Nutrition Articles, Tips and Information - Increased Nutrient Needs

Nutrition Or Training - Which Is More Important

Nutrition Or Training - Which Is More Important? By Tom Venuto, NSCA-CPT, CSCS , Legendary bodybuilding trainer Vince, "The Iron Guru" Gironda was famous for saying, "Bodybuilding is 80% nutrition!" But is this really true or is it just another fitness and bodybuilding myth passed down like gospel without ever being questioned? Which is really more important, nutrition or training? This IS an interesting question and I believe there is a definite answer:

For example, if you've been skipping meals and only eating 2 times per day, jumping your meal frequency up to 5 or 6 smaller meals a day will transform your physique very rapidly.

The first thing I would say is that you cannot separate nutrition and training. The two work together synergistically. Regardless of your goals - gaining muscle, losing fat, athletic conditioning, whatever -you will get less than-optimal or even non-existent results without paying attention paid to both. In fact, I like to look at gaining muscle or losing fat in three parts - weight training, cardio training and nutrition - with each part like a leg of a three legged stool. pull ANY one of the legs off the stool, and guess what happens?

In reality, it's impossible to put a specific percentage on which is more important - how could we possibly know such a number to the digit? Nutrition and training are both important, but at certain stages of your training progress, I do believe placing more attention on one component over the other can create larger improvements. Let me explain:

If you're still eating lots of processed fats and refined sugars, cutting them out and replacing them with good fats like the omega threes found in fish and unrefined foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains will make an enormous and noticeable difference in your physique very quickly.

If your diet is low in protein, simply adding a complete protein food like chicken breast, fish or egg whites at each meal will muscle you up fast. No matter how hard you train or what type of training routine you're on, it's all in vain if you don't provide yourself with the right nutritional support.

In beginners (or in advanced trainees who are still eating poorly), these changes in diet are more likely to result in great improvements than a change in training. The muscular and nervous systems of a beginner are unaccustomed to exercise. Therefore, just about any training program can cause muscle growth and strength development to occur because it's all a "shock" to the untrained body.

You can almost always find ways to tweak your nutrition to higher and higher levels, but once you've mastered all the nutritional basics, then further improvements in your diet don't have as great of an impact as those initial important changes... Eating more than six meals will have minimal effect. Eating more protein ad infinitum won't help. Once you're eating low fat, going to zero fat won't help more - it will probably hurt. If you're eating a wide variety of foods and taking a good multi vitamin/mineral, then more supplements probably wont help much either. If you're already eating natural complex carbs and lean proteins every three hours, there's not too much more you can do other than continue to be consistent day after day...

MORE on Increased Nutrient Needs

At this point, as an intermediate or advanced trainee who has the nutrition in place, changes in your training become much more important, relatively speaking. Your training must become downright scientific. Except for the changes that need to be made between an "off season" muscle growth diet and a "precontest" cutting diet, the diet won't and can't change much - it will remain fairly constant. But you can continue to pump up the intensity of your training and improve the efficiency of your workouts almost without limit. In fact, the more advanced you become, the more crucial training progression and variation becomes because the well-trained body adapts so quickly.

According to powerlifter Dave Tate, an advanced lifter may adapt to a routine within 1-2 weeks. That's why elite lifters rotate exercises constantly and use as many as 300 different variations on exercises. Strength coach Ian King says that unless you're a beginner, you'll adapt to any training routine within 3-4 weeks. Coach Charles Poliquin says that you'll adapt within 5-6 workouts. So, to answer the question, while nutrition is ALWAYS critically important, it's more important to emphasize for the beginner (or the person whose diet is still a "mess"), while training is more important for the advanced person... (in my opinion).

It's not that nutrition ever ceases to be important, the point is, further improvements in nutrition won't have as much impact once you already have all the fundamentals in place. Once you've mastered nutrition, then it's all about keeping that nutrition consistent and progressively increasing the efficiency and intensity of your workouts, and mastering the art of planned workout variation, which is also known as "periodization." The bottom line: There's a saying among strength coaches and personal trainers...

"You can't out-train a lousy diet!"

If your nutrition program is your weakest area, either because you're just starting out or you simply don't have the nutritional knowledge you know you need to get results, then be sure to take a look at the Burn The Fat program at:

San Jose Schools Changes School Nutrition And Limits Junk Food

Following in the footsteps of both federal and state trends to limit junk food and provide better nutrition to students, San Jose Schools will implement new some changes starting in September 2006. These changes may appear sudden but actually is part of a long term goal for improving student nutrition. San Jose Schools have been working to improve student nutrition over the past few years. San Jose Schools have already removed fried chips and carbonated beverages from all kindergarten-eighth grade schools. A lot of the changes occurring in September are a result of new federal laws.

The Wellness Policy is a nutrition program that is designed and approved by the school board.

The new policy states that for a school to receive federal funds for their school lunch program they must institute a Wellness Policy. In order to better meet these guidelines the San Jose Schools have created the SHAPE committee. The SHAPE committee is made up of school food service personnel, a school board member, district employees, health care professionals, concerned parents, and community members.

The Nutrition Policy

The Nutrition Policy states that all food on a San Jose Schools campus must meet the state nutritional guidelines for fat and sugar and fat content. The biggest effect of this policy for parents is that homemade baked goods will not be allowed on campus. San Jose Schools will make more snakes available at schools that meet these guidelines and provide a list of approved store bought snakes. Fundraisers that involve the sale of food items must be planned with and agreed to by the school. The San Jose Schools will actively encourage fundraisers that are not based around food sale but instead are based around physical activity. All San Jose Schools, including high schools, will ban carbonated soft drinks this school year. Classroom parties with food will be limited to one per month.

Nutrition Guidelines for Foods Available at San Jose Schools

The San Jose School Board is planning to adopt a series of new guidelines covering the nutritional concerns of students. This is done in order to meet to the growing concerns about student health and reducing childhood obesity. The San Jose School Board believes that there was a growing disparity between the foods available at school and the health curriculum. Strict guidelines have been adopted all foods and beverages sold to students, including foods and beverages provided through the San Jose School's food service program, student stores, vending machines, or fundraisers.

The new policy also set guidelines for the San Jose School's staff in using food items as a reward; the staff will be encouraged to use healthy alternatives or a different non-food choice as a reward for students' academic performance, accomplishments, or classroom behavior. There is a plan to help parents by providing healthy foods list. The guidelines per food item include: No more than 35% of total calories from fat excluding legumes, nuts, nut butters, seeds, eggs, vegetables that have not been deep fried and cheese packaged for individual sale; No more than 10% of total calories from saturated fat; No more than 35% added sugar by weight; 175 Calories (elementary schools) and 250 Calories (middle and high schools). While an individually sold entrée may have no more than 4 grams of fat per 100 calories, 400 calories total.

Diabetes Type 1 and Type 2 Weight Loss Nutrition

If you have diabetes you have to be very careful about what you eat. You need to take extra care in managing your blood glucose levels. You can do this by eating healthy, watching your diet, taking medication prescribed by a physician and getting proper exercise. What foods should you eat? There is a food pyramid for people with diabetes. The Diabetes Food Pyramid divides food into six groups. At the top of the list is fats sweets and alcohol. Since this is the smallest group this tells you to eat very little from this section.

The next group is milk, meat, meat substitutes and other proteins.

On the pyramid 2 to 3 servings of milk is suggested and 4 to 6oz of meat/protein is mentioned. Then you have your vegetables and fruits. Veggies choose at least 3-5 servings per day and fruits choose at least 2-4 servings a day. The last group which you should eat the most of is breads grains and other starches. You can check with your doctor to get a copy of the diabetes food pyramid to learn more about the correct servings and portion sizes for you.

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

This type of diabetes was previously known as juvenile diabetes and is typically diagnosed in children and young adults. The body does not produce insulin. What is insulin? It is a hormone needed to convert starches, sugar (glucose) and other foods into energy. Energy is needed for daily life activities. Type I Diabetes is a chronic condition with no cure, but the outlook for people living with this disease is far better than it was 20 years ago. There has been much advancement in medicine, research and patient education reducing disabling complications and extended the expectancies of life to those without diabetes. In other words people with diabetes 1 can live just as long as people without diabetes with the proper treatment and educating themselves on this disease.

What is Type 2 Diabetes? With type 2 the body does not produce enough insulin or the cell just simply ignores the insulin. Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. You need insulin in order for the body to be able to use sugar. The basic fuel for your cells is sugar. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose does not go into the cells but builds up in the blood instead it can cause problems. The problems it can cause are over time high glucose levels could hurt your heart, kidneys, nerves and eyes. What are the most common symptoms for adults with Type II Diabetes? The answer is fatigue, blurred vision, thirst and excessive urination. Do you think you may be diabetic? Check with your doctor. With type II diabetes minor weight loss can greatly improve your blood glucose levels.

So remember if you have diabetes please be under a doctors care. Watch what you eat. Limit your sweets, fats and alcohol. You can still eat good tasting foods and there are many diabetic food recipes on the internet. Get on a doctor approved exercise program and keep track of your glucose levels. Learn all you can about your condition so you can take control of it instead of the disease controlling you.

Choosing a multivitamin/mineral supplement - which nutrition insurance plan is right for you?

If you're part of the small percentage of people who eat perfectly balanced meals and snacks every single day, stop reading now. If not, your diet probably has nutritional gaps. Although we should eat a diet that includes fruits and veggies, whole grains, and lean protein, there are days that our busy lives just won't allow it. A multivitamin/mineral is like a dietary insurance policy to ensure that even on the days you eat pretzels and a cookie for lunch, your body doesn't miss out on vital nutrients. Multivitamins, like clothing, work best when the size is right. Women, men, and children have very different nutrient needs in terms of specific nutrients and the amounts of important nutrients.

A specialized multivitamin/mineral supplement ensures that nutrient needs are met. Keep in mind, however, that a multivitamin/mineral supplement is meant to do just what its name implies, supplement - not replace - a healthful diet. * Children need less in terms of amounts of vitamins and minerals (since they're smaller), but the importance of proper nutrient levels is no less during childhood. Not only do height and weight increase at incredible rates during this time, but brain function and general coordination are quickly developing, as well. At a time of rapid and vital growth and development, but potentially inconsistent eating habits, a multivitamin/mineral that is specially formulated for children can help a child get all of the nutrients he or she needs - even the picky eaters.

**Adolescents' nutrient needs begin to change as they reach puberty -- right around the same time that busy schedules, peer pressure, and school lunches can wreak havoc on eating habits. Girls' iron needs nearly double (from 8mg/day to 15mg/day) when menstruation begins. This is the time that they should begin taking an adult formula with iron. Calcium requirements increase for boys and girls starting between ages 9- to13- years of age, due to rapid growth and bone development. An additional calcium supplement is often needed, especially for teens that do not eat dairy products. Boys' needs for more B vitamins, as well as larger quantities of most nutrients, make it appropriate for them to begin taking an adult formula at this time as well.

* Women of childbearing age have a particular need for iron, calcium, vitamin D, and folic acid in order to build and maintain strong bones, keep energy levels high, and maintain necessary nutrient stores should they become pregnant. Most multivitamin/minerals will not have 100% of calcium or vitamin D, so an additional supplement containing these nutrients is usually needed. A formula that provides 100% of the daily value of folic acid, a B vitamin, is extremely important in the prevention of certain birth defects, should a woman become pregnant. Sufficient iron is vital to ensuring that oxygen travels throughout the entire body (including the brain!), fighting fatigue, and keeping the metabolism revved up.

* Men have increased nutrient needs due to higher metabolic rates and a larger proportion of total body muscle mass. Overall, needs are higher for B vitamins like thiamin, niacin, and riboflavin and less iron than women do. The B vitamins work together to metabolize food and convert it to fuel for energy production, maintain sufficient levels of sex hormones, and remove toxins from the body. Meeting these increased nutrient needs helps to achieve optimal physical and mental health. Additionally, men can benefit from certain plant compounds, like lycopene, which have been shown to decrease the risk of prostate cancer, the leading cause of cancer death among males.

* Adults over fifty have higher needs for vitamins B6, D, C, and calcium, and lower iron requirements. In addition, our bodies become less efficient at absorbing vitamin B12 from food. Vitamin B12 is a key nutrient in preventing anemia by maintaining a healthy number of red blood cells. It also keeps the nervous system (the control panel for your entire body) working properly. "Senior Formula" multivitamins account for these specific needs and are often enhanced with compounds like lutein and lycopene to support eye and prostate health. However, a regular adult multivitamin/mineral without iron will also meet basic needs. An additional calcium/vitamin D supplement is usually necessary in order to meet the increased needs of older adults.

**Postmenopausal women have increased needs for calcium related to hormonal changes, while iron needs are cut in half due to the ceasing of the menstrual cycle. A general adult multivitamin without iron, or a senior formula plus an additional calcium/vitamin D supplement, is recommended for women who have completed menopause.

Eniva Vibe - Liquid Vitamin - Nutrition Supplement - Anti Aging

Why is Eniva VIBE™ a Superior Nutrition Supplement? ©

Those of us searching for the best quality in nutritional supplements can often be confused by the constant stream of "new" and more "exciting" health drinks and products which all claim to be the next panacea in nutritional healing. But determining a superior product depends on technology and multiple key factors (not single or limited "miracle" ingredients). Those who have experienced first- hand VIBE's life-changing benefits can attest to its unparalleled potency, but those who haven't may often ask "why should I take this supplement over any other supplements that claim to be good? Yet, rarely will they have the resources or the patience to sit down and research the matter out for themselves. Therefore, I took it upon myself to compose a straight-and-to-the-point summary divulging exactly why Eniva's VIBE Nutraceutical is so important for our everyday health.

What is Eniva VIBE™?

The Eniva VIBE is a Liquid ALL-IN-ONE nutraceutical supplement now being recognized as an unprecedented advancement in anti-aging science with the most efficient nutrient delivery system and highest certified antioxidant potency to be found anywhere in the world, rendering most other supplements obsolete.

What makes VIBE™ so different and better than all other nutritional supplements?

#1. Liquid VIBE's nutrients and minerals are delivered to your body in the only one form that our cells were designed to properly recognize and optimally use. This means that they are: * Water-Soluble - in perfect aqueous solution to be transported through the blood stream and into the cell * Ionized - properly charged, to be recognized and received by the cell * Pure - in their elemental state, uncontaminated and of appropriately small molecular size for complete cellular assimilation. If any one of these three essential requirements is not met, the cell cannot make efficient use of the nutrition.

#2. VIBE's unsurpassed Solutomic™ delivery technology is made possible by a highly technical, proprietary process that allows elemental mineral ions to exist in perfect polar and ionic/water-soluble form. The result is nutrients that are certified 99.9% pure, wholly bio-available and virtually completely assimilated into every cell of the body in minutes. In fact, VIBE is directly absorbed like water, bypassing the digestive process. This can be better appreciated when understanding that the level of purity plays a critical role in how nutrients in general are received and accepted on a cellular level. This means that the minerals and vitamins in VIBE are not only put back into the water-soluble state that nature intended, but in a form that is more nutritionally efficient and superior than what can be obtained by whole foods which are exposed to contaminants and pollution, if not pesticides. Significant also, is the fact that Earth Summit Statistics (1992 report) have shown soils to be more than 85% micronutrient depleted, which means that whole foods can no longer supply the proper amount of nutrition required.

#3. VIBE's high-level purity is gained by the use of "OHMTM" water, or ultra- pure USP 23 grade water as the solvent for the uncontaminated crystalline water-soluble nutrients which are rendered to their smallest possible molecular size. The water molecules are then enhanced using Eniva's additional proprietary technology called Negative Field Activation™ to structure and change certain physical qualities of their already ultra-pure water, rendering their OHMTM water even more pure yet, with a lower surface tension (meaning the water becomes more fluid, or "wetter") to optimize a more complete assimilation. The water becomes alkalizing due to the propensity to pull oxygen into the cell. The exceptionally high electrical resistance allows the minerals in solution to be ionized more fully and transported into the body's cells more efficiently. The more pure the water, the more effectively it can hold the proper ionic charge.

#4. The raw materials (minerals, vitamins, botanicals, fruits and vegetables) found in VIBE are processed in Eniva's Class 10,000 (ultra-clean) research and development laboratory and Class 10,000 manufacturing facility to ensure 99.9% purity of each and every component found in every one of its nutritional supplements. This means that VIBE is made in the same conditions and hygiene where heart pace-makers and computer chips are manufactured.

#5. VIBE holds the highest certified Antioxidant rating (ORAC, or, Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) of any liquid nutritional supplement listed in the PDR for Nonprescription Drugs and Dietary Supplements. VIBE is not only a foundational nutritional supplement, but it is the first liquid product able to provide FOUR potent and exclusive anti-aging blends in an ALL-IN- ONE formulation. This distinct synergistic blend includes:

* SoluMAX™ - Immune Health

* AntiOX2™ - Anti-Aging

* HeartMAX™ - Cardiovascular

* CollaMAX™ - Cellular Health

Please visit for more information

#6. VIBE is free of any stimulants, toxicity or contamination, including heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides, caffeine, microbial contamination, plastics, waxes, resins, artificial or hydrogenated ingredients, chalk, binders, fillers, unnatural preservatives, excitotoxins, trans fats, animal products (such as meat or dairy), genetically modified ingredients, and petrochemicals. Furthermore, nothing is pasteurized or irradiated.

#7. The technology incorporated in VIBE also means that its nutrients are within correct ratios and scientific balance. Eniva devotes a tremendous amount of research and development effort to its products. Ironically, the science of correct nutrient ratios and interactions is often overlooked by most nutritional manufacturers. At Eniva, the laws of chemistry and body balance have been respected. No ingredient is sourced, or technical process explored unless it is grounded in qualified, scientific principles. Volumes of research documents, clinical studies, and test results are reviewed by Eniva's R&D Team as new technologies are explored. VIBE truly incorporates the best of both science and nature.

The end result of the technology used in VIBE is an ALL-IN-ONE liquid supplement unmatched in bioavailability, purity, and antioxidant value with a breakthrough assimilation technology that allows angstrom-sized, elemental nutrients to achieve cellular efficiency within seconds! Now you know why so many doctors and nutritionists are recommending VIBE to their patients. Eniva Corporation offers VIBE as the benchmark by which other nutritional liquid supplements are measured. Truly not another excuse to have a company with a tasty fruit-juice attached to it. This is real nutrition, with real science, yielding real results!

It doesn't matter if it's Noni, Goji, Xango, a plant derived from land or sea, or some other exotic berry sitting under the moon on a seashore. No single food or nutrient is capable of supplying a daily complete regimen of all the essential vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants that the body requires to function optimally. Your body needs the full-spectrum nutrition found in VIBE. It's no wonder everything else is just "juice".

As you experience the health generating results of VIBE and the Eniva Product Line, it is natural to share your experience with friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. Many times the results are so dramatic that others just notice the beneficial changes, or your excitement motivates others to want to regain and improve their health. Eniva created a marketing plan specifically designed to enable people to just use the products and receive wholesale pricing.

As others that you have influenced start using the VIBE and other Eniva products, your process is duplicated, and many find that a business begins to build naturally. With a generous compensation plan, Eniva has made it realistically possible with minimal effort to have your products paid for, and even earn significant additional income. Whatever the outcome financially, your true wealth is your health. With it, everything else matters. Without it, nothing else matters. So pursue health and wellness with enthusiasm and diligence, share the message and the experience, and take wellness to this world! Have a healthful and vibrant day!

Crohn's Nutrition

There is no food that causes Crohn's Disease. Diet has nothing to do with causing it either. Sometimes newly diagnosed Crohn's patients think that their poor diet or foods that they have been eating caused them to get Crohn's Disease but that just isn't the case at all. However, once a person has been diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, diet becomes a very important factor in their care and must be regulated with great care.

If you're a beginner and you don't posses nutritional knowledge, then mastering nutrition is far more important than training and should become your number one priority. I say this because improving a poor diet can create rapid, quantum leaps in fat loss and muscle building progress.

The doctor will supply a very long list of foods that the patient should avoid. In general, these food no-no's will cover:

1. Saturated Fats in all forms

2. Leafy Vegetables

3. Nuts and Seeds

4. Cow's Milk and Milk Products

5. Most fresh fruits

6. Alcoholic drinks

7. Caffeine and food that contains caffeine

8. Food that contains Gluten

9. Oxalate Rich Foods

10. Unrefined Sugar One of the main problems associated with Crohn's is that the body is not extracting the necessary nutrients from food. Supplemental vitamins and minerals will most likely be recommended.

When a Crohn's patient is having a symptoms flare-up, it is important that he stay on a soft diet to help alleviate pain. Between flare-ups one food at a time may be introduced into the diet to see if it can be tolerated. During a flare-up, a Crohn's patient still must eat. Here are a few recommendation: * Soft foods - mashed potatoes made with soy or rice milk, Jell-O, boiled chicken, and fruit smoothies * Liquid nutritional supplements - Ensure ® is a good example, but there are many other options * Rice foods - rice breads or rice cereal are a healthy way to nourish your body.

Consuming fluids is another important factor for Crohn's patients. Dehydration is a serious concern because of the diarrhea associated with the disease. Replacing fluids as well as electrolytes can be done by using one of the many sports drinks available on the market and they will supply additional calories as well.

Other factors are also to blame, including an increased time watching TV and playing video games, decreased time in physical activity and unhealthy food choices.

High Glycemic Carbohydrates - Once a child reaches their toddler years, ages 1 to 3, feeding can become a challenge. Developmental changes are occurring at this age.
