Skin Care - Healthy skin with Herbs and Alternative Health Products.

OUR SKIN IS A GIFT from God. It comes in a sumptuous spectrum of colors. From butterscotch to bronze to blackberry, people of color all over the world are naturally dipped in distinctive hues. What's so special about the rich colors of our skin? We've been blessed from birth with an extra measure of protection against lines and wrinkles. However, our skin is also prone to certain kinds of scarring, irritations and other conditions, some of which stem from too much sun exposure.

When selecting the proper facial cleanser, it is important to be aware of the condition that your skin is currently in so that you use products suitable to your particular skin type.

To avoid harmful rays, always wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. When used correctly, it can block ultraviolet rays and reduce your chance of getting serious burns and wrinkles. To maintain beautiful skin and a radiant glow, follow a healthy skin-care regimen. Beautiful skin means healthy skin, and it can be yours by simply adopting an easy skin-care ritual. The basic steps to a flawless face consist of two key elements: cleansing and moisturizing on a regular basis. Cleansing removes impurities from the skin's surface and encourages a more radiant appearance.

The basic three skin types are dry, normal /combination and oily. Keep in mind that your skin type could change and may be affected by the season or the climate where you live. If this happens, alter the products that you are using to suit your needs. Those with dry skin usually have tiny pores and an ashy or dull appearance with some flaking on the skin's surface. It's best to pick a mild soap or cleanser with an off base and a low-to-no alcohol toner to prevent excess dryness.

Normal/combination skin can be frustrating because you're dealing with dryness on the cheeks and oil in the T-zone area, which includes the forehead, nose and chin. Reduce the oil in the T-zone area by washing with products that contain glycerin, which draws moisture to the skin. Follow up with an astringent to keep the oil in the affected areas under control.

What makes winter weather so damaging to skin? Air. Outside it's less humid; inside it's hot and dry. "This makes the water inside our skin cells evaporate," Hood explains. The result is rough, chapped, windblown skin that looks like you spent your vacation crossing the desert. But winter weather doesn't mean you've got to sit back and take it. You don't have to watch (and scratch), helpless, as your skin itches and flakes.

Skin Care Problems - Lisa's Story

Skin Care Problems and Solutions

Skin care problems, like sagging skin, wrinkles, brown spots, acne, rosacea, dry skin, or aging skin can affect your appearance and how others think about you. More importantly, it can affect how you think about yourself. Here are some solutions to those problems.

Lisa used to love going out on the town with friends every once in a while. It sure was a great stress reducer. But, then, Lisa started to experience skin problems, like skin blemishes (possibly from all that sun exposure earlier in life) and some wrinkles around the eyes (you can't stop aging you know) and elsewhere. It seemed like co-workers and others didn't talk to Lisa the same anymore and they didn't want to go out with her as much. What the heck was happening here?

Skin Care Makeover and More

Her doctor was very sympathetic, but mentioned that in order for her to improve how she looked and felt, some actions had to be taken. Taking better care of her skin, losing some weight, and eating better would help. Lisa mentioned that dressing better might also be a good idea, since really successful women always looked sharp in every way. These steps just might do it.After some effort and time, it worked. She got her life back, and like magic, people started noticing a new women. A new Lisa with radiant, clear, smooth looking skin, an attractive figure, and wearing a new sharp outfit, emerged.

The Result

Success at work and in her whole life followed. It all started with improving the look on her face using advanced skin care products. Everything else amazingly flowed from that point onwards.

If you like the look of the person you look at every day in the mirror, it will affect your energy level and what you'll be able to accomplish in the rest of your life. Don't give up on yourself. If you have problems, see a doctor if needed and get help. Pray also, because God does want to assist you, but you have to ask. Lisa's story is only an example, but is a carbon copy of similar stories that are very common in today's society.

If you need some advice about weight loss or psychological distress, see your doctor. If you need advice about effective skin care treatments, see your dermatologist, or visit for some honest answers.

Skin Care Treatments for Rejuvenating Aging Skin

We all wonder if there really is a "face lift in a jar" and, if so, what is it and where can I get some- right now! Of course, we all would love such a simple remedy that can miraculously provide us with the fountain of youth right in our own little pot of face cream. But, unfortunately, the truth of the matter is a bit more complicated than a face lift miracle in a jar.

What Happens to So Many People

Lisa's confidence dropped quickly and so did her overall looks. She stopped dressing smartly and professionally. She stopped exercising and for some reason, didn't care what she ate either. Within a few months, Lisa started to feel quite ill and started missing work, not to mention how older she looked. What was she to do? A trip to her doctor was a good starting point.

There are a variety of signs of aging that we see occur as the years march along that can include-(just to name just a few)- sun damage, dry, scaly skin, dark age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, mottled skin tone, enlarged pores, sagging facial skin, ruddy skin texture, loss of skin elasticity and a decrease in the skin's healing abilities. Obviously, even if you have just a few of these aging skin symptoms, don't you think it is rather unlikely that just one simple, little face cream- the miracle in a jar- is going to effectively address such a range of issues? A magic wand, maybe, but who has one of those?

But don't despair, effective skin rejuvenation is possible with accurate information and a well thought out strategy. The first and foremost in creating an effective skin rejuvenation regime is to use clinically proven anti-aging skin care treatments. Although the market is saturated with products that claim to banish wrinkles forever, firm sagging skin and make those age spots just up and disappear right before your very eyes; there are in actuality, only a handful of anti-aging treatments that have been independently clinically proven to be effective.

Start your skin rejuvenation regime with clinically proven skin care treatments. For example, some of the more popular favorites are Vitamin A-(better known as retinol), glycolic acid- (an alpha hydroxy acid, AHA), Vitamin C Ester, and Vitamin K. The trick is to make sure that the active ingredient(s) in products you select have incorporated an appropriate percentage of the anti-aging treatment.

If you review the ingredient list and the product only has a 1% concentration of glycolic acid, then why bother? An effective concentration of glycolic acid should be at least 8%. (Although, any product with a concentration of glycolic acid over 15% should only be administered by a professional, you don't want to harm your skin!) The Vitamin A, retinol products should have at least a .15% concentration. The strongest over the counter retinol product that you can buy without a prescription is 1%. The higher concentrations of both glycolic acid and retinol can be rather strong so start very, very slowly so your skin has a chance to get use to them.

Just these two skin care treatments can accomplish a great deal in rejuvenating aging skin including exfoliating dead skin cells, stimulating skin cell repair, encouraging new skin cell growth, improving fine lines and wrinkles, stimulating collagen production, improving skin tone and texture, decreasing enlarged pores and can actually significantly improve acne or outbreaks of blemishes. Not bad for beginning a new skin rejuvenation regime.

Layering different anti-aging treatments is also an important strategy to use if you want to achieve significant results. Adding a powerful antioxidant such as a stable form of Vitamin C Ester will help protect the skin from further damage and improve the skin's healing ability. A "Super" Vitamin K product is well known for improving those dark circles under the eyes and is helpful is reducing the redness from broken capillaries that can give the skin a red, ruddy appearance. Although DMAE hasn't been clinically proven to firm sagging skim, preliminary studies have been quite promising. Hydroquinone in concentrations of 1% to 2% can be used to bleach those stubborn age spots that can blossom with wild abandon as we age.

There are simply hundreds of combinations for skin care treatments that can be tailored to address your own aging skin care needs so don't be afraid to experiment a little bit to find the best combination that works for you!

Hyaluronic Acid - The Latest Craze In "Natural" Skin Care

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is making news. Once again the skin care industry is promoting the latest and greatest anti-aging ingredient - Hyaluronic Acid as the anti-aging ingredient to reverse the aging clock.So what is Hyaluronic acid? How does it work? Does it work as an anti-aging product for your skin? If so, is hyaluronic acid safe to use or are there site effects? What forms of hyaluronic acid are being promoted to consumers of 'natural' skin care products?

Let's start out by looking at what hyaluronic acid actually is.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring biopolymer, which serves important biological functions in bacteria and higher animals including humans. Naturally occurring, hyaluronic acid may be found in the tissue of higher animals, in particular as intercellular space filler. HA is found in greatest concentrations in the vitreous humour of the eye and in the synovial fluid of articular joints, but is also found in the skin, connective tissue and elsewhere in the body.

Hyaluronic acid was made 'famous' by an ABC News report in which Connie Chung visited a Japanese village by the name of Yuzurihara. She found that the people there were living longer, looked younger, and were more flexible and active than their western counterparts. These Japanese villagers, in their 80s and 90s, have smooth wrinkle-less skin, a full head of hair and apparently no need for glasses.

So what is it, that allows these Japanese to be so much more youthful, lead active, productive lives at their advanced age, where as in western countries most people in their 80s and beyond are in old-age homes? The conclusion drawn in the ABC report was that these people ate 'sticky vegetables' and that this factor was the secret to their apparent youth. In addition, the oestrogen-like molecules in their diet, fermented forms of soy in miso paste and tofu, seem to play an important role. These molecules, along with natural oestrogen, send a signal to the fibroblast cells to make more hyaluronic acid. But is this the whole answer? - I don't think so, but I'll get to this a little later.

Next, let's look at what Hyaluronic acid does.

According to scientific research by a variety of Universities and researchers, hyaluronic acid is used in the human body to cushion and lubricate joints, eyes, the skin, and heart valves (see for an in-depth look at all the different diseases, syndromes and conditions). Some treatments, which involve the use of hyaluronic acid include: treatment for osteoarthritis and other joint problems, as well as a range of eye disorders, retinal detachment, and some cardiovascular disorders.

However, it is in the anti-aging effect on the skin that we are focusing on in this article and the effect hyaluronic acid seems to have on the skin is at the level of promoting the formation of collagen. These are the fibres that firm the skin. Now, hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down collagen fibres, is produced by free radicals and UV radiation.

These factors breaks down fibres of collagen can cause premature wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Focusing on hyaluronic acid, it would seem reasonable therefore, that reducing the free radicals is a major key to reducing the hyaluronidase enzyme and secondly to promote normal levels of hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Plant substances known as bioflavonoids, contained in foods such as grape seed extract, blueberry, cranberry, citrus bioflavonoids and milk thistle, etc., inhibit the production of hyaluronidase, which helps to achieve the first aim of reducing the free radicals. In addition, reducing processed foods from our diet, increasing the level of exercise and living a more balanced life style will help in promoting natural levels of hyaluronic acid in our system, not just in the skin.

When considering injecting hyaluronic acid into the skin to treat fine lines and wrinkles, we are once again loosing sight of the holistic approach to treating our bodies and thus run a serious risk of introducing factors, which may lead to side effects or other health problems. Further, we also run the risk of creating an imbalance in the chemical composition of the skin and who knows what possible problems await us as a result.

Some known side effects of hyaluronic acid injection therapy for aging skin include:

* swelling
* infection
* redness
* tenderness
* acne
* lumps
* tissue hardening
* unknown risks when used in combination with collagen

These side effects are serious enough to reconsider using injection therapy of hyaluronic acid as an anti-aging treatment for the skin. Remember too, that the people in the Japanese village do not use injection therapy... They life an holistic life style incorporating unprocessed foods and physical activity together with a balanced mind-set and life style.

So where can you get a holistic source of hyaluronic acid from?

There are a couple of ways. The first is from "starchy root vegetables" such as the ones mentioned by the village doctor in the ABC report which include: Satsumaimo, a type of sweet potato; Satoimo, a sticky white potato; Konyaku, a gelatinous root vegetable concoction; and Imoji, a potato root. These vegetables help the cells of the body to thrive and retain moisture. Further, they keep joints lubricated, protect the retina of the eye and keep the skin smooth and elastic by promoting collagen.

Another source of hyaluronic acid, for non-vegetarians, is to eat animal parts known to contain a lot of hyaluronic acid. You could make a broth from fish bones. That is, once you've taken off the fillets, boil the rest of the fish, including their head and make a fish stock. Similarly, you can make a meat broth using animal joints, sinews and tendons, then adding a few root and other vegetables to create a healthy, nourishing soup.

In conclusion, at Wildcrafted Herbal Products we do not believe that adding isolated ingredients in elevated concentrations to our natural skin care products is a preferred option. Rather, using a holistically natural approach to skin care and for that matter health care is a far more preferable option.

Skin care is as much about taking care of your skin as it is taking responsibility and care of your overall health and wellbeing. Your skin is not an isolated part of your body and should not be treated as such. Again I would like to remind you of the Japanese villagers - they do not inject themselves with hyaluronic acid, they do not use hyaluronic acid in isolation, they do however life a healthy, active and mostly balanced life style.

Antiaging skin care

'Antiaging skin care' is a very poplar concept in today's world. Today everyone wants to hide their age using antiaging skin care procedures (and a number of people are successful too). However antiaging skin care is not achieved by any magic potion. 'Antiaging skin care' is about discipline. It is about being proactive. Antiaging skin care is retarding the ageing process. Here are a few tips for proactive antiaging skin care:

1. Maintain healthy eating habits: A well balanced diet is the key to maintaining a proper body metabolism. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables (raw), they are the best source of fibre and have a very refreshing effect on your body. Avoid oily and fatty food; not only do they lack in essential nutrients but also cause obesity and other diseases which aid the aging process

2. Beat stress: This is probably the most important antiaging skin care measure. Stress disturbs the body metabolism and accelerates the aging process. Sleep, exercise and a relaxing bath, are all good ways of beating stress. Aroma-therapy is also known to bust stress.

3. Drink a lot of water: Antiaging skin care can't be any simpler than this. Water helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, hence keeping it clean and making it less prone to disease. Around 8 glasses of water (per day) is recommended by all doctors.

4. Regular exercise is a wonderful antiaging skin care procedure. Besides toning your muscles, it also helps in cleaning the skin by flushing out the toxins in the form of sweat. Exercise should be followed by a warm shower in order to completely remove the toxins.

5. Avoid the use of strong, chemical based products on your skin. Natural skin care products are a good option. Use of organic skin care products (home made or commercial) can be a very effective antiaging skin care measure.

6. Do not overuse skin care products. Excessive and harsh application, both are harmful.

7. Do not ignore skin disorders; it can lead to permanent skin damage. Try over the counter medication and if that doesn't help, immediately visit your dermatologist and seek his/her advice.

8. Vitamin C based skin care products are very popular means of antiaging skin care. However, these seem to oxidise very quickly (which makes them harmful for the skin). So store them properly. If the product turns Yellowish brown, it means that vitamin c has oxidised and the prodct is no longer suitable for use.

9. Protect your skin against UV radiation ; UV rays are known to speed up the aging process. So, a good sunscreen lotion should be a part of your antiaging skin care routine.

All about Facial skin care

'Facial skin care' is more a matter of discipline than anything else. A facial skin care routine is what you need (and you need to follow the facial skin care routine with complete seriousness). So let's check what comprises an effective facial skin care routine. Well, very simply, a facial skin care routine can follow the following

4 steps:

 Cleansing

 Toning

 Exfoliating

 Moisturising

Cleansing is the first thing in facial skin care routine. Cleansing helps in removing dust, pollutants, grease and extra oil from your skin, thereby preventing damage to your skin. Just spot your face and neck with a good cleansing lotion or cream and gently massage it into your skin using upward strokes. Use a soft face tissue or cotton wool to wipe your face in a gentle patting fashion (do not rub).

Cleansing should be done at least twice a day i.e. morning (as part of complete facial skin care routine) and evening (on a standalone basis). Water soluble cleansers are the best for inclusion in your facial skin care routine. Toning is the next in a facial skin care routine. However, this is the optional part of the facial skin care routine. Mostly, proper cleansing can compensate for toning. Toning helps remove all traces of dirt, grease and excess cleanser. Instead of making it part of your daily facial skin care routine, you can using toning occasionally i.e. when you have been exposed to particularly harsh environment/pollution.

However, oily skin care procedures should not lead to complete removal of oil. 'Oily skin care' starts with the use of a cleanser. However, not all cleansers will work. You need a cleanser which contains salicylic acid i.e. a beta-hydroxy acid that retards the rate of sebum production. Cleansing should be done twice a day (and even more in hot and humid conditions).

Exfoliation is again, kind of, optional step in everyday routine for facial skin care. However, exfoliation is necessary at least once a week (or twice, depending on the skin type and the environmental conditions). Exfoliation finds its place in facial skin care routine because of the natural tendency of skin to replenish the skin cells every 3 or 4 weeks. As a facial skin care technique, exfoliation helps in removing the dead skin cells that block the pores, thus assisting the skin in the natural process. However, excessive or harsh exfoliation can cause damage to your skin; so you need to balance it out.

The next thing in facial skin care is moisturising. In fact, moisturising is the most important part of facial skin care routine. Moisturisers prevent your skin from getting dry. Dry skin is really undesirable since it cause the upper layer skin to break, leading to dead skin cells. Again, use light upward strokes to make the moisturiser more effective. Moisturisers work the best when applied on warm and damp skin. So do not try to remove all the moisture in the previous steps of facial skin care routine.

Besides the normal facial skin care routine, you should also exercise the following for facial skin care:

 Use proper make-up remover instead of just washing it away

 Pay heed to your skin type and the environment, when choosing facial skin care products.

 Before you start using a new facial skin care product, test it by applying it on a short patch of skin e.g. ear lobes.

 Never rub your skin too hard.

 Use sunscreen lotions for protection against sun. Many skin care tips. Also learn about face masks.

Oily skin care

To start the discussion on oily skin care, it's imperative to first understand the cause behind oily skin. Put simply, oily skin is a result of excessive production of sebum (an oily substance that is naturally produced by skin). As is known to everyone, excess of everything is bad; so excessive sebum is bad too. It leads to clogging of skin pores, resulting in accumulation of dead cells and hence formation of pimples/acne. Moreover, oily skin spoils your looks too. So, 'oily skin care' is as important as the 'skin care' for other types of skin. The basic aim of 'oily skin care' is the removal of excessive sebum or oil from the skin.

Most of the oily skin care products are oil-free; however, it is always good to check the ingredients of the product, before you actually buy it. This is especially important if a product is marked as 'suitable for all skin types', instead of 'oily skin care product'. 'Oily skin care' is also dependent on the degree of oiliness, if you aren't too oily, so some of these 'suitable for all'- type of products might be work for you too. For extremely oily skin, only oily skin care products are suitable. Your oily skin care routine can include an alcohol based toner (for an extremely oily skin). This can be the second step in your oily skin care routine i.e. just after cleansing. However, excessive toning can harm your skin.

The next step in your oily skin care routine can be a mild moisturiser. Again, the degree of oiliness of your skin will determine whether you need to include this in your oily skin care routine. If you do decide to include a moisturiser, be sure to use one that is oil-free, wax-free and lipid-free. You could also use a clay mask (say once a week) as an oily skin care measure.

As far as the oily skin care products go, you might need to try out a few before you arrive at the one that is really suitable for your skin. In case these measures don't give you the desired result, consult a good dermatologist for advice. He could prescribe stronger oily skin care products like vitamin A creams, retinoids, sulphur creams etc , which can help counter the problems of oily skin.
