Pet Rabbit Nutrition 101

 

One of the most important aspects of properly caring for your pet rabbit is providing him with a healthy, satisfying, and well-balanced diet. Fortunately, doing so is relatively easy, since there is general consensus about what is good for rabbits and a wide range of great food pellet options. Rabbits can also eat many of the fruits and veggies that you probably have on your dinner table every night (see below for recommendations and portions).

 

Hay is an essential component of a rabbit's healthy diet.

 

Hay

One reason why is that feeding a rabbit hay on a daily basis seems to reduce rabbits tendencies to pull out and consume or chew on their own hair, which leads to (sometimes very dangerous) hairballs.

Buy high-quality leafy grass hay, timothy hay or clover hay. Avoid alfalfa hay, as it can sometimes be problematic and has been shown to increase the risk of bladder stones.

 

FRESH Water

Like all creatures, rabbits need fresh water in order to survive. Change water daily or at least every two days. When you change the water, also wash the water bottle or dish thoroughly to get rid of bacteria. You may want to use a water bottle that can hang on a cage, as this can reduce the messiness factor. If you prefer to use a bowl, make sure it is sturdy and heavy enough so that your rabbit won't overturn it.

 

Yogurt?

Although it may sound funny, rabbits can actually benefit from yogurt just the same way that humans do. Yogurt is proven to reduce the bad bacteria in the body, balancing out the good bacteria in the process. Many pet rabbits seem to like yogurt and accept it as a part of a balanced daily diet.

 

Chew Toys

As you will quickly learn as a new rabbit owner, bunnies love to bite and chew on things. This is actually essential for good dental health, but the trick is to give them good substances to chew on so they won't be tempted to eat up your furniture or other, more dangerous substances, like wires or electrical cords.

 

A dog's chew toy (on the smaller side) can be a great alternative, one which most rabbits seem to enjoy a great deal. Two more natural options are a large bone from a piece of boiled meat, with the bone marrow taken out, or some apple tree branches (the twigs are great roughage and help keep the bunny's intestines clean). Rabbits tend to be quite sensitive when it comes to changes in their diet or feeding schedule. In fact, if there is a sudden change or interruption, a rabbit may lose his appetite or become ill.

 

Therefore, it's important to be consistant. Establish a feeding routine that is easy for you to stick to each and every day. Set your timer and fix the feeding schedule into your own everyday routine. Make sure you have enough rabbit food (whether hay, pellets, veggies, etc.) on hand so that you don't run out unexpectedly. Feeding your rabbit a consistent, balanced and healthy diet is one of the best ways to ensure that your pet has a long and happy life as your prized companion.

It is important to remember that making your diet healthier does not necessarily mean making a radical change. Simple changes, like trimming the excess fat off of a steak, or substituting nonfat yogurt for sour cream on your baked potato, can go a long way toward enjoying a healthier lifestyle. As a matter of fact, in the long run the simplest and easiest to follow changes are the ones that matter most. Nutrition for an Aging Cat

All cats are created equal, right? Wrong. Senior cats have special dietary needs, different from adult cats and kittens. Their bodies require different things. Sometimes, you will have to supplement in order to provide them proper nutrition. Their energy needs may stay the same, but a cat's ability to absorb fat changes as it ages. A cat in his senior years will need more protein than other cats of different ages. Smaller kibble, fortified with more vitamins and antioxidants, should be available as an option for senior cats.

 

As cats age, they become much more vulnerable to disease, as their immune system weakens over time. A cat's diet should reflect that change and be altered to provide more of a defense. Perhaps they need to increase their Omega-3 fatty acid intake due to a form of cancer, or maybe they need a soft gentle food due to an oral disease. A thorough checkup is necessary to establish the proper plan for your cat's dietary needs to help keep your senior cat healthy throughout his later years. A checkup is very important, as the same checkup your cat received as a kitten and as an adult will not be the same as the one he has as a senior. Bodies and chemical structure, just as with humans, change. Your own health at sixty is certainly not the same as your health as a newborn.

 

A lot of elderly cats have difficulty eating. They may go several days without eating entirely! After ruling out disease, you're likely to find that your cat has become rather finicky to the taste and feel of his food. You might try warming food in the microwave, or adding juice or gravy to the food. At the most extreme, there is something called an animal appetite stimulator that you can get from the vet. However, this should be used as a very last resort.

 

Observing your cat's daily dietary habits and relaying that information to your vet will help the both of you to work out a dietary plan that is tailor-made to your senior cat. Through careful care and love, and proper nutrition, your senior cat can live a prosperous life without worry, and you can rest easier knowing you're doing all that you can for your senior cat.

The New And Improved Nutrition Pyramid

Just when you were getting the Nutrition Pyramid down to an exact science, the USDA goes and releases an all new nutrition and diet plan for healthy Americans. On April 19, 2005, the United States Department of Agriculture unveiled its new My Pyramid nutrition pyramid. Available at its own web site (http://www.mypyramid.gov), the new guidelines aren't so much NEW as they are more in depth, detailed and helpful.

 

Nutrients, enzymes, vitamins, and minerals are the life force of the body's immune system, which gives the body the power to fight disease and illness. Fruits, vegetables, and grains are healthy, high carbohydrate foods with vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and provide a great source of fiber.

 

For starters, My Pyramid can be personalized. On the main page, you have the option of entering your age, gender and activity level. Simply click "submit" and get a recommendation that's more specific than '6-11 servings of grain per day'. Instead of those vague, wide-ranging recommendations, you'll get a pyramid that says, "6 ounces of grain products", or 2 1/2 cups vegetables.

 

Even if that were the ONLY improvement on the new site, it would be tremendous. No more guessing whether you should aim for closer to six servings or closer to eleven. The nutrition calculator factors in your age, gender and activity level (above your normal daily routine) to come up with a recommended caloric intake. From there, it breaks down the calories by food group, and tells you exactly how much of each group you should eat per day for a healthy diet. It's far easier to figure out what 2 cups of milk is than it is to figure out how much '3-5' servings of dairy is!

 

But it doesn't stop there. Beneath the pyramid chart with the specific serving sizes on it, you'll find a list of links to 'tips' for making the healthiest choices from each food group - divided by food group. There are some great diet tips there, along with ways to serve foods in appetizing and nutritious ways.

 

A sampling from each category includes:

* Grain: Substitute whole grain cereal for bread crumbs in toppings.

* Vegetables: Try crunchy vegetables raw or lightly steamed.

* Fruits: Try applesauce as a fat-free substitute for oil in baking.

* Milk: Trim down from whole milk to fat-free gradually, week by week.

* Meat/Beans: Replace some of the meat in your diet with nuts.
