Teeth Whitening Can Create a Positive Outlook

A smile on a face is worth more than money. It can create magic. But discolored teeth can hamper this magic. So often we get anxious about our bad teeth, especially when we see that our teeth are loosing their shine and white look. But not any more. Science has helped us to solve this problem by providing us the technique of artificially whitening our teeth, called Tooth whitening.

The procedure utilizes some oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide which breaks down to hydrogen mono peroxide inside the mouth, in order to lighten the shade of the tooth.

In the field of dentistry, this teeth whitening is popularly known as Tooth bleaching. It is considered a common procedure in general dentistry, but actually it is a special part of cosmetic dentistry.

At our early age we possess a beautiful setting of white teeth, but as we grow older our teeth start darkening. This happens due to many reasons- changes in the mineral structure of the teeth, by bacterial pigments, foodstuffs, and tobacco(for smokers).

The second way involves utilization of a thin mouth guard or a strip with a low concentration of oxidizing agent, for a long time say for several hours a day for at least five to fourteen days. This is often called over-the-counter bleaching or take- home bleaching. Obviously, this is a much slower method with less risk to the soft tissues.

This does not end here as tooth bleaching may have some side effects, which may include chemical burns. This happens if high-concentration of oxidizing agent gets in contact with the unprotected, exposed tissues that may discolor the mucous membranes.

Tooth whitening is a very recent trend. A few years ago it was not widely known to many people. But it all happened due to the rapid spread of American culture worldwide, where it first became popular. Now many countries follow the process and many people have taken it as an important part of their dental care.

More on Teeth Whitening: Teeth Whitening Method

As always, before you attempt to self medicate or try a new health regimen or program we suggest you retain the services of a qualified health care professional.

Are Professional Laser Teeth Whitening Techniques Better?

The latest advancement in laser whitening gel is used with an in-office laser that results in a very fast and effective bleaching system. The gel is applied to the teeth after appropriate gum and mouth soft tissue protection is placed. Then, a laser light is used to activate the chemical in the gel that has been especially designed to absorb energy from the light and quickly penetrate tooth surfaces. This technique results in a very fast laser whitening effect.

The length of time needed for full color restoration of course depends on the amount and type of tooth enamel discoloration apparent.

The ZOOM teeth whitening system is an example of this type of system. Although very fast, many dentists are wary of this process due to the potential of gum and soft tissue discoloration.

The cost of this very fast laser whitening can vary based on your location with many of the larger cities being more expensive than other areas. Laser teeth whitening process in a professional dental office can be expected to cost between 250 and 500 dollars on average for the full treatment. Generally speaking, the price of teeth whitening increases with the number of in-office treatments required. So the more discolored the teeth, the more visits are required and the potential of a higher total cost. Dental insurance typically does not cover laser whitening as it's considered cosmetic.

Remember though that once the dentist has you in the office, they will want to do a complete exam to check for general dental health. Few if any dentists will do a whitening treatment on teeth that need corrective dental work done. That is, a good cleaning, cavities filled, etc.

Dentists, like all professionals, will push to get all the business they can from you. It's in your best interest though to carefully consider the importance of good dental health. So if it comes to a choice between teeth whitening and good dental health, your best interests are served by having a solid set of teeth even if they may not be as white as desired. This means that if you want whiter teeth from a dentist office, plan on a full commitment to total tooth care and mouth health.

Laser teeth whitening treatments though are not more effective on whitening teeth than many quality custom tray home products. Though much faster results are available, you run the risk of gum and tissue damage due to the aggressiveness of the products used in laser whitening. Teeth sensitivity can also be an issue.

So the results are in. Much faster and expensive laser teeth whitening or a slower though probably safer home teeth whitening solution, the choice is yours.

Make Sure Your Home Teeth Whitening Kit Has What It Takes To Get The Job Done!

Many of the home teeth whitening products available today are a great value and can help give you the white and bright smile you desire. Be aware of these few points so that the product you order will actually do the job.

Although there are many products on the market today that claim to whiten stained teeth and remove discoloration, the reality is that the definition of "whiten" can mean anything from a single shade where you may not even notice the difference to a full teeth whitening make-over.

Carbamide peroxide also comes in a variety of strengths from 10-22% with some as high in the lower 30% range.

Your most effective home teeth whitening kit will have or use the following:

CARBAMIDE PEROXIDE

- If a dental whitening system does not contain carbamide peroxide, you will not get the results you want in a timely manner. Carbamide peroxide is the whitening agent or active ingredient in most effective whitener gels.

Although the higher the number, the more aggressive and stronger the product is, it also increases the risk of having sensitive teeth and discolored gums and soft tissue. A good product that also seems to be the most popular is the 16% area. This strength gives the speed we need to see faster results but at a safe level so as not to damage gums and teeth.

The AMOUNT of the gel product: This is where many people run into problems. All of us NATURALLY assume that more product the better, right? The problem however is that the amount of the product can be increased using a number of very cheap fillers and inactive ingredients. This means that more is needed to do the same job as a smaller amount of higher quality product. The key is to only buy from reputable companies and not simply look at the amount of the product offered. More product means less comfort while holding a mouthful of goo in your mouth while trying to use enough cheap gel to whiten your teeth. Ick! Get the good stuff and save yourself the hassle.

TEETH WHITENER TRAYS

- For any whitening gel to work, it must be in contact with your teeth enamel. Tobacco stained teeth, or yellowed teeth need the gel product to touch the enamel to whiten and remove the staining.

Moldable trays come in two types. The first is similar to an athletic mouth guard where you heat it slightly in hot water then bite won leaving an impression of your teeth. This works and is effective but is not the most comfortable to place and hold in your mouth. If you're planning on keeping your teeth bright and stain free, you should consider the second type of bleaching tray.

This tray is a custom made teeth bleaching tray made from an impression of your mouth by a dental lab. Higher quality teeth bleaching kits provide material and instructions to make a mold of your teeth similar to the way a dentist might when creating a crown. The impressions are then sent to the lab where they make a custom fitted bleaching tray out of comfortable material. No worries because you can't mess it up. The process takes another step with the dental lab involved but the wait is well worth the effort.

In the end, the only way to make absolutely certain that you get the whitest teeth possible is to use high quality products.

A Quick Home Teeth Whitening Review of the latest Products Available Today!

There are many products and methods to whitening your teeth at home that claim they do a great job. We're going to take a look at some of the most popular methods along with the benefits and negatives found.

First up, Professional Teeth Whitening:

BENEFITS:

Fast results. Of all the methods to whiten teeth, having your teeth whitened through a professional service is by far the fastest.

Healthy Teeth: A professional will do a comprehensive checkup [which you probably need anyway] to make certain your teeth are in good condition.

NEGATIVES:

Need to make an appointment: If you're pressed for time, this is not the most convieient option.

Price:

Professional services simply cost more

Maintenance: Once your teeth are their whitest, an occasional maintenance treatment is needed that is usually an extra expense.

Product #2.

Whitestrips example: Crest Whitestrips, etc.

These are strips of soft plastic material that slips onto your front teeth and whitens your smile

BENEFITS:

Inexpensive:

Whitestrips and products of this type are typicaly available at your local drug store or larger supermarkets at attractive price points.

Convienient:

Us this product whenever you have spare time. Because of the simplicity of design, you can use it anywhere and not look like your mouth is full.

Effective:

Although these products typically do not whiten your teeth to their whitest, they can and do whiten and brighten your smile to a point.

NEGATIVES;

Incomplete: Although these products do whiten your smile, they only whiten the teeth that are treated. This is usually just the front teeth leaving other teeth discolored.

Not completely effective: Due to it's very nature, there is limited gel material to effectively whiten your teeth to their absolute whitest.

Use Difficulty: Although small, they are still required to be in contact with your teeth. Keeping the whitestrip products in place while the gel does it's work can be a challenge.

Product #3.

Teeth Whitening Toothpastes ie: Rembrandt, Colgate Simply White At one time simply white was a brush on proudct that claimed to whiten teeth. Today, it's a toothpaste from a major product provider.

BENEFITS:

Ease of use: We all brush our teeth so this product should be a natural for all of us to use.

Maintenance: Higher quality toothpaste, although more expensive also has additional ingredients that help keep your whitened smile bright. This is especially important if you're planning to have your teeth renewed with any teeth whitening solution.

NEGATIVES:

Whitening Ability: If using a teeth whitening toothpaste is your strategy for whiter teeth, it won't work. At least, it won't work to a degree where you can easily notice. This product is great to maintain the white shade of your teeth and especially effective as a maintenance product. As a stand alone home teeth whitening solution however, don't bother.

Price:

These products cost a lot more than regular toothpaste. Still, if they can help keep your teeth brighter longer, why not?

Three products with three different sets of benefits and negatives. Professional teeth whitening solutions are expensive but can get your teeth and smile into condition rapidly.

The whitestrips idea promises convienience and delivers on that promise. To bad we couldn't see a clear difference in the color and shade of our teeth.

It's important to remember that although the teeth whitening toothpaste product may not be particularly effective as a teeth whitening agent itself, it does a great job keeping your new white teeth looking their brightest

Teeth Whitening and Sensitive Teeth

Tooth whitening to achieve that "perfect" smile has recently become extremely popular. However, there is a price to be paid for that beautiful smile. One of the side effects of tooth whitening is temporarily increased sensitivity to heat or cold. This increase in sensitivity is seen by most people as being a minor side effect of treatment, plus it usually goes away after treatment is over. However, if your teeth are already overly sensitive to temperature, then you may need to be more careful in choosing and using a tooth whitening method.

This agent penetrates into the enamel and oxidizes the stain deposits, in course of time the underlying dentine layer gets bleached. There are two ways for this bleaching. In the process called Office Bleach, a high concentration of these oxidizing agents is applied for a short time. It gives quick results but there remains a danger of chemical burns of the soft tissues. So some precautions are taken while applying this method. A light cured protective layer is used which is painted on the gums, with care so as to protect the soft tissues.

There are several different methods available for applying the whitening agent to your teeth. One is the tray type system, which uses a carrier tray to hold the whitening agent next to your teeth. Another method is the popular whitening "strips", which are made of very thin plastic impregnated with the whitening agent. These strips are designed to adhere to your teeth when pressed onto them firmly. Also available are gels which contain the whitening agent. They have a thick consistency which allows them to be applied to your teeth and stay until wiped off.

The increased sensitivity is caused by the main ingredient used in most tooth whitening products, either carbomide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide. These two compounds are actually forms of bleach, hence you may see the terms "tooth whitening" and "tooth bleaching" used interchangeably. If you are using a product that contains either of these compounds, there are a few steps you can take to lessen the increase in thermal sensitivity.

One way to reduce the sensitivity is to reduce the time that the tooth whitening product remains on your teeth. For example, if the instructions call for 2 hours per treatment, then reduce this to only 1 hour. Another way would be to increase the time between treatments. If the usual frequency is once per day, then try doing the treatments every other day. If you still experience discomfort you could do both - decrease the treatment time to 1 hour and perform the treatments every other day.

Remember, even people who do not initially have sensitive teeth usually experience a temporary increase in sensitivity during treatment, so you will probably still experience some discomfort. Another suggestion is to brush your teeth before and after treatment with a toothpaste especially designed for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes usually use a flouride compound to de-sensitize your teeth. There are several different ones on the market Also, if you discuss your plans with your dentist, they may able to provide you with a professional flouride treatment that can be applied at home.

One other option is available if you have tried the tooth whiteners and find that they are too uncomfortable. You can use one of the available tooth whitening toothpastes, which will clean your teeth with a mild abrasive rather than bleach them. These tooth whitening toothpastes do not use bleach, so you should not experience any added sensitivity, but they will not whiten your teeth as much as bleaching.

As your can see, if you have sensitive teeth, the tooth whitening process may take longer and require a little extra effort, but you should be able to achieve the same results in the end: a whiter, brighter smile.

Laser teeth whitening is becoming an increasingly popular cosmetic procedure. Learn more about the various tooth whitening products, systems and more at Lustrous Teeth.com.
