Lack Of Basic Nutrition Creates Generation Of Criminals, Prison System Society

A new study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry shows that children who experience malnutrition exhibit strikingly increased behavioral disorders and aggressive behavior as they grow older. The study looked at children between the ages of eight and 17 years, and found some rather shocking statistics about their behaviors.

Four primary nutrients were tried in the study: Zinc, iron, B vitamins and protein.

Children who suffered certain nutritional deficiencies demonstrated a shocking 41% increase in aggression at age eight. At age 17, they demonstrated a 51% increase in violent and antisocial behaviors. And the only difference is their diet. It's all about the foods they were eating and the nutrients they were missing.

What specific nutrients were missing from their diets?

Malnourished children weren't getting crucial minerals like zinc and iron, and they weren't getting the B vitamins they needed to develop healthy nervous systems. And a healthy nervous system is a prerequisite for mental and emotional health and stability.

Now let's talk about these nutrients in a little more detail and explore why these nutritional deficiencies are so widespread. Zinc is perhaps the single most common nutritional deficiency in the American population. Estimates are that more than 80% of the population is deficient in zinc. As a result of that deficiency, people's immune systems are impaired, they're not able to resist infectious diseases such as influenza, they're not able to heal their wounds as quickly and they're not able to recover from surgical procedures as quickly as they could if they had zinc. It also affects fetal development in pregnant women and impairs neurological function.

And yet zinc is cheap! It only costs a few pennies a day to supplement our diets with zinc. In fact, it's one of the least expensive supplements you can get. But in our country we still have widespread chronic deficiencies. And as we're seeing in studies like this, our zinc deficiency is leading to – let's say it bluntly – criminals.

Why do we have so many criminals in this country? Because so many of them are raised with nutritional imbalances which then distort their mental function, their mood, their response to stress and their ability to be successful in modern society. At least those are major contributing factors. At the same time we have B-vitamin deficiencies, which is interesting because so many of the popular food products sold in grocery stores all over the country and around the world actually deplete the body of B vitamins. The two most common ingredients in our foods seem to be white flour and sugar.

It's hard to find any product in the grocery store, it seems, that isn't made with flour or some form of added sugars, whether it's sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, dextrose or just plain sugar. These two ingredients are both highly refined ingredients, and they tend to strip away nutrients from the bodies of people who consume them. For example, when a person eats a donut, that donut contains both white flour and added sugars, which deplete the body of B vitamins, causing deficiencies. And it is these deficiencies that lead to antisocial behavior, aggressive behavior and ultimately criminal behavior - especially among males.

Another dietary factor in these behavioral disorders, it turns out, is a lack of quality protein. People aren't getting high quality protein because they think the only place to get protein is from beef and red meat, when in fact superfoods like spirulina offer much higher quality protein. Soy and rice proteins are also much higher quality proteins. In fact, there are many plant proteins that are actually healthier proteins for human beings, but are not being adequately consumed by the American population. People tend to turn to meat and milk, and those are in my opinion the worst sources of protein if you wish to maintain long-term health.

So we have a population that suffers from widespread nutritional deficiencies – that much we know. But what may surprise you is how we actually deal with these deficiencies. Instead of spending a few dollars a month on nutritional supplements that would prevent these chronic diseases and aggressive behaviors, we end up spending hundreds of billions of dollars a year on building new prisons and treating these people with expensive prescriptions and mind-altering drugs. When it comes to children, for example, instead of giving them the food they need to be healthy, which would prevent these diseases and disorders, we dose them on Ritalin, antidepressants and other mind-altering drugs. This is expensive. It also impairs the child's learning capability while at the same time increasing the child's risk of violent behavior and suicide.

Here we have a nutrient deficiency, most notably the B vitamins, that is causing children to act aggressively and be diagnosed with ADHD. The solution offered by conventional medicine is to dose them with antidepressant drugs that actually promote more aggressive behavior as we've seen in recent school killings. What kind of solution is that? It sounds crazy, but it's exactly the solution being implemented every day, right now, all across the country. Perhaps even with your child. But these kids don't need drugs; they need vitamins, nutrition and healthy foods.

But even if you went to the grocery store for fruits and vegetables and ate them three times a day, you still wouldn't be getting adequate nutrition. To figure this out for yourself, just do the math. Add up the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) numbers on the labels of all the foods you consume, and you'll find out that if you're going to meet the minimum requirements set by the U.S. government for preventing chronic disease, you're going to have to eat, on average, 10,000 calories a day of grocery store foods. That's 500% more food than an individual needs if they're a healthy adult of average weight. It's impossible to eat that much, even if you try hard. Morgan Spurlock, the creator of the "Supersize Me" documentary, ate nothing but McDonald's food for 30 days.

He stuffed himself with McDonald's food three times a day and still only managed to eat about 5,000 calories. You would have to double Spurlock's incredible feat to eat 10,000 calories a day. And only then would you be meeting the minimum requirements for nutrition. And yet, those minimum requirements aren't enough to experience optimum health; all they do is prevent the most obvious nutritional deficiency diseases such as beriberi, scurvy or even rickets. If you want to get optimum health, you've got to supplement your diet through nutritional supplements, or by consuming superfoods like chlorella or spirulina, sprouts, berries and products like The Ultimate Meal or Berry Green. This is the only way you can get adequate nutrition.

As we're now realizing with this study, a huge segment of our childhood population clearly is not getting this nutrition. As a result, we are raising yet another generation of children with behavioral disorders, aggression and problems with the law. Essentially, we are raising tomorrow's criminals. These are the people that will be put in federal prisons that you and I will have to pay for with our taxpayer dollars. We're going to have to support them, and it costs a lot of money to support prisoners. Not only do they not produce anything, they don't pay taxes or contribute to the revenue needed to support society. They actually suck away revenues from society by costing something like $60,000 per year per prisoner on average. They simply waste away without learning new skills that could help them assimilate back into society someday.

Now think about it. We could spend a few dollars a month on our children, and give them nutritional supplements that prevent all of this. The choice is this: spend a few dollars a month on supplementing our kids' nutrition, or let this become a full-blown problem where we have to build more prisons and spend tens of thousands of dollars every year to support them in our federal prison system. Which choice makes more sense? If you were running the country and had to decide where to spend the money, where would it make more sense? Should you spend a couple of dollars a month on nutritional supplements for children and pregnant women, or should you spend $60,000 a year on each and every criminal that is created by nutritional deficiencies?

So what's the solution here? It's easy. Nutritional supplements should be made available free of charge to the entire population. The government (the taxpayers, actually) should provide free vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients to the population, especially pregnant women and children, so that we can prevent birth defects and behavioral disorders early on. We would save countless dollars down the road. This is something I've supported for a long time and I will continue to promote.

But of course, nothing is free. American taxpayers would be footing the bill, but it is a wise investment. By spending a few dollars on disease prevention today, we are avoiding the long-term expenditure of a lot more money taking care of a society full of criminals. Nutrition is a great investment, and preventing disease has a big payoff for society. I say we pay close attention to these studies and find ways to provide better nutrition to our children, our expectant mothers and our general population so that we can prevent these diseases before they become problems for society.

Holistic Nutrition

Nutrition is the process of assimilating food for the growth and repair of worn tissue. It is also the science and study of proper balance within the diet to promote health. The dictionary defines Holism as the “theory that the fundamental principle of the universe is the creation of wholes i.e. complete and self-contained systems from the atom and the cell by evolution to the most complex forms of life and mind.” It also defines Holistic Medicine as “a system which treats the whole person, physically and psychologically, rather than simply treating the whole part.” Thus, holistic nutrition looks at the total person, their dietary intake including supplements and lifestyle, and on prevention and the use of non-toxic, natural therapies. The goal is to ‘do no harm.’ Then with the use of natures healing power address the needs of the whole person. Nutrition is fundamental to the practice of Holistic Medicine. Correct diet is the foundation for other therapies and generally makes them unnecessary.

Western society has overcome the problem of infectious disease due to public health measures. Although, we have eliminated infectious disease, hospitals and mental health clinics are swamped and society is fragmented and ill-at-ease. We have replaced infectious disease with degenerative diseases.

By definition, evolution ensures that all living things which exist today are well adapted to their environment provided that they live according to the forces which shaped their evolutionary development—this definition does not translate to nutrition. According to the Macrobiotic philosophy it was by eating whole cereal grains as the principle food that man[kind] developed his superior intellect. Use of fire for cooking allowed man to change his food which in turn allowed man to become more flexible and adaptable and therefore the most successful species.

Thus, Macrobiotic nutrition establishes Principles of Natural Health Care:

· Good health is a natural state

· The body works to maintain balance and heal itself

· Acute illness is a manifestation that the body is struggling to heal itself

· Chronic illness is a sign that healing has failed

The Seven Essential Components for Macrobiotic nutrition are found in these food categories:

Carbohydrates - whole grains, beans, vegetables, seeds, fruits;
Proteins - beans, bean products, fish, seeds, nuts, meat, eggs, dairy;
Fats and oils - cooking oils, nut butters, nuts, seeds, butter;
Minerals - salts, sea vegetables, vegetables, fish, meat;
Vitamins - vegetables, fruits, sea vegetables;
Enzymes - fermented foods, raw vegetables and fruits;
Water - spring water, vegetables, fruits;

Using the description of disease development, we can readily understand the need for change. For convenience the description is described as three distinct phases but in practice the stages meld into each other with no clear division.

Development of Disease - Stage 1

By definition there is an imbalance between intake of, and requirement for nutrients. In theory this could be a deficiency but in our modern society it is more likely to be an excess. There may be a loss of appetite or the person becomes a fussy eater; most people over-ride this by eating ever-more tasty processed foods.

The excess may be stored as fat (nature's way of providing for lean times which no longer exists).

Avoid the mistake of thinking that if a person is lean they are not overeating. Instead of storing excess, the body may work to maintain a balance by eliminating the excess (Principle 2 above)

This creates one or more of the following symptoms:

· Increased physical activity, boisterousness (diagnosed as ADHD — pharmaceuticals are prescribed)
· Persistent hair loss (diagnosed as genetic baldness)
· Dry, scaly skin
· Itchy skin
· Occasional vomiting—(diagnosed as 24-hour flu or an exotic name du jour)
· Occasional diarrhea
· Discharges from orifices – eyes, genital system
· Tooth tartar
· Unpleasant body odors
· Strong-smelling urine, urinary crystals
· Bad breath

These are warning signs of improper elimination rather than true illness. They show that the body is making adjustments to maintain its healthy status. If only one of these symptoms is present this is a warning that changes to the lifestyle - especially diet - are needed.

Development of Disease - Stage 2 If imbalance between intake and requirement persists, the build-up of wastes will eventually lead to impairment of the major organ systems. If the organs of elimination are affected this will accelerate the process of deterioration.

In time, (days/months depending on the individual) signs of true illness will appear. At first these tend to be physiological in nature rather than as a result of degenerative changes in the organ systems:

· Signs of inflammation e.g. Pancreatitis, hepatitis, joint swelling,
· Abnormality of the immune system – allergy/intolerance, susceptibility to infection
· Hormonal imbalance – false pregnancy, abnormal oestrus, thyroid problems
· Rheumatism/arthritis

Development of Disease - Stage 3

As the build-up of waste products continues, the major organs will begin to fail. Signs of organ failure may not appear until 75% of the organ function is lost. At this stage the person is in danger—e.g. Kidney or Liver failure; Diabetes; Malignant tumors.

This description provides a framework for the categorization of all the disease conditions we experience. Using this we can form a holistic view of what is happening in the body and offer a prescription for action.

For example:

1. Idiopathic epilepsy (idiopathic—cause unknown). Holistically this is a discharge of excess energy (Development of disease Stage 1). Therefore management would require a low protein, low fat, and chemical free, high in complex carbohydrate (unrefined grain). The amount of food needs to be kept low to meet but not exceed needs.

2. Pan-osteitis (bone inflammation) I include this, not because it is common but because it is comparatively unusual. What causes it? Without the benefit of holistic thinking we wouldn't know where to begin. But we can see that as generalized inflammation it fits neatly into the category of Stage 2 of the Development of Disease; control and prevention become obvious.

People who practice a Macrobiotic food plan experience:

-physical appearance, vitality and energy comparatively 15-20 years younger;

-no prescriptions or seldom use over-the-counter medications;

-seldom experience headaches—if they do, it can be linked to a specific issue, which is corrected naturally;

-less of the so-called ‘aging’ symptoms;

-their weight is low to moderate on the scale for height and body build;

-seldom experience colds, flu or allergies.

It is your decision to create your health—choose well.

Staying Healthy Naturally with a Herbal Nutrition Supplement

Even though conventional multivitamins and other dietary supplements are affordable and abound in drugstores and other retail, the herbal nutrition supplement is very popular among many consumers not only in the East -- the stronghold of herbal medicine -- but all over the world. One of the reasons for this would probably be because of the recognition that herbs have been used for healing and wellness purposes throughout time, and that the medical community is open to exploring the viability of various methods of natural medicine in preventing and treating diseases.

It was the abandonment of this traditional way of eating in favor of our modern (Western) diet which has led to most of the illnesses prevalent in modern society. Macrobiotic nutrition has proven that if we return to a diet based on whole cereal grains, vegetables and fruit with animal products, rather than our present reliance on animal products, refined/chemically engineered foods, and sugar, we can regain our physical and mental health.

It has been said that even if you eat healthy foods and take basic vitamin supplements, it would not do you if a lot of good if your body is unable to absorb and digest the nutrients you're taking in. A herbal nutrition supplement would aid in nutritional absorption because it nourishes the cells, promotes cellular communication, and enable them to function more effectively. It would also promote cell growth and repair. Botanical products such as herbs are very important nowadays because they help detoxify and cleanse our bodies, which are exposed to countless numbers of pollutants and other toxic substances in what we eat, drink, and breathe.

Some herbal nutrition supplements are being marketed for their anti-aging effects, and with the increasing number of baby boomers, such supplements are in high demand. This is not to say that they would keep a person eternally young; rather, they mitigate some of the most common effects of aging. For instance, studies have shown that bilberry extract can prevent eye problems such as glaucoma and cataracts; guggulipid extract can help relieve arthritis symptoms; hawthorne berry extract is beneficial for both hypertension and hypotension; and turmeric extract can help with symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis.

Some herbal nutrition supplements are reputed to provide relief from minor ailments, aches, and pains, and to promote a generally good state of health. For example, ginger extract is said to help people who suffer from migraines, hay fever and nausea; green tea extract may assist in treating diarrhea, headaches, and stomach problems. In addition, it can help prevent tooth cavities from forming. A herbal nutrition supplement extracted from the mahonia grape is helpful in treating pimples, influenza, and urinary tract infections, while one called gingko biloba is popular among many students because it promotes alertness and concentration, and increases short-term memory.

Dietary supplements are classified as foods by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), not as drugs. Hence, they are not subject to the same regulatory scrutiny that drugs get. It's only when there are complaints of adverse consequences from taking a supplement that an investigation will be launched. Consumers should be careful about taking herbal supplements indiscriminately; just because they can be purchased without a doctor's prescription does not mean that they are suitable for all. Take for instance those weight loss supplements that were popular some years ago. They contained ephedrine, an extract from the herb ma huang. Those supplements caused a host of complications for many users, including seizures, myocardial infarction, and death, until it was finally taken off the market.

Many herb extracts are included in weight loss formulations. Ingredients like ginseng, chickweed, and kelp are said to facilitate the shedding of excess pounds. But keep in mind that there is no solid scientific proof that these ingredients do that. In fact, some of them can be extremely harmful if taken in large doses. Their effectiveness in helping a person lose weight is not being discounted; it's just that more research and studies are needed to validate their alleged capacity to do so. Another thing to remember is that if you are already taking some sort of prescription drug, it is possible that you might experience adverse effects of drug interactions if you take a supplement in conjunction with it.

Herbal nutrition supplements are available in a variety of forms: you can buy as pills, capsules, gel, powders, or liquids. You can buy them online or offline and because of the proliferation of offerings, buying several kinds will not burn a hole in your pocket. Just be sure to be a wise consumer; it's your health that's on the line here. Try to find time to talk your options over with a physician or nutritionist so that you can be sure that you will be buying the right herbal nutrition supplement for you or members of your family.

Maximizing One's Health with Nutritional Supplements

In this day and age, most of us find ourselves failing to take in the recommended daily amount of nutrients that we should be getting. Nutritional supplements help to fill this gap by providing the vitamins, minerals, and other substances that we may be missing out on. In addition, personal food preferences, lifestyle habits, or special health needs may prompt a person to take nutritional supplements in order to remain in the pink of health.

It's a common practice among cultures of different countries to give multivitamins or other supplements to their children (many grown-ups nowadays still wrinkle their noses at the memory of cod liver oil). Giving vitamins and minerals to children is a good idea more than ever today, simply because of the types of food many of them eat -- fast food, junk food, food that is full of empty calories and which do not provide them with the nutrition they need to develop properly. In addition to the basic vitamins and minerals, many children's supplements today include ingredients that would enhance growth, such as chlorella growth factor (for height) and taurine (for proper physical development).

Adults who partake of similarly nutritionally-deficient food also need to take a dietary supplement. Eating convenience foods like take-out or microwave dinners is fine once in a while if you're pressed for time, but not always. A person should remember that being nutritionally deficient will make him or her more prone to a variety of diseases.

Sometimes our food or drink choices influence the degree to which we need nutritional supplements. For instance, vegetarians forego a significant source of protein and iron -- meat -- and they do not get the necessary amounts of these nutrients in vegetables; so protein and iron supplements are suitable for them. Those who avoid dairy products, on the other hand, whether because of lactose intolerance or a general dislike for this type of food in general, should make sure to take a calcium supplement to correct any calcium deficiencies. Smokers and alcoholic beverage drinkers need a greater supply of vitamins B and C since they find it harder to absorb these nutrients. Those on a weight loss diet should use supplements to ensure that their nutritional needs are being met even as they eliminate or reduce the amount of certain foods in their diet. And women who are pregnant are advised to take supplements that contain ingredients beneficial to them and their babies, such as folic acid, vitamin D, iron, phosphorus, and calcium; women's needs for them increase as much as twofold during pregnancy.

Nutritional supplements are also recommended for those who are at risk for a certain disease or health problem. For instance, people who are in their thirties and forties are advised to take calcium supplements to head off osteoporosis. Regular intake of vitamin C and B would help prevent scurvy and beriberi, respectively. Studies have also shown that vitamin C can aid in the prevention of eye disorders, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin D, on the other hand, has been shown to have preventive effects against some cancers, including colon, prostate, and breast cancer, while some studies suggest that vitamin E is helpful in preventing colds and other upper respiratory tract infections.

Did you know that dietary supplements can also help a person psychologically and emotionally? At the American Psychiatric Association's 2003 meeting, papers were presented on the effects of vitamin and mineral supplements on the mental state of young adults. For instance, study subjects in a prison population started exhibiting less anti-social behavior after going on a supplement regime. Another experiment showed that female college students had faster reaction times and less mood swings after taking a larger amount of thiamin or vitamin B1. Further, young adults who took selenium found themselves less depressed, anxious, and tired. Finally, a group of young female adults who were given the recommended amounts of nine vitamins exhibited improved cognitive functions after one year.

Nutritional supplements are an essential part of today's diet for the vast majority of us. But remember that not all supplements are created equal. Offerings by other companies are pharmaceutical-grade; meaning that they have more active ingredients and that they underwent more rigorous quality control. Also keep in mind that taking although vitamins and minerals are more often than not safe and good for one's health, taking too much of them could produce toxic effects and result in complications.

Vitamins and Minerals - Are Your Getting the Most from Your Nutritional Supplements?

Whether you eat a healthy diet or supplement your diet with nutritional supplements such as vitamins and minerals, you might not be receiving the nutrients you think you are getting. Why, because of a condition called malabsorption. But what exactly is malabsorption? Very simply, it is the inability of the intestine to absorb one or more nutrients from your diet. These nutrients includes fat, carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Malabsorption is not a disease in and of itself, but a symptom of an underlying defect in some part of the digestive system.

Malabsorption can be caused by many things such as disease of stomach, pancreas, liver, and intestine. However, the most common causes are congestion of the gallbladder and clogging of surface used for absorption in the intestine due to compaction of fecal waste. While these conditions can occur in at any age, they are most commonly seen in older adults and seniors. But what exactly are the causes of gallbladder congestion and compaction of the intestine? They are almost always caused by lack of maintenance of the colon and gallbladder. Yes, you can maintain your colon and gallbladder. How? By doing a colon cleanse and gallbladder flush. These natural remedies are alternative medicine to harsh laxative and gallbladder surgery and can spare you from colon cancer and a host of other chronic diseases.

Part of the process of digestion, is the mixing of your food with bile, which helps the body digest fats. Bile is stored in the gallbladder and is made from cholesterol, bile salts and bilirubin. If the bile contains too much of any of these substance, under certain conditions it will get harden into stones. Because gallstones are just harden bile, they accumulate in the gallbladder.

Nutritional supplements are available in tablet, capsule, powder, and liquid tincture form. Powders and liquids are particularly suitable for children, the elderly, and convalescents, as the body easily absorbs them. It's better to take supplements at room temperature with cool water. Avoid drinking tea or coffee within 15 minutes of taking a nutritional supplement as it can interfere with nutrient absorption by the body. Dosages must be observed when taking supplements. The dosages for children are always much lower than those for adults, and men may require slightly larger doses than women. If in doubt, seek advice from a nutritional therapist.

Over time, the quantity of these stones increases and takes up most, if not all the space in the gallbladder. When this happens, your gallbladder becomes so congested that there is no place to store new bile made by the liver. Since your body needs bile to help you digest fat and absorb nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, gallbladder congestion results in malabsorption.

The final stage of digestion is the absorption of nutrients through the wall of the intestine and colon. Unfortunately, for many people, the colon and small intestine does not work efficiently, mainly due to poor diet and lack of maintenance. Over the years, the walls of the colon and small intestine can become encrusted with compacted waste. This clogs most of the surface area of the intestine that is used for the absorption of nutrients. The result, depending of the degree of encrustation, is your body's inability to absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from your diet.

Because both gallbladder congestion and intestinal compaction are accumulative, they are, therefore, both progressive with age. Consequently most adults will have some kind problems absorbing nutrients - whether from foods or nutritional supplements. These conditions progressively get worse with age until the ability to absorb nutrients such as vitamins and minerals is almost completely lost. This is why older people tend to be much thinner, since they can hardly absorb fats or any other nutrients for that matter from their diet.

Malabsorption generally affects people in their fifties and older. This can be a serious problem for people with osteoporosis and bone density disease. These individuals usually take some form of calcium supplement or medication to help control this health condition. But minerals, such as calcium, need other nutrients such as vitamin D to be properly absorbed in the body. Therefore, these individuals are unable to get the calcium they need, not only because they can't absorb calcium, but because they cannot absorb the support nutrients needed for its proper assimilation in their bodies.

What does this means to you? Well depending on your degree of malabsorption, if you take nutritional supplements like vitamin and minerals, you could be pouring money down the drain, or should I say, down the toilet. Individuals who have done gallbladder flush or colon cleansing, have reported starting to really experience the benefits they expected from their vitamins and minerals supplements.

So next time you take a nutritional supplement, consider the possibility that you may not be getting your money's worth. If you feel like you are not, you have two choices. You can either take more than the recommended dose in the hope of getting close to what your body really need. Or you can boost you body ability to absorb nutrients by getting yourself a colon cleanse as well as a gallbladder flush.

Nutritional Supplements: There's One For Every Cell!

The human body is one of the most exquisitely crafted machines, with a complex array of inter- and intra-connected systems functioning continuously, and in harmony. Nourishing and replenishing the body with the proper fuel in the right quantity and at the right time greatly influences the performance and health of the body system.

The fuel for our body is food and this food must contain three major ingredients - proteins, carbohydrates, and fats - along with vitamins, minerals, and water to achieve proper nutrition. These substances are used for building tissues as they wear out and die, to keep the body in good working condition, and to supply the energy needs of the body.

For good nutrition a person should eat a well-balanced diet, that is, one that provides an adequate amount of each of the classes of nutrients, furnishing at the same time an adequate but not excessive amount of calories for the body's energy needs. The food that we consume may sometimes prove to be insufficient for the body's needs and can result in fatigue, stress, and serious health problems. Combating this insufficiency is easy now, as the nutritional supplements industry has become so evolved that it has products that cater virtually to the needs and requirements of every type of cell in the body.

Just look at the broad spectrum of supplements ranging from Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, C, D, E, K, Biotin, Folic acid, and glyconutrients (the large sugar polymers containing monosaccharides which are important nutritional ingredients used by the body to assemble glycoproteins, the molecules that function as a sort of cellular braille for cell-to-cell communication. Each glycoprotein is known to contain at least one of eight essential sugars: galactose, glucose, mannose, N-acetylneuraminic acid, fucose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, and xylose.).

Let's look at some nutritional supplements and their therapeutic uses: Bioflavonoids help in assisting the uptake and use of vitamin C in the body and help to maintain the strength of blood vessels. Some are also potent antioxidants. These are useful for people with varicose veins, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, haemorrhoids, bruises, menstrual problems, cold sores or anemia, or for those who wish to maintain healthy blood vessels.

Digestive enzymes are also available as supplements. These are necessary for smokers, those with a high intake of alcohol, the elderly, and the chronically sick, whose bodies produce fewer enzymes. Glucosamine and chrondroitin provide the essential elements your body needs to maintain healthy joints and connective tissue. Pycnogenolis, an herbal extract, contains proanthocyanidin. This has a similar structure to bioflavonoids and is a powerful antioxidant. It's an immune-system booster and helps to strengthen blood vessel walls and capillaries. It also has an especially beneficial effect on lung tissue.

The developments in the research for new nutritional supplements may get a boost with the advent of nanotechnology. The next big leap in nutritional supplements may change the entire food habit to a leaner, focused 'cell energy management system.'
