San Jose Schools Changes School Nutrition and Limits Junk Food


Changes for the 2006-2007 School Year at San Jose Schools

Following in the footsteps of both federal and state trends to limit junk food and provide better nutrition to students, San Jose Schools will implement new some changes starting in September 2006. These changes may appear sudden but actually is part of a long term goal for improving student nutrition. San Jose Schools have been working to improve student nutrition over the past few years. San Jose Schools have already removed fried chips and carbonated beverages from all kindergarten-eighth grade schools. A lot of the changes occurring in September are a result of new federal laws.


The new policy states that for a school to receive federal funds for their school lunch program they must institute a Wellness Policy. The Wellness Policy is a nutrition program that is designed and approved by the school board. In order to better meet these guidelines the San Jose Schools have created the SHAPE committee. The SHAPE committee is made up of school food service personnel, a school board member, district employees, health care professionals, concerned parents, and community members.


Nutrition Guidelines for Foods Available at San Jose Schools

The San Jose School Board is planning to adopt a series of new guidelines covering the nutritional concerns of students. This is done in order to meet to the growing concerns about student health and reducing childhood obesity. The San Jose School Board believes that there was a growing disparity between the foods available at school and the health curriculum. Strict guidelines have been adopted all foods and beverages sold to students, including foods and beverages provided through the San Jose School's food service program, student stores, vending machines, or fundraisers.


The new policy also set guidelines for the San Jose School's staff in using food items as a reward; the staff will be encouraged to use healthy alternatives or a different non-food choice as a reward for students' academic performance, accomplishments, or classroom behavior. There is a plan to help parents by providing healthy foods list. The guidelines per food item include: No more than 35% of total calories from fat excluding legumes, nuts, nut butters, seeds, eggs, vegetables that have not been deep fried and cheese packaged for individual sale; No more than 10% of total calories from saturated fat; No more than 35% added sugar by weight; 175 Calories (elementary schools) and 250 Calories (middle and high schools). While an individually sold entrée may have no more than 4 grams of fat per 100 calories, 400 calories total.

Eating the Right Food and Maintaining Good Eating Habits is Essential to Enjoying Proper Nutrition on the Road

How many times have you been on a business trip and just been too busy to have a proper lunch? With today's fast-paced lifestyle, it is important to follow these essential guidelines to proper nutrition and good eating habits on the road. When selecting meat, poultry, dry beans, and milk or milk products, make choices that are lean, low-fat or fat-free. Eating the right food means consuming a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables. Select from all five vegetable subgroups (dark green, orange, legumes, starchy vegetables and other vegetables) several times a week.


The Nutrition Policy

The Nutrition Policy states that all food on a San Jose Schools campus must meet the state nutritional guidelines for fat and sugar and fat content. The biggest effect of this policy for parents is that homemade baked goods will not be allowed on campus. San Jose Schools will make more snakes available at schools that meet these guidelines and provide a list of approved store bought snakes. Fundraisers that involve the sale of food items must be planned with and agreed to by the school. The San Jose Schools will actively encourage fundraisers that are not based around food sale but instead are based around physical activity. All San Jose Schools, including high schools, will ban carbonated soft drinks this school year. Classroom parties with food will be limited to one per month.


Consume three or more ounce-equivalents of whole-grain products per day. In general, at least half the grains should come from whole grains. As part of your good eating habits during your travels, consume three cups per day of fat-free or low-fat milk or equivalent milk products. Consume less than 10 percent of calories from saturated fatty acids and less than 300 mg/day of cholesterol, and keep trans-fatty acid consumption as low as possible. Keep total fat intake between 20 to 35 percent of calories. For those long trips, choose beverages with little added sugars or caloric sweeteners.


Most importantly, eating the right food on the road should not jeopardize your safety or that of other drives. Do not drive and eat at the same time, since you lose track of the type and quantities of food you are consuming as well as distracting you from your driving. Remember that proper nutrition can make the difference between feeling great and feeling just okay--especially when traveling. Proper nutrition is easy to maintain, even on the road. In fact, all you need to do to ensure your health and well being is to follow the simple steps, outlined above.

Food Food Everywhere but Not a Drop of Nutrition


The title maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but I wanted to draw your attention to a serious issue regarding the food we eat.

Fact One:


Since 1963, the beautiful tomato has lost 61% of there calcium. Other so-called healthy foods are losing nutrition at a similarly alarming rate. As conscientious food consumers, struggling to put quality, good tasting food on the family table, the findings suggest that the foods we eat are not as healthy as we thought. This decline goes back several decades. I remember reading an article my a doctor in the pages of (I believe) Omni magazine, describing the decay of nutrition in our food, to such and extent that we faced third world mal-nutrition in a society awash with food. I went on a vitamin, buying binge at the time to counter act the loss of nutrition in our food. I follow the good doctors instructions on the vitamins and minerals I should take religiously. I even choked down a nasty tasting tincture of iodine and water.


This obsession passed when I move to a place where I could grow my own food using good organic methods that return nutrients to the soil. I spent ten years on a farm with lots of room to have a huge vegetable garden and my concern waned. However, I'm back in town, just in time for the issue to rise it's ugly head again. The cause for the decline of nutritional quality of our food appears to be our intensive farming methods that rely on inorganic fertilizers, (the same stuff terrorist use to blow things up, isn't that scary) along with intensive irrigation that leaches the soil. This causes a build up of unwanted elements in the soils, such as higher sodium levels. Lack of crop rotation also contributes. Crop rotation, once the norm for most family farms, taught that different crops take different nutrients from the soil and often leave behind a nutrient the next crop can use. As an example, legume crops are used to fix nitrogen in the soil.


Fact Two:

The carbohydrate content of broccoli (the iconic health food) has increased by 15% since 1963, and the salt levels in almost everything have risen dramatically over a similar period. Take that fact and the rising incidence of high blood pressure and you get a glimmer of the consequences of our industrial farming.In another article I recently read, the author points to the way we feed our food animals as cause for serious concern. His example concerned steers raised for food on grain, because it fattened up the beef for market. You have all heard the stories of feedlots where animals are sent just before going to market. These animals are fed grains, something not part of their natural diet, grass. The consequences of such a diet leads to mal-nutrition and disease.


Quite recently, the stories of Avian Flue and a coming Pandemic has brought to the forefront the way we raise our food animals. What once made common sense seems to have been lost in a mountain of hype. I remember my Granddad warning against feeding animals their own flesh and the diseases that result, back in the 1960, and this was passed down knowledge from his Dad!

Yet, animals are still being fed food that contains animal by products!


How to Protect Your Family

Think carefully about what you buy to minimize your exposure to these dangerous foods. Buy organic, preferably from the farm gate. This can be difficult but there are buying clubs spring up all over the country and farm gate marketing is staging a major revival. Many families now make the trip to an organic market garden part of fun family activates.


Where possible, get to know your butcher. My butcher, Larry, knows the farmers he buys his meat from. He goes out of his way to find you exactly what you are looking for. Grass feed beef, ah yes; Gerry up the road raises all his beef that way. Range raised organic chicken, that's Margaret over in such and such.


Reduce your consumption of processed foods. These days' fresh vegetable, fish, and meat are nearly always available. Follow the good old Italian tradition of eating with the season.Finding your food maybe a little more difficult, than at the huge food factory grocery store, but the effort will contribute to your family's health.


Finally, educate your self.

Armed with knowledge you can avoid that slightly pink thing signed as a field grown, vine ripened "tomato" with low calcium, high sodium, no taste and as hard as rock. After all, if a tomato doesn't taste like a tomato, it probably isn't a tomato.

Increasing Longevity Through Better Nutrition

In an archipelago southwest of Japan, lies the island of Okinawa, which is home to the healthiest population of centenarians (people over 100 years old) on earth. They suffer fewer instances of cancer, diabetes and heart attacks. Their secrets include a more nutrient based diet and less stressful living.Okinawan centenarians stay lean by eating fewer calories than they burn off during the day. They maintain a healthy weight. For them, meals are a social event where the focus is on the social interaction and not the food itself. They eat until they are almost full before they get stuffed.


It takes 20 minutes for the body to signal to the brain that is it full. Americans like to eat until they are stuffed. You can use a hunger rating system to monitor your level of satisfaction. During a meal, rate your hunger on a scale of 1 to 5- (1 is famished and 5 is stuffed.) By just taking the time to think about how you actually feel, you are less likely to overeat. They eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins. They include fish and soy in their diet. They eat more food but less calories since the foods they choose have more nutrients, greater bulk and fewer calories per gram. Besides feeling fuller, eating a diet rich in vegetables and fruits and low in saturated fats from animal proteins have been shown to significantly cut your risk of chronic disease.


You want to make sure you eat within one hour of waking up. In other words, do not skip breakfast! If you take away just one thing from this article, let it be that you should eat a big and nutritious meal within one hour of waking up. Furthermore, do not eat within two hours of going to bed. The last thing you want is food sitting in your stomach when your metabolism is at its slowest. Most people know which foods they should stay away from. The obvious ones include desserts, high-fat meals, candy, fast food and fried food. In fact, most people will feel a big difference simply by staying away from these kinds of foods.


They eat locally grown foods, so their food choices are fresher, riper and more flavorful. They are also always changing their dietary intake so the constant changing of nutrients helps build their resistance to chronic illness. They also engage in many physical activities daily. They tend to exercise in the evening to relieve their daily stress and get their bodies ready for rest. They go to bed early and take naps during the day giving their bodies the proper sleep.


A major part of their diet is seafood which provides omega-3 fatty acids. These fats protect the body from heart disease, depression and Alzheimer's because they reduce arterial inflammation. Another stable in their diet is soy which is made up of antioxidant-rich proteins. You can try to get more fish into your diet. Try to get some soy into your diet at least once a week.

Good Nutrition Made Easy

Good nutrition is critical to a healthy lifestyle, yet there is so much information out there, most people do not have a clear understanding as to what they should and should not be eating. This article will simplify things. First off, no more will you eat three big meals during the course of the day. To optimize your metabolism and your digestive system, break the day down with five to six small and nutritious meals. We will cover what these meals should be in a second. When you clog your system with three big meals, your metabolism slows down and your digestive system cannot handle all the food. As a result, you end up with partially-digested food and, for most people, a tired and fatigued feeling.


The not-so-obvious ones include:

1. Pasta (with the exception being wheat pasta)

2. Fat-free foods (because they are filled with sugar and chemicals)

3. Most frozen meals (because of all the preservatives)

4. Processed meats like fake cold cuts (because of all the preservatives and chemicals)

5. Soda and juices (because of the sugar)

6. Creamy meals (because of the fat)


Furthermore, start getting in the habit of reading the ingredients of the food you buy. If sugar is one of the first three ingredients listed, do not buy it. And if you see hydrogenated oils listed anywhere in the list of ingredients, stay far away. These kinds of fats, called Trans fats, wreck havoc on your body.


As far as what to eat, buying anything at the grocery from the following list is a straight path to better health. These foods include:

1. Fruits like bananas, berries and apples

2. Whole grains including bread and pasta

3. Oatmeal (not the microwave, sugar mix)

4. Low-fat dairy including milk and yogurt

5. Chicken, turkey and fish

6. Vegetables like spinach, squash and tomatoes

7. Olive oil and fresh garlic

8. Eggs

9. Natural peanut butter (the regular kind contains hydrogenated oils)

10. Beans and legumes

11. Almonds and other nuts

12. Water


Simply focus on staying away from the foods you should not eat and buy more of the foods listed above. You will find that the longer you make an effort to do this, the more will power you will slowly develop. Obviously sometimes you are going to slip, but this is not about perfection. Make a conscious effort to improve your eating habits and you will notice a huge difference in how you look and feel. After all, you are what you eat.
