Health Care Tips

Consumers are turning to wholesome and therapeutic elements found in Mother Nature for skin care therapies and beauty treatments. There is a growing concern that there are potentially harmful effects associated with the long term use of synthetic chemicals found in many formulas.
To name a few - 1,4-dioxane, a cancer causing contaminant found in cosmetic products; silicone emollients which coat the skin and trap anything beneath it - not allowing the skin to breathe; formaldehyde, cancer-causing vapor that can cause allergies, irritations to eyes, nose and throat, headaches and chronic fatigue.
Skin is a "dynamic tissue" and up to 60% of the skin products that are applied are absorbed into our bloodstream! Discovering the benefits of natural and organic herbal skin care may be the answer
In the last few years many manufacturers have begun to add vitamins and antioxidants to their formulas. Look for vitamin A to assist in preventing roughness and dryness. C and E are the simplest forms of antioxidants and will help in the prevention of sun damage and in the fight against premature wrinkles.
A study recently showed that applying topical Vitamin C, 15 to 30 minutes after UV exposure, sunburn cells decreased and repair to the damage had begun. The one problem of this vitamin is that it is unstable when left open to the air. Research is continuing to optimize this but one consistent way is to use an anhydrous (no water) base cream.
Vitamin D interacts with sunlight to form in our bodies and is considered an antioxidant and an anticarcinogen. Although it can be toxic in large amounts, sunbathing won't result in an overdose. Aloe vera is a soothing plant and the base of many natural cleansing formulas, offering exfoliation, moisturizing and protection. This "miracle" plant dates back to the time of Cleopatra but was lost for years. It was rediscovered during the Second World War when used for treating burn victims. It is now used as an ingredient that will help with antiaging, in the healing of wounds and sun damaged tissue. Apply aloe gel several times a day and watch the redness of sunburn disappear without peeling.
Topical use of a cream containing 0.5 percent aloe vera extract three times a day for four weeks shows a high cure rate of lesions in psoriasis patients. Further research suggests that this plant may have a mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect with no known adverse reactions. Eczema can be helped with aloe vera which provides soothing, cleansing and healing.
A great idea in using natural formulas is to do-it-yourself. To prepare an aloe vera home recipe, take the slippery part from inside the plant, puree in a blender and keep refrigerated. Apply a coat of the gel for 5 minutes and rinse. Over time watch for spots, acne and scars to disappear.
Endangered plant and animal species around the world were being identified and quickly outlawed for hunting and harvesting. The use of products derived from these sources was banned. The endangered sperm whale produced waxes that were greatly valued for their function in cosmetics. During the 60's and 70's a liquid wax (jojoba oil) found in the deserts of California, Arizona and Mexico was discovered by scientists. It not only replaced the prohibited wax from the sperm whale but appeared to actually be superior.
This jojoba oil is an excellent moisturizing agent and has spreading and lubricating properties. It leaves a rich non-oily velvety feel and enhances flexibility and suppleness. Studies done at the University of Michigan demonstrated that it is quickly absorbed. Because of this, pores and hair follicles remain open maintaining their proper functioning ability.
Applied directly and as often as required it is known to reduce wrinkles and bring relief to sensitive skin. The desert peoples of Southern California and Mexico have long been using it to treat rashes and cuts because of anti-bacterial qualities.
Many companies and name brands are introducing their all natural skin care lines and in many cases, samples are available to try out their product.
But as consumers, we need to realize that any product, natural or chemical based may have side effects. It is most important to study the information available on the product of interest, know your skin type and any sensitivity and understand what you want to achieve.
People are becoming more aware of the effects chemicals can have. So lets let nature provide for our skin care and beauty products. As a web master I am excited to share this good news. There's more at www.skin-care-n-cosmetics.com and www.perfu
As always, before you attempt to self medicate or try a new health regimen or program we suggest you retain the services of a qualified health care professional.
Skin Care - The Importance of Prevention and Maintenance
When it comes to skin care, many people don't think about it until they start to see the first signs of wrinkles, usually some time in their thirties. Although paying attention to skin care is beneficial at any age, it is important to learn the basics of good skin care as early as possible, and make it a routine. Many times, however, people just don't know where to start. With all of the beauty products on the market, and all of the claims of their cleansing and anti-aging benefits, how can we figure out the best skin care regimens for ourselves? There have been many strides made in the field of skin care, and some of the new skin care products combined with some old, tried-and-true methods of care can help anyone keep their skin in the best shape possible.
1. Skin care from the inside out - One thing that a lot of people don't realize is that skin care is more than just keeping your skin clean and applying the right kinds of creams. The skin is an organ - the largest organ of the body - and all the organs of the body need good nutrition in order to function properly. With today's fast food diets and busy lifestyles, where many peoples' idea of a meal is grabbing a quick bite on the way in or out the door, it's no wonder that there is a nutritional crisis going on. When it comes to skin care, proper nutrition should be the first thing that we think of.
2. The Importance of Prevention in Skin Care - It is much harder for skin care beauty products and anti-aging products to work when we don't work to prevent many skin care problems. Good nutrition is one way to do this, but we also need to do more. One of the most damaging elements to the skin is the sun. Not so long ago, people regarded a nice tan as a sign of healthy skin. Today, most of us know that too much exposure to the ultra-violet rays of the sun and even the so called "safe" UVA rays that come from tanning booths is extremely damaging, and dangerous, to the skin.
UV and UVA rays cause premature aging of the skin, and can also cause other skin conditions such as rashes, inflammation, and skin cancer. A good quality sun block lotion is an essential beauty product to have on hand at all times - with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sun block should be worn all the time when you are outside - ultra violet rays are still present even on cloudy days - and should be reapplied whenever necessary. Hats work well for shielding our faces from the sun, as well as trying to always sit in the shade and not directly in the sun.
3. Cleaning - Keeping skin clean is essential for good skin care. A mild soap that doesn't dry the skin can be good, and there are several beauty products on the market that focus on safe skin cleansing. Your skin should be cleansed before applying or reapplying any creams or lotions, and any make-up used on the face should be as clean as possible.
4. Creams and Lotions - Today there are a variety of creams and lotions on the market that are very helpful for skin care. Beauty products and anti-aging products for the skin have been developed over the years that can help the skin renew itself, that can prevent or reduce wrinkles, help prevent or reduce other signs of skin aging, and clear up acne and other debilitating skin conditions.
Exfoliating skin creams help the skin slough off old skin cells and produce newer, more resilient skin cells.
Certain moisturizers not only keep the skin supple, they can also help the skin rejuvenate itself, and can soften or plump lines and wrinkles, making them noticeably smoother and less apparent. There are creams and lotions for specific areas of the face and body, such as creams for the delicate area around the eyes, the thicker and rougher area of the elbow, or the vulnerable area of the neck. There are non-prescription and prescription creams that can be extremely helpful for clearing up acne and blackheads.
One of the best things that you can do is consult a dermatologist to figure out the best beauty regimen for your skin type. With all of the wonderful beauty products and anti-aging products on the market, as well as some knowledge about nutrition and preventative skin care, your skin can look its best for a very long time.
How to identify the best skin care lotion for you
Lotion is a beauty product made from water and oil mixture that is being applied to skin to keep it soft and younger looking. Lotions available in the market today are being used as antiseptics, antibiotic, antifungal, and anti-acne agents. In addition, they are also being used as protective or soothing agents and commonly use to aid body massage.
Eating healthy foods, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats like olive or canola oil can go a long way in helping the skin stay healthy and supple. A good quality vitamin and mineral supplement each day can help too, especially for busy people who don't watch their diets as closely as they should. To be healthy, the skin needs the right balance of vitamins and minerals, especially the B vitamins, anti-oxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E, and essential minerals like calcium and magnesium. Proper eating habits and vitamin and mineral supplementation should be considered the first and most essential beauty products and anti-aging products on our lists.
Lotions are enriched with essential oils and/or botanicals to care for the skin. They are specially formulated to leave skin feeling soft and silky smooth. In addition, they beautify, improve tone, and hydrate all sensitive and delicate skin types.
When people buy lotion, they must consider their skin type first to get the most appropriate one. Here are some tips when buying skin care lotions:
1. Normal skin.
People who are lucky enough to have normal skin can use any type of lotion. These people do not have noticeable blemishes or acne. Their skin is soft and supple. Also, their skin has beautiful texture and pigment and does not have oily sheen. These people can get any lotion available in the market today and won't have problems keeping their skin looking brilliant and attractive. However, dermatologists recommend lotions that contains Vitamin E, A, and C to keep the skin smooth and soft.
2. Oily skin.
Oily skin is caused by overactive sebaceous gland. People who have oily skin have wet sheen around the chin, nose, and forehead. They also have visible pimples and blackheads all over the face and sometimes on some other part of the body. These people usually have large pores on the face that have greasy feel. To dry out the oily skin, these people must choose a lotion that is specially formulated to regulate the sebaceous gland. These lotions are often expensive compare to other lotion in the market but they usually work. The good thing about having an oily skin is it is not prone to wrinkles.
3. Dry Skin.
Dry skin can be a result of cold weather, genetics, excessive bathing, or allergic reaction. It is commonly rough, scaly, and itchy if not remedied. People who have dry skin are sensitive to cold and heat, they also have flakes on the cheeks, although they are unlikely to develop acne. The secret in soothing dry skin is regular use of moisturizers and thicker lotions. Lotions that are specifically designed for dry skin contain Alpha hydroxyl acids that is being used to exfoliate the top layer of the skin to get rid of dryness. Dermatologists recommend regular use of moisturizer and lotions to achieve soft and supple skin.
Skin condition must also be taken into consideration when buying lotion. People who are suffering from Eczema for example must use especially formulated lotion recommended by their dermatologists. Knowing the skin type is very important when getting a lotion that would match the need of the skin. This is a sure fire way in attaining attractive and soft skin.
Most skin care lotions in the market today are generally safe and do not have side effects. They can be applied directly to the body as directed. However, if irritation, itching, or redness occurs immediately seek medical attention. Also, do not forget to inform the dermatologist right away about allergic reaction to some substances and skin disorder/infections before trying out new lotions.
Acne affects some 25% of men and 50% of women at some point in their adult lives. The treatment of acne can be difficult for some women who also want to pay attention to moisturizing their skin. Acne in women can be brought on by many different factors. Some are easy to figure out. The use of heavy cosmetics can bring on acne. This is simply remedied now. There are many new cosmetics on the market today which are non-comedogenic, meaning they won't clog pores. Also foundations are much lighter than they used to be. Some powder foundations are now made with minerals, which are much lighter than heavy liquid foundations.
The use of some hair products can bring on acne. A simple and effective way to avoid acne due to hair products is to pull your hair back off of your face. Pull you bangs back so hair care products do not come into contact with your skin, especially during the hot summer months.
Acne in women can also be brought on my hormonal changes such as those associated with pregnancy. This means that the acne will go away after childbirth. Some medications can bring on acne. Some birth control pills can bring on acne. If you notice an acne flair-up after starting any new medication talk to your doctor.
There are many different types of acne treatments on the market. A spot treatment with a topical product, such as a benzoyl peroxide or glycolic acid may be in order for you and may be effective. If your acne is wide spread a visit to the dermatologist might be in order. He will have more suggestions and may start you on an oral antibiotic.
There are moisturizers and cleansers out now that take into account the needs of maturing skin along with being effective against acne. Remember, the over use of any drying agent on the skin can actually cause the production of more oil, and more acne, a catch 22. Make sure that you follow the skin care regimen suggested by the manufacturer of any product you use. Regular facials can help to reduce acne flair ups. The aesthetician will evaluate your individual skin care needs and come up with a program suited to them. It may take 2-3 weeks of following any over-the-counter regimen before you see a difference in acne.
Skin Care 101 for Summer
It's a well know fact that extended exposure to the sun's ultra violet light rays (UV), invisible intense rays of the sun can cause skin cancer, wrinkles and premature aging. Prolonged exposure to UVA or UVB accounts for 90% of the symptoms of premature aging of the skin such as age/ liver spots and easy bruising of the skin along with the increased risk of skin cancer.
UV radiation is divided in to 3 categories:
UVC radiation does not affect the skin and is completely absorbed by the ozone layer. UVC radiation is found in artificial sources, such as tanning booths.
UVB radiation affects the outer layer of the skin and is responsible for suntans and sunburns. UVB rays are most intense between the hours of 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM and much more intense during the summer months.
UVA radiation is a major contributor to skin damage. It penetrates deeper into the skin and is more constant than UVB. The intensity of UVA does not vary according to time of day or time of year.
UV radiation skin changes:
UV radiation breaks down collagen fibers and this process repeated over and over can develop wrinkles. UV exposure causes thickening and thinning of the skin causing wrinkles, easy bruising and tearing of the skin.
UV radiation causes the wall of blood vessels to become thinner causing bruising from a minor bump and appearance of tiny blood vessels in the skin especially on the face (those tiny red lines on cheeks and around the nose).
UV changes occur in the pigment in the form of freckles in light / fair-skinned people. Large freckles, also known as age or liver spots, appear on the back of hands, chest, shoulders, arms and upper back. Age or liver spots, as they are known, have nothing to do with age but are due to sun damage.
Stretch marks are caused by stretching the collagen and elastin to the point of breaking, which then results in scarring. Although there are many creams and lotions on the market containing collagen and collagen-building nutrients, these are not easily absorbed through the skin to the dermis - where the collagen and elastin reside.
Moreover, UV of course, can cause more serious damage - Skin Cancer.
There are three types of skin cancer:
Melanoma - is the most deadly and spreads to other parts of the body more readily than other types. Melanoma is the eighth most common cancer in the United States and causes 1-2% of all cancer deaths. It most frequently appears on the trunk in men and on the legs in women, but it can occur anywhere on the body. Suspicious or changing moles need to be diagnosed and treated immediately.
Basal Cell Carcinoma - is the most common skin cancer and tends to spread locally. Here again diagnosis and treatment immediately is important.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma - is the second most common, it can spread but is not as likely to a Melanoma. As before, diagnosis and treatment immediately is important. Protection is key to preventing UV damage to the skin. Here are some tips about sunscreens.
Sunscreens should contain ingredients that physically block UVA and UVB radiation. Look for a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 15-plus and the ingredient Avobenzone, Titanium, or Zinc Oxide.
Sunscreens or moisturizers with SPF 15-plus should be applied daily even in winter months. It should be applied liberally enough that it forms a film over sun-exposed areas. It takes approximately 20-30 minutes for sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin. It should also be reapplied after swimming, excessive sweating or toweling.
Important Note: Insect repellents reduce the sunscreen's SPF by up to one-third. When using sunscreen and insect repellent together a higher SPF sunscreen should be used and reapplied more often. On a positive note, the body manufactures vitamin D when exposed to sunshine, and it is recommended people get 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine 3 times a week. So get out and enjoy the sunshine just remember to much sun can cause skin cancer, wrinkles and premature aging so protect areas exposed to the sun during those peak sunshine hours, use a SPF of 15-plus sunscreen, protective clothing and a good pair of sunglasses to protect the eyes.

Many women, and some men, have stretch marks. They usually occur during periods of rapid growth - puberty, pregnancy or simple weight gain. The expectation is that, although they may fade somewhat with time, once you have them you've got them for life. However, new research has shown that there may be several options to eliminate these unsightly scars. Maintaining a good natural skin care routine will help avoid them, but getting rid of them takes some additional steps.
One effective remedy for this is emu oil. Emu oil itself is a good source of Vitamin E, but, more importantly, its high concentration of oleic acid allows it to carry nutrient compounds through the skin to the dermis. A cream combining collagen and collagen-building nutrients with emu oil can help the absorption, and the production of collagen. Vitamin K can also be used to heal stretch marks. Some have seen results in as little as four to six weeks when used twice a day. Wheat germ oil is another excellent healer. The best results come from a pure, organic product of high quality.
None of these remedies work very fast - don't expect to see significant change for at least a month or two, and it may take longer if the scars are severe or you've had them for a long time. But most people who are concerned about their stretch marks won't mind the wait.
Of course, the easier route is to avoid getting them in the first place - but it's unusual to come through a pregnancy or a period of rapid weight gain unscathed. Eating foods rich in vitamins C and E, zinc and silica (important for collagen formation), keeping the body well hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and maintaining a natural skin care routine free of harsh soaps and chemicals that dry the skin will help - and don't forget to use a good shielding lotion to keep your skin moist and supple.
