Health Energy Nutrition

Health, energy, and nutrition have become the primary focus in today's society. Everywhere you look there are ads for nutritious foods, energy drinks, buys for the health-conscious shopper. But unfortunately, today's fast paced world leaves very little time for you to devote to yourself, even enough time to exercise. Day to day routines can be so hectic and exhausting; you're too tired even to think about being active after a hard day of working. Energy drinks are highly popular right now, and the temptation is to pop open a can of energy so you can do more, be even more on the go, get that much more done in a single day. But...energy drinks aren't really healthy or very good for your nutrition. They are notoriously filled with sugar and caffeine, both things that you body doesn't need.

As more and more consumers are becoming health-conscious, the market is slowly beginning to change.

So where does that leave you?

"Energy drinks are different from sports drinks. Most energy drinks simply provide lots of sugar or caffeine. Sports drinks are intended to replenish electrolytes, sugars, water and other nutrients and are usually isotonic (containing the same proportions as found in the human body)."- Wikipedia, Energy Drink, May 2006

Discovered in China, tea has swept the world and become a staple of many cultures around the globe. China, the world's leader of tea, still produces more varieties of tea than any other country. For five thousand years, claims have been made that green tea is beneficial to your health. Recently, more and more studies are being done of green tea and scientists are discovering that these claims are not wholly false.

"An article in New Scientist magazine (20 March 2004) mentions that numerous studies suggest that green tea protects against a range of cancers, including lung, prostate and breast cancer."- Wikipedia, Green Tea, May 2006

Zsenso iced green tea and Zsenso iced peach green tea, made of rare Chinese green tea leaves, can be a health-friendly alternative to sugary, highly caffeinated energy drinks. Look for Zsenso iced tea products in your area, or purchase Zsenso iced green teas online.

But, if you like a lot variety in your energy drinks, XS energy drinks are the best choice for you. XS energy drinks are available in all options: caffeine-free, zero-carb, and sugar free choices. The list of flavours goes on and on: rootbeer, cranberry-grape, tropical, citrus, cherry, tea-berry, and electric lemon, to name a few. In caffeine-free versions, buyers can find rootbeer blast, cranberry-grape blast, and tropical blast.

You can be health conscious, care about nutrition, and still find an energy drink that won't do you more harm than good - as long as you know where to look for it. XS energy drinks and Zsenso iced green teas will taste great and won't fill you up with sugar and carbs that will hurt more than help. Energy drinks that can be healthy, too? You'd have to drink it to believe it!

Diet, Nutrition & Diabetes

INTRODUCTION Food is vital to life and well-being. It may be defined as any solid or liquid substance which when consumed provides the necessary materials or nutrients to enable the body to grow, replace worn-out and damaged parts and to function optimally. The intimate life sustaining relationship between food and man is called nutrition.

One way of ensuring that health and fitness are maintained is to have an understanding of food and its benefits and to use this knowledge to prevent common life style diseases such as diabetes. It affects 150 million people worldwide and this number is predicted to double by the year 2025. Diabetes is a preventable or controllable disorder but if allowed to go unabated and untreated can contribute to premature deaths, blindness, infections, amputations and loss of valuable human potential.

CAUSES OF DIABETES § Not confirmed. § May be hereditary and/or environmental. § Viruses or obesity may precipitate the disease.

TYPES OF DIABETES There are basically two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2.

TYPE 1 Type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM): § Occurs between the ages 1-40. § Accounts for 10-20 % of all diabetic cases. § Characterized by little insulin being produced. § Rapid onset. § Requires insulin injections and carefully controlled diet. § Sometimes this form of diabetes may be difficult to treat.

TYPE 2 Type 2 diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM): § Occurs between the ages 40 and over. § Accounts for 80-90 % of most cases of diabetes worldwide. § Type 2 diabetes develops when the production of insulin is insufficient to overcome the underlying abnormality of increased resistance to its action. The early stages of type 2 diabetes are characterized by overproduction of insulin.

As the disease progresses, process insulin levels may fall as a result of partial failure of the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas. § Chronic onset. § Requires controlled diet, exercise, or oral glucose lowering medication. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF DIABETES § Extreme thirst. § Poor concentration. § Frequent urination. § Abnormal concentrations of glucose in blood. § Wasting of body tissue, causing a marked reduction in body weight. § Weakness. § Fatigue. § Nerve damage. § Retina degeneration. § Arteriosclerosis. § Ketosis. § Retina degeneration. § Blindness. § Nerve degeneration and lack of sensation in arms, legs and other body parts. § Infections of the urinary tract; kidneys, bladder, ureter and urethra.

COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES Complications of diabetes include: § Blindness. § Kidney failure. § Foot ulceration, which may lead to gangrene and subsequent amputation. § Increased risk of infections. § Coronary heart disease and stroke. § The enormous and escalating economic and social costs of type 2 diabetes.

WORLDWIDE TRENDS AND ADVANCES IN DIABETES § The prevalence and incidence of diabetes have increased globally in both developing and developed countries transition. § Worldwide, the number of cases of diabetes is currently estimated to be around 150 million. This number is predicted to double by 2025, with the greatest number of cases being expected in China and India.

These numbers may represent an underestimate and there are likely to be many undiagnosed cases. § Previously a disease of the middle-aged and elderly, diabetes has recently escalated in all age groups and is now being identified in younger and younger age groups, including adolescents and children, especially in high-risk populations. § In Caucasian populations, much of the excess mortality as a result of diabetes is attributable to cardiovascular disease, especially coronary heart disease; amongst Asian and

American Indian populations, renal disease is a major contributor, whereas in some developing nations, infections are an important cause of death. § In all societies where overweight and obesity are prevalent there may be an increased risk of diabetes. § Increased physical activity reduces the risk of developing diabetes.

SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MANAGEMENT & TREATMENT OF DIABETES Measures aimed at reducing overweight and obesity, and cardiovascular disease are likely to also reduce the risk of developing diabetes and its complications. Lifestyle modification is pivotal in both treatment and attempts to prevent diabetes.

Some measures are particularly relevant to reducing the risk for diabetes; these are listed below:

§ Adopting an exchange diet lists, for example using the lists developed by the American Diabetes Association and American Dietetic Association lists food with interchangeable nutrients and kcal contents used in specific forms of diet therapy. Using the exchange lists, food categorized by type contains approximately equal amounts of kcal, carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

This means that one food type can be substituted for any other food types and still provide the patient with the prescribed types and amounts of nutrients and kcal. § Prevention/treatment of overweight and obesity, particularly in highrisk groups through educational and selective feeding programmes. § Improving the nutritional status of young children. § Promoting linear growth and preventing energy excess by limiting intake of energy-dense foods, controlling the quality of fat supply, and facilitating physical activity. §

Maintaining an optimum Body Mass Index (BMI), i.e. at the lower end of the normal range. For the adult population, this means maintaining a mean BMI in the range 21-23 kg/m2 and avoiding weight gain (>5 kg) in adult life. § Practicing an endurance activity at moderate or greater level of intensity (e.g. brisk walking) for one hour or more per day on most days per week. § Ensuring that the dietary intake of saturated fat does not exceed 10 % of total energy and for high-risk groups, fat intake should be < 7 % of total energy. § Achieving adequate intake of wholegrain cereals, legumes, fruits and vegetables.

A minimum daily intake of 20 g is recommended. CONCLUSION Providing optimum nourishment in the diet for patients may prevent symptoms and delay complications of diabetes. Treatment of diabetes must be individually tailored to the patient needs and lifestyle. Diet alone or by a diet combined with insulin or glucose lowering medication cannot achieve maximum benefits. The treatment regime must include regulated exercise and regular monitoring of the blood glucose levels. It is important to reassure the diabetic patient that one can live a near-normal life if the diet is followed, medication is taken as prescribed and sufficient time is allowed for rest and exercise. Meals should be eaten at regular intervals. Additionally, adjustments should be made to shopping, cooking and eating habits.

Guidance on the Proper Nutrition for Teens

Although it is a difficult task to watch over the health of your teenage child, it is an important time of growth and development for him or her. As your teenager moves into adulthood, his or her body goes through rapid changes, many with permanent effects. It is important to ensure that your teenager is getting the right nutritional balance each day. The best way to do this is to provide your teenager with the resources that he or she needs in order to know the consequences and benefits of dietary choices. In doing this, you can help your teenager to want to eat the right type of meals each day.

Vigorous exercise (i.e. training to an intensity of 80-90% of age-predicted maximum heart rate for at least 20 minutes, at least five times per week) has the potential to substantially enhance insulin sensitivity. § Higher consumption of saturated fatty acids has been associated with higher fasting insulin, lower insulin sensitivity and a higher risk of diabetes. § Higher consumption of unsaturated fatty acids from vegetable sources and polyunsaturated fatty acids has been associated with a reduced risk of diabetes and lower fasting and 2-hour glucose concentrations. § Higher consumption of wholegrain cereals, vegetables and fruits in the diet has been associated with a reduced risk of progression of impaired glucose tolerance.

Issues concerning teenagers today

Of course when dealing with teenagers on health or any other topic, you have to recognize the powerful influence that their peers have and will have on them. Teenagers are also prone to developing personal issues with their looks. The rapid changes in their bodies also present them with a feeling of awkwardness in their appearances.

Be aware of any behavioral signs of anorexia or bulimia. These are more and more common diseases among teenagers who suffer from issues of self-esteem. If you monitor your teenager enough to be sure that he or she is eating healthy food each day, you will not have to be as concerned with these issues.

Educating your teenager about proper nutrition

Teenagers need a full nutritional complement every day. In addition to making sure that your teen eats a well balanced diet, including all five food groups, you should also make provision for them to receive nutrients they may not be receiving in their daily diets. Because teenagers are at an age of partial autonomy, they will make decisions on a daily basis such as whether to eat out or grab a snack at a vending machine. Educate your teenager on what nutrients are in the foods that he or she eats as well as what nutrients his or her body needs every day. Do this and you provide the proper information that your teenager needs to formulate and adapt meals to include the nutrients that will make him or her healthy. More importantly, your teenager will know how to grow a healthy body, one that he or she can be proud.

For most parents, it is only feasible on weekdays to monitor either a teenager's breakfast or supper. Provide your teenager with several nutritional options on those times that you are around. Doing so may help encourage your teenager to make healthier choices when you aren't around. Have nutritious food options around the house and set a good example for your teenager to follow. Remember that when you are not around, your teenager is more likely to do what you do than what you say to do.

Engage your teenager in healthy physical activities

Do not forget that good teen health is more than just providing the proper nutrients. A teenager must also be active and exercise the body. Encourage your teenage child to join a gym or health club if he or she is uninterested in participating in sports at school. While your teenager may decide that these are not viable options, you should still let your teenager know that you feel it would be a healthful benefit.

Helping your teenager make the right choices

As your teenager gets older and gains increasing independence, he or she will make more and more choices about food and exercise. Your guidance along the way can help your teenager learn how to make these decisions thoughtfully. As your teenager becomes an adult, the lifestyle you have implanted in him or her will continually have its influence.

Tips on Horse Nutrition

You may love your horse, you may care for it, and you may love to ride it but if you don't know how to properly feed it, your horse may not care for you. Nutrition is important to any animal on earth and even more important for a large and useful animal such as your horse. If your horse is to be useful to you and to your farm, whether you make it work or whether you ride it, knowing how to feed it and what it eats best is key in keeping your horse healthy. This page will give you a few tips on your horse's nutrition. One of the most important parts of a horse's digestive system is the teeth.

The teeth are the gateway to a complex digestive system and so without properly maintained teeth, the horse will not feed well and thus will not be healthy. Horses are grazing animals and when left alone will feed constantly for about 16 hours a day. This takes a toll on the horse's teeth heavier than our food does on ours. This means horse teeth must be maintained well. Also, because horses cannot vomit, ensuring that their teeth are well maintained avoids swallowing bulky pieces of food which may lead to choking. Horses love feeding on legumes such as clover, alfalfa and also on grass.

Legumes are naturally rich in calcium and phosphorous. Alfalfa, in fact, contains a lot of calcium and phosphorus and should be fed to the horse cautiously. Horses feed on grasses such as bluegrass. Horses will also feed well on hay, which is a combination of legumes and grasses, which have been dried. Try to make hay available every time so horses can nibble on it when they need to. Studying and knowing your horse's nutrition is important to the well-being and health of your horse. Come visit our website where you will find the horse supplies that fit your needs. We are available 12 hours a day on business days and we can take your order online, by mail, or by fax. Visit us at www.tacktrunks.net or call 1-908-294-3418.
