Explain the benefits in terms that they can relate to and understand.

Food Diaries: Are Nutrition Journal's Friend or Foe in the Fight Against Child Obesity?


Most diets recommend keeping nutrition journals, or food diaries, on a regular basis. These journals are supposed to do several things:

First, by keeping track of everything a person eats, you can figure out exactly how many calories and how much fat is consumed.

Second, it makes people accountable for all of those little snacks that they might not think about otherwise (like that one piece of chocolate that you grabbed on the way from the kitchen into the living room).


Third, nutrition journals help people see patterns in their eating habits. Habits are a lot easier to change when you know what they are.

All of this sounds great, so...


what's the problem?

Well, that was what nutrition journals are supposed to do. Reality can be somewhat different.


The Drawbacks of Nutrition Journals

1. They are labor-intensive. Keeping a diary takes a lot of time and effort. It is difficult for most people to change their routine so drastically that it will last more than a few days. Change can be a good thing. But, in order for it to stick, changes need to occur slowly. Trying to make too many changes too quickly is a frequent cause of failure.When I talk with families in my practice, I stress the importance of not changing your lifestyle drastically. Make a small positive change and let it become a habit before adding on something else.The bottom line... if it's too much work, people won't keep it up.


This, of course, leads to inaccuracy, and the journal loses its value.


3. It needs to be reviewed. Unless the journal is being reviewed regularly by someone who understands nutrition well, you may not know what changes, if any, to make. Sometimes people can analyze their own nutrition journal and see what the problems are. Most folks, though, are not as fortunate, and just continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. Should you use a nutrition journal? You can, but you don't have to.


If you choose to keep a food diary for your child, keep the following points in mind to increase your chances of success. Don't try to record everything your child eats every day. Only do one or two days at first, then bring the list to your doctor to comment on. Don't scatter your focus. Use the diary to help you with one particular area. In other words, don't try to keep track of calories, fat, protein, sugar, cholesterol, etc. at the same time. Pick one thing to look at and improve upon.


Don't worry if you miss something or forget a day. A journal is just a tool for you to help your child eat better.

2. People cheat. I know... I'm not exactly showing my usual optimism here, but it's true. Just because people are supposed to write down every single item doesn't mean that they will. It's human nature to want to make things seem better than they may be. It isn't because people are consciously manipulating the system. It's just that their brains "conveniently" leave certain items off the list.


Here are some tips to help you sort through all of the information out there and make progress toward helping your family live happier and healthier lives:

Sounds too simple, but it's so important. Make sure that you have a good sense as to what are appropriate and realistic goals for your children before you start to collect information.

Supplements and the The Nutrition Pyramid

The key to effective supplementation is in understanding how the body works and what supplements are most effective for you. The best way to understand proper supplement to use is to conceive of a nutrition pyramid. If we were to have such a pyramid, it would explain why some supplements seem to work for some people while they do not work for others.


At the base of the food supplement pyramid, we have multi-vitamins, multi-minerals, and essential fatty acids. Any person who takes a supplement without first ensuring that their diet is full of these essentials will receive little benefit from their nutrition plan. These are the absolute building blocks of your body. You have minimal sources of these three groups in your diet and they are absolutely essential to an energetic, healthy lifestyle.



Vitamins are essential to every biochemical reaction in your body. They are the building blocks of your skin, bone, and cartilage.



Minerals are the matrix that make your skeletal system strong. They are also the key ingredients in many vascular components, and are essential to proper metabolic function.


Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids are the key source of many basic, metabolic processes. They are also widely known to reduce inflammation, or, rather, their absence is known to be a source of inflammation and pain in joints. Without these essentials, it is impossible to heal a disease with more specific supplementation when the underlying functions behind human life are not properly supported. Supplements for energy and stress can be appropriate at any age, It is well known that the body consumes higher levels of the B vitamins, of calcium, magnesium and iron, and of vitamin C when it is under duress. Next on the nutrition pyramid, symptom specific supplements are a very tricky field to discuss. Often, these supplements will help some users and not others. Often, they will help for a while and become ineffective. The trick to these supplements is to follow the rules of the pyramid. You must first ensure that you have had at least a month of excellent multi-vitamin and mineral supplementation.


You must also ensure that you first rule out and stress, or age combating supplements as being a superior supplementation process to the 'symptom-specific' supplement. Finally, you must rule out any physical source to your pain. It is helpful to take glucosamine or chondroitin sulphate, for example, for knee pain or arthritis. But if the musculature surrounding the knee is stiff and tight, unbeknownst to you, this is likely the cause of the degeneration of cartilage in your joints.

The importance of good health nutrition is nothing new.Today, good health nutrition is more important than ever. At least four of the 10 leading causes of death in the U.S.--heart disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes--are directly related to way we eat; diet is also implicated in scores of other conditions. But while the wrong diet can be deadly, eating right is among the cornerstones of health.Of course, food alone isn't the key to a longer and healthier life. Good nutrition should be part of an overall healthy lifestyle, which also includes regular exercise, not smoking or drinking alcohol excessively, stress management and limiting exposure to environmental hazards.


The keys to good nutrition are balance, variety and moderation. To stay healthy, your body needs the right balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein --the three main components of nutrition.You also need vitamins, minerals and other substances from many different foods, and while some foods are better than others, no single food or food group has it all--so eating a variety of different foods is essential.

Nutrition And Health Problems:
Osteoporosis is a thinning of the bones -- the ultimate result of a slow, progressive loss of bone mineral that affects us all, beginning at around age 35. Although this process is most pronounced in postmenopausal women, osteoporosis can also affect men as they age. For people in their 80s, bone density may be reduced by 30 percent to 50 percent. About 24 million Americans have serious thinning of their bones, and osteoporosis is associated with 1.2 million bone fractures every year. An important cause of osteoporosis is a lack of calcium early in life. Adults need 1,200 to 1,500 milligrams per day.


But don't use too much olive oil; no more than 2 tablespoons a day. Otherwise the consumption of unsaturated fats will cause you to gain weight. - Watch your carbohydrate intake. You should eat only one kind of carbohydrate per meal, such as bread, rice or pasta. - Avoid refined sugar and white bread. Eat brown sugar instead of white and whole grain bread instead of white bread. Refined sugar and carbohydrates dissolve quickly in the blood producing an excess of insulin that could overwork the pancreas.


To get this much calcium from food isn't easy: You'd need to drink four to five 8-ounce glasses of low-fat milk each day, or eat several full servings of yogurt, cheese or broccoli (all foods high in calcium). The average person only takes in about 750 milligrams of calcium daily from food. For this reason, many doctors now advise taking a 600- to 800-milligram supplement of calcium every day, along with adequate vitamin D intake. The usual recommendation is 400 to 800 units of vitamin


D per day. A standard multiple vitamin contain 400 units of vitamin D. Also many calcium supplements now contain vitamin D. Calcium absorption and excretion can be affected by what you eat. High-caffeine foods, such as coffee, tea and caffeinated sodas, may deplete the body's stores of calcium, and thus may promote bone loss. Diets high in protein and sodium also increase calcium excretion.

Health Nutrition Supplements:
In general, children and adults might benefit from taking one multiple vitamin per day. For a few pennies per day, a multivitamin provides added insurance that people are getting adequate intake of necessary vitamins and micronutrients. To avoid indigestion, take the multivitamin with food.


Women may need extra calcium and iron. You can get calcium from low fat dairy products and from over-the-counter calcium in the form of calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. These are inexpensive and easy to take. Calcium supplements are best absorbed when taken with meals, at a dose of 500 mg one or two times per day. Women who bleed excessively during menstruation may need to take a multivitamin and mineral supplement that contains iron to meet the daily recommendation of 15 mg. Pregnant and lactating women are usually given supplements by their doctors to meet their increased needs for iron and other nutrient.


Teenagers often have irregular eating habits and may not eat a balanced diet. A multivitamin with minerals can help fill in the nutritional gaps. Some teenage girls also need a daily calcium supplement.


Vegetarians are advised to take a multivitamin with iron and other minerals each day. Iron and B12 deficiency occur frequently in strict vegetarians.


Dieters and people who avoid entire food groups are more likely to have vitamin and mineral deficiencies. A daily generic multivitamin with minerals should be considered. People with deficiency diseases or absorption disorders may need therapeutic doses of nutrients (two to 10 times the Recommended Dietary Intake) prescribed by a doctor. People taking prescription medications that interfere with the absorption of nutrients may also need higher dose supplements, as will those who abuse alcohol or drugs.

- Cold water oily fish are especially rich in Omega-3 but because they contain lots of cholesterol they must be eaten sparingly. You can eat two small servings twice a week.


- We do not need more sugar or sweets than we get in our daily diet. The bread and rice that we consume is changed by the liver into the sugar that the body needs every day. One way to keep the blood sugar stable is to eat whole grain bread and brown rice which pass into the bloodstream after being slowly absorbed by the intestines.


The stability of the blood sugar caused by these foods make us feel satisfied for a long time. This balance is delicately adjusted, but in any case if you are craving for sugar satisfy it by eating natural sweets such as dates, figs or a dried apricots.
