Skin Care and Skin Treatments Made Easy

Every day we are barraged with new skin care lines and products with claims of younger and healthier skin, rejuvenation, age reversing, etc… According to the FDA, “Many of these products claims are entirely unjustified and, in some cases, outright lies.” So how is one to weed through the junk and scams to find what really works in skin care? Ask the experts. Dermatologists, plastic surgeons and estheticians have all received thousands of hours of training, certifications and licenses on skin techniques and skin care products that work.

Soaps can dry out your skin and cause aging which will exacerbate any sun damage.

They are the skin care experts and here is what they recommend and use on both themselves and their patients:

Waterproof sunscreens with a high SPF: Most people don’t think about their sweat and the fact that it will quickly remove and reduce the effectiveness of most sunscreens. Everyone knows that sunscreen is a must as skin cancer is on the rise and is very deadly. But it must also be effective through the day. Sweat, swimming, etc… will remove the sunscreens protection throughout the day. Some skin care moisturizers have sunscreen with high SPF’s already included. Some makeup lines also have started to include SPF protection. However, make sure that you have a high SPF, low SPF’s are not very protective and can still allow sun damage and aging of your skin. Most of the dermatologists said to stick with waterproof sunscreens as they have the highest SPF’s and are proven to be most effective in clinical studies.

Retinoid or retinol creams and lotions: The latest in anti-wrinkle and anti aging skin care products are retinol creams and lotions. Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A and it has been in use by dermatologists for years as a natural anti aging skin care treatment. Instructions vary dependent upon the product and its unique concentration of active ingredients. It is best to refer to the manufacturers instructions and your doctors recommendations if prescribed. Retinol creams and lotions are very effective against color and pigmentation problems and also wrinkles and sun damage. They are very effective and would make a good addition to any skin care treatment or program.

Alpha-hydroxy, beta-hydroxy and TCA acids: A cleanser with these ingredients will freshen your skin, alter your skin pH so it is non-favorable to bacteria and acne, and remove dead and damaged skin. Alpha-hydroxy (glycolic acid) and Beta-hydroxy (salicylic acid) are effective on oily prone skin. TCA is a deeper medium strength acid and is by far the most effective for skin care and treatment. In a survey of over 1,000 dermatologists and other skin care and treatment experts across the country this is what they recommended if you could only choose 5 skin care products or items.

Dry Skin Care Tips

Here are some dry skin tips if you are experience from frequent dry skin problems.

1. Wash skin with a good toilet "soap," which is actually a "detergent," such as Dove, Lever 2000, Olay bars. Nothing works better, and clean skin is essential to healthy skin. All of these great cleansers can be bought in bulk at Costco for very little.

Weight Loss Diet - Here's some more myths we've been taught to believe over the years. Experts weigh in on the truth that lies behind each of these tall stories. All carbohydrates are bad for you and should be avoided. TRUTH: Carbohydrates have a moderate amount of calories (having half as many as fat). Simple carbohydrates (sugar) should be limited - complex carbohydrates: whole grain, starches etc.

The smell isn't great, but it's the best astringent toner on the market.

2. Tone skin with cotton (no substitute) and witch hazel. This step isn't necessary if you don't use makeup. REAL cotton actually works and costs more than the synthetic stuff. Buy a roll of cotton (about $5), and tear off what you need. 16 oz. of witch hazel retails for less than $5.

3. Exfoliate: (a) mechanically, with scrubs, or (b) chemically, with alpha hydroxy acids. Nivea's Scrub for Men is great for both genders M.D. Forte's Glycare Perfection Gel 15% is one of the best AHA. Both are simple, yet effective, products. The Nivea product is about $4; the M.D. Forte is about $15. It can be purchased on the web see our website for more details.

4. Apply a SPF 15 sunscreen, or higher SPF if very sensitive to sun, every morning, including one's ears and neck. Gels are better than lotions for men, youthful, and acne-prone skin. Apply generously. There's a company who touts large 24 oz. bottles of SPF 15 in several different forms for less than $6. It works great.

5. Moisturize according to skin type: (a) for most complexions Dove Moisturizers are about as perfect as it gets; (b) for extremely dry skin only, try Moisturel, Curel, Eucerin, or DML. If acne-prone or oily skinned, use Neutrogena Clear Pore Treatment at night, and do NOT moisturize during the day. Dove products are about $6. Ditto the Neutrogena product. The others about twice the price, but come in much larger packaging.

Skin Care Tips for Oily Skin

Sometime, some of us have very oily skin -- so oily that it shines!

Here are some tips I've learned over the years for skin care and make-up:

Only use oil-free foundations, powder blushers and powder eyeshadows. Apply foundation on freshly washed skin -- apply over eyelids and lips. A base of foundation on eyelids and lips will help eye shadow and lipstick stay on longer. To help control the oil, wash your face with mild soap and water 2-3 times a day (if you are at home). If you are not at home, carry baby wipes (for sensitive skin) in your purse and clean your face with a baby wipe -- then re-apply make-up. Use a drying facial masque at least once a week. Place hot, steamy washcloths on your face before applying the masque to open pores. This will help the masque "deep clean" your pores.

Only use oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin at bedtime.

If you want to dry up oil on top of make-up -- lightly dab your face with toilet tissue. The toilet tissue will soak-up the oil without removing your make-up. To cover up a blemish, after you apply foundation, apply a tiny amount of under-eye concealer to your fingertip and lightly dab the blemish until it disappears. I would recommend you to use Witch Hazel (available in drug stores) as an inexpensive astringent. You can also dab Witch Hazel on you scalp with a cotton ball to dry up the oil on your scalp. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water a day to help control breakouts.

Skin Care 101

When choosing a skin care product for your skin, it is important to know your skin type. Skin type is fairly universal for all ethnic backgrounds with the only difference being pigmentation. Pigmentation is what gives skin its color. When determining your skin type there are several factors to consider. Factor number one: do you have oily or dry skin? The second would be whether or not you have pigmented skin. The third factor is skin sensitivity and the fourth is the dreaded reality of aging: wrinkles. First determine if you have oily or dry skin. Oily skin may have a shiny look and also may feel oily to the touch. Dry skin may feel uncomfortable and tight as well as feel rough and have a dull color.

Sebaceous (oil) glands produce a secretion that helps keep moisture in the skin. Excess oil production can result in oily skin but that is not the only factor. Diet, stress, hormones, medications, and genetics can affect oil production. The role of Skin pigmentation in choosing skin care products has to do with the predisposition to develop undesirable spots on the skin. The types of spots that skin care products may be able to help fade are freckles and sun spots. Skin sensitivity has to do with the skin's ability to resist irritation. Sensitive skin reacts easily to a stimulus with stinging, redness, or acne. Rosacea is in the sensitive skin category. The last factor involved in choosing skin care is the presence of wrinkles. Sun exposure is a major factor in aging of the skin and wrinkles. Prevention is the best with the use of sunscreens in your skin care products. Oily skin versus dry skin, pigmented versus non-pigmented, sensitive versus resistant, and aging skin are all factors involved choosing skin care products.

Nationwide Dermatologists' Best and Most Recommended Skin Care Products

We scoured the country and asked dermatologists and other licensed skin care professionals (plastic surgeons, estheticians, etc…) what over the counter products they recommended. The problem is that there are so many products available that it can make your head spin just trying to sort through it all and find what you need. So, we wanted to get advice right from the foremost sources – America’s dermatologists.

These are their top recommended skincare products and many are actually used in their offices:

1. Non harsh soaps and cleansers: Harsh soaps like Dial will dry out your skin and can induce skin problems and early aging (something you definitely don’t want). There are numerous soaps and cleansers which will not dry out your skin. Cetaphil and its cheaper generic equivalents, like Walmart’s Equate brand, was recommended by almost every dermatologist. These cleaning products will clean your face, won’t leave dirt that can clog pores, and will not over dry your skin. They are also hypo-allergenic, so people with sensitive skin types won’t get rashes or similar.

2. Non-comodogenic face lotions with sun protection: The higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) the better the protection. Every dermatologist basically kept reemphasizing how important it is to stay out of the sun and to protect from sun damage to your skin. UV rays from intense sunlight will age your skin and cause premature wrinkling, sun spots, broken blood vessels and capillaries, and can cause the deadliest of all cancers – malignant melanoma. Some come with botanicals, vitamins and alpha-hydroxy acids (like glycolic and malic acids) which will nourish and strengthen your skin – they also smell nice.

3. Benzoyl peroxide and beta-hydroxy acids for oily prone skin: Some of the dermatologists were for benzoyl peroxide solutions, but most favored the beta-hydroxy solutions as the benzoyl peroxide tended to irritate and dry out the skin too much. The beta-hydroxy acid (salicylic) solutions were more effective at oil removal and fully cleaning out pores.

4. Neosporin: For wound repair and healing from cuts, scrapes, and burns (like chemical peels) nothing was recommended more than Neosporin or an equivalent anti- bacterial ointment. This is documented by many medical studies and numerous articles in medical journals. These antibiotic ointments seal out bacteria and infections and greatly increase healing and lessen any resultant scarring. Dr. Horace Brown in Detroit stated, “ The use of antibiotic crèmes and ointments will generally half the normal healing time and if used from day 1 will lessen the chances of scarring. We have also found that patients using it around their eyes as a nightly treatment have plumper and fuller skin than thiose who do not." So, there you have yet another use for antibacterial ointments.

5. Estheticians Choice TCA Skin Peel: Most offer this in office as an out-patient service. This skin peel is a medium depth chemical peel and is used for treating a wide variety of skin conditions and ailments. It is used on everything from aging skin, freckles, sun spots to acne, rosacea and eczyma. This peel has been featured on numerous reality TV shows and results in a younger, fresher look for the patient. This TCA peel is the most effective and the anti-aging results (like skin tightening and treating wrinkles) last, on average, 6 months to 1 year. It is important to note that Estheticians Choice TCA skin peel is available at a great savings for in home use and no prescription is required (see the link below for more on this TCA peel).

So, there you have it, the five most recommended over the counter products from dermatologists nationwide.

Skin Care - The Perfect Way To Care For Your Skin

Everywhere I go people are asking me what is the the most flawless skin care plan to follow? Is there even such a thing? Sorry to disappoint you, but if there is such a thing, I don't know what it is. Let me be the first to say, that there is no perfect anything in this world let alone skincare programs. It varies wildly between individuals. There are so many constituents that come into play such as the person's skin type, whether they have acne, blemishes, or any other skin marks or conditions, etc. Another thing that may affect a person's choice in skin care products is whether they have undergone a surgical procedure of sorts recently. If you are taking other skin care products at the moment, sometimes the formulations will clash with other products.

Cleansers: A good cleanser will thoroughly clean the skin and leave you feeling refreshed. Cetaphil is highly recommended by the experts we interviewed. Eye creams and treatments: The skin under and around your eyes is quite susceptible to wrinkles, crows feet, and is a very delicate and sensitive area. Some effective skin care products and skin treatments that are very effective for the eye area are made by Hydroderm. Their products moisturize and plump up the area around the eyes and noticeable differences can be seen in just a few days or weeks. Eye creams and treatments are a great addition to any skin care or treatment.

If you are a adult female and you are in the premenstrual stages, it may also bear on your skin to varying degrees. Another thing to consider is the seasonal changes and the differences in requirements that these changes bring with it. For instance, skincare in the winter time is markedly different from the summer's. During the winter times your skin will probably be more dry or normal and you will most likely need to use moisturizers to keep your skin soft. And during the summer months you will need to worry about things such as tanning lotion and using cleansers and exfoliators to clean off sweat and debris that gathers up when you are in movement.

Some people opt for vitamin C formulations to improve the health and youthfulness of their skin while others may use glycolic acid if there are signs of blackheads appearing. Salicylic acid is an option individuals use during the four levels of a menstrual cycle. Universally speaking, try using exfoliation to remove dead skin cells and to make room for new skins to grow out. As you can in all likelihood tell by now, there are a huge range of skin care products on the market catering to every imaginable need. The most important thing is to sit down and ask yourself what you need now, and also in terms of prevention of things like wrinkles or blemishes in the future. It is advised to speak with your dermatologist before following any skin care routine. Also you should consult with a professional if you plan on changing your routine very often or seasonally. This way you can save time, money, and also prevent any number of mistakes and mischances that could adversely affect your skin- rendering all your efforts outdated.
