A cataract is the clouding of the eye's lens and is one of the most commonly-performed procedures in the U.S. The federal government spends more than $3.4 billion annually treating cataracts through the Medicare program. However, it has been estimated that, if the progression of this eye disease could be slowed down by a decade or so, a 45% drop in annual cataract surgery would follow.

On reflection, though, the nutrition link with secondary cataract is a valid connection to make.

Good nutrition can play a preventative role in delaying the onset and/or progression of the cataract. Here we are referring to age-related cataracts which occur when protein clusters up in the lens and causes opacity, or when the lens discolors due to the effects of aging.


Not all cataracts however are age-related, and therefore the nutrition link is not as important in the case of:



It could be argued that eating a healthy diet in the first place creates a virtuous circle by reducing the incidence of diabetic retinopathy, thereby reducing the number of surgical procedures to rectify the condition and reducing, in turn, the incidence of secondary cataract formation.


Cataract formation, however, is predominantly a condition associated with aging and is an acquired vision defect. Lifestyle changes, then, and changing patterns of behavior – stopping smoking, wearing sunglasses to block out harmful ultraviolet rays and eating a healthy diet – can all contribute to the prevention and retardation of cataract formation.


Let's examine more closely the connection between nutrition and cataracts. Lutein and zeaxanthin, which assist in the absorption of Vitamins C and E to counter damaging free radical activity in the eye, are found, like Vitamin C, in colorful fruit and vegetables. Kale and Collard greens top the list of good food sources for both lutein and zeaxanthin; broccoli, corn and peas are fairly good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin while persimmons and tangerines offer the least amount of these beneficial carotenoids.Nutrition promises to be one important weapon in the prevention and delayed progression of cataracts. All vitamins perform different jobs within the body and work with your body's metabolism to increase energy levels. Many studies have proven that certain vitamins can also prevent disease such as vitamins A, C, and E, also called antioxidants, which assist with the prevention of coronary artery disease by helping to prevent plaque build up on artery walls.


Your body also needs minerals and trace elements which are used in many different body processes. Chlorine is essential for digestion, calcium and phosphorus are essential for strong bones and healthy teeth. Your body also needs salt, but not more than 2400 milligrams per day, as it can increase your blood pressure.


Make sure that you eat food as close to their natural state as possible and avoid excessive amounts of animal protein. Eat at least two cups of fruits and two cups of vegetables daily and drink a gallon of water spread out over your day.

Minneapolis Schools Work to Improve Physical Education and Nutritional Programs


Minneapolis Schools Honored by Governors

Minneapolis Schools have made numerous changes in order to create better physical education and nutritional programs with the goal to make the healthiest schools in the state. Minneapolis Schools were honored for the many steps that they have taken to improve student fitness at all the schools. Minneapolis Schools have instituted several changes including: changes in school lunch menus, physical education taught through a fitness approach, and participation in the President’s Active Lifestyle Award program.

These changes were mentioned by Minnesota State Governor Tim Pawlenty when he was speaking about healthy schools across the state at a Saint Paul YMCA with Arkansas governor, Mike Huckabee.

The governors spoke to students about the importance of exercise and nutrition. Governor Huckabee was there to provide an example of how exercise and proper eating can work; Huckabee has lost over 100 pounds. To show the change Huckabee’s weight loss has had on his life, the governors briefly carried a student on their backs to show how much extra weight Huckabee had been carrying with him.


Minneapolis Schools Take Part in the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award

The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award program is designed to help students in the Minneapolis Schools make and keep their commitment to living an active life. The program helps students make realistic goals about fitness. This program helps the students by setting rules to follow and providing fitness logs so students can track their progress. Students who participate in the program are eligible for Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards when they perform activity beyond the set fitness goal of sixty minutes a day for youths under 18 at least 5 days per week, for a total of 6 weeks. As an alternative you can count your daily activity steps using a pedometer.


A pedometer is a small device that automatically counts the number of steps a student takes; many Minneapolis Schools physical education programs have them. The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award program sets different pedometer goals for different ages and genders: Girls 6 to 17 - At least 11,000 steps a day; Boys 6 to 17 - At least 13,000 steps a day or Adults 18 or older - At least 8,500 steps a day


The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award program in Minneapolis Schools allows lots of different activities to count towards the awards, as long as the activity uses muscle groups and burns energy. Examples of appropriate activities are taking a long walk, playing basketball, tennis or taking an aerobics class. Even doing chores around the house if you do these activities in addition to what you normally do. The goal of the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award program is to have students meet or exceed the daily activity goal of sixty minutes a day for children under 18 at least 5 days a week, for a total of 6 weeks but participants can take up to 8 weeks to complete the program.


An important element of the program is having students keep a personal activity log. The online personal activity log allows the students to track how long through the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award website. Minneapolis Schools have allowed participants to uses school computers to participate in the program. The Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards are awarded to those participants who have reached their fitness goals. The online log will automatically inform the student when an award has been reached, after that the students can order the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award online or by mail. The program always the students to continue earning awards or move into the more difficult challenge level of the Presidential Champions program.

Bodybuilding nutrition is not just a matter of what you ingest, but more importantly, the time fame of when you ingest these precious nutrients.

The Role of Nutrition in Reducing AMD-linked Vision Loss

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an acquired vision disorder and, together with cataracts, a leading cause of legal blindness in the over 60s. Since AMD affects the central part of the retina (macula), which is responsible for acuity of vision, many activities, including reading, writing, sports and driving can become extremely difficult tasks for sufferers to perform.


Type II diabetes is increasingly common in the Western world often as the result of over-eating on junk food. By raising blood sugar levels, diabetes can cause changes in the retina severe enough to impair both visual acuity and color vision.


What part, then, can nutrition play in relation to this eye disease? Given that approximately 10 million Americans suffer from early onset AMD and half-a-million from significant loss of vision due to late-stage AMD, the question is an urgent one. The disease's severity and irreversibility adds to the urgency.


Research has suggested that AMD develops with the reduction of pigment in the macula. This retinal layer plays a dual role: it filters out harmful blue wavelengths of light and mops up free radicals found in large concentrations in this area. Free radicals damage the cell membranes and the macular pigment.


The theory goes that nutrition, in particular certain antioxidant compounds, can reduce the harmful effects of free radicals and, as a consequence, may act to slow the progression of AMD. A recent large clinical trial conducted by the National Eye Institute (NEI) supports this theory.


Let's examine its methods and findings. The effect of a high dose antioxidant, vitamin combination (C & E) plus zinc, was tested on participating patients with advanced signs and symptoms of AMD. The doses tested were as follows:



The findings supported the hypothesis that high levels of antioxidants are an effective treatment in slowing the progression of AMD. For this high-risk group of patients it was found that the supplement reduced the risk of developing advanced AMD by about one-quarter and reduced vision loss by about one-fifth.


The NEI concluded that, for people over the age of 55 who display signs of intermediate to late vision loss due to AMD, taking a high-dose vitamin combination plus zinc similar to that used in the clinical trial, is highly desirable. 300,000 people at high risk from AMD- associated vision loss would benefit from the treatment. It has indeed proven to be an effective means of limiting the disease in patients with advanced signs and symptoms of AMD.


Given this positive association between nutrition and AMD, it is interesting and helpful to compare the levels of Vitamin C and E provided by eating five daily servings of nuts and seeds, with the dosage taken in the trial.Choosing pigment-rich fruits and vegetables (oranges, strawberries, green peppers, broccoli) can provide more than 100 mg. Vitamin C daily. Two daily servings of nuts and seeds (almonds, peanuts, sunflower seeds) can provide 8-14 mg. Vitamin E (11.9-20.8 IU).


The above recommended dietary allowances (RDA), however, fall well short of the levels associated with health benefits to vision (see doses above) illustrated by the WEI's Age-Related Eye Disease Study. This is not to say, though, that good food sources of antioxidants should be overlooked in favor of supplements: the bowels and colon benefit from the anti-carcinogenic properties of fiber-rich foods.


The wisest option for those who display early signs of AMD, have a genetic predisposion for the disease and are over 50, is to eat a healthy diet and supplement this with good-quality, organically-sourced nutrients. Such a dietary regime is vitally important when put into the context of current average intake. Over half of Americans get much less than 100% of their Vitamin C RDA from their diet and more than 90%, less than 100% of their Vitamin E RDA.


Finally, it is important to emphasise that the use of good nutrition based on high levels of antioxidants cannot turn back the clock and reverse the damage already caused by AMD. However, many patients with AMD can experience a delay in the advancement of their condition if a diet high in antioxidant-rich foods and supplements is adopted.
