Have you ever examined the ingredients listed on the labels of your cosmetics or other skin care products? Do you know what those ingredients are?
What you may not realize is that many of the skin care products and cosmetics you are buying contain ingredients that are not only harmful to your skin, but also to your long term health. Many of these ingredients are known carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and are used by the cosmetic industry simply because they are cheap!
Harmful Ingredients Commonly Found in Skin Care Products and Cosmetics
The following are just some of the synthetic chemicals that have been identified by scientific studies to be harmful to our health. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS) Often described as being "derived from coconut" to disguise their toxic nature, these chemicals are commonly used in shampoos, toothpaste, foaming facial and body cleansers and bubble bath.
SLS and ALS can cause severe skin irritation, and are easily absorbed into the body, building up in the brain, heart, lungs and liver, leading to potential long term health problems. SLS and ALS may also cause cataracts, and prevent children's eyes from developing properly.
Propylene Glycol Found in many beauty creams, cosmetics and cleansers, Propylene Glycol can cause skin rashes and contact dermatitis, and has been shown to cause damage to the kidneys and liver.
Isopropyl Alcohol Alcohol is used as a solvent in many skin care products. It causes skin irritation and strips the skin of its natural acid mantle, promoting the growth of bacteria, moulds and viruses. It may also cause premature ageing of skin.
DEA (Diethanolamine), TEA (Triethanolamine) and MEA (Monoethanolamine) These substances are harsh solvents and detergents that are used in cosmetics and face and body creams as an emollient. They can cause allergic reactions, and long term use of DEA-based products (such as Cocamide DEA) have been linked to an increase in the incidence of liver and kidney cancer. Aluminum A common ingredient in antiperspirants, aluminum has been linked to Alzheimer's Disease.
Mineral Oil Derived from petroleum (crude oil), mineral oil is commonly found as a main ingredient of face and body creams and cosmetics. Baby oil is 100% mineral oil! It coats the skin like a plastic film, clogging pores and stopping the skin from eliminating toxins, which can lead to acne and other skin disorders. Other petroleum based ingredients include paraffin wax, paraffin oil and petrolatum. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Used as a thickener in skin care products and cosmetics, PEGs interfere with the skin's natural moisture balance, causing an increase in ageing and leaving the skin vulnerable to bacteria.
Talc Talc is a soft mineral used in talcum powders and cosmetic powders. Scientific studies have shown that routine application of talcum powder to the genital area is linked with a three-to-fourfold increase in the development of ovarian cancer. Inhaling cosmetic powders containing talc may also be harmful to long term health.
How To Avoid These Toxins Examine the labels of your cosmetics and skin care products carefully, and learn to recognize ingredients that are harmful to your skin and to your health. Many web sites have lists of potentially harmful ingredients in addition to those shown above (e.g. Environmental Working Group). Don't be fooled by the words 'natural' or 'organic' on the front of the label. Many products contain at least one or two natural or organic ingredients, but they may also contain harmful synthetic chemicals as well. Whenever possible, choose products with 100% natural ingredients such as essential oils and herbs. Your skin will love you for it!
As always, before you attempt to self medicate or try a new health regimen or program we suggest you retain the services of a qualified health care professional.
Do I Need to Stop My Acne Skin Care Regimen During Pregnancy?
Pregnancy usually brings along with it a host of medical concerns which prompt behavioral and lifestyle changes. It is common knowledge that pregnant women should avoid smoking and drinking, not to mention some excessively physical activities. But there are also a host of other medicines and procedures which should be avoided during pregnancy. So, the question is, how does pregnancy affect acne skin care regimens?
Sensible Weight-Loss - Losing weight is one of the most popular New Year's resolutions each year. We all start with great intentions but after a few weeks, we fall back into our usual unhealthy lifestyle and the weight we did lose creeps back on.
For those of us that have used the products, the medicine packaging picturing a pregnant woman with an 'X' over her sent a strong message that they should not be used if you are, or might become pregnant.
Many acne medicines are quite explicit about the fact that you should not use them during pregnancy. Roaccutane and Accutane are certainly among these. There are other medicines, such as Tetracycline tablets and topical retinoids such as Tretinoin and Adapalene which can have detrimental effects on the bones and teeth of developing fetuses.
While these medicines should clearly be avoided because of the detrimental effects they have on your baby, there are other medicines which should potentially be stopped simply because they are no longer appropriate when pregnant. Pregnancy is often associated with a period of drier than normal skin. As a result, a number of acne medicines which are designed specifically to dry out the skin, namely benzoyl peroxide cream or gel may no longer be appropriate.
But does this mean that there are no acne skin care regimens that can be followed? Absolutely not. There are in fact a number of milder and often natural solutions which can contribute to healthier acne free skin which either have no, or even positive effects on your child. To replace harsh creams or gels designed to dry out the skin, an excellent alternative is tea tree oil. A milder facial wash can also provide the cleansing effect of an acne wash without over-drying your skin, which is naturally drier due to pregnancy. But because you may be giving up some of the acne fighting power by switching over to a milder wash, it is a good idea to supplement your acne fighting regimen with some natural clay masks such as Kaolin and Bentonite which will absorb oil and clear blocked pores naturally.
The second avenue through which pregnant women can clear up their skin while positively affecting the health of the child, is through their diet. By consuming higher quantities of raw vegetables, whose antioxidant properties serve to take free radicals (also referred to as bacteria) out of your system, you can cut down on the amount of bacteria released through your pores. In addition, by cutting back on the quantity of sugars and refined carbohydrates that you eat, you will naturally cut down on the amount of sebum or oil that your body produces. This will keep your pores clearer and allow the bacteria which passes through your pores to come out cleanly and without causing infection and acne. These approaches, in addition to providing you with clearer skin, are a safe and healthy alternative to acne fighting while simultaneously improving the health of your child.

Skin Care Trends for 2006
Skin care has certainly been in the news during 2005. The increasing concern of retaining youthful looking skin has led to skin care companies developing skin care products that include all kinds of exotic ingredients supposedly being able to reduce lines and wrinkles on your face, eliminate age spots and other blemishes, hydrate, smooth and tone your skin as well as making various other amazing claims.
These reports have led to a 'natural' skin care ingredient boom right across the skin care industry and increasingly we see advertisements promoting natural skin care products.
Toward the end of 2005 however, buyers have been realising that natural skin care products may not necessarily be all-natural skin care products and are starting to doubt the validity of advertisements promoting their skin care products as being natural.Further, the men's skin care market has been more strongly targeted with many well-known brands creating and promoting a skin care range specific for men.
So what can we expect in 2006?
I believe, that the above trends will continue during this year and will intensify in certain areas. These areas include:
* An increased focus on Men's skin care
* More anti-aging 'miracle' products
* Increased focus on promoting so called 'natural' skin care products
* An increased 'buyer be ware' attitude from consumers about just how natural the promoted skin care products are, and
* An increase of scepticism toward the promotion of natural in respect to skin care products by manufacturers.
I see the manufacturing of skin care products to be divided into three types of manufacturers:
1. Traditional Skin Care Manufacturers
These produce skin care products that will provide good results, but these products are not advertised to be natural, organic or anything other than skin care products. Their products include emulsifiers, preservatives and possibly potentially harmful ingredients, but they do work and customers do get results.
2. Jump on the Bandwagon Manufacturers
These are manufacturers market their products as being natural and actually
do include natural ingredients or at least naturally derived concentrates
together with other ingredients. They will promote these products as
being natural and will attract buyers who are concerned about what they
are putting on their skin and subsequently into their body.
This category contains another type of manufacturer, I call it the Psydo-Natural manufacturer. This type uses only natural ingredients, but does not use these ingredients in their natural state. That is, they will not always use traditionally made herbal extracts, but will use isolated, active ingredients from herbs or essential oils in their products.
The problem with this type of product is that the ingredients are no longer complete, they are 'out of balance' and as a result could cause potential health concerns. This has been explained in another article called 'Natural, All Natural, Holistically-Natural or Pseudo-natural - that is the question'.
3. Holistic Manufacturers
This third type of manufacturer of natural skin care products are manufacturers that have resolved to provide purely natural skin care products to their clients and are dedicated to use holistically, natural ingredients to produce truly natural skin care products. They use pure essential oils, traditionally made herbal extracts, and follow the philosophies of natural medical practices such as herbal medicine and naturopathy.
The next 12 months or so will see consumers becoming more and more aware of what is truly natural and what is not. The Internet is a great source for gathering such information and women especially will start to research skin care products in ever increasing detail to find the type of products they prefer.
Men will start to become more aware of their skin's needs and will increasingly start to follow similar skin care regimes as women. However, I think it will take men a little longer to start thinking about the purity of their skin care. They will probably leave it up to their spouses to select their skin care range for them.

Organic skin care products -Are they really different?
The world is realizing that not only is it necessary to eat organically but also to use organic skin care products to feed their skin. Many people have asked the very same question regarding organic foods versus toxic chemical laden foods. And the answer is a resounding "yes". People are finding out that there is indeed a difference in the food they eat. And feeding your skin with organic skin care products will make a difference as well. Using organic body care products will help to eliminate toxic chemicals from your body. This is essential to a healthy organic lifestyle. Your skin absorbs the toxic chemicals that are placed in the skin care products.
Many people are taking great care to eat organically but do not realize that their skin care products are guilty of continuing to put toxic chemicals into their bodies. Some of the non-organic skin care product additives to beware of include dimethicone, carbomer 941, peg 50 almond glycerides, sodium laureth sulfosuccinate, TEA, DMDM hydantoin, imidiazolidinyl urea, BHT, FD & C Yellow No. 6, and fragrance. These are just a few of the chemicals that have been linked with health problems. Some of these toxins are potential carcinogens.
When purchasing skin care be sure to read the labels and if you can't remember all the toxic chemical names that you read about then keep in mind that most of the words you can barely pronounce are chemicals. Look for ingredients you are familiar with such as aloe or avocado. Again take the time to learn about these harmful synthetic chemicals and do everything in your power to avoid them including but not limited to eating organic food, and using organic skin care.

When it comes to your skin and hair, winter can do a number on them! Cold temperatures and low humidity can really make your skin dry and cracked and your hair dull and lifeless. Fortunately, there's plenty of natural remedies you can use to bring life back into your dull winter skin and hair.
They are known to be highly toxic and have caused rashes and allergic reactions. Recent scientific studies in the UK found a strong link between the use of parabens and the increasing rate of breast cancer in women. Researchers found a high concentration of parabens in 90% of breast tumors tested.
Your hands need extra protection in the winter especially since the skin there is very thin. Wearing gloves when you go outside will help protect your hands from the harsh elements. After washing your hands, make sure you dry them thoroughly and use a good hand cream.
Winter can be very drying on your skin and your elbows, knees and feet can get forgotten underneath all that winter gear. Clothing and winter footgear can cause friction that creates a buildup of thick skin. A good scrubbing with a natural lofah sponge, followed by a rich cream will remove any problems in these areas.
Most people don't think about the sun during winter, but sun protection is very important even in January. The sun can reflect off of the snow and ice so if you are going to be engaging in outdoor activities it is a good idea to wear sunscreen on any skin that will be exposed.
Give your skin a lift with beans - finely ground until powder-like, beans make a great cleanser for your face and body: just add the powdered beans to your favorite cleanser and massage into damp skin. Dry beans are rich in protein, potassium and iron, all good ingredients for healthy skin.
Your lips can get chapped all year long, but winter is really harsh on this sensitive skin. Carry chapstick with you at all times and reapply often. Avoid licking you lips even when they feel dry as this will cause them to get chapped and crack - use lip balm instead. If you do get badly chapped lips, apply Vaseline intensive care at night.
Your hair can suffer in winter just as bad as your skin. Low humidity and frigid winds can cause our hair to become dry so using a rich, deep hair conditioner is important to restore moisture to your hair. If you really want to give your hair a boost, wash it with baking soda. This will remove residues from hairstyling products, making your hair clean and shiny. And while you have the baking soda out, you can also use it for a deodorant, a bath powder and a tooth whitener.
Maple syrup is great on pancakes but it can also help revitalize your hair and skin. Use it as a facial mask or a hair conditions. It may be sticky but maple syrup is one of the best natural moisturizers and can give your skin and hair what it needs in winter. For best results, make sure you look for syrup marked 100% pure.
Give your skin some bacteria fighting help with citrus fruit and tea tree oil. Cirtus fruits contain citric acid, which kills bacteria on the skin and the fresh scent is a known energizer. Your hair can benefit from citrus too - just rinse it with lemon juice mixed with water to revive dull tired hair. Tea tree oil has very powerful antibacterial and antiviral qualities, and it's easily absorbed by the skin. It's great any time of year but especially in winter!
