to have their body altered or enhanced.

Home tooth whitening systems are cheaper, but they normally use a peroxide bleach based formula and so the instructions that come with them must be followed to the letter.

With more and more celebrities having cosmetic dental treatments and exhibiting perfect teeth in magazines and on television, tooth whitening is one of the dental treatments that have soared in popularity for people young and old. Other treatments include implants, veneers, and alteration of the gum line. This article looks at the different types of teeth whitening systems and will help you assess which is best for you. There are various teeth whitening systems available, and they range from the very expensive to the relatively cheap and accessible. All teeth whitening systems fall into two main categories - those that must be carried out by a professional such as a dentist, and those that can be done at home. Home treatments are often cheaper, but can be less effective and can even cause lasting damage if applied incorrectly.

The key to selecting which tooth whitening systems is appropriate for you is to ask yourself the following questions:

Am I good at following written instructions?

What is my budget for this treatment?

Am I looking for immediate results or a course of treatment?

Am I comfortable visiting a dentist?

Do I have minor or extensive tooth staining?

Otherwise, the results may not be what you expected, and the sensitivity of the teeth can be increased. However, if you are confident about applying the treatment yourself and are prepared to finish the whole treatment without expecting instant results, home teeth whitening systems can be a cost effective way to achieve that celebrity look.

Salon or dentist based teeth whitening systems are more expensive, but can have longer lasting and more immediate effects. Dentists use similar peroxide based formulas to the home systems, but the effect is enhanced by the use of a laser. Laser whitening can make your teeth 5-6 shades lighter on the first visit by activating crystals inside a gel, but if you have extreme discoloration you may need to go back more than once.

The risks of laser teeth whitening are not great, with the most common side effect reported being increased sensitivity to hot and cold. Rubber dams are used to protect the gums when bleach based formulas are being used, and this ensures the gums are protected from the effects of the tooth whitening system.Modern lifestyles can have a bad effect on our teeth, with drinks like coffee, tea and red wine causing staining and discoloration. Teeth whitening systems are a way to instantly reverse the effects of our lifestyle, but are no substitute for regular brushing and flossing.

Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening

Everybody wants a whiter and brighter smile. Who doesn't?

And a person who longs to achieve a perfect smile is willing to spend thousands of dollars and endure the treatment for the sake of a whiter and brighter smile. The rewards are great. You become more attractive. Your gain more confidence. You develop more healthy oral hygienic habits. But there are also disadvantages like high costs and it is always wise to discuss the several advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages:

Tooth whitening procedures are very effective but there are also disadvantages like sore teeth or gums resulting from the bleaching treatment. This is only short term because when bleaching is discontinued, the sore disappears. This happens to patients who are sensitive to the bleaching chemical. Ask your dentist for any alternative bleaching solution that you are not allergic to. Clinical studies have shown that tooth whitening is effective to more than 78 percent of all patients who have undergone a certain procedure. But for those that bleaching did not work because of a more serious discoloration condition, other options maybe more potent. A good choice, albeit more expensive, are veneers or crowns. There are also patients who experience discomfort wearing the mouth-ray in a custom-fit tray bleaching procedure. This usually happens when the tray is not perfectly aligned with the teeth. You need to call your dentist and have him or her create adjustments to the mold so it will hold your teeth firmly and comfortably. Custom-Fit Tray Bleaching

This is an at-home teeth whitening procedure in which a tray is custom-fitted to your teeth. A teeth impression is taken from your mouth like you would when getting dentures and a custom-fit tray is created for you to take home and worn for a certain period of time. Before being worn, the tray is filled with bleaching gel. The length of time the tray is worn depends upon the gel's potency and your whitening needs. Because this procedure is more convenient and costs less, this is the preferred procedure of most people. Result is noticeable in a couple of days but the full effects of teeth whitening takes about 1 to 2 weeks. Custom-fir tray bleaching is more often used together with an in-office laser teeth whitening especially for people who have severe teeth discoloration.

Best results for teeth whitening, products & teeth bleaching

There is nothing worse than smiling in the mirror and seeing 2 rows of yellow teeth. What happened to those pearly whites we had as children?

Well, over time, our teeth start to darken because they absorb stains and they start to discolor. Some of the worst things we can consume that will impact the color of our teeth are tea, coffee, colas, red and smoking. The procedure known as teeth whitening or teeth bleaching is getting very popular. You no longer have to settle for those yellow teeth. You can brighten your smile either in the dentist chair, or at home using teeth whitening methods. There are a number of teeth whitening products including new tooth pastes and home use kits.

Advantages:

To improve appearance. This is the main goal of every person who wants to get his or her teeth whitened. Always associated with beauty and healthy lifestyle, a whiter and brighter set of teeth is highly coveted in this image-conscious world. If you have whiter teeth, you tend to smile more often because you have more confidence. Also, a whiter smile takes away the attention from any facial wrinkles or imperfection you might have and to that winning smile. And not but certainly not the least, a set of whiter teeth gives you a friendlier appearance than when your teeth were discolored or stained.

A popular method to teeth whitening is using at-home tray based teeth whitening products. This system uses a clear plastic tray that is filled with whitening gel and is then placed over your teeth. The tray is worn for several hours per day or at night while your sleep. The procedure often takes a few weeks for your teeth to come out white. Whether you do it at home or your have your dentist do it for you, it is important to use teeth whitening products that will provide lasting results, give you a naturally looking smile, are clinically proven to be safe as well as effective, uses low concentration of hydrogen peroxide and is approved by your dentist. There are a number of teeth bleaching products on the market sold over the counter that can do more harm than good.

Before you proceed with any form of teeth whiting treatment, your best bet is to consult your dentist first. They will likely be able to guide you in the right direction according to your current teeth discoloration. Yellow hued teeth respond well to teeth bleaching while gray hued teeth don't respond well at all. If you have porcelain veneers or other dental bonding, whitening will not help them at all. You will likely have to have them changed out if they are really discolored so that they match your other teeth. Because your teeth are so very important, please discuss the use of any teeth whiting products with your dentist to ensure the safety of your teeth long term.

Teeth Whitening Tooth Bleaching & Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

Tooth whitening is a common practice in general dentistry. Many people believe that white teeth are the greatest contribution to a perfect smile. As a person ages, teeth often become darker and stained. This is due to many factors including a change in the mineral structure of the tooth or stains such as coffee and tobacco. White teeth are now becoming more desirable with the spread of American culture worldwide.

White teeth are often associated with 'Hollywood smiles'. There are two popular methods of bleaching teeth. One is called the 'office bleach' which applies a high concentration of oxidizing agents for a short period of time. This procedure generally yields fast results, but can sometimes risk chemical burns. To prevent the risk of burns, the office generally uses a light-cured protective lawyer painted on the gums.

Another popular method of teeth bleaching requires the patient to use a mouthguard or strip to hold the oxidizing agent along the teeth for several hours a day. This can range from a period of 4 - 15 days and can be performed in the courtesy of your own home. This process is slower, but can still have the same risk to the gums. Discover how a healthy smile can improve your lifestyle by whitening your teeth. Many people never realize how simple and affordable it really is.

Laser Teeth Whitening - A Personal Experience

For many years, as I brushed my teeth each morning and evening and gazed into the mirror, I wondered just how different the picture I saw would be if I plucked up the courage to have laser teeth whitening treatment. Each time the thought crossed my mind my natural fear of the dentist, and the thought of the cost involved, quickly dispelled it.

Just over a year ago, however, I was on holiday in the Far East and tooth ache forced me to seek out a dentist at the much applauded dental department of the local international hospital. While having the necessary filling, I noticed that the centre also offered laser teeth whitening and that they were currently running a special promotion which was the equivalent of about half the cost I would pay back at home. It was too good an offer to pass up and so I made an appointment for later that week. The treatment was in two parts. On my first appointment, the procedure was explained to me and it was made clear that the results varied considerably from individual to individual. In my case, although my teeth were in very good condition for my age, years of cigarette smoking had left their mark and so, although a considerable improvement should be seen, my teeth were never again going to match the gleaming white teeth seen in the tooth whitening advertisements.

With the explanation of the procedure out of the way, my first appointment concluded with a clean and polish. Now whether this was typical of laser teeth whitening treatments, or was simply the standard at this particular dental centre, I don't know, but this particular clean and polish was the most thorough I have ever experienced and took no less than one hour and twenty minutes. That said, it was not a painful process, but was somewhat uncomfortable and not something I would like to go through too often.

Five days later I returned for the laser teeth whitening procedure itself.

Many people want to know how white their teeth are going to get after undergoing a teeth whitening procedure. While this question has a very subjective answer, many procedures can whiten your teeth up to nine shades lighter. Two or three shades can usually make a very significant difference in just about anyone's smile.

After fitting a large plastic guard into my mouth and packing the area around my gums with gauze, a protective gel was applied to my gums and this was set using a light. This process was again somewhat uncomfortable and setting the gel generated quite a bit of heat which was a little worrying, but overall things seemed to be proceeding smoothly.Next, a whitening gel was applied to my teeth and then the laser light process started. For this a small hand-held laser light instrument was used and my teeth were divided into four sections (upper right, upper left, lower right and lower left) with the light being applied for about one and a half minutes to each section in turn. This process was repeated four times and then the whitening gel was rinsed off and fresh gel applied before a second round of four further light exposures.

Up until this point the procedure had been painless and seemed simple enough. However, as the second set of light exposures started, I began to experience shooting pains in a number of my teeth. At first these were reasonably mild, but the intensity soon increased and, after just two further light treatments, I was forced to call a halt to the proceedings. This sensitivity is apparently quite normal and, although it varies considerably from person to person, many patients fail to run the full course of eight light exposures. What is also common, and which I hadn't realized until after the treatment, was that the whitening process started by the laser light exposure continues for several days after the treatment, as do the shooting pains!

So what were the final results like and was it worth having the treatment?

Well, I certainly noticed a considerable difference in the appearance of my teeth and even now, a year after the treatment, my teeth are still much whiter and brighter than before. This said, they are slowly beginning to discolor again and I would probably need to repeat the treatment again in about another year or eighteen months to maintain a white, bright smile. So, would I go through the treatment again?

Yes, without doubt. I am certainly no fan of the dentist, but the difference that this particular treatment has made to my life is significant and I will not hesitate to return for further treatment when the time comes.

Cosmetic Dentistry - Teeth Whitening

Teeth become discolored for a number of reasons. A few normal reasons for teeth discoloration include staining, aging and chemical damage. Coffee, tea, soda and cigarettes are a few of the leading contributors to discolored teeth. Besides from staining, genetics and disease can also play a role in changing the color of one's teeth. Everyone has different genes, and it is sometimes impossible to determine why someone's teeth are discolored. We do however know that a teeth whitening procedure can always help restore one's teeth back to their original, white color.

Bleaching of the teeth is a chemical process used to lighten the shade of one's teeth. This procedure is usually performed at the dentist's office and sometimes can be done in the comfort of one's home, using the materials provided by their dentist. Before the procedure begins, a custom tray is sculpted to match the patient's mouth. This ensures a correct amount of whitening solution is used and that it is spread evenly throughout all of the teeth.

At home, this procedure can last for two to three hours in which you will have the tray and solution in your mouth. Depending on your desired results, sometimes the tray is required to sit overnight.
