Rosacea (say row-ZAY-sha), a chronic skin inflammation is a facial skin disorder which affects an estimated 15 million Americans, most of whom don't know they have it. In a study, over three-fourths of people polled were not familiar with rosacea.

It helps to keep a diary and log which items are triggers for episodes of rosacea.

What causes rosacea? That remains to be seen. It is not contagious. It may be hereditary, and people of Scottish, Welsh, Irish, English and eastern European descent note higher rates of rosacea than other ethnic groups.


What does it feel like? Most sufferers complain of itchy facial skin along with burning and stinging. Some people may even experience edema, a swelling of the face. Eyes can feel gritty and dry. Swelling of the nose due to excess tissue is not uncommon. Due to rosacea's acne-like effects, many sufferers report a feeling of lower self-confidence, and some even avoid public situations.


Symptoms include eyes that are watery, sunburn-like redness on cheeks, nose, chin or forehead, bumps or pimples, and small visible blood vessels. It can often start as a red patch on the cheek or another part of the face, and then spread to other parts of the face. This is not to be confused with a red, almost always smooth (no bumps or pimples) "butterfly" pattern that often appears across the bridge of the nose in those with Lupus.


In almost all cases, people who identified what triggers a rosacea onset for them had great success by simply avoiding those items. Here are some of the most common triggers: wind, sun exposure, emotional stress, alcohol, spicy foods, strenuous exercise, hot or cold weather, hot baths, heated beverages and certain skin care products.


That being said, here's how to care for your skin if you have rosacea. Perform a gentle cleansing of the facial skin every morning with a mild soap or non-abrasive cleanser. Smooth it on your skin gently using your fingertips. Avoid loofahs, brushes or sponges. Rinse the skin with lukewarm water and gently pat skin dry with a soft towel. Half of all rosacea sufferers tend to have dry or flaky skin. If this is the case, use a facial skin moisturizer after cleansing.


There is no medical evidence that links rosacea with skin cancer, but sufferers may be more likely to develop skin cancer later in life because of their light complexions and their heightened sensitivity to UV radiation from the sun.


Natural treatments are effective in managing rosacea's symptoms and may include the almighty B Vitamins, hydrochloric acid supplements, pancreatic enzymes, azelaic acid, topical antibacterial herb creams, dietary modification and immune system enhancement. Do You Know Why Personal Skin Care Is A Routine?

There is no doubt on the importance of skin care. The opinion on how-to (for personal skin care) differs from person to person. Some people believe that going to beauty parlours every other day is personal skin care. Many people believe that just applying some cream, lotion or something else to your skin, every now and then, will solve their problems. Then there are people who think that personal skin care is an event that happens once a month or once a year. Still others busy themselves with 'personal skin care' all the time.


However, personal skin care is not that complicated and neither is it that expensive (considering how beneficial it is). Personal skin care is following a routine or a procedure for attending to the needs of your skin. You nee to determine your skin-type, even befor you start with a routine(oily, dry, sensitive, normal etc) and select the personal skin care products suitable for it (you might have to experiment with a few personal skin care products). Here is a routine that should work for most people with normal skin.


The first thing you must do on personal skin care routine is 'Cleansing'. The three main ingredients of a cleanser are oil, water and surfactants (wetting agents). Oil and surfactants extract dirt and oil from your skin and water then flushes it out, thus making your skin clean. You might have to try a couple of cleansers before you find the one that suits you the best. Actually, you should always use soap-free cleansers. Also, you should use Luke warm water for cleansing (hot and cold water, both, cause damage to your skin). Take care that you don't over-cleanse your skin and end up damaging your skin in the process.


The second thing on the personal skin care routine is exfoliation. Skin follows a natural maintenance process wherein it removes the dead cells and replaces them with new skin cells. Exfoliation is just a way to facilitate the skin in this process. Dead skin cells are not capable of responding to personal skin care products but still consume these products, hence preventing them from reaching the new skin cells. Thus removing dead skin cells is important in order to increase the effectiveness of all personal skin care products.


Generally, exfoliation takes it place just after cleansing. As with any personal skin care procedure, it's important that you understand how much exfoliation you need. Exfoliate 4-5 times per week for oily/normal skin and 1-2 times per week for dry/sensitive skin. Exfoliate a couple of times more in hot and humid weather.


Be aware that Personal skin care is something everyone should take care of since young, if not, when we get older we are going to see the results of not caring about ourselfes.


Ok, Next thing on personal skin care routine is moisturizers. This is one of the most important and basic things in personal skin care. Even people with oily skin need moisturisers. Moisturisers not only seal the moisture in your skin cells, but also attract moisture (from air) whenever needed. Use of too much moisturiser can however clog skin pores and end up harming your skin. The amount of moisturiser needed by your skin will become apparent to you within one week of you using the moisturiser. Also, applying the moisturiser is best when your skin is still damp.


The last thing on personal skin care routine is sunscreen. A lot of moisturizers (day-time creams/moisturisers) come with UV protection - so you can get double benefits from them. Such moisturisers are recommended for all days (irrespective of whether it is sunny or cloudy).


Again, experiment with various personal skin care products and also with the amount you need to apply. What gives you best results is the best personal skin care recipe for you. However, if you have some kind of skin dilemma, it is best to consult your dermatologist before you actually start using any personal skin care products.

Taking Care Of Your Skin - Dealing With Acne Scars


Although acne does not always cause scarring, there are cases when acne has a disastrous effect on your face's skin; Most of the times this will happen because you have forcibly picked or squeezed the 'pimples'.


While we are at the causes of scarring, let's remember the ancient Greek saying "The best cure is prevention". If you don't mess up with your skin in the first place then, later, you will have no reason to seek for methods that deal with scarring caused by acne. Having this thing in mind, the first rule that you should follow is not hard to figure: never put your hands on your skin and mess with your acne, it will only worsen things!


Okay, that was on the prevention part; what we really need here are some effective methods so we can battle with the scarring that is already existent.


The first thing that you can do is use a technique called "Dermabrasion". This technique is achieved by 'removing' the old skin using modern, diamond edged medical machinery. After the old, scared skin has been removed, your body will naturally replace it with fresh, new skin. Dermabrasion will work best for cases where there are shallow acne scars.


The winter season is marked as Hemanta ritu in ayurveda. Hemanta ritu starts from mid November and ends in mid January. This falls in southern solstice which is called as visarga kala or dakshinayana in ayurveda. In winter the agni or body fire (digestive power) increases with the support of vata .


An alternative to Dermabrasion is laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing uses the same principles as Dermabrasion but the whole process is achieved using a strong, accurate laser beam. Laser resurfacing is considered to be a more accurate method than Dermabrasion.


If your case is not 'serious', you can try using chemical substances. In this case, what you have to do is to apply various types of acid on your face's skin; naturally, those acids will remove the top layer of your skin and a new, smoother layer will surface.


Finally, contrary to the previous case, if you are having some deep scaring then your last resort are dermal filling techniques. Material which is acceptable by the organism (in most cases collagen or fat) is injected below the scar so that the scar will elevate and come to a natural level. This technique is very effective but it has a disadvantage; it will only last as long as 6 months!

Skin care in Winter

Skin, the protective covering of our body bears assault of changing climates and seasons. Scorching heat of the summer vexes the skin with sun burns and dehydration. Thus the skin needs rest and rejuvenation in winter. But winter takes its own toll on the skin. The cold and dry weather of winter brings about drying of skin making it scaly. Lack of sufficient humidity out doors leads to cracked skin. Indoor heating further removes the traces of moisture and aggravates dryness of skin. Cracked, chapped and dry skin leads to various skin infections. Hence the skin has to be rejuvenated and care should be taken to keep the skin moist, soft and smooth.


The increased body fire even digests heavy foods easily and quickly. When sufficient food is not available for the amplified body fire it affects the nutritive fluids of body leading to vitiation of vata. Thus the vitiated vata assigns its qualities of coldness, dryness and roughness to skin. Hence in winter a great care should be taken to protect the skin with various measures regarding diets and lifestyles.


Skin care diet for winter:


1. Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated. Drinking warm water in winter prevents vitiation of vata and diseases which arise from vata.

2. Soups which are sour and salted - balance vata.

3. Include honey in the diet.

4. Avoid Consumption of junk foods, too much of sweets and oil food as these lead to weight gain.

5. Your diet must ideally comprise of Cane juice, milk and clarified butter (ghee) during winter.

6. Stay away from cold and refrigerated foods like ice creams, milk shakes as they vitiate vata.

7. Gorge on warm and heavy food to fulfill the requirement of increased body fire.


Skin care life styles for winter

1. Always wear warm clothes which are made of wool, silk and cotton.

2. When you are wearing clothes in layers wear cotton clothes next to your skin as they do not cause skin allergy. Moreover they absorb sweat. Where as synthetic clothes fail to do so. Unabsorbed sweat harbors microorganisms which cause skin infections.

3. Avoid long hot showers and bath.


4. Quick three minutes bath is advisable.

5. Twenty to 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week can give your skin a healthy glow.

6. Avoid repeated washing of face. This washes off natural oils from your skin and makes the skin dry, scaly and wrinkled. Use Luke warm water instead of hot water to wash face.

7. Use an indoor humidifier to place moisture in the air.


Skin care accessories for winter

1. Massage your body with oils which are infused with vata balancing herbs.

2. Apply moisturizing lotion liberally all over the body.

3. Smear lip balm on lips to prevent chapping of lips.

4. Take care of your skin on heels with balms and moisturizing products.
