lower amount of nicotine than cigarettes.
Another option is to smoke cigarettes that contain herbal ingredients.
This may reduce dependence on smoking but can also cause side effects
because they contain high levels of tar and carbon monoxide.
Acupuncture and acupressure are other methods that can be used to stop
smoking .Both these Oriental methods stimulate the release of endorphins.
Endorphins are natural painkillers that create a sense of well being
and lower the dependence on cigarettes. The advantage of these aids is

as to how to give up smoking. It is staffed by both counselors and therapists
who specialize in understanding the mind of a smoker.
Another pharmaceutical aid is Zyban. It breaks the smoking habit by dulling
the nicotine sensors present in the brain. Verenicline too stops the
nicotine sensors from being stimulated thereby nullifying the pleasurable
effects obtained through a smoke. However, these drugs should not be
taken by people who are suffering from hypertension or epilepsy. Even
others should take it under medical supervision.
At the clinic, the smoker undergoes several counseling sessions, which
are conducted on a one to one basis as well as in groups. The counseling
session normally lasts an hour and is held twice or thrice a week. However,
the interaction is not limited to counseling sessions alone. A smoker
can consult or interact with the counselor at any point of time.
All smokers experience withdrawal symptoms like emotional distress or
abnormal weight gain when they give up smoking. It is at this stage that
counseling proves very useful. It provides the emotional support that
the smoker desperately needs.
Some clinics put the smokers on nicotine replacement therapy to effectively
control the withdrawal symptoms. Based on the smoker’s likes and
dislikes they advise the use of nicotine patch, nicotine inhaler, nicotine
gum or nicotine tablets.
Regular exercise is also a part of the program. The exercises make the
smoker feel healthy and reduce the urge for a smoke. Some clinics also
advise the smoker to pick up a new hobby or interest to keep him busy.
The clinics stay in touch with smokers even after they have finished
the program. The idea is to provide continuous support so that
the smoker does not go back to smoking again. The patients are mailed
pamphlets providing useful information or asked to attend seminars. Many
consider this phase of treatment more important than actual quitting. This
is probably because many people tend to go back to smoking after few
years.

nicotine unnecessarily. They can either use a 2mg gum or a 4 mg gum depending

show that smokers who attend a specialist clinic are four times more
likely to succeed in giving up smoking, than those who rely on self-control
alone. Some people have benefited from acupuncture and hypnosis, which
may be worth trying.
The gum is most effective when chewed for half an hour continuously.
After this the gum should be allowed to rest between the cheeks and the
tongue. This step is very important as it allows the continuous release
of nicotine. Once the taste of the gum disappears you can chew the gum
again. It is advisable not to eat or drink anything 15 minutes before
using the gum as it can reduce its effectiveness.
People who suffer from hypertension and heart ailments should take the
gum only under supervision. The gum is totally safe and can be used by
people of all age groups. Minor side effects like mouth sores or indigestion
are sometimes associated with the gum. As a precautionary measure cigarettes
must not be used along with the gum since the nicotine levels in the
blood will increase which is harmful to the body.
The gum is available in mint and citrus flavors, and you can choose the
flavor that you like more.
Stop smoking help

insurance companies, or even from their employers. However, the most
useful help continues to come from skilled counselors, who can guide
the smokers well.
Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) uses a skin patch, nasal spray, inhaler,
chewing gum, or tablets to provide small doses of nicotine. This helps
smokers to get over the withdrawal symptoms. NRT may double a smoker's
chances of quitting smoking, as compared to those who take no therapy.
Another druf that is gaining popularity is the anti-depressant medicine
Bupropion. This chemical is sold under the brand name Zyban, and is the
first non-nicotine medication approved by the FDA. The treatment lasts
from 8 to 12 weeks and should be started at least a week before the smoker
decides to leave smoking.
