Proper nutrition is an area of confusion for most people. With all of the conflicting information in the media and all of the fad diets out there, it is hard to know how to eat right. Eating right comes down to eating the proper balance of the three main compounds that make up our food: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Knowing the balance is the first step, knowing the right foods to eat within these groups is the next.
Carbohydrates: Fourty percent of your calorie intake should come from carbs.
A good portion of the carbs you take in should be low glycemic and dietary
fiber rich. Low glycemic carbs take longer to digest and fill you up quicker.
Good sources of these types of carbs are fruits such as mangos, grapefruits
and pears. Whole grains breads, rice and pasta, veggies and popcorn (without
butter) are all excellent sources of dietary fiber as well. Eating carbs
rich in dietary fiber help prevent many cancers, decrease cholesterol in
the bloodstream and decrease the chance of diabetes, which is increasing
within the population.
Protein: Thirty percent of your calorie intake should come from protein.
You should take in no more than 2 grams per 2.2lbs of body weight to avoid
kidney damage although this takes a long time to develop (15 years of high
protein intake). Animal proteins are the most complete form of protein.
Good animal sources are chicken, turkey and lean cuts of beef. Plant proteins
are incomplete sources and a variety of them must be consumed to get a
complete protein. Vegetarians run into this problem and depending on the
type of vegetarian, a protein or amino acid supplement may be needed.
Fats: The rest should come from essential fats. I know, this sounds like a lot
of fat in a diet but hear me out. The big thing is to decrease saturated
and trans fats and eat the essential ones.
But what are sources of essential
fats? Good sources are cold-water fish, peanuts, walnuts, avocados and
sunflower seeds. Also, using olive or canola oils for cooking will increase
essential fats in the diet. The most important thing to do is to stay
away from foods cooked in shortening, processed foods, deep-fried foods
and fatty cuts of meat.
Now the next question, how many calories should I eat a day to have a
healthy lifestyle?
Well that depends, is your weight ideal right now?
To maintain your current weight, there is a certain amount of calories
you must take in. To figure out your maintenance level, multiply your
weight in kg's (lbs/2.2) by 24 + 200 for males and 23 + 200 for females.
Dieting is very simple. To lose weight, take in fewer calories. About
500 less than your maintenance level is a safe start. To gain weight,
eat more than your maintenance level. It's as simple as that!

Puppy Nutrition When deciding on the nutritional components that will determine
the diet of my pups it is important to recognize and keep the following
key factors at the forefront:
- The pups will mature quickly, meaning that they will need the best diet
possible to allow them to safely grow with the aid of the necessary amounts
of the 6 major nutrients present
- Starting at birth and lasting for the first 5-6 weeks of life, my pups
will need a high quality Colostrum based formula due to them not being
able to ween at birth. After researching various formulas, I have selected
the following: Artho Formula
This is a blend of New Life Colostrum (vital for the pups when first born
to stimulate body functions), glucosamine sulfate, MSM, acetyl myristoleate,
lipase enzyme, coated with beta-lipid. Attributes
- Helps increase bioavailability and absorption of nutrients in the body
and helps decrease the bioavailability of iron to pathogens * MSM, a natural
form of sulfur helps in the prevention of free radical damage and helps
support joint and cartilage function * Glucosamine sulfate contains sulfur,
an element important to the biochemical synthesis of connective tissue
* Cetyl myristoleate helps support joint and cartilage function. It is
paired with a lipase enzyme in order to help increase its absorption and
assimilation in the body Due to the importance of Colostrum, below you
will find a detailed breakdown of the nutritional make up of this vital
component to my pup's healthy first few weeks of life.

Some believe that proper Colostrum supplementation should consist of more
than what is stated above, however, this is just opinion, and there is
no evidence that proves this theory.
- The Structural Growth period (0 to 18 months) is the most important stage
of the development of my pups meaning that during this phase of their lives,
it is crutial for them to consume high quality premium or home prepared
food.
- Along with my formula, I will be eventually feeding my pups a premium
puppy food up until they are 15 to 16 months of age, (Eagle Pack Large/Giant
Formula) which upon my research, appeared to be the best suited to the
needs of my Labrador pups. When considering a puppy food, one must take
into account the quality of ingredients, and what these ingredients mean
to the growth of my pups. For my pups to thrive, they need and will receive
the best possible ingredients which when combined will produce an optimum
food to enable them to grow safely, and consistently in regards to their
breed specifications.
Eagle Pack Analysis
The Eagle Pack puppy food I chose has in my opinion the best combination
of ingredients for consumption by my pups. Some of the key ingredients
include:
- 7 skin and coat conditioners consisting of; chicken fat, flax seed, avocado
oil, herring meal, lecithin, vitamin E, and biotin. This is a rare combination
and is only found in top quality puppy formula. The main purpose of these
conditioners is to allow for a nice shiny healthy coat with healthy skin
underneath
- Premium chicken meal, rice, and herring meal provide great taste as well
as extra protein and fat which allow for a great foundation for growth
In order to show the extensive process of creating a high calorie-quality
puppy food, below is the entire ingredient list with the above key ingredients
included: Chicken meal, brown rice, ground rice, rice bran, chicken fat
(preserved with mixed tocopherols and ascorbic acid), flax seed, dehydrated
alfalfa meal, avocado oil, herring meal, lecithin, brewers dried yeast,
natural flavoring, monosodium phosphate, choline chloride, rosemary extract,
sage extract, ferrous sulfate, dl-alpha tocopherol acetate (source of vitamin
E), zinc oxide, sodium selenite, manganous oxide, riboflavin supplement
(source of vitamin B complex), copper sulfate, zinc methionine, iron proteinate,
manganese proteinate, copper proteinate, cobalt proteinate, niacin, vitamin
B12 supplement, vitamin A supplement calcium pantothenate, d-biotin supplement,
pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), calcium iodate, thiamine mononitrate
(source of vitamin B1), folic acid, vitamin D3 supplement, bromelain, papain,
dried bacillus subtilis fermentation product, dried aspergillus oryzae
fermentation product.
Advantages
- Like most specific puppy formulated food, Eagle Pack's Puppy Formula
is designed for optimum growth. With high protein, nutrient and fat content,
the building blocks for continued growth are present and I would expect
my pups to do very well while consuming this product
- Low stool volume is a big advantage and is strictly due to the chicken
meal and rice formula allowing for better digestibility, which in turn,
allows for more nutrients and vitamins to be absorbed by the puppies
- Palatability is maintained by the presence of vitamin E and C, meaning
that no preservatives are used
- Eagle Pack Puppy Formula is pressure cooked to ensure that the highest
nutrient and vitamin level is present Guaranteed Analysis

Now that phase two of my nutrition plan is complete, I need to move to
phase three, which is the adult phase of life. I have always been a believer
in the commonly used phrase, "you are what you eat" and with this in mind,
I have researched the wide selection of adult dog food found on today's'
market and in doing so have come across a company that goes the extra mile
in regards to their research, dedication, and determination to provide
the best adult dog food on the market.
Royal Canin, a dog food manufacturer
based in Europe, stands head and shoulders above all other food manufacturers
based on their track record, attention to detail, testimonials, and their
determination to provide the best diet possible for any given breed. Yes,
this company has started to provide specific diets for specific breeds
based on the differing needs that different breeds incur.
Knowing this fact, made it impossible for me not to choose this manufacturer
to provide my Labrador with a life long healthy diet. Labrador Retriever
30™ Formula coupled with love an all the affection I can give, will
provide my Labrador the optimum foundation for a long healthy mischievous
life. (I can't wait!) Labrador Retriever 30™ Formula Unlike other
similarly sized dogs, the Labrador tends to have less muscle mass, and
an ability to gain weight just by looking at the food dish.
Ingredients List

- Contains antioxidants such as glucosamine and chondroitin to aid in joint
maintenance
- Contains taurine which has been proven to aid in heart health
- A high protein level allows for muscle mass maintenance
- Specific components when combined together have been proven to slow down
the aging process. Some of these include; vitamins C and E, taurine, zinc,
selenium, chondroitin, and other antioxidents
- Meets all standards provided by the Association of American Feed Control
Officials (AAFCO) The final stage of my nutrition plan is based on the
nutritional requirements for my dog when he becomes a senior. (9-10 years
of age) Although we do not like thinking of our dogs one day becoming seniors,
getting old is one of life's few guarantees and it is because of this fact
that we need to look out for the well being of our pets when they reach
this point of their lives.
After researching the hundreds of possible senior based dog foods, I have
decided to keep my Labrador on the Labrador Retriever 30™ Formula.
I have decided this because this food has all the necessary components
that senior dogs need and I feel that my Labrador will do very well on
this food in his elder years. Also by not switching food, I avoid the potential
of temporary setbacks during the transition from adult to senior foods.
Advantages
- We all know that as dogs get older, they tend to spend more of their
time sprawled on the couch: therefore, by feeding my couch potato Labrador
Retriever 30™ Formula, his fat intake will remain low and his protein
intake will remain high to help him retain his muscle mass
- Joint protection will be aided by the presence of glucosamine and chondroitin
- In order to aid the digestive tract chicory extract has been added to
help regulate this vital body system. (fructo-oligosaccharides) Has your
dog been a really good boy lately???

Nut Nutrition Information For Fitness Energy.
As a young aspiring bodybuilder who was just starting out learning a lot of different methods of building muscle, I was taught "by experts" that fat in the diet was taboo. Any kind of fat. It didn't matter the source. It was just bad. They were wrong. If you still believe in this myth, I hope I can change your mind after reading this article.
When you combine the "labrador beg" which usually wins him something from the human supper table, with the lazy metabolism and chronic greed of the Labrador, you get the "porky Labrador." This obviously is bad news and can promote numerous disease factors such as bloat, obesity, poor joints, etc. Taking all these factors into account, Royal Canin set out to develop a specifically formulated food for the Labrador retriever. They determined that by Promoting high protein and low fat, the Labrador would receive the building blocks to a well balanced diet and would be most likely to hold a proper bodyweight in relation to their specific height and activity level.
The fats I am talking about are from nuts. Peanuts, walnuts, almonds and
all other nuts. Being mainly composed of unsaturated fat provide an excellent
source of energy. They are also rich in nutrients that are lacking from
most people's diets. Nuts also have phytochemicals, which help prevent
cancer, diabetes and hypertension. High in natural fiber. As a whole, nuts
are a very healthy nutrition treat that tastes good.
As a bodybuilder that is trying to gain muscular weight, nuts can provide
the extra calories that are needed. You can snack on them between meals.
They are easy to take along with you anywhere.
For the bodybuilder that is trying to lose fat, nuts fit into your low
carbohydrate day. And you don't have to feel guilty eating them. The key
is to replace carbohydrate calories with the calories you would be getting
from the nuts.
Women and Nuts In a controlled study, postmenopausal women who ate a bag
of low-salt soy nuts a day had a rather great reduction in blood pressure.
Each bag had 25 grams of soy protein. You can find soy nuts at most grocery
stores.
Nutrition Breakdown of a bag of almonds. ¼ cup
Calories 200, from fat 150 Total Fat 18g 2g saturated Carbohydrates 7g
Protein 7g
The US Department of Agriculture did a study with nut eaters and non-nut
eaters and found even though the nut eaters consumed more energy calories
they actually had a lower BMI (body mass index) than the non-nut eaters.
In summary, the Almighty would have never created nuts if they didn't have
a useful propose in life. When was the last time you seen a squirrel scampering
across the ground and suddenly falling down and having a heart attack.

It is a must for all of us to be conscious of the proper nourishment that
our body needs. While all of us are aware that it is important to have
an intake of three complete meals per day, with at least snacks in between,
many, though, are not very conscious of meeting the body's daily nutritional
needs, while attending to their daily menu. Knowing the importance of balancing
each meal according to the necessary nourishment needed by our body will
help greatly in minimizing risks of disease, sickness or infections. It
would also minimize even physical, mental and emotional stress.
Now that we realize that proper strategizing of our daily meals to meet
up with the required nutritional needs of our bodies, let's begin going
back to the lessons we have learned about the GO, GROW and GLOW FOODS way,
way back in our childhood education.
To meet our body's daily energy needs, in order to minimize risks of chronic
disease, adults should get 45% - 65% of their calories from carbohydrates,
20%-35% from fat, (the GO foods of our childhood studies), and 10% - 35%
from protein. This is from the newest report on recommendations for healthy
eating from the National Academies' Institute of Medicine.
We must also watch out for the size of our protein portion. Most women
need a daily intake of only about 6 ounces (cooked) of meat, chicken, fish
or a substitute like cheese or eggs. Each one should look out for their
daily consumption of protein. Excess protein can mean extra fat, and high
amounts of protein may increase calcium losses in the urine.
Raw food and fresh juices have remarkable cleansing and regenerating effect
on the entire system, as they retain all their nutrients, which might get
destroyed while processing and cooking. And of course, it is very important
to keep track of our natural vitamin intake. Eat 5 or more servings of
fruits and vegetables per day, especially those high in Vitamin C, Vitamin
A, beta-carotene, and fiber. In general, a serving is 1 small piece of
fruit, half a cup of cooked or canned fruits and vegetables, or 1 cup raw.
Minerals in our body should also be part of our menu for our well-balanced
constitution. Aim to eat one of the rich sources of iron two to three times
a week. Body absorbs only 20-40% of the iron available in meat sources,
but only 5-20% of the iron from vegetable sources and egg. If you eat a
mixed diet including fruits, vegetables, meat and fish your body will absorb
15-20% of iron in the food.
So now, we remember the GLOW foods our youth?
A little tip for women: If you're in your childbearing years, get at least
0.4 milligram (400 micrograms) of folic acid daily to reduce the risk of
having a child with a neural tube defect. Excellent sources of this are
spinach, broccoli, chickpeas, romaine lettuce, wheat germ, and fortified
breakfast cereals (25 percent of the US RDA per ounce). If you're pregnant,
take a folic acid supplement. Women can be helped by diet and lifestyle
changes in managing PMS like eating less refined sugar, drinking less caffeine,
avoiding nicotine, avoiding alcohol, avoiding salt.
If you follow a diet, which is heavy on dark colored vegetables, unprocessed
whole grains and lean meats, you can't go wrong. Eat sufficient protein,
lots of vegetables & fruits and minimal processed carbohydrates. There's
absolutely no magic here, folks, just intelligent, planned & scheduled
nutrient consumption.

Cancer Diet: Feasting on the Four Food Groups - A Mesothelioma Patient's Guide to Nutrition
At some point during our childhood we have all been told to eat our vegetables.
Forcing down tasteless green beans and brussels sprouts were supposed to
make us taller and stronger. Well, so it is for mesothelioma patients.
Diet is often an overlooked subject for cancer patients, but eating the
right nutritional foods for strength and energy is just as important as
taking the proper medication.
Mesothelioma patients undergoing treatment must follow a special cancer
diet devised by their nutritionists. Cancer diets involve eating the correct
amounts of protein and calories as well as drinking the right amount of
water to keep the ailing body replenished and energized. The body needs
plenty of nourishment when it is going through chemotherapy or even when
the patient is taking certain medications.
Doctors and nutritionists may also recommend a special cancer diet because
many mesothelioma patients tend to lose their appetites due to worry over
their condition. Also, those who are undergoing treatment may choose not
to eat because of the unpleasant side effects they may experience. Chemotherapy,
for example, and even some particular medications may cause an imbalance
of nutrients that must be corrected in order to keep the body as strong
as possible and to keep the patient from losing an excessive amount of
weight. Other side effects of mesothelioma treatment include nausea, vomiting,
dry mouth, a change in the sense of smell or taste, and/or constipation.
However, this is where the similarities between the average 65-year-old
and 25-year-old end because while the latter may be able to get away
with experimenting, the former cannot. In other words, a 25-year-old
consumer may add energy bars to their eating regimen and realize in a
few months that they're really eating glorified, calorie-rich candy bars.
A 65-year-old consumer does not have that same luxury to try, and possibly
err, when it comes to making nutritional choices. His or her choices
must be wise and relevant from the start, particularly since older people
tend to suffer from diminished appetite, and often have poorer access
to balanced nutrition than their younger counterparts.
Below are some of the important nutrients patients are encouraged to include
in their mesothelioma diet:
• Protein is important for any cancer patient because it helps repair
tissue damaged by surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. Protein also helps
maintain a strong and healthy immune system, lowering a mesothelioma patient's
risk of infection after aggressive cancer treatments. The National Cancer
Institute recommends increasing protein in a cancer diet with cheese, milk,
ice cream, yoghurt, eggs, nuts, peanut butter, meats and fish.
• Fats are an essential part of the cancer diet because they supply
the body with the necessary energy it needs while undergoing treatment.
The amount of fats (meaning the number of calories) a cancer diet should
consist of is dependent on a mesothelioma patient's age and body size.
The National Cancer Institute recommends increasing caloric intake with
such foods as butter, milk, cheese, honey, sugar, granola and dried fruits.
• Water is another essential element of the cancer diet. Without a
substantial amount of water, the body will dehydrate. It is important that
anyone undergoing cancer treatment receive enough water to keep their bodies
hydrated and replenished.
The details of every patient's mesothelioma diet will vary. Some patients
will need to incorporate more fat into their diets, while others may need
more protein. It is important that patients devise a cancer diet under
the guidance of their doctor and nutritionist to ensure that they receive
the proper amount of nutrients to improve their quality of life.

While America has given birth to the song "Young at Heart",
and the phrase "you're as young as you feel!" can be heard from coast
to coast by millions of people, demographic trend point firmly toward
the other direction: aging.
Currently, the 65+ population comprises slightly more than 12% (35 million)
of the total US population. By 2030, this percentage is predicted to
almost double to just below 20% (71 million)[i]. In other words, within
a generation, an unprecedented demographic reality will exist in the
US: 1 in 5 Americans will be older than 65.
This is indeed news worth celebrating, because it means that more Americans
are living longer, healthier lives than ever before. Yet this trend also
presents some very real health-related problems that American society
must solve.
Various sectors are frenetically trying to position themselves to deal
with this aging demographic inevitability. The dental care field is loudly
lobbying to increase awareness and resource-support for age-related ailments
such as defective denture and reduced saliva-flow conditions[ii]. At
the same time, the allied health care field is similarly trying - and
admittedly struggling -- to develop the immense resources, such as many
more doctors and nurses, who will somehow absorb the imminent and overwhelming
old age-related demand for surgical procedures and other health care
commodities[iii].
Yet while the dental and health sectors strive to adjust to this demographic
trend, the nutritional sector has not kept pace. A quick look at any
health food store shelf will see energy bars and powders that are (according
to their marketing images) suitable only for high-performance (e.g. young)
consumers. Similarly, the nutrition sector has not done a good job at
destroying the myth that macronutrients such as protein are essential
parts of all healthy diets - regardless of age.
The nutrition sector's general neglect of the senior community is something
that is just barely beginning to show as the population ages, and as
the "baby boomer" generation of 76 million strong moves towards retirement[iv].
However, it is inevitable that this service gap will become larger as
the future unfolds. Essentially, tens of millions of seniors are going
to need to find new and innovative nutrition solutions possibly for the
first time in their lives.
The prospects that face a 65-year-old searching for a nutrition solution
are in some ways much the same as those facing a 25-year-old: there are
an array of promised solutions on the market, including energy bars,
drinks, and supplements.
This is a serious problem that the nutritional sector must accept and
take ownership of. This means that more than simple awareness is needed
actual tangible solutions are required. The basic fact is that senior
citizens - like all other age groups - require balanced nutrition, and
for many of them, the best and most convenient way to access it is through
nutritional supplements.
This much-delayed awareness does seem, however, to be abating. There
are currently innovative companies that are creating nutritional supplements
suitable for all ages, regardless of physical activity. This suitability
is the result of a carefully balanced protein blend that captures all
essential amino acids. Since many seniors continue to lose nitrogen and
thus protein as they age, it is incredibly important that seniors access
ways to compensate for this gradual loss.
These low-calorie, carbohydrate-free, fat-free nutritional supplements
also help seniors avoid adding unwanted body fat that would weaken muscle
mass and destabilize body strength and energy levels. Furthermore, the
ideal product would be available in liquid form, allowing seniors with
dentures or other tooth concerns to easily ingest a serving without anxiety.
The fact that America's population is aging is just that: a fact. It
is not an opinion, an educated guess, or a possible expectation. It will
happen, and it is essential that America's seniors be provided with the
solutions that they need in order to continue living full, happy lives.
The dental and health care fields are already hard at work positioning
themselves, as best that they can right now, to absorb this unprecedented
demographic change. Thanks to a very small - but hopefully growing number
- of senior-friendly supplements, there is finally a reason to add the
nutrition field to this list as well.
