Plastic Surgery Articles, Tips and Information

History of Plastic Surgery

When most people use the term Plastic Surgery, they more often than not use it in reference to cosmetic surgery. Few people actually stop to think that Plastic Surgery covers a far wider range of surgical procedures and that cosmetic surgery is only one type of surgery related to Plastic Surgery.

Although Plastic Surgery goes as far back as Ancient Egypt the first physicians who actually placed a more scientific scope in the field of Plastic Surgery and, to be more precise, cosmetic surgery were two Sicilians Gustav and Antonio Branka .

The full scope of Plastic Surgery is quite wide if one stops to think about it and more often than not, is related to, and, plays a fundamental role in conjunction with other fields of medicine and surgical procedures pertaining to the field of general surgery. Plastic Surgery is basically concerned with the reconstruction of the surface of the body whether that has to do with the reconstruction of facial or body disfigurations that are either congenital in nature or, acquired due to accidents or illness for example, cancer related disfigurations.

However, it was not until after World War I that Plastic Surgery developed its full scope of use. This was due to the enormous amount of facial and body disfigurations which either resulted in Plastic Surgery being undertaken for aesthetic reasons, to regain functional abilities or, more often than not, for both.

From then on and up until today, Plastic Surgery continues to play an ever increasingly important role as a field of medicine in today’s’ society either on its own when referring to simple cosmetic surgery or as part of, and in relation to other fields of surgical specialties.

Exercise and Your Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery can make an exciting and lasting difference in the way your face and body look. Many see the results as 'life-changing'. You will feel more confident and positive about yourself. It marks the beginning of a new attitude about you and your health. When you look good you'll want to maintain that appearance. Not surprisingly, many start incorporating exercise and better eating habits into their daily routine, habits that will help you look and feel younger longer. The better your physical condition is prior to surgery, the better your surgical outcome will be.

Successful Weight-Loss System - A Successful Weight-Loss System Researched By Harvard University. You may have heard of the 'Mediterranean Diet'. It is well known to be one of the healthiest eating regimes known to man as well as an effective and powerful deterrent against heart disease, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

Because you have more muscle from an active lifestyle your metabolism will remain higher.

Elective surgery will give you time to prepare to be as healthy as possible. An added bonus for those who are fit beforehand is they won't gain as much weight when they are inactive after surgery. You will be given strict instructions by your doctor on when to return to an exercise regimen. It's usually three to four weeks after a facelift, and a month after any type of body surgery, like breast augmentation or liposuction. Once back to working out or starting up for the first time then it's best to build up slowly.

EXERCISE PROGRAM

You've had the surgery you wanted, the results are great...but how do you keep yourself looking slimmer and younger. The operative phrase may be "getting into a routine". To get results you need to train a minimum of three times each week, If you do it twice, you will maintain your current fitness but it'll be difficult to see any esthetic change. The cornerstone of your workout should be strength training. You lose a pound of muscle every year after thirty and your metabolism slows down. Cardio should be at least three times a week or more. I recommend three to four weekly sessions of moderate cardio lasting about 50 minutes and one twenty-minute intense session. The cardio must be aerobic, so your heartbeat remains at an elevated rate with activities like cycling, running and fast walking are examples. Tennis and squash don't qualify. Here's a good tip! Do your cardio after your weightlifting as your glycogen levels are down and you'll burn more fat. Flexibility is another important aspect of fitness, one people often neglect if they're rushing. You don't get old then stiff, 'You get stiff, then old."

I recommend doing stretches anywhere, anytime, while watching television, in the shower, even at your desk. I take my strength training clients through a dynamic stretch to warm up for every workout , then end the workout with a static stretch for lasting flexibility gains. But what about those people who really just don't like to exercise? The secret is to get a program that is tailored to you. A personalized program can be really motivating and there are so many options to choose from. Hiring a personal trainer can help you create a program that works for you. Classes are another way to put some fun into your routine. Pilates, yoga, spinning, step aerobics, there are lots to choose from.

NUTRITION

If you want to decrease body fat and increase lean tissue, sixty per cent of your success will be determined by diet. If you are not getting enough proteins, fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates and water, the muscle won't regenerate itself. I recommend 3 meals and 2 snacks. If your meals are too far apart, the body holds onto the fuel because it doesn't know when the next meal will come. It saves fat for survival. When meals are too large your blood sugar spikes, causing insulin to spike causing fat storage yet again. Carbs are getting a lot of attention these days: are they good, bad or half-way in between? I recommend meals that contain lean protein, a vegetable, and a 'good' carbohydrate. Try and eat a low glycemic index carb, like sweet potatoes or real oatmeal. These carbs have a slow and consistent release of sugar into the bloodstream. This keeps your insulin levels nice and low. I don't like diets like Atkins which are too high in fat, and I'm not a proponent of The Zone Diet, but you should watch your carb intake.

I prefer clients keep a food diary for a couple of weeks. You become accountable and start thinking a lot more about what your eating. I stress the importance of consistency and regular eating habits. Try to eat twenty-one meals a week and don't skip them. Breakfast is your most important meal. I usually make an egg white omlette with spinach and feta cheese. (Lunch is usually chicken or fish with salad, and dinner is similar, usually with salad). Of course, there is no secret formula to getting fit. It's a matter of planning ahead and working hard. But the results are worth it if you can make it work. Set realistic and attainable goals for exercise and diet or you'll fall off the wagon. They must also be challenging to make changes. It usually takes 45 to 60 days to see that change and you will feel so much better about yourself. Just remember, nutrition and exercise go hand in hand for your best results before and after surgery.

Where's The "Plastic" In Plastic Surgery?

Don't be looking for the Dupont Company sales rep the next time you visit a Plastic Surgeon's office because, despite popular belief, there's no "Plastic" in Plastic Surgery. The name is taken from the Greek word "plastikos" which means to "mold or shape."

Initially plastic surgery procedures were limited to facial and body reconstruction caused by accidents, trauma, illness or birth defects.

As people began to see the purely cosmetic possibilities, many surgeons expanded their services to include facelifts, rhinoplasty (nose jobs), breast augmentation and liposuction. It's important to know the difference between plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery, especially if you're planning on having your insurance company foot the bill for your procedure.

Cosmetic surgery is performed solely to improve a person's outward physical appearance and self-esteem by correcting naturally occuring conditions that the patient is unhappy with. Cosmetic surgery may be performed by either a Plastic Surgeon or a Cosmetic Surgeon. Cosmetic surgery is generally not covered by health insurance.

Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to correct or reduce the effects of congenital defects, accidental trauma injury, infections, tumors, and other health-related conditions. It's primary purpose is rarely to simply improve appearance except for extreme cases involving major facial or bodily damage resulting from automobile accidents, etc. Plastic Surgery may only be performed by a Plastic Surgeon.

In most cases insurance does pay for plastic surgery although there are some cases where your claim may be reduced or denied completely. That's why it is always important to coordinate the planned procedure with your health insurance provider BEFORE you get the procedure.

Often times the difference between whether or not your insurance company will cover the bill is the REASON for the procedure. If, for example, you are having your nose reshaped because you're unhappy with your profile -- no deal. You're on your own. However, get that same nose job because your doctor has diagnosed a chronic breathing problem that results in the potentially dangerous condition known as "Sleep Apnea" and you could end up with a new nose courtesy of your health insurance provider!

If you are planning to visit a Plastic Surgeon, keep the following items in mind:

Your plastic surgeon should be "Board Certified" by the American Board of Plastic Surgery;

If your doctor will be using anesthesia then make sure that only a licensed Anesthesiologist administers the medicine and make sure that the facility where the procedure is being performed is accredited by at least one of the following organizations:

American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities(AAAASF)

Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC)

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)

Although making sure that all of these certifications are present is no guarantee of a trouble-free experience, NOT having these certifications means that both the doctor performing plastic surgery, as well as the people who run the facility, have a serious lack of regard for your health and well being! You should NEVER use an uncertified plastic surgeon or facility. The risk is simply not worth it.

Plastic Surgery Advancements

First the definition of Plastic Surgery is:

Surgical repair of congenital or acquired deformities and the restoration of contour to improve the appearance and function of tissue defects. Development of this specialized branch of surgery received impetus from the need to repair gross deformities sustained in World War I. By the grafting of tissue or the use of artificial materials such as silicone, some remarkable restorations have become possible. Severe burns and the removal of fairly extensive skin cancers leave scars that must be covered by skin grafts; breast reconstruction after mastectomy is another application. In addition to correcting a disfigurement, plastic surgery is often needed to restore vital movement and function of tissues that have been destroyed. It is also performed for purely cosmetic purposes, such as improving the shape of a nose, bringing outstanding ears closer to the head, or lifting the skin to erase wrinkles. Modern plastic surgeons often employ CAT scans to produce computer-generated images that are used to plan or simulate complex reconstructive surgeries.

The very first descriptions of skin grafts date back to India circa 800 B.C., where they served to obstruct the facial hole resulting from nose amputations. During the Renaissance, Ambroise Paré developed the art of suture, leaving records in which he describes both the instruments and the technique employed. In the 19th century, new methods for operating were developed, ending earlier rudimentary and painful procedures. However, at that time the Catholic Church was strongly opposed to the advancement of science in general, and specifically opposed remodeling the human form. But in the 20th century, when Europe was confronted with the seriously mutilated faces of soldiers returning from the fronts of WWI, the imperative to repair them grew, and plastic surgery finally gained a respectable place in the medical profession.

Then World War II came and once again, plastic surgeons used their skills to help their countrymen. This led to more plastic surgery advances. Then by the 1950s, plastic surgery was fully integrated into the medical community. In the 1960s, the concept of plastic surgery grew in the consciousness of the American public as more physicians performed plastic surgery procedures. Plus in this decade, silicone started being used in plastic surgery and started becoming a part of our culture. Now in the 1970s, the plastic surgeon became one of the leading medical professions. And in the 1980s, plastic surgery was expanding all over the country. By the 1990s, there thousands of board-certified plastic surgeons and the numbers continue to grow, even today. Now there are thousands of plastic surgeons, offering a variety of plastic surgery procedures to patients not just in the United States, but all over the world.

Plastic surgery were it once was just for the very rich has become affordable for almost all Americans. Plastic surgery has truly come a long way and continues to make advancements in the complexity of procedures performed today.

Collagen Injections on the Forefront of Cosmetic Plastic Surgery

Cosmetic plastic surgery boosts your confidence the way you look. And increase in self-confidence in the look can encourage you to focus your energy on other areas like family and career. There may me certain flaws in your body and face that makeup, diet and exercise can’t help mask. There you should look into the ultimate in makeover, i.e., cosmetic plastic surgery.

The advancement of corrective body and facial surgeries has made the cosmetic procedures easy, affordable and less invasive. This has led many to go for pure cosmetic procedures where aesthetic value comes first.

But, cosmetic procedures are not totally different from reconstructive procedures. Cosmetic surgery also considers your general health conditions and particular physical traits. That’s why you should not plunge into a procedure just for look alteration.

Of many cosmetic procedures collagen injection is a popular procedure embraced by many women to achieve that fuller and perfect lip, and to remove the facial wrinkles.

Collagen injections are all-purpose fillers to fix problems on the face. Collagen is filled into the areas that need plumping-up. For removal of wrinkles, scars, and different marks these are the most suitable stuffs. Collagen can add volume to face giving it smooth appearance.

We all have collagen, a kind of protein, between the skin and the underlying tissues. This collagen helps to build fascia, the network of fibers that gives skin its bounce, volume and softness. That’s why collagen injections are popular in celeb circles and administered as: collagen lip injection, facial collagen injections, buttock collagen injections and scar collagen injections.

Why do we need collagen injections?

Well, we have the collagen in our tissues. But its amount over ages goes on decrease after youth and the skin loses elasticity. Collagen injection helps replenish this condition The idea behind injecting collagen is to replenish this underlying skin structure so that it regains its ability to bounce back. Collagen replacement therapy helps smooth facial lines as well as reduces the look of most types of scars. Taking a collagen injection is as easy as taking any other injection.

Rarely, it does involve some complications like bruising, redness and puffiness of skin. In severe cases, the collagen migrates to other parts of the body. But the complications can be avoided with proper consultation with a surgeon by doing collagen acceptance/rejection test in one’s body.

What are different types of collagen?

· Bovine collagen:

Derived from the tissues of cow, the bovine collagen is very compatible with human skin. It has fewer cases of allergy and rejection. Zyderm is the most popular names in bovine collagen.

· Human collagen:

It comes from a human donor. Human skin readily accepts this. Zyderm and Zyplast and the two most popular human collagen.

Facial Rejuvenation: Plastic Surgery and Beyond

It is no surprise that we live in a youth-oriented culture. It seems that every year the standard of beauty to which we are all exposed and aspire, gets younger and younger at the same time that Americans are growing older. Because of the emphasis in prevention and treatment of disease, the American Baby Boomers, those 50 and over, are healthier and more fit than people of the same age in previous generations.

Father and son, in 1400, they outlined the basic guidelines which plastic surgeons should follow when undertaking reconstructive nose surgery. However, the first to ever create a center for Plastic Surgery and to take the first steps to making Plastic Surgery an equally accepted field of medicine was another Italian, Taliakosi.

They have the stamina, energy and prowess of people half of their chronological age. This causes many "Baby Boomers" to exhibit an intense interest in procedures and techniques to help them look as young and fit as they feel.

This is the point at which many Americans consider plastic surgery. Signs of aging on the face are the most common symptoms causing people to seek out plastic surgery. The four most common facial complaints are:

Loose skin:

The areas on the face where we see loose skin most often are the jowls, the neck and the skin around the eyes.

Fine Lines:

Tiny wrinkles on the face increase in number with time and are more plentiful in lighter skinned people. The most common sites are around the mouth and eyes but they can also develop anywhere on the face. These lines are made worse by the sun.

Bagginess around the eyes: Loose skin is only one of the causes of bagginess around the eyes. Additionally, small fat pads around the eyes can move from the top and sides of the eye region and end up resting beneath the eyes. Shadows emphasize the problem and if there is any inherited darkening of the skin the problem becomes even more noticeable.

Exaggeration of Features: As we age, some of our features

continue to grow. Although the rate of growth is unperceivable year to year, eventually, over time we can see that there is an actual lengthening of our earlobes and nose. Our brow may have lowered and there is an increase of fat below the chin, and in the fold between the nose and upper lip.

All of these complaints can be addressed through plastic surgery. The success, risks and benefits differ depending on the areas of the face and neck the surgery is to correct, as well as other factors such as the age of the patient and the severity of the problem.

What is a facelift? The facelift is the classical surgical response to aging problems of the face and neck. In a facelift the skin is separated from the underlying tissue and pulled upwards and backwards. The excess skin is them removed resulting in a lifting and tightening of the appearance of the skin.

There are varying procedures that go deeper, some as far down as the layer adjacent to the facial bones. Surgeons determine how deep to go with the procedure based on the needs of the patient, on a case by case basis.

What results can you expect from a facelift?: A facelift will lift the areas of your face that are sagging, such as your cheeks and jowls. It will also tighten the loose skin on your neck as well as remove excess fat from under your chin and alleviate that "turkey neck" look.

What about scarring? The scars from a facelift can be extensive, although not easily detectable. Scars will more than likely extend from above the ear, down the front of the ear, around the ear lobe, up the back of the ear, and into the hairline behind the ear. There can be another incision beneath the chin.

Most scars from a facelift are hard to see once they heal. Scars can be camouflaged with make-up within three weeks and should fade beyond detection in one to three months. What complications can occur? Some of the complications that can result from a facelift are: Hematoma, Skin death; facial

weakness or paralysis; attached earlobe (pixie ear) and open ear canal. What about lines and wrinkles? Although the results of a facelift and other facial plastic surgery can be dramatic the signs of aging that a facelift will not alleviate are wrinkles and fine lines on your face. Additional procedures such as Botox Cosmetic™, laser resurfacing, chemical peels and dermabrasion of the face are needed to address lines and wrinkle.

Is there a safer alternative to facelifts and other invasive procedures? Amazing advances have been made recently in topical preparations to combat the signs of aging. These topical preparations are a safe alternatives to many of the invasive procedures detailed above. One such preparation is Rejuvinol™ . It is a unique nutrient-rich moisturizer that nourishes tones and rehydrates for firmer, more resilient skin.

What benefits can be realized from Rejuvinol™?

Users of Rejuvinol have reported a 50-90% reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles within minutes of application. They report that the product diminish the appearance of forehead creases, droopy brows, crow's feet, furrows, laugh lines, feathered lips, and more. Additionally, it reduces the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, Rosacea, and enlarged pores. It gives skin a plumper, more youthful appearance

What are the side effects of using Rejuvinol™?

There have been no reported side effects of using Rejuvinol™.

Rejuvinol is a non-invasive answer to the question of what a person can do to look younger. In most cases of fine lines and wrinkles, Rejuvinol is as affective as Botox Cosmetic™, dermabrasion and chemical peels with none of the risk of invasive surgical procedures and injections, at a fraction of the cost of these procedures.
