The Importance of Fruit and Vegetable Juices in Nutrition

A man's health is a very important aspect of his life. To say that "health is wealth" is not only to utter an old, used up mantra, but to mean that for most human beings, staying fit and healthy is parallel to being wealthy, for a person's everyday life is influenced mainly by the state of his mind and body, especially by the presence and absence of certain diseases.

Unbalanced intake of nutrients, for one, may cause excessive or deficient nutrient intake, which will definitely affect the body's normal functions.

Many people go through various efforts to stay fit, maintain good health, and ensure their longevity. Examples of these practices include engaging in rigorous physical fitness training, eating a balanced and healthy diet, maintaining ideal weight, and employing an effective stress management procedure. It is also important to stop smoking, reduce alcohol intake, and avoid the use of prohibited substances. Poor health can be caused by a host of different factors, such as poor eating habits, lack of exercise, stress, and excessive smoking and alcohol intake.

These nutrients are necessary for a person's growth, metabolism, and other functions. There are about six nutrients, which are needed by the human body in different amounts to perform its various processes. These are: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, or nutrients that are known to provide energy to the body; and minerals, vitamins, and water, or those nutrients that support the body's metabolism.

Water, the last nutrient in the list, is sometimes called the forgotten nutrient, but it is considered as the most important. Water is necessary for the body's growth and metabolic processes. It runs through the blood and lymphatic system, carries oxygen and distributes nutrients to the cells, and rids the body of toxins and wastes in the form of urine and sweat. If water and its other liquid substitutes are not present in the human diet, food digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste excretion would be impossible.

The human body is made up of two-thirds water. It needs eight to ten glasses of water or caffeine- and alcohol-free liquids to replace the water it loses during the day. The body's need for water is satisfied by the intake of other drinking liquids free from caffeine and alcohol, such as juices; fruits and vegetables, which are made of 80 to 95% water; meat products, which are made of 50% water; and cereals like rice and oats, which can contain as much as 35% water.

Fruit juices, on the other hand, have been scientifically proven to give certain health benefits, provided that they are taken in moderation. Nutritionists also suggest that fruit juices should be taken in their pure state, and people should only drink 100% fruit juice. Cranberry juice is believed to prevent urinary tract infections; grape juice is believed to lower the chances of blood clots in the heart; and orange juice is believed to prevent stroke and reduce the risk of heart attacks.

Though these popular beliefs have no scientific basis to their therapeutic claims, most scientists say that many fruit juices are indeed healthy to drink. Pure orange juice, for example, is very rich in Vitamin C, potassium, and folic acid. Other fruit juices that are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and anthocynanins (water soluble pigments found in plants which act as antioxidants) include grape juice (purple), pomegranate juice, and cranberry juice. It is believed that juices that are made from fruits with rich colors such as grapes, pomegranates, cranberries, and blueberries are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. New juices from black currants and Tahitian noni have also found their way in the international market.

Recent scientific studies have also claimed that the antioxidants found in most fruits and vegetable juices can help lower a person's risks of developing Alzheimer's disease. Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in most plants and have the potential to help combat heart diseases and fight cancer. Freshly squeezed juices from fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of minerals and vitamins which catalyze chemical reactions occurring in the body. These enzymes also produce the energy needed for digestion, absorption, and conversion of food into body tissues. An increased intake of fruit and vegetable juices ensures that the body will efficiently absorb more minerals and vitamins.

Another helpful benefit of fruits and fruit juices is their ability to promote detoxification in the human body. Fruits help to cleanse the body, especially those with high acid levels. Tomatoes, pineapples, and citruses such as oranges, red grapefruits, and lemons are known for their detoxifying properties. While these fruits promote cleansing, they still provide the body with a high boost of Vitamin C!

Nutrition - Dog Food or Junk Food

For a long time I've felt, believed and experienced that nutrition is key to health. Junk goes in and the result is poor health. Maybe not immediately but definitely it will add up to a toxic level and cause poor health. This goes for all living things. No one or being lives forever, obviously, however we want to extend the time we have and make the time we have a healthy one.

During my hundreds and hundreds of hours research in investigating dog foods I found the most remarkable things. Some of what I found was shocking and other facts were down right disgusting. For starters, the dog food industry is totally unregulated meaning that manufacturers can, and do, put whatever they want into "food". There are documented reports of animal waste products, ground up dog carcasses, and other animal wastes put into dog foods. These acts are not myths or legends unfortunately.

Among the ingredients in about 99.99% of dog foods you find sugar, salt, corn, phosphates, artificial flavors and colorings. It appears as if the simple dog food has turned into a fast food garbage dump. Dogs are naturally carnivores and scavengers however since their domestication they have relied on a lot of human help in the nutrition arena. As we have moved from fresh foods to processed foods so have our dogs. Just like us our dogs have now inherited human like modern diseases (from cancer, diabetes, and skin ailments to early death).

Let me explain. The processing of and extracting of "nutritional value" causes molecular differences between food and these "vitamins". The result is that the body doesn't assimilate it. Here are list of some of the things you loose with fractionated vitamins over foods: compound vitamins and minerals, trace minerals, enzymes, flavonoids, carotenoids, pigments, terpenes, chlorophyll, coenzymes, covitamins, amino acids and much more.

Animals aren't designed to consume fractionated nutrition. Animals are designed to consume food not chemicals. The concept that altered nutrition fulfills the body's requirements is false. This goes for all animals not just humans. So, the movement toward providing dogs with raw (BARF diet) and pure foods is a fantastic one. As a dog owner I know it can be rough to provide and shop for my dogs like they are humans but it is necessary for them to be healthy and live long lives.

The Nutrition Wonder - Omega 3 Fish Oil

Omega 3 fish oil is the undisputed health supplement choice of many - and not without reason. This nutritional wonder is classified as a polyunsaturated fatty acid.

Veterinarian Dr Jane Bicks has written that dogs should be living in the range of 18-25 years old. This has been supported by friends of mine from other countries where dogs who eat "closer to the earth" commonly live to those ages. Basically we are killing our dog with processed foods. I must admit to having certain biases based upon personal experience, knowledge about health, and what I've learned. For example, there is a lot of literature on the inability of animals to assimilate fractioned nutrition. What is fractionated nutrition? It is vitamins and supplements. Check the super market or even some of the premium dog food brands and you'll find them packed with vitamins and supplements. But, that doesn't mean they are good!

The human body needs the following classes of fatty acids for their very survival:

Cholesterols Saturated fats Mono saturated fats and Polyunsaturated fatty acids of the likes of Omega 3 fish oil

Fish Oil Health Benefits...

The Nutrition wonder of modern times - Omega 3 Fish oil -- is overwhelmingly advocated as the nutrient of choice for a healthy heart -- recommended by none other than the American Heart Association. The benefits of fish oil, however, are much more numerous than just a healthy heart. For starters, the human body would well die without the requisite content of some specific fatty acids and it is not without reason that these fatty acids are more familiarly known as Essential Fatty Acids (EFA).

These fatty acids are better classified as:

Omega - 3 Fatty acids and Omega - 6 Fatty acids

The Health Ratio...

The human body needs and ingests two kinds of fats, which are indispensable for healthy well being -- Omega-3 and Omega-6. The optimal ratio for a healthy human would well be 1:1 ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6. On the contrary, the average American diet is often constituted of the ratio in the range of 20:1 to even as high as 50:1 -- which could well translate into a health disaster in the years to come.

The omega-6 fats are primarily sourced from soy, corn, safflower and sunflower oils. On the contrary, Omega-3 are sourced from walnut and fish oils. The benefits of fish oils then could scarcely be better underlined considering that of all the sources of Omega-3 fats -- the preferred source being fatty fish -- especially fish rich in EPA and DHA -- both of which are fatty acids crucial for human health.

Fish Oil Health Benefits...

The therapeutically beneficial effects of Omega 3 Fish oil could well be innumerable to say the least. The following conditions may benefit:

Cardiac Diseases - Angina, Cardiac Arrhythmias, Congestive Cardiac failure Cognitive Decline Malignancies Autoimmue conditions Skin problems

The benefits of fish oil are myriad, and some evidence has shown potential promise for also...

Raynaud's disease Diabetes Arthritis Ulcerative Colitis Maniac Depressive Psychosis Schizophrenia

Omega 3 fish oil Dosage...

To get the benefits of fish oil...

Fish oil capsules containing 120 mg DHA and 180 mg EPA and the omega 3 fish oil is best consumed in the dose of: one capsule for every ten pounds of body weight preferably ingested in two divided doses. The doses being ideally taken on an empty stomach to offset the undesirable gastrointestinal effects of the likes of belching.

The Nature takes care of baby's wholesome nutrition

There is a well-known fact saying that "culinary habits" come from childhood. That is why parents should pay special attention to their child's nutrition. Food constraint can bring irreparable physical and psychological harm to a child. Parents' constant persuasion while their baby is eating can not only have negative effect on the process of digestion itself, but also may cause further food allergy. Aren't it better to examine closely, listen to what child's organism needs, how, what and how many he wants to eat?

If baby's taste is not perverted and his metabolism is not affected yet, then you should be curious about what he wants to eat. Don't force your child to eat fast, it's better to develop a habit to chew food well. Then his alimentary canal will not have to "complete" the work his teeth and salivary glands haven't done. Speed of eating, temperature of food is his private affair, though.

You shouldn't be afraid if your child refuses to eat at all. Don't panic. This means that something goes wrong in his organism and the Nature just suggests him a way of short-term hunger treatment. Show patience and tenacity. Very soon your child will come running to you asking to eat some certain food. You should not resort to any food encouragement, temptations, don't use sweets as a reward for his good behavior. While observing your child's choice of food you give to him, you can make important conclusions about his health condition and organism needs. And the main thing is that you should rely on your child's instinct.

If you have succeeded not to spoil it yet, let him choose what, when, how many and in what combination and consecution he should eat or drink. Quite often, food fermentation appears in alimentary canal, as a result of regular feeding with meat and bread, pap with milk and sugar, sweet pies. Frequently, this leads to child's tonsillitis, diarrhea, constipation, gastritis, un-reasoned rise in temperature and allergy. When some parents overfeed their children, they pave the way for adiposity, which inevitably leads to a whole bouquet of sicknesses. You should not also forget about an important fact of the organism process of preparation for eating. A term "psychology of eating", meaning company, dining room atmosphere, its lighting and the music sounding in, can be included in the concept "culture of eating".

Optimising Nutrition On A Vegetarian Diet

While a vegetarian diet is among the healthiest ways to eat, certain nutrients can be lacking on a diet that contains no animal products at all. In particular, many people are concerned that vegans may not get enough protein, calcium and iron from plant-based foods. This is because most people think of eating dairy products for calcium and meats for iron and protein. But it is possible to consume adequate amounts of these nutrients on vegetarian diet. It just takes bit of effort and knowledge about plant-based sources the nutrients.

Iron is an important mineral because it plays a vital role in transporting oxygen through the bloodstream. People who do not have adequate iron intake can suffer from iron deficiency anemia, a condition characterized by extreme fatigue and weakness. Adult men and post-menopausal women need about 10 mg of iron per day, while women of child-bearing age need about 15 mg per day. There are two types of iron - heme iron (from meat) and non-heme iron (from plant sources). Though non-heme iron is generally not as easily absorbed as heme iron, the incidence of iron deficiency anemia is no higher in vegans than in the general population.

Dried beans and dark leafy green vegetables can provide adequate amounts of dietary iron if consumed on a regular basis. To boost absorption of iron, iron-rich plant foods should be consumed with vitamin C supplements or foods rich in vitamin C. Since vegans diets tend to be high in vitamin C naturally, iron consumption is really not as much of a problem for most vegans as might be expected. In fact, some foods, like broccoli and bok choy, are high in both iron and vitamin C. These foods are often eaten with other iron and vitamin C-rich foods, such as beans and tomato sauce.

Another important nutrient for vegetarians to consider is calcium. Adults need about 1000 mg of calcium per day. Most people think of dairy products when they think of calcium, which important for strong bones and teeth. But vegans can get plenty of calcium from dark greens, tofu processed with calcium sulfate, and other foods or from calcium supplements. Soymilk and rice milk are often fortified with calcium as well. Other good sources of calcium for vegans include blackstrap molasses, fortified orange juice, tahini and almonds. It is important to note that a compound known as oxalic acid, found in vegetables like spinach, rhubarb, chard, and beet greens, can bind with calcium and prevent it from being well absorbed. Therefore, greens like broccoli and collards are better sources of calcium for vegans.

Though there is much concern about vegetarians getting enough protein, the need for protein is often overrated. The average diet contains far more protein needed for health. In fact, excess protein can damage the kidneys and contribute to the development of osteoporosis. The recommended daily allowance of protein is 8/10ths of a gram for every kilogram of body weight or about 10-15% of total calories. Foods like soy, rice and beans, and nuts and nut butters can provide adequate amounts of protein for vegans. In contrast, animal foods are so high in protein that non-vegetarians can easily exceed the upper limit recommended for protein intake, which is 4.5 grams of protein per 100 calories of food.

Protein is comprised of amino acids, which are often called protein building blocks. The body needs nine different amino acids from foods. Because the body cannot make these nine amino acids, they are known as essential amino acids. Foods that contain all nine essential amino acids are considered "complete protein" foods. Non-vegan vegetarians can easily get all nine amino acids from eggs and dairy products. For vegans, soy protein, which is a complete protein, is often considered the best source. The nine essential amino acids can also be obtained by combining whole grain rice and beans. Other vegan sources of high quality protein include the grain quinoa and spinach. Eating a variety of legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds daily ensures that vegans consume all of the protein they need.

More tips on how vegetarians can maximize consumption of key nutrients as well as more detailed information about the amounts of calcium, iron and protein found in a variety of vegetarian foods can be found in the ebook Vegetarian Cooking at

Sleep, Nutrition and Exercise?

While some of us think that sleep is a total waste of time and is only necessary so we do not collapse, this is a mistake. Some of the latest researches inform us that sleeping less than six hours a day can cause diabetes. The researchers seem to think that lack of sleep affects a certain hormone that is responsible for depressing the appetite. What happens as a result of a diminished sleep is that the organism produces less of this hormone, hence - there is no stopping of our desire for food.

Bad sleeping habits would thus make you eat more, gain overweight and would increase the sugar level in your blood. Once you begin eating in weird hours, your nutrition is in danger. No diet would be able to restrain you. Professionals suggest that one should sleep between six to eight hours a day. Good healthy sleep would not only make you feel better, but will in fact do you better. It is important to try and go to sleep at the same time, so your body would learn to function in a certain regime.

Partially hydrogenated fat comes from oil that would normally be liquid at room temperature but has been chemically processed to become solid at room temperature. Thus, creating a longer shelf life in food. Partially hydrogenated fat poses a greater threat to clogging our blood arteries than butter, lard and other saturated fats that are naturally solid at room temperature. So, you may ask, what is a reasonable solution to not eating microwave meals? Get back to the basics! Eating fresh fruits, vegetables, whole foods and drinking plenty of water is an excellent basic nutritional plan.

Also, prevent yourself from having large meals before rest time and know the health effects of caffeine. Caffeine puts me to sleep actually better than anything, yet I try to consume it as less as possible. You all know the heavy feeling in the stomach when eating just before bedtime. Our body often times knows what's good and what's bad for us, all we have to do is listen to it.

What one can do before going to bed is a little exercise: I do not mean jogging for an hour, although it would of course be profitable, I mean spending about 20 minutes on stretching out and the like. Try and make a habit of it and also of getting a good night rest; our body is also a kind of a machine - treat it well and it will serve you good. Have a goodnight everybody!

Nutrition Basics

Today our diets are full of processed foods; Foods that man has tampered with, not to benefit our bodies but to give the food a longer shelf life to increase corporate profits. We are eating fast foods which are filled with fat, salt, sugar and consequently we are eating ourselves to death. High combination of processed foods is a primary cause of obesity and contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer. One of the most commonly used food processing agents is partially hydrogenated oil (fat). Foods we do not need to prepare, just heat and eat, are typically filled with partially hydrogenated oil (fat).

Also, we need to consider that most whole foods which are not organically grown do not have as much health and vitality in them as they would if farm land were given a chance to rest every 7th year. God said in Leviticus, chapter 25, verses 3 thru 6 that we should work the land 6 years and let the land rest the 7th year. However, God has allowed man to use technology to put herbs, vitamins and minerals in concentrated liquid or pill form so we may use such supplements to provide balance in our nutritional needs. We should supplement our diets with the advice of qualified health professionals.

I encourage you to read food product labels and educate yourself on good nutritional values. You only get one body and it makes good sense to take care of it. The closer a food product is to its natural state, the higher its quality....the higher quality food can help maintain health as well as quicken recovery from sickness. Eat fresh and natural foods, in this state, all of the enzymes are found intact. The amino acids are in their finest form, the minerals, vitamins, trace elements or "life force" are all present and in turn is capable of helping you to maintain and/or reproduce healthy tissue.
