Learn Your Skin Care Facts

Maintaining a healthy skin is important in today's image-conscious society. So how do you go about it?

Skin is the largest organ in our body and the body's first layer of protection against the environment. Besides good skin is the most important ingredient in physical beauty. Ask the supermodels if you don't think so!

Choosing the best skin care product should be a very important part of your skin care routine.

All this makes proper skin care very important for a human being. Every day our environment inflicts a lot of damage on the skin -- from exposure to pollutants, sunlight, ultra violet rays, etc. And we add to that by using skin care products that are not very skin-friendly, through our ignorance.

This is easier said that done. There is no lack of skin care products in the market shelves though having a good skin is still a distant dream for many. Choosing the right skin care product from all those colorful products vying for your attention on the supermarket shelves is often a very difficult task. The flashy ads in magazines and billboards of supermodels endorsing various brands of skin care products isn't of much help either when you are trying to choose the best skin care product for you.

What is the ideal skin care routine? A healthy and glowing skin is the desired product of any skin care regime. The first step towards healthy skin is a clean skin. Any skin care routine starts with a cleansing process. Washing your face after you've been out is important, as facial skin is most exposed to the dust and grime in the atmosphere. But do not over do it, as excessive use of soap and other cleansers may lead to the secretion of excess oil and cause eruptions or lesions on your face. This is especially so if you have oily skin.

Drinking plenty of water daily is good for your skin as it helps get rid of toxins in the body. A balanced diet with the right servings of fruits and vegetables is also essential for maintaining a healthy skin. Acne is the most common skin care problem affecting people, especially teenagers. The medical name for this condition is 'Acne vulgaris.' Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the dead skin cells and the oil clogs the skin pores. Usually acne is seen to fade in the late 20s but some people, mostly women, face this problem even in the 40s and 50s.

The main cause of acne is the hormonal changes. Especially in teenagers, the sebaceous glands become overactive and secrete excess oil, which then blocks the pores in the skin. This, in turn, leads to inflammation and redness of the skin causing acne. The majority of those affected by acne only experience it in a mild form, but severe acne could lead to emotional and physical scarring.

Poor hygiene or increased stress levels are not, as is popularly believed, the cause of acne, though they may aggravate the problem. There are now excellent treatments available to treat acne and produce the desired results. Physicians treat acne based on the patient's skin characteristics and nature of lesions.

For proper skin care it is important that one understands one's skin type. There are mainly three skin types: dry, oily, and normal skin. When you choose skin care products, keep in mind that they should be chosen depending on your skin type.

Remember, first impression is always the best impression. And your skin plays a very important role in how others perceive you.

Skin Care For Acne

Caring for your skin is important for good health and beauty, but especially so if you are prone to acne. One of the best ways to keep acne under control is to maintain your skin's health as much as possible. This means keeping the skin clean and protecting it from damage from sunshine and harsh cosmetics.

Protect Your Skin From The Sun

A suntan may dry your skin, making the acne less noticeable, but this is only temporary. As your skin becomes accustomed to sun exposure, the acne will flare up again. Meanwhile you are risking skin damage that can cause premature aging and skin cancer. Many medications that treat acne cause the skin to become more sensitive to sunlight and more vulnerable to burning. Whatever the weather, you should wear sunscreen on your face and any other exposed skin when outdoors. Choose Makeup With Care

The best choice for good acne skin care is to wear no makeup at all. But if you feel you must wear makeup, choose products labeled noncomedogenic -- that means they will not clog your pores. Be aware that these products may still cause acne in some people. Above all, avoid makeup with an oil base. Read the labels carefully and use sparingly.

Shaving

Try both electric razors and safety razors to see which causes the least irritation to skin blemishes. Always use a sharp blade in a safety razor -- change the blade every 2 or 3 shaves. You may have to shave around blemishes to avoid cutting them. Be sure to soften the beard as much as possible with warm water and shaving cream before starting. If your skin is covered with blemishes, perhaps it is best to skip shaving that day.

No Touching

As tempting as it may be to squeeze pimples, don't! That invites more trouble by spreading the bacteria which cause pimples. It can also lead to permanent scarring. Try to avoid touching your face as much as possible because the hands carry dirt, oil and germs. Rest assured that acne can be brought under control. Medications will go a long way toward clearing your skin of acne. Your job is to help the healing process along as much as possible by taking good care of your skin.

The hottest anti-aging skin care treatment used by dermatologists - TCA skin peels.

Aging skin is something we all either have or will have. Its a fact of life. The skin starts to lose its elasticity, sun damage takes a toll, wrinkles and lines develop. Cuts and scratches don't heal as fast and scar easily. The skin is dry and can even become brittle. It literally thins out.

Cleansing Your Skin

Wash your face twice a day with a gentle soap or special acne skin cleanser, using a gentle, circular motion of the fingertips. Do not scrub, since this can aggravate acne. Moisten the face with warm water, then apply cleanser from the hairline to the neck. Rinse with lots of water and pat dry with a soft towel. Those with especially oily skin may need to use an astringent, but it must be alcohol-free, and used with care. Apply it only to the oiliest parts of the face and discontinue use immediately if your skin becomes irritated. If you feel you need an astringent, you may need to see a dermatologist instead. Hair care is also important -- shampoo twice a week to as often as daily, keeping the shampoo away from your face as much as possible.

This is because we have not cared for it. I heard on the radio today that 90% of Americans know more about their car engine and take better care of their car then themself. We take our cars for oil changes every 3-4,000 miles, rotate tires, buy better gas and use gas additives, high tech waxes, etc... Then we eat junk, fatty foods, don't drink enough water, don't eat regular balanced meals, forget our vitamins, etc... It's no wonder that Our skin ages amongst other things. We have the careless attitude that if it isn't broke don't fix it. We procrastinate with our bodies until they start to fail.

What we don't realize is that our skin is an organ just like our heart, lungs, etc... the skin takes in oxygen, vitamin D, protects against bacteria, accidents, etc... In the old days people were tarred and feathered as punishment. This tarring sealed the skin and if the affected individual didn't have the tar removed in a few hours they would die - why? Because their skin couldn't breathe and they overheated and died. So the skin helps us regulate our body temperature like a radiator.

Well, just like a radiator, we must care for our skin to get optimum protection and use from it. We must hydrate ourselves properly. Thats not just having a little water here and there. 90% of all Americans are improperly hydrated. An easy way to tell is to pinch and pull the skin between the thumb and forefinger. Does it go right back and feel supple or does it hold , feel dry, and very slowly go back (improper hydration). It is now known that we must drink 8-12 glasses of water a day and abstain from too much alcohol as it will further dry us out.

We must take multivitamins and eat proper, well balanced meals for healthy skin. The skin, just like finger nails is a early warning system. Problems with your skin and fingernails can foreshadow or warn of future or iminent problems and diseases, many of which can be avoided. There are whole books on this inate ability to hint of heart ailments, blood ailmaents, etc... We must eat right, hydrate right and take proper vitamins to keep our skin from aging. It is highly recommended to eat plenty of antioxidants to ward off the aging process. Eat blue berries, black berries, and have a glass of red wine daily. They are rich with antioxidants. Also omega 3 fatty acids and fish oils have been proven to retard skin aging (they have also been proven to increase brain function over 50% in all areas - ever had deep strange dreams after eating salmon? Salmon is very rich in omega 3's)

We can also help our skin along. Skin peels have been proven to increase our skins ability to regenerate, create higher levels of collagen, and increase hydration and pliability in our skin. They can basically reverse a lot of the effects of the aging process. Of these skin peels glycolic, lactic, salicylic and the 'fruit' peels are minor and will help, but need to be reapplied more often and will not help with deep wrinkles, lines, age spots, etc... The number one treatment plastic surgeons and dermatologists use to reverse the aging process outside of a face lift is the TCA peel.

Tca peels are a medium strength peel and have been proven to efectively treat more skin problems than any other treatment. It is also the safest, easiest to apply, and, by far, the most effective of all the skin peels. TCA peels can turn back the clock 10 years or more. TCA peels can treat and cure acne, wrinkles, lines, scars, etc... The results last up to 1 year so you only need to have it done once or twice a year. And the best part is they are now available for home use.

So, to keep your skin younger and healthier, drink plenty of water, eat right, take omega 3 supplements (fish oil pills are great for this as is salmon) and use proven science (TCA peels) to better care for your skin. Copper peptide creams (around $60) do show an increase in the skins ability to heal itself, but so does Neosporin for $3. In double blind tests there was no difference between the two in healingand scar repair. Remember your skin does a lot and is very important so take good care of it. To find TCA peels contact the author below or look it up on the internet.

Acne Skin Care - How To Clear Up Those Embarrasing Blemishes

People of all races and ages get acne. It is most common in adolescents and young adults. Around 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 develop the disorder. Nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne, making it the most common skin disease.

For most people, acne tends to diminish by the time they reach their thirties; however, some people in their forties and fifties continue to have this skin problem. I remember when I used to get acne myself. Was that annoying. And it sure ruined my social life, that's for sure. There is nothing more embarrasing than going out in public with acne all over your face. You know people are staring at you. You know they don't want to get near you because of those ugly marks on your face. I think they think it's contagious, which is not true at all. It's a good way to lose friends quickly. So, how did I get rid of my acne ? Well, before you can clear up your skin, you should know exactly who the enemy is and what you're up against. Here's a summary for you and some real honest to goodness solutions. It worked for me and it will work for you too.

What is Acne?

Acne is a disorder resulting from the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands), which leads to plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Although heredity may be a cause of this problem, it is more associated with hormonal levels and how you care for your skin (e.g. rubbing your skin too much will cause it). Chocolate and greasy foods are often blamed, but foods seem to have little effect on the development and course of acne in most people. In addition, dirty skin does not cause acne and neither does stress.

How Is Acne Treated?

You can buy over the counter medicine (OTC), see your family doctor, or a dermatologist (skin doctor). Over-the-counter(OTC)

Medicines

Benzoyl peroxide, resorcinol, salicylic acid, and sulfur are the most common topical OTC medicines used to treat acne. Topical OTC medications are available in many forms, such as gel, lotion, cream, soap, or pad.

Prescription Topical Medicines

Several types of prescription topical medicines include benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, adapalene, and azelaic acid. Some people develop side effects from using prescription topical medicines including stinging, burning, redness, peeling, scaling, or discoloration of the skin.

Prescription Oral Medicines

Oral antibiotics are thought to help control acne by curbing the growth of bacteria and reducing inflammation. Examples are clindamycin, erythromycin, sulfur, or isotretinoin. Some people experience side effects when taking these antibiotics, such as an increased tendency to sunburn, upset stomach, dizziness or lightheadedness, changes in skin color, and dry skin.

Other treatments

There are lazer treatments for rare serious cases and there are safe and natural herbal medications that work like over the counter medications, but often with less side effects.

How Should People With Acne Care for Their Skin?

* Clean Skin Gently with a mild cleanser 3 or 4 times a day.

* Avoid Frequent Handling of the Skin.

* Shave Carefully.

* Avoid a Sunburn or Suntan.

* Use Non-Oily Cosmetics. In summary, there are many treatments out there for acne skin problems. Talk to your doctor if you're unsure what to do. Try some of the suggestions mentioned here. In no time at all, you'll look better, feel better, and you'll be back out there enjoying your social life, your friends, and your family much more.

Acne Skin Care Myths

Acne can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. When someone repeatedly receives acne breakouts, they often wonder what they can do to prevent them from happening again. Unfortunately, many times they are misinformed about acne skin care. In fact, many commonly accepted acne "facts" are nothing more than myths. It is wise to inform yourself before making decisions about acne skin care.

The following are some acne skin care myths which any medical doctor will debunk:

Myth #1:

Acne treatments are universal, and what works for one person will work for everyone. The truth is, everyone's natural chemistry and skin are unique. Furthermore, each person lives in a unique environment which will have specific effects on their skin and acne. The truth is, what works as an acne "fix" for one person may completely fail for someone else. Each person should get personalized advice from a dermatologist. Furthermore, they should be willing to keep trying different things until they find a regimen that works for them.

Myth #2:

There is a quick fix for acne. This is another myth which often proves to be completely false. For people with very severe acne, getting rid of it can be a long-fought "war", not a quick battle. Even when medication is very effective, it can take up to 6 to 8 weeks to get initial results. To beat acne, it is necessary to be patient and "stick with it", even when treatment doesn't seem to be helping.

Myth #3:

You don't need a dermatologist's help to beat acne. Actually, the dermatologist is exactly who you need to beat acne! Some people believe that their own concocted remedies, or over-the-counter treatments are enough to clear up their skin. The fact is, you may need a personalized plan to actually clear up your acne, and only a doctor is qualified enough to recommend this safely. So do yourself a favor, and go see a doctor about it! You'll be glad you did.

Of course, those are just a few of the facts (and uncovered myths) about acne skin care. To get the full story, it is advised that you see a dermatologist and get more personalized recommendations. And of course, once you are prescribed a specific acne regimen, remember to stick with it! Anything worthwhile takes time.

Skin Care Book Reviews

The Wrinkle Cure
By Nicholas Perricone, MD

Let's start with a label that says "Dermatologist Tested". Well that Could mean that the product was tested but they may not have liked it. Tested yes but we would not know the results. Dr. Perricone did most of His testing and as the book goes along he admits what worked and what did not work. Working from there makes changes to make it work better. I give a lot of credit for that.

Before you can take care of your skin one needs to know what kind of skin you have. Not only knowing if you have oily or dry skin Dr. Perricone has a good chapter on skin tone. In this chapter he also goes into the different skin tones by regions in the world. With case studies on the different skin tones you can get tips on the do's and don'ts for your skin tips.

After reading his book I came away with a better understanding of how our skin is affected by our enviroment and the foods that we eat. If you do not understand the antioxidants and free radicals, well this is a good book to start understanding their relationship. I even made some changes. Starting with taking a multivitamin, eating yogurt and granola in the Morning. Trying to eat more fish and chicken during the day and snacking on almonds.

As you read through the book Dr. Perricone does use many words from the Medical field. He does take the time to give you the definition at that time without using a Glossary. It does break up the flow of your reading.

I read all the way through the book and then went back through with a note pad. The book comes in two different sizes, I got the smaller book for traveling. With the larger book you could high light it as you read through it. With only 218 pages it is a short book packed with information. You are sure to make at least one change to your daily regime after reading this book. Even Wayne'r the no brainer made some changes.

Beauty the new basics
By Rona Berg
Being a former beauty editor for The New York Times Magazine, Editorial director for ELLE magazine and has written for many Other magazines such as, Vogue, Instyle, Cosmopolitan, Mirabella, Self, and Mademoiselle. This book shows the years that she has taken to research, write, and live in a life full of beauty. Just start at the end of the book with her acknowledgments. These are some of the best people in their fields, be it doctors, hairstylist, makeup artists, aestheticians, or the fashion industry insiders. This really is a head to toe book, from hair cuts, color and styling; to facials, skin regimens for the different stages of life. From the neck on down to your feet, Rona has a tip that will help what you see and will also help the way you feel about yourself. This is the only book that I have read to date that will tell you what products work and why she likes them. Do not use this book as a coffee table book; your friends will pick it up for sure. Although do keep it handy. A Wayne'r keeper

If you suffer from acne, there are a few simple acne treatment steps you can follow at home to try and minimize your outbreaks. First, wash your face only twice a day. Some people feel they have to wash continually to keep your face clean. The truth is, washing your face too often will dry it out. Dry skin actually triggers your body to produce more oil and this will then trigger more pimples and blackheads to form. Second, try and avoid using any face products that contain alcohol.

My first book on natural skin care was:

Ageless Natural Beauty
By Sally Freeman
I'm not sure if it is because it was in the beginning and I did not know much, but I still think it was a great start. Like the back of the book says "Open your kitchen, grab hold of nature's bounty, do a little mixing and stirring, and bask in the blow of the best beauty treatments money can't buy". From what ingredients to use and how to use them. Do you grind them, steep them into infusions, even down to how long they will last. All I know this is were I started and it has lasted many years. A Wayne'r thumbs up.

Another book that I got in the beginning was:

The complete Woman's Herbal
By Anne Mc Intyre
I lucked out with this book as well. this is really a book from A to Z on herbs. Not only will it list the, also know as, contains, key uses, it will also say the Do Note Use, for many herbs. Taking all the stages of life in from uses in infant care, menopause, through the aging process. For a just sit down and read, there is a lot of information to take in. But to have in the house so you can refer to it, is a must. Another Wayne'r thumbs up.

Young Skin for Life
By Julie Davis
Her book your guide to smoother, clearer, more Beautiful skin-at any age. Is a good book and very easy to read. This is a book that you can read and is not overwhelming. A Wayne'r thumbs up!

Looking Good at Any Age
By Amy E. Newburger, MD
This book is one that I would check out at the library. Some books that I read will spark an interest to lead me into more information. After reading this book I was left with the feeling "OK".

Safe in the Sun
by Mary-Ellen Siegel
I could not say it better by Carolyn L. Ellner, Ph. D. "This book should be read by all educators and its message addressed in all our classrooms as part of good health education." If you have young children this book is for you. I wish mom had read this Book when I was young. A Wayne'r 2 thumbs up

Women & Beauty
By Sophia Loren
Ok I like Sophia Loren any way. And probably seen every movie at lest 3 times. Even went on Ebay and got two of her pictures, one even signed. If there is one person to get beauty tips from, she is a Wayne'r no brainer. She must be doing something right. A Wayne'r 2 thumbs up and look out for me out bidding you on anything that might have to do with Sophia Loren.

The Latest Information on Acne, Acne Treatment and Acne Skin Care

Acne is a skin condition caused by plugged pores due to the action of hormones on the skin's oil glands. The out break of lesions are commonly known as pimples. It is the most common skin disease in the United States affecting over 17 million people. Acne treatment is available and its condition does not poise a serious health threat. However, without the right acne skin care, permanent scarring can occur in the most severe cases. Acne usually appears between the ages of 10 and 13 and can last well into a person's thirties. In most cases, it will clear up by the time you reach 25 years of age, but again, some serious cases can last a life time.

There are a number of alternatives for acne treatment including topical prescription creams, oral prescriptions or completely natural remedies which can actually be made at home. The myth about acne is that it is totally related to our diet when in fact, it is almost always hereditary. Now there are some foods believed to trigger an outbreak and they tend to be high in iodine. Examples include beef liver, turkey, tortilla chips, kelp, asparagus, broccoli, white onions and corn only to name a few. If you really enjoy foods with high iodine content, you may want to experiment with them and take notes to see how your skin reacts the next day after having them. Acne skin care is crucial if you want to clear it up.

Alcohol will again dry your skin out and you know what happens next. Finally, don't squeeze your pimples. Squeezing them can actually force bacteria down further into your skin which will prolong the pimples life. If you follow these simple acne skin care guidelines, you may notice a difference within a week.
