Skin Care Articles, Tips and Information

Skin care basics should always include a good sunscreen

Growing up, I'm sure we've all heard our mothers say "Go get some sun, you need your vitamin D." These days however, the risks of dry skin from sun damage are a very real concern. Ironically, skin care studies show that Vitamin D produced in the body with the help of exposure to sunlight is the very thing that can help the body to fight skin cancers. But exactly how much time is safe to spend in the sun without the benefit of any sunscreen? And what sunscreen is best for when we do spend a lot of time outdoors?

More research needs to be done, but it's a safe assumption that most people likely get their needed daily exposure to help their bodies produce Vitamin D during their walks to and from their cars in a given day.

Research done in Britain recently, suggests that the exposure period to sunlight without benefit of sunscreen should be no more than 10 to 15 minutes at noon, when the sun is at its strongest. If the stronger intensity of the sun factors in, that figure likely would decrease to less than 10 minutes a day of exposure without sunscreen!

These days, the manufacture of sunscreen is regulated heavily through the Food and Drug Administration, and it appears that no one type of sunscreen stands out over another, other than the choice of SPF amounts or for those with skin sensitivities.

Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Using a "broad-spectrum" sunscreen can protect the skin from both ultraviolet A and B rays also known as UVA and UVB.

Skin care is even more important for older adults or people with sensitive skin. Their skin tends to burn easily and they should use an SPF of 30 or stronger. People with sensitive skin or allergies should also consider the ingredients and make choices that are free of dyes, chemicals, alcohol, preservatives, perfumes and para-aminobenzoic acid or PABA.

If sun exposure will be particularly high, using a more physical sunscreen, like zinc or titanium oxide, might be the better choice, as it will stop all sunlight from reaching the skin. Sunscreen should be applied a half-hour before going out into the sun and should be reapplied every few hours. And if you are swimming, remember that 98 percent of the sun's rays pass through water, so without some sort of "water-resistant sun screen and frequent applications, a sunburn is inevitable.

Per FDA regulations, sunscreens touting "water-resistant" have to maintain the indicated SPF after 40 minutes in the water, unless it's rubbed off. Even if a sunscreen is water resistant, it needs to be reapplied frequently, especially if you are spending a lot of time in the water. Wet skin burns more easily. Keep in mind that nothing is entirely "waterproof" so products claiming such are likely only water-resistant and should be treated as such and should also be reapplied frequently.

Gone are the days of the artificially orange cast to the skin. Sunless tanners have come a long way in cosmetic appearance and are a viable option to get that "healthy glow" without the risks of sun damage. Above all, if there is something about the health of your skin that gives you reason for concern, don't hesitate to talk with your doctor or dermatologist. Skin care is essential to a healthy skin. Take good care of your skin, use sunscreen, a quality shielding lotion and follow smart skin care rules, and your skin will take care of you.

Anti-Aging Skin Care -- An Introduction

Anti-aging skin care is a broad field based on reducing the visible effects of aging on the human body. In this introduction to the field, I cover the definition of anti-aging, the symptoms and the treatment of the skin in order to reduce the effects of ani-aging. In order to investigate the field of anti-aging skin care, we must first define exactly what is aging, in relation to the skin.

Weight Loss Consultant - Many of you have given up on weight loss. I've been there and it feels like you are at wits end. You don't know what to do. You've tried it all. Now you believe it's impossible for them to lose weight.

Although it has powerful abilities to renew itself, we all eventually succumb to the effects of time.

Aging is a natural and inevitable process. As we grow older, the human body deteriorates over time. Modern lifestyles dicate that most of us will die from heart disease, cancer or perhaps even violent means -- these can be considered premature forms of death. Ultimately, we would otherwise die from multiple organ failure as a result of aging.

That being said, the human body remains a capable one right the way through to our senior years. The obvious signs of our aging are curvature of the spine, loss of calcium in our bones (especially for women), wrinkles, skin tags or "age spots", baldness, greying of the hair and hearing and eyesight loss. For a multitude of reasons, many of us wish to minimize these inevitable signs of aging. From this desire has spawned an entire industry devoted to anti-aging skin care.

The most effective anti-aging skin care regimen should start as early as possible, before the onset of any symptoms. Starting as early as your teens is beneficial in the long run. Prevention is better than cure but there are still many options for those in their later years. A holistic regime is the most effective. Start by eating correctly -- stick to natural and organic foods. Avoid chemicals where possible. Drink plenty of water. Eat many portions of fruit and vegetables daily. Avoid stressful situations. Get at least eight hours of sleep every day. Stay out of the sun. This advice will hold you in very good stead.

In addition to this, there are a variety of commercial anti-aging skin care products that can aid in preventing the signs of aging. Vitamin C and vitamin C derivative products can be found everywhere. Vitamin C both promotes the production of collagen and is also an anti-oxidant. Collagen is an essential protein found in human skin whilst anti-oxidants sweep up harmful free radicals from the body. However, vitamin C is highly unstable when exposed to air which reduces its anti-aging potential, hence why there are many vitamin C derivative products on the market.

Botulinum endotoxin (or "Botox" as it is more widely known) paralyses muscles for a temporary period. Popular for both men and women, it is commonly used around the eyes, to reduce the appearance of wrinkles popularly referred to as "crows feet". Whilst considered a drastic measure by relatively few, Botox procedures are actually amongst the safest forms of anti-aging skin care, when we compare the reward to the risk.

These are but two of the possible treatments to prevent the signs of aging. This field of skin care is a huge one and offers made-to-measure treatment options for everyone.

Great Looking Skin - A Simple 4 Step Skin Care Guide

Step 1:

Decide what type of skin you have.

This is important so you know how to care for your skin and what products to use. There are 3 basic skin types: dry, oily and combination skin types.

Dry Skin Dry skin occurs when the dermis does not secrete enough oil, or sebum.

Type 1:

The result is tight, drawn, flaky skin and a dull complexion. In more extreme cases, dry skin lacks elasticity and can be extremely sensitive to the sun, wind, and cold temperatures.

Type 2:

Oily Skin This type of skin has over-reactive oil producing glands, which makes the face shiny, especially the forehead, down the central panel of your nose and the chin (the T-zone). The pores of this skin type are enlarged making it prone to blackhead, pimple and acne. Oily skin needs special cleansing to keep the pores unclogged.

Type 3:

Combination Skin People with combination skin typically have some oily skin and either normal or dry skin on different parts of their face. Normal skin has a balanced oil and water content and feels smooth and velvety, not dry or oily. Normal skin is evenly toned with tiny, generally unclogged pores. After a wash it feels smooth and comfortable. Normal skin only occasionally breaks out in spots.

Combination:

Normal to Oil People with normal to oily skin generally have normal skin on their cheeks and oily skin with enlarged pores on their T zone, the area that stretches across the forehead and down the nose and chin. The T-zone needs extra attention as spots may often break out in this area.

Combination:

Dry to Oily This skin type is also marked by oily skin in the T zone and dry, taut skin on the cheeks.

Step 2:

Develop a good daily Skincare regime.

There are 3 steps to basic daily skincare:

a. Cleansing

b. Toning

c. Moisturising

Let's break down each step. Cleansing does just that, it cleans your skin. By cleansing, you are removing any dirt, oil, bacteria and makeup.Toning does three things: it removes anything that your cleanser didn't already take care of, it restores the pH level of your skin and it prepares your skin to receive the moisturiser. Moisturising helps to seal in your skin's natural oils and it acts as a barrier between your skin and the environment. Even oily skin needs a moisturiser, but chose a light product. It is best to moisturize immediately after applying toner. Moisturising is something everyone of every skin type should do, including those with oil rich skin.

Besides these daily steps you should also, less frequently, exfoliate and use a facial mask.

Exfoliation allows you to remove dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin. The circular motion in which exfoliating should be performed also helps to stimulate your skin allowing oxygen to come to the surface. Exfoliating is a crucial step for those with either dry skin or those with dehydrated oil rich skin. Facial masks give you an extra boost to combat any concerns you might have for your skin. Just remember not to keep your mask on for more than 15 minutes because you could actually burn your skin. All masks should not be applied on the eyes (there are eye masks specifically formulated for this delicate area) and should be washed off with a warm face cloth.

So how often should you really be doing all of this ? Cleansing, toning and moisturising should happen twice daily; morning and night. You can exfoliate and give yourself a mask every one to two weeks depending on your skincare concerns.

Here are the steps you should follow for your day to day routine:

1. Cleanse

2. Tone

3. Moisturise

And here are the steps to be followed on the days you choose to also exfoliate and apply a mask:

1. Cleanse

2. Tone

3. Exfoliate

4. Tone

5. Mask

6. Tone

7. Moisturise

This may seem like a lot to do but your every day routine shouldn't take more than 3 minutes and your weekly routine no more than 20 minutes.

Step 3.

Choose appropriate skincare products for your skin type

Your beauty specialist will be able to advise you on the best products for your skin type and skin care routine.

Step 4.

Lifestyle impacts on the health and appearance of your skin, here are some lifestyle tips for enhancing your skin's appearance:

1. Avoid over exposure to the sun.

Sun damage leads to hyper-pigmentation (brown spots) which can develop into serious skin disease. Excessive exposure can also exaggerate and thicken fine lines. Use an SPF 15 or higher foundation or sun cream on all exposed skin, especially on your face.

2. Don't smoke

Easier said than done for smokers but please remember your skin is a large organ and it needs a lot of circulation. Smoking impairs circulation dramatically. That's why smokers' skin can look dull and gray

3. Get adequate rest and nutrition

Eat right and get plenty of rest. Keep vitamins such as C and E in your diet regime.

4. Protect yourself from stress - both emotional and environmental stress.

5. Touch your face less and wash your hands more!

It's very tempting to pick, poke, squeeze, and scratch in front of the mirror. But the more you traumatize the skin, the greater your risk of scarring. Apply treatment products and let them work.

6. Keep your makeup clean.

Replace the sponges in your compact on a regular basis.

7. Exercise.

Exercise promotes capillary functioning which can decrease premature aging. It also increases oxygen to the tissues which helps skin look young.

Celebrity Skin Care Products

If celebrities know one thing, it is how to stay beautiful. Just imagine the pressure they must be under to always look their best. In the case of the A-list actors and actresses, they can barely leave their homes without being photographed. Those photos end up on the covers of every magazine in every supermarket checkout in America. Poor Britney...

In recent times, a number of celebrities have launched their own skin care and cosmetic lines. It makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. Why not capitalize on the fame they have established in their respective careers? Smart celebrities have taken the endorsement scenario to another level entirely. Instead of endorsing existing products, many of them have simply launched their own lines.

Cindy Crawford is one such example. After a highly successful modeling career, Cindy dropped out of the modeling scene to settle down and start a family. A few years later, Cindy decided to capitalize on her name by launching a line of specialized skin care formulas. She partnered with the famous French cosmetic surgeon, Jean-Louis Sebagh, to create Meaningful Beauty. They offer a wide range of skin care products designed to reduce free radicals and stimulate the growth of collagen, both of which are necessary to fight the effects of aging. Well done, Cindy!

Fresh-faced freshmen, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, are everywhere these days. These girls have been in the entertainment industry since they were just a few months old, and they have build up a veritable cosmetic and fashion empire in recent years. These girls are highly influential with the "tween" crowd. They have a wonderfully fun line of cosmetics for young girls, that includes metallic mascara and sparkle applications that are crayon-like in their appearance. Smart kids, indeed!

Jessica Simpson has also started her own line of skin care products. After her recent television and movie endeavors, there is no doubt that she should be exploring her career options. Her line of skin care products is called Dessert Beauty, and is produced in conjunction with a fellow named Randi Shinder. This line is more focused on lotions and lip balms with scents like strawberry and vanilla bean. It's good to see that Jessica has plan B in effect!

A personal skin care program for you

Why is it that all of us cannot keep the skin we were born with. Well I've still got my skin but it has changed and, according to my mother, it has changed a lot. It would also need to have stretched a bit, well in my case stretched a lot. As we get older, things happen to our skin, like wrinkles. I have them but I am a man so I can get away with it. Unfortunately, ladies find it harder to get away with having a few wrinkles. As a man, I am not too bothered by a few wrinkles and as long as I keep my skin clean, I do not bother with it much and no one really notices.

What we do notice though is skin on women, and because many men are somehow genetically programmed to be uncaring and insensitive about your skin, you spend a great deal of time and effort to make your skin look good. Why is it then that men can get away with wrinkles but women cannot? Is there anything you can do about it? If you adopt a skin care program then this should help to affect how your skin looks and more importantly it will affect how you feel as well, and that is very important. You have to remember that the skin is the largest organ in your body and so by adopting a skincare program you are looking after yourself.

So what can you do about it? Well to start with after every shower even after you have dried yourself your skin is still damp and by applying moisturizer you are trapping moisture into your skin which is a great plus factor. Another one is to drink water and this hydration helps your skin as well. However, if you notice that even after this your skin is always dry and sometimes a little flakey, just visit your doctor to check things out. One other reason you should quickly visit is if there is a major change such as dark, (or lighter), skin patches and any changes or growth to moles you may have.

Get these checked out just to make sure you have no problems. One thing to watch out for is the effect the sun has on your skin. The sun is at its fiercest when it is highest, which is generally at midday, so just take care. Applying a good sunscreen helps, and another thing to take into consideration is that elastin, which is a substance in your skin, breaks down under strong sunlight. This can cause the skin to sag so just be careful. It is a pity about the effects of sunlight on skin as most of us feel much happier when exposed to sunlight.

Rather than buy every skincare product on the market there is a lot you can do to help your skin by developing your own personal skincare program. Healthy skin is helped by a healthy diet, and a healthy diet is usually a balanced diet containing fresh vegetables and fruit. Both of these have been found to contain antioxidants which can help your skin protect itself from day to day living. To get the best values from fruit and veg though it must be fresh or only lightly cooked.

Another important factor in skincare is skin hydration and this is helped by drinking a sensibly amount of water. I have seen it suggested that 4 to 8 cups a day is sensible but if you are drinking bottled mineral water check the chemical makeup of the water as some are high in sodium which means high salt levels. Do not fall into the trap that drinking 4 to 8 cups of coffee a day, (which is mainly water after all), is as good for you. Coffee contains plenty of caffeine which helps the body to dispose of water.

I had a great idea that I would drink beer instead of coffee as that is mainly water, but drinks containing alcohol, (including wine,) do not class as water either. It does not have to be bottled water either; tap water is fine as long as it is pure and clean. Not at bedtime though as drinking late at night means your body may retain this water causing your skin to stretch a little which is not something you want to happen.

Your skin also stretches when you become overweight and after a diet, and loosing weight, you will need to exercise to tone your skin into shape again. A younger person has more flexible skin but when you are older your skin is not as flexible and it becomes harder to tone your skin after loosing weight. The answer is not to try and put on weight in the first place but that is not always easy especially as we get older. However please try to keep weight gain off your skin care program as the two do not go together.

Whatever you decide to do, do some research and find out what will work best for you. One way of doing this is to talk to people selling skincare products in stores. Although their job is to try and sell you their product, they will still give you good advice. You could ask your friends as well, as some of them may be able to guide you in the right direction. Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

Do-It-Yourself Facial Skin Care

In a world of tight schedules, harmful pollution, high anxiety and mounting tension, your skin takes the toil, and it shows! Yet, all is not lost. With a little commitment to smooth, clear and attractive skin, you can maintain the natural beauty of your skin at home! Keep reading to get tips and simple at-home methods to maintain youthful skin and fight the signs of aging.

Following any exposure in the sun, a dry skin treatment of a good quality shielding lotion should be used to rehydrate and lock in the moisture into the deeper layers of the skin.

It is absolutely certain that beautiful skin cannot last without proper care. The adverse affects of the world we live in have the potential of making skin look old and tired even during the prime of youth. Therefore, it is essential to regularly and thoroughly clean your skin so as to keep it glowing with vitality. Besides cleansing and facials, massaging the skin regularly and properly will greatly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and tighten your skin.

Cleaning your Skin The first step in caring for your skin externally is to clean it properly. Perspiration, grease, dust, stale make-up, dirt and bacteria all collect on your skin and must be removed completely. Use cleansing cream, milk or lotion or just plain cold cream to clean your skin. Apply the cream on your face and neck and gently massage it in. Rub the cream on your face and neck in circular and upward motion for at least five minutes (duration also depends on the instructions provided with the cream you are using). Remove excessive cream with tissue, damp cotton wool or a small damp towel.

Next, tone your skin using skin freshener (mild), skin tonic (medium strength) or an astringent lotion (strong). Toning is important as it removes any remaining greasiness on your skin after the cleansing process is complete. It closes pores, refines the skin, and if you intend to use make up, it leaves a smooth clean texture which will hold foundation and powder much longer. Nourishing your skin is an essential part of any beauty routine. Dirt, dust, hot and cold weather, cosmetics and even sunlight all tend to dry out the skin, robbing it of moisture and oil.

Skin foods attempt to replenish nourishment to give skin its natural healthiness. It is not necessary to use a thick, heavy skin cream every night. If you do not like a greasy face when going to bed, simply choose a light, easy to absorb moisturizer which will disappear in minutes. Many of the newer liquid moisturizers fall into this category. Facial A facial is the quickest way of cleaning, reviving and refining faded skin, leaving the skin light, soft and glowing. A facial also does a thorough job of relaxing jangled nerves so that you emerge not only looking younger but also feeling fresher and more relaxed. A facial once every fortnight will ensure youthful and fresh skin for a long time.

The most luxurious way of getting a facial is to go to a beauty salon and sit back while experts do their job. If you do not have the time or cannot afford the luxury of regular salon treatments, you can give yourself a facial at home. Choose a time when you can be undisturbed and quiet. Get everything ready before you start so that you can relax and enjoy it.

Follow the routine below for a quick home-facial:

* Tie your hair away from the face and neck and use a headband to pull hair away you're your forehead.

* Cleanse your face and neck with cleansing milk and wipe off first with a facial tissue and then with a wet towel.

* Apply cream all over the face and blend it thoroughly - then massage your face and neck in an upward direction.

* Prepare a face-pack suited to your skin type and on a thoroughly clean face, spread a fairly thick layer avoiding the area of the mouth and a large circle round the eyes. Then lie on your back and keep the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes or till dry. Do not talk while the mask is on your face.

* When it is dry, wash your face and neck with cold water, keeping your eyes closed. Dry your skin and apply skin tonic.

* If you have an important date, use skin tonic after the facial, then apply moisturizer and make up.

Massaging your Skin Massaging your face is essential for youthful looking skin especially for the 40 and above. An effective way to counter wrinkles, massaging is a slow process and its results are obvious only if it is continued for a period of time. It is not a magic potion which can bring a change overnight and one has to be patient with it. However, there is no doubt that massage reduces unattractive fleshiness, tightens facial tissues and muscles and increases blood circulation.

Once you have lines and wrinkles, you can only get rid of them by plastic surgery. Massage and facial exercises can help prevent new lines from forming but cannot remove the old ones already on the face. By toning up the muscles and nourishing them, you can prevent new lines and wrinkles from forming. Remember, whether you have a lumpy, flabby, withered or sallow skin, your face can regain the appearance of youth under the action of your own fingers. Lines and wrinkles usually appear on the forehead, temples, eyes, nose, cheeks, chin and mouth.

Massage is effective only if the skin is clear. Do not forget to remove all traces of make-up otherwise skin pores will be blocked by particles of dirt. All blackheads should be removed. If the skin is oily, then remove oiliness by applying cleansing milk. Fresh lemon juice is also very effective in removing excess oiliness. If skin is dry, use a good moisturizer before massaging it. If the skin is oily, it is advisable to use some astringent lotion. Apply Vitamin E cream before a massage, but the quantity of this cream should be enough only to give sufficient greasiness to the skin so that the hands and fingers move smoothly on the face.

After having cleaned the skin, press it with light but firm fingers, putting a little pressure while applying a good cream. Trained fingers can hold the skin firmly and apply even pressure. With the passage of time, visible defects like wrinkles, flabbiness and dead cells are greatly reduced and a fresh and young look is restored. Massage should start from the neck upwards and end at the forehead or temples because all veins and tissues get an increased blood supply by this process. The skin around the eyes is delicate. So it is advisable to apply cream on this part without pressing it. Cream takes 15 to 20 minutes to get absorbed by the skin, so massage should continue that long. Wipe off extra cream with a cotton wool swab soaked in water (preferably rose water).

The best time to massage the face is before going to bed.

Art of Massaging

* Slow Massage -

This is the most common method of massage. The secret is to massage slowly and patting/vibrating the skin. Using the fleshy part of your finger tips, press the skin lightly but firmly. The process starts at the base of the neck at a slow speed. The speed increases as the fingers move upwards. Stroking gives rest to the nerves and the vibration is useful in subduing pain that might be caused by massaging.

* Fast Massage -

The front half of both the palms are used to massage at speed, taking care to make a circular motion upwards.

* Pressure Massage -

This is a method when pressure is applied by finger-tips. This is effective for removing pouches beneath eyes.

* Stroking Massage -

Chubby cheeks are stroked with the tips of fingers. If the nose is broad, strokes are applied from the nose to the temples on both sides.

* Pinching Massage -

the skin is held, as in pincers, between the thumb and fingers. Such a massage is effective for a double chin and wrinkles on the jaw.

* Friction Massage -

The movement requires pressure on the skin while it is being moved over the underlying structures. Fingers or palms are employed in this movement. Hard movements are usually employed on the scalp while light movements are used on the face especially on the neck.

* Piano Playing Movements -

This exercise develops facial muscles and makes them firm. It should be done on the entire face, especially the cheek area, with your fingers. The movements must be supple yet brisk.
