A goal is the result or achievement toward which effort
is directed. Without setting goals in exercise or nutrition, there is
far less value and purposeful direction; and they need to be measurable
and realistic. For example, a thin teenager weighing 120 pounds wishing
to weight 220-pounds of muscle is both specific and measurable. However,
he cannot hope to achieve such a physique, especially not soon and probably
not without growth-enhancing drugs. Therefore, in this instance, the
goal to gain 100 pounds of muscle is specific, it is measurable, but
it is unrealistic.
What is lean to one person may not be lean to another... or perhaps it
is "too lean". Once the individual obtains a supposed state of leanness,
will that person know that he has achieved that goal or will his perception
of what he thinks is "lean" change because of higher standards and greater
expectations? On the other hand, if a trainee indicated that he wants to
reduce body fat to a level of ten percent, then he has a measurable goal
- one that can be quantified.
Next, to achieve goals better, trainees must provide a measurement and
do so in the smallest amount necessary and within reason relative to past
accomplishments. Don't aim for something greater than you could ever have
achieved in the past. Moreover, the more distant the goal, and the smaller
the increments, the more likely the success of obtaining the goal. But
it should be noted that a goal must require some degree of effort and challenge.
If the goal is too small or easy to obtain, there is little incentive or
sense of accomplishment or pride.
Goals can be measured in terms of outcome and performance. An outcome goal
refers to that which a person is aiming to achieve, such as lifting five
pounds more in the bench press next workout or a far greater weight over
the course of several months. There is little flexibility in this type
of goal - either it is achieved or it is not. Performance goals refer to
the process through which a person achieves those goals, including both
the short- and long-term.
Performance goals are much more flexible, and
allows a person to reorganize a strategy from day to day in order to meet
the outcome goal(s). Performance goals are associated with less anxiety,
since there is flexibility and, as a result, should be emphasized in an
exercise and nutrition program. It can be upsetting not to achieve an outcome
goal, but if all the steps leading up to the outcome were done to the best
of your ability, it is easy to maintain motivation in preparing for the
next outcome goal.
When determining a long-term goal, a strategy of immediate, short-term
goals (performance goals) must be considered. For example, if you desire
a ten-pound increase on the best bench press, how will you get there? This
is accomplished by creating a workout schedule, a long-term plan of increasing "x" pounds/ounces
to the bar each workout until you achieve the extra ten pounds. The plan
may need to be reevaluated then re-designed - particularly if you fail
to increase the weight by "x" pounds/ounces during one of the workouts,
and falling short in the end. It could be further stated that creating
a goal strategy in exercise is very similar to a marketing or business
plan in that goals may be established, but they may also need reformulating
on a regular basis to reflect current facts of finance, the economy, sales,
customer satisfaction, etc.
GOAL SETTING PRINCIPLES AND STRATEGY
Set Specific Goals. The goal must be measurable, such as "bench press 275
pounds" by a certain date rather than "increase the bench press" and without
a concrete date in mind.
Set Difficult and Realistic Goals. The goal must be within reach, yet challenging
in order to increase mental arousal and motivation. Easy goals will not
be motivating, yet goals that are nearly impossible will hinder motivation
for future workouts. Goals must reflect your genetic ability accurately;
as strength and size increases, the ability to match past goals will diminish.
Establish Short-term Goals. Each main goal must consist of sub-goals or
short-term goals. Before a person can increase chest measurement by an
inch, or bench-press an additional 50 pounds, he must progress in smaller
amounts. Being able to see patterns in those amounts (your results over
a particular period of time), or lack thereof, provides valuable data and
feedback in your ability to achieve long-term goals during a specific time
frame. Not being able to achieve short-term goals provides further information
as to what is not working and the need for a new plan of short-term goals
in order to achieve the long-term goal.
Develop Goal-Achievement Strategies. A trainee cannot achieve short- or
long-term goals without knowing how he or she eventually will get there.
In order to lose an inch off the waist, you must first lose a quarter-inch,
then a half-inch, etc., and each step requires a certain amount of exercise
and a proper eating plan. These aspects determine your daily or immediate
goals.
Create Backup Plans of Action. What happens if a short-term goal is not
reached? If something goes wrong, is it probable that the long-term goal
will be reached? It will be difficult to get back on track if a backup
plan of action is not established to correct any minor setbacks. If the
goal is to lose a quarter-inch off the waist during the first month, and
the trainee only lost one-eighth inch, the chances of losing a quarter-inch
during the next phase of the strategy is highly unlikely (unless exercise
is increased and eating is decreased). It will be necessary to rethink
the strategy and decide what must be done in order to get back on track.
But rather than waiting for the possibility of failure, strategize ahead
of time and anticipate failure or what could go wrong.
Individual Personality Considerations. Prior to establishing goals, personality
must be considered. Is the person a high-achiever or a low-achiever? Does
the person have the commitment and can he or she maintain that commitment?
Can the person sustain the motivation to reach a difficult goal that may
be a year away while paying attention to diet and intense exercise during
that time on a daily/weekly basis? Does the person have the maturity and
intellect to work through any problems leading to each goal? How does the
individual accept failure - as a learning experience or another "nail in
the coffin" of defeat?
Provide for Goal Evaluation. At the end of each short- and long-term goal,
evaluate performance, dedication, motivation, and well you did to achieve
(or surpass) your goals. From this information it will be easier to establish
future goals, and to make goals easier or more challenging, by learning
from mistakes, failures, and successes. Also, evaluate the backup plans
of action and if any of those steps needed to be implemented, your problem-solving
skills, what went right, what went wrong, and any factors that were not
considered.
Provide Goal Support. Share goals with others, such as a loved one, friends,
a mentor, or associates on the Internet. Telling people about what you
intend to achieve increases support and keeps you on the path to prove
your ability rather than experiencing humiliation or embarrassment from
backing down when the going gets tough. Regular updates on a long-term
goal, and how each short-term goal is proceeding will keep you in check
and sustain motivation.

Golf Nutrition Is Not An Oxymoron...Listen Up
Golf nutrition is still a relatively new concept. However,
everybody knows that leading athletes in the NBA and NFL quite often
have special diets and specific nutrition programs to help them perform
at their peak. The reasons who golf nutrition is still in it's' infancy
in the golf game is easy to see. To start with nutrition in sports goes
hand in hand with the training and physical exercise program for the
particular sport. In golf, exercises are still a very new concept although
many professionals have already embraced it as an important part of their
golf game.
For years golf has had the image of being a leisure sport to be played
by the rich and the sort of people who do not just carelessly break into
a sweat. Then came golfers of the likes of the legendary Tiger Woods.
For the first time in the sport, leading golfers were very young and extremely
physically fit. Since then, the game has never been the same again and
as exercise continues to take center stage golf nutrition has to grow alongside
it.
So the typical nutrition recommendations that go with weight training for
strength will be found in the special golf nutrition that leading experts
are recommending to golfers.
This is the direction that the wonderful game of golf has taken and it
seems that there is no turning back for any golfer who wants to improve
their game. You just have to consider golf nutrition alongside your current
golf exercise program.
Mike Pedersen is one of the top golf fitness experts in the country, author of the Ultimate Golf Fitness Guide, and founder of several cutting-edge online golf fitness sites. Take a look at his just released golf fitness dvds at his golf fitness site - Perform Better Golf.
Marion Nestle Paulette Goddard Professor of Nutrition and Food Studies, and Public Health, New York University Author, Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health (2002) Safe Food: Bacteria, Biotechnology and Bioterrorism (2003), both from the University of California Press
Golf nutrition is usually part and parcel of a golf exercise program and is really designed to enhance energy and strength even as the exercise program works to build up the golfer. The sort of golf nutrition that will become common will not be very different from what we see in other sports. The idea will be to have a diet of energy foods and foods that will help in building up strength and endurance for a better golf game.
When was the last time you consumed soda? Most likely, it wasn't that long
ago. You may even drink several cans or bottles each day. In the U.S, carbonated
soft drinks are a huge business. Every year, they generate more than $50
billion in annual sales. Two companies - Coca-Cola and PepsiCo -- dominate
the soda market. They are in a constant battle for the market share of
the product - a conflict known as the "Cola War." Hundreds of millions
of dollars are spent annually for advertising.
Not surprisingly, the companies are always looking for new markets. And, increasingly, they are directing their attention to adolescents and children. For decades, schools have allowed soda to be sold in on-site vending machines. So, generating income for schools from the sale of soda is not a new policy. However, in the early 1990s, pouring-rights contracts emerged. These put a different spin on the sale of soda in schools. And, over the years, they have increasingly gained in popularity. In return for the exclusive sale of one-company's product, pouring-rights contracts give school districts large lump-sum payments and extra payments and/or gifts over a period of five or 10 years.
The contracts provide additional incentives for consumption levels that surpass quotas. So, they tend to encourage the consumption of higher amounts of soda, even by the youngest students. In one of the most extravagant contracts, a 53-school district in Colorado, gave up its Pepsi vending machines and signed an $8 million, 10 year agreement with Coca-Cola that included cash bonuses when sale targets were exceeded and a new car for a senior with high grades and perfect attendance. But, even the smaller contracts tend to be generous. The goal is to create brand loyalty among young people - a loyalty that could continue throughout their lives. Without a doubt, administrators in cash-strapped school districts have a litany of reasons to be enticed. But, adherence to the contracts may be taken to extremes.
For example, a Georgia student was suspended when he wore a shirt with a Pepsi logo to a student government-sponsored "Coke Day" rally. So what is contained in a typical soda that may be found in a school vending machine? A 20-ounce screw-top plastic bottle of soda has 275 calories. While there are other ingredients such as flavorings and caffeine, the soda is primarily sugar and carbonated water. High in calories and zero in nutritional value, it is the quintessential "junk food." The Center for Science in the Public Interest refers to soft drinks as "liquid candy." Since the bottles have screw-tops, the liquid may be sipped throughout the day, thereby bathing the teeth with sugar and upsetting dentists. While it is unclear how many sodas a typical student might drink in one day, one is not a bad guess.
Just one a day means 1925 empty calories per week. Heavy users drink more than one soda per day. Children who begin drinking soda when they are still young tend to increase the amount they consume through adolescence into young adulthood. Many children drink more soda than juice or milk. While juice and whole milk contain about the same amount of calories as soda, they contain useful vitamins and minerals. Juice and milk are far better nutritional options. Although the relationship cannot be proven conclusively, soda consumption correlates with obesity. Children who drink sodas take in more calories, are fatter and have worse diets than those who don't. If you need to lose weight, start by replacing sodas with water, fat free or 1% milk, or 100% juice (but not too much).

Nutrition is extremely important for any young person, especially an
athletic one, and even more so during the developmental years of their
life. Whether your child is involved in soccer or football, gymnastics
or swimming or Little League, he or she needs a good nutritive balance
in order to be successful in any endeavor. It cannot be stressed enough
that anorexia and bulimia, chronic malnutrition, are absolutely devastating
not only to an athlete's career, but also to overall health and well-being.
You should always watch for decreased eating in your child, no matter
how robust and healthy they may seem.
Interestingly enough, very few scientific studies on the nutrition of
child athletes have been published. You don't really need to be a scientist
(or an alchemist) to create a healthy menu for your active youth, though.
All you need is a little bit of creativity, and, of course, the facts
about different kinds of foods. As is dictated by common sense, it's
necessary for kids who are active to consume more caloric energy than
their couch potato counterparts. Sometimes, they must take in several
hundred - or even a thousand - healthy calories more than the average
child, depending upon their age and upon the intensity of the sport they're
participating in.
So what types of food should you give your gymnast? I'll help you out.
In General
Everyday nutrition calls for a healthy balance of protein, calcium, vitamins
and minerals. The most important type of caloric intake for a child athlete
is carbohydrates. Without carbohydrates, the body cannot readily replenish
its stores of energy in the muscles and in the liver.
Cutting-edge research from leading scientists has brought us new ways to
recover many of these nutrients. By taking advantage of modern-day patented
pharmaceutical-grade supplements, your body can finally regain many of
the nutrients that are needed to ensure the best possible physical condition,
to repair parts that are damaged and to slow down the aging process.
Simple carbohydrates, like those found in most candies and chocolates,
are usually not enough: they are used up too quickly and if eaten before
competing can cause changes in blood pressure (of course, you can splurge
every once in a while -- just not constantly).
Pasta, bread, and rice -- in other words, foods from grain -- are best
overall for carbohydrate intake. Fruits and vegetables are excellent
sources of carbs and of vitamins and minerals. Dairy products are especially
important for building strong bones and teeth. Meat -- or meat substitute
-- is needed for protein intake.
Did you know that if you know... if you put beans and rice together,
they create a perfect protein?
Most plants don't produce all of the proteins we as human beings need
to survive -- but if they are eaten at the same time, they give you all
the protein you need. That means you can have refried beans with rice,
or meatless chili with rice, or a variety of other combinations, if indeed
you don't want to eat beef, chicken, pork, or other animal proteins.
Before an Event
Approximately two to three hours before your child is to participate
in an event, or indeed in training, you should have them eat a light
meal filled with carbohydrates: a bowl of spaghetti, a sandwich with
lettuce and a glass of fruit juice, carrot sticks and a piece of cheese,
or something else to their taste. It's always advisable to have them
exert themselves on a slightly empty stomach, because they may experience
cramping or fatigue otherwise.
During an Event
During an event or practice, it is vitally important that your athlete
remain hydrated. When he or she sweats profusely, water is lost to the
atmosphere via evaporation. A lot of vapor is also lost through deep
breathing.
This is the body's natural cooling system. It needs to be replenished,
just like the cooling elements in your air conditioner. Every twenty
to thirty minutes during strenuous exercise, your child should drink
six to eight ounces of water. A sports drink is acceptable sometimes,
so long as it has few carbohydrates (under 15-20 grams is best). Even
diluted fruit juice (one part water to one part juice) will work well.
Keep in mind that dehydration is a very serious problem with athletes
-- and when they begin to feel thirsty, it may already be too late. Whether
or not they are thirsty, you should keep them hydrated with water, juice,
or sports drinks.
After an Event
After an event, it's a good idea to let your child have something full
of carbohydrates to eat - just like the pre-game meal. This will replenish
their energy stores and ease their recovery time.
With all of this, good luck!

Proper nutrition is fundamental to optimizing your health. By eating
the right foods, you help supply your body with the proper elements that
are needed to ensure superior health. When your body is in optimal health,
it is better able to repair parts that are damaged from sickness, injury
or disease. However, in our modern-day world "just eating right" may not
be sufficient. Modern agriculture has supplied us with an unprecedented
abundance of food. Ironically, this abundance and the underlying agricultural
intensification has created a new set of problems; poor soil quality. Furthermore,
long-haul transportation and crop-breeding practices are all believed to
be contributing to the drop in vitamins and minerals found in fruits and
vegetables.
Additionally, intense processing and sterilization of foods renders many
of their healthy nutrients and minerals biologically inactive. For example,
while the pasteurization of milk enables us to kill many pathogens that
would make us very sick, it also denatures and even destroys many of the
valuable nutrients that our bodies need to survive. The end result is that
we need to replace the components that have been lost so that we can again,
function at optimum levels.
I encourage you to research nutritional supplementation as one way to improve
health and provide missing elements that our modern-day diets can no longer
provide.
