Teeth Whitening Articles, Tips and Information

How is Teeth Whitening Done?

The process of teeth whitening sounds like one that is a no-brainer, but it is important to know how it works and what is involved.  Teeth whitening can be done in two basic ways, using a bleach based chemical or a non-bleach based chemical.  Most can be done in a dentist’s office while others can be performed at home with significant savings.  Here is what to consider when looking at each:

Bleaching Procedure- Some bleaching procedures can be costly, but they can also improve the shade of the teeth from four to eight shades.

Non-Bleach Procedure- These procedures are basically what can be purchased from retail stores.  For example, the whitening strips and high-end toothpastes that promise a teeth whitening finish.  These are used by dentists when you go in for your annual cleaning, so with a good amount of dedication and hard brushing you can get a teeth whitening effect.

There are different types of bleaching procedures:

1.    Light-activated teeth whitening is when the dentist uses a light to cause a quick and remarkable change in teeth color.  This teeth whitening procedure can cost around $500 at a dentist’s office, but usually requires a yearly renewal to keep the teeth white.

2.    Some dentists will create a custom mouthpiece for an individual to use to help in the teeth whitening process.  This mouthpiece is worn for a certain period of time, causing the teeth to become white.  This is usually around $300 for the procedure and the device.

It is important to remember to try to consult a professional before having any of these teeth whitening procedures performed.  Some people react to certain procedures or chemicals in different ways than others and that will need to be determined before the teeth whitening begins.  Make sure you find what will work best for you and what will cause the least amount of discomfort.

Insurance and Teeth Whitening

Even though it is proven that personal appearance means a lot when it comes to getting a job and getting to the level of personal success that one thrives to achieve, it generally does not fall under insurance coverage.  The reason is the same reason that you must
undergo several evaluations before insurance will cover the cost of braces.  Insurance generally does not cover anything that is deemed simply “cosmetic”.

For instance, if someone has crooked teeth that are not causing an extreme amount of pain or may cause discomfort or ill health in the future, they probably won’t be covered by insurance.

Cosmetic surgery is generally anything that is done to any part of your body that is only done for one’s personal appearance. If it is just done to make the teeth straight to correct a personal self-esteem issue it is not enough for your insurance to step up and foot the bill.

Generally, teeth whitening is not something that will correct a considerable amount of pain or discomfort; it is just done so the individual can improve their appearance.  Unless the chemicals that are causing the teeth to be discolored or stained are potentially rotting or falling apart then insurance will not cover the expense.

If you want to clean your teeth to get a solid white look, but are feeling a considerable amount of pain then the best thing to do is to see a dentist.  The reason you should see a dentist is because they are trained and educated on what to look for in causes for stains
and discomfort in teeth.  If they see what they are looking for and can determine that the chemicals on your teeth could be causing pain then they could recommend insurance coverage.

Again, with insurance coverage it is difficult to be covered under a procedure that is deemed mainly “cosmetic”.  If insurance companies covered cosmetic surgeries then they would likely have to raise premiums even more than they are now because of the
increased interest in cosmetic surgeries.  By making only “necessary” surgeries possible for insurance coverage insurance companies insure that those in pain are taken care of.

Invisalign

When the idea of straightening one’s teeth comes up it is generally thought of as a long and drawn out process of unsightly metal braces and rubber bands.  However, there is an alternative with Invisalign’s custom molded braces that are invisible to the naked eye.
The moldings are more friendly than braces in that you can take them off when brushing or eating and little upkeep is needed other than going in once every two weeks to remold and apply the moldings again to gradually straighten the teeth.

Every individual will have a different process that treats their teeth in the correct manner to achieve straightening.

Some will need to see their dentist every six to eight weeks to alter the moldings while others may need to go in every other week.  The point being that compared to traditional teeth straightening methods like braces the Invisalign process is much less invasive.

Usually the Invisalign process takes a little over a year in all and won’t alter your appearance over all during the year.  Nobody will notice and it won’t affect your speech like some retainers and braces in the traditional process do!  They are extremely comfortable to wear and remove to floss, brush or eat.  Invisalign is specifically designed to achieve the goal of braces without the hassles and negatives of the traditional process.

While some dental conditions will not be fixed by Invisalign, it does promise to fix the most common problems such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites.  The best way to determine if you can be helped by Invisalign is to visit your dental professional and see if
your problem can be overcome by this very non-invasive procedure.  When consulting your dental health professional you can also ask for a recommendation for an Invisalign practitioner and then go in for your moldings.

The process begins relatively quickly after visiting the Invisalign professional as they will simply take a molding of the teeth and repare the moldings.  The next visit you will receive and begin to use the moldings yourself.  Before you know it you will have whiter
and straighter teeth!

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

The concept of teeth whitening and home teeth whitening was first introduced around 1989, giving the medical and consumer health awareness communities plenty of time to judge its effectiveness and safety.  In general, the teeth whitening process has been given
a good report in reference to both safety and effectiveness.  However, what do you need to consider when you are looking at the safety of teeth whitening?  Here are a few things to consider:

>     Some concern has been shown in the medical community and consumer community at large about the risk of bleaching teeth whitening agents causing cancer.  However, studies have shown that the concentration of carbamide peroxide in teeth whitening does not cause any cancer in mouth tissue or gums.  In fact, there is an agent in saliva that seems to offset the amount of peroxide given off by the teeth whitening agents.
>     Concern and attention has also been given to the fear of bleaching agents causing a tooth’s enamel to wear off or be damaged.  As a matter of study the medical experts actually say that more damage is done to a tooth’s enamel by soft drinks or fruit juices than tooth whitening bleach.
>     The topic of nerve endings being affected by teeth whitening is still in its early stages since this can be studied only in longer intervals like 5 to 8 years after the teeth whitening procedure.  In spite of this hurdle there is still little damage being shown to teeth that have undergone whitening and been in for a 5 to 8 year checkup after the process.
>     While it isn’t possible to have teeth whitening done if you have caps or crowns on your teeth it is possible to undergo the rocedure if you have simply had fillings or root canal type procedures.  So far the dental histories have not shown any problems from this procedure, but studies are still in the early stages.

While the above mentioned studies are true and accurate it is still best to consult with your dental health professional to determine your best course of action.  Every person’s dental history is different, meaning just because studies have supported teeth whitening in
certain situations it could still be risky for you!

Laser Teeth Whitening

We all want to lose weight, get a tan, and have healthy looking whiter teeth, but do we all want to spend the amount of time it takes to do so?  Not so much, we would much rather have somebody create or invent something to get the same result with our teeth without
having to spend so much time doing so.  Not only do we want it quick but we want it painless and hassle free, we don’t want anything to come in the way of our white teeth!

With a slight concentration of bleach, these are given a potent punch to whiten your teeth.  Where you can buy the non- bleach whiteners in the store for a decent price, bleaching procedures can cost upwards of $1,000.

The most intriguing aspect of laser teeth whitening is that it doesn’t take hours upon hours and days upon days to see the desired effect.  Your dental health professional will begin the laser teeth whitening process by cleaning the teeth in a more traditional manner.
The dentist will remove plaque that gets in the way of the cleaning process before the laser comes into the procedure.

In the laser teeth whitening process a dental health professional will apply a whitening gel to the teeth just before placing the patient under a laser designed to facilitate the process.  The laser in the teeth whitening process speeds up the procedure by activating
the gel that has been placed on the teeth.  Sometimes the gel and laser must be repeated in several sessions to overcome the amount of staining and discoloration on the teeth.

The cost of laser teeth whitening is significantly higher than purchasing a home teeth whitening kit from the local drug or grocery store.  Home teeth whitening kits can cost anywhere from a few dollars for a good whitening toothpaste to just under $100 for the
more sophisticated gel or molding based whitening kits.  Laser teeth whitening can cost between $500 and $1,000 depending on the dentist and the extra benefits he/she will provide.

With laser teeth whitening you may be a little bit lighter in the pocketbook, but you will have a better smile, sometimes in as little as one afternoon!  So for every individual the choice is to decide what is more important to you, a quick and white smile or saving a
few bucks and hoping for the best.  Laser teeth whitening may be expensive, but it certainly can produce results.
