Chitosan Articles, Tips and Information

The History Of Chitosan

Chitosan (pronounced Kite-O-San) has long been considered as the "fat magnet". Researches have it that it is simply a fat inhibitor which appears to work miracles for those in search of a safe way to lose that body fat.

1950s arrived and the use of x-ray analysis had advanced the study of the occurrence of chitin or chitosan in fungai.

The chitosan is actually a substance taken from chitin, a polysaccharide found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. It is processed by removing the shells from the shellfish like lobster, shrimps and crabs. How and when chitosan was discovered is the main subject to be tackled here. Let's consider the following details.

The origin of chitosan can be traced back to 1811 when "chitin", from which it is derived, was first discovered by Braconnot, a then professor of the natural history in France. According to some researches, while Braconnot was conducting research on mushrooms, he isolated what was later to be called chitin.

Some 20 years later, there was a man who authored an article on insects in which he noted that similar substance was present in the structure of insects as well as the structure of plants. He then called this amazing substance as "chitin". Basically, the name chitin is derived from Greek, meaning "tunic" or "envelope". The concept was further known in 1843 when Lassaigne demonstrated the presence of nitrogen in chitin.

After the discovery of chitin, the name "chitosan" emerged in the scene. It was first discovered by Rouget while experimenting with chitin. Accordingly, Rouget observed that the compound of chitin could be manipulated through chemical and temperature treatments for it to become soluble. Then, it was in 1878 when Ledderhose identified chitin to be made of glucosamine and acetic acid. It was not actually until 1894 that Hoppe-Seyler named the tailored chitin, chitosan.

By the early 20th century, several researches took chitosan as their subject of study. They then involved sources of chitin, including crab shells and fungai. It was the work of Rammelberg in the 1930s that led to the confirmation on the identity of chitosan from these sources. It was also noted that by hydrolyzing chitin in a number of ways, it was determined by experts that chitin is a polysaccharide of glucosamine.

However, it is only the most advanced technologies that proved the most reliable in identifying the presence of chitin as well as cellulose in the cell walls. The first book on chitosan was published 140 years after the initial observation of Braconnot, and that was in 1951.

In the early 1960s, chitosan was investigated for its ability to bind with the red blood cells. That time also, the substance was considered as a hemostatic agent. Then, for the past three decades, chitosan has been used at water purification plants for detoxifying water. It is spread over the surface where it absorbs greases, oils, and other potential toxins.

Today, it is known as a dietary supplement that is good for weight loss. In fact, it has been marketed for such purpose for about 20 years in Japan as well as in Europe. Many people even call it as the "fat blocker".

Myth about Chitosan!

If you are planning to down Chitoson in a bid to lose weight fast, read on first! You may be wasting your heard earned cash on a diet pill that does not deliver as it should. We do our best to provide accurate and unbiased information and reviews on bodybuilding and weight loss supplements, which we hope will be useful to you. Chitosan is basically a fiber derived from shellfish and it claims to have the ability to dissolve and grab hold of fats and cholesterol in the stomach. You may have seen some outrageous claims that you can eat whatever you want, and Chitosan will block out all the fat from the media.

Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?

You're right, it is not all that true. Chitosan is extracted from the shell of crustaceans like shrimp and crab. Contrary to what you might think, Chitosan has been used for over 30 years. It is not some new, revolutionary discovery, or new weigh loss miracle pill. So do not get fooled by the media hype. Note: you shouldn't take Chitosan if you have any type of shellfish allergies.(see Diet Pill Review)

There were NO substantial studies done with humans (if any) before producing and selling this product to the public. Weight loss experts all agree that Chitosan simply doesn't work. Previous studies done on Chitosan were 'small' studies and were not published in peer reviewed journals. There is no studies that have found Chitosan to effectively block fat in humans. In a 1999 study conducted by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it showed that the Chitosan group who took 8 pills a day for 4 weeks showed no more weight loss than the placebo group.

Because few studies have been done on Chitosan, there are little recorded side effects of Chitosan. No long term studies have been performed on the side effects of Chitosan, and some studies have show Chitosan to prevent effective absorption of minerals and vitamins.

Thorough clinical studies on humans have show that Chitosan does NOT work! Initial Chitosan research were done on animals, NOT humans. Chitosan - Soluble Fiber for Weight Management

WHAT IS Chitosan ?
The dietary supplement, Chitosan is the processed, more water-soluble form of one of the most common substances in nature: chitin (KITE-in). The exoskeletons of arthropods (ants, shellfish, etc.) and the walls of many molds, yeast and fungi contain this building block of nature.

HISTORY OF CHITOSAN
Chitosan was first discovered in 1811 by Henri Braconnot, director of the botanical garden in Nancy, France. Bracannot observed that a certain substance (chitin) found in mushrooms did not dissolve in sulfuric acid. Over the last 200 years, the exploration of Chitosan has taken on many different forms. Several other researchers continue to build on the original finding of Bracannot, discovering new uses for chitin as they find different forms of it in nature.

BENEFITING WEIGHT LOSS
Besides from the obvious effect that fat is not absorbed into the body with the presence of Chitosan, it goes a lot deeper in benefiting weight loss. Chitosan is a 100% natural and acts as a super fiber. Thus, supplementing the diet with Chitosan, is part of creating a cleansing process which is said to be extremely vital to weight loss. Take note that these are again the simple declarations made by the producers of Chitosan and are supported with no background studies or thus medical proof of any sort. Another stated advantage of chitosan comes from the idea that the Chitosan-bound fat leaves the intestinal tract without ever entering the bloodstream. Exactly how this process takes place is not clear and seems to be somewhat far fetched. If this indeed is possible, then the point is made that there would be no caloric value and no matter how much Chitosan a person takes, the caloric count remains zero. (Revolutionary Discovery: Chitosan) The producers of Chitosan-based products also try to claim that since a person taking Chitosan continues to eat some sort of fats and is able to continue eating these types of food, the body does not crave such fattening foods nor is it starving or feeling any added sense of hunger. By supplementing Chitosan into one's diet, there is less fat that the body accumulates. With less fat entering the body, the body turns to previously stored body fat to burn up. This shifts the energy source from your diet to your stored body fat and results in a net reduction in that fat - and in your weight.

CHITOSAN'S MOST ADVERTISED EFFECTS CLAIM TO:
Neutralize fat, thus causing weight loss
Reduce cholesterol
Provide a safe and natural weight loss program with minimal / no side effects

Fat Magnets, Chitosan, and Soap

I recently chanced upon a web ad for chitosan, claimed to be a "Fat Magnet", which would let one eat fatty foods and lose weight. Looked like another magic pill. So I turned to my handy Google.Com search engine for information. Chitosan is processed from chitin, mostly obtained from crushed shellfish shells, crab shells, and similar. Chitosan is a polymer with structure similar to cellulose. It has applications in industry, such as to hold catalysts.

The national governments of both Britain and the USA have taken legal actions against makers and sellers of chitosan as a diet supplement, because claims that fat absorption can be blocked by ingesting chitosan have been tested and proven false. Yet many internet sites are still selling this snake- oil medicine. I wonder why that is. Don't the good guys win and make the bad guys go away?

One of the diet sales sites told me that chitosan is an extract of crushed shellfish shells, and can ionically attract "negatively charged fat like a magnet". For starters, the mechanism of magnets does not involve ions or charge attraction. An example does come to mind in which ions interact with fats, namely the making and use of soaps.

Again, let's turn to the handy Google.Com search engine.
Soap was discovered at least four thousand years ago, and many times in many places since then. Soap was not always used to clean, sometimes the soft form being used to treat open wounds, or as a hair dressing, for two examples. One way for soap to form is for fat drippings from a cooking fire to combine with water and the alkali existing in wood ashes. This alkali is hydroxide of sodium and potassium. One legend says that rain water falling on fire altars used for animal sacrifice to gods caused soap to form and flow into streams that were then discovered to be good for cleaning clothes.

A molecule of soap consists of a molecule of fatty acid (carbon and hydrogen atoms) chemically combined with an atom of sodium or potassium, with some other atoms, such as oxygen, tied in. The chemical process involves the exchange of electrons among the parts, said parts being identifiable as positive and negative ions. Soft fats tend to make softer soaps than solid fats. Potassium makes softer soaps than sodium.

Soap helps in cleaning because it helps fat to emulsify (or soponify or saponify) in water, that is the fat molecules become distributed in water containing soap. The alkali end of the soap molecule loves water, and the fat end is attracted to fat. If the fats to be removed start out in solid form, the water can be heated.

Many recipes can be found through Google search for making soap. Some include boric acid, sodium carbonate, aromatic oils, added heat, and so forth, along with water, fat, and alkali. Be warned that sodium and potassium hydroxide are caustics which can attack skin, aluminum pans, et cetera. Lye, or sodium hydroxide, is well known as a drain cleaner, and can cause burns, even death, if used carelessly. Simply pouring lye and liquid fat together can make a smelly, hot mess, not yet a usable soap.

Does the ability of soap to emulsify fats make it a dietary supplement to reduce fat absorption? I don't think so. Even if it did work, I can't see myself eating enough soap to deal with fatty food consumption. Soap solution would probably act as a very powerful laxative, because it can be used for enemas.

Thus, I conclude that "Fat Magnets" are just another magic trick that does not work. I add them to the following list.

"Fat Burners": Anyone who has read my books or articles on health knows that the body's "FBs" are "FIBs". Therefore, magic pills, foods, food combinations to "turn up your fat burners" are like any other magic, just tricks.

"Fat Blocker" / "Starch Blocker": I have yet to read of any dietary supplement for blocking absorption of starches or fats which (1) works, and (2) does so without severe health risks.

As described in my "Easy Health Diet", the best way for reducing fat in the body is to not eat much fat (or other concentrated calories). Prevention is far more powerful than cure. There are plenty of foods low in fat, sugar, and alcohol, to fill up on.

AN OBSERVATION:

crushed shellfish shells ARE a good source for calcium, but not the most readily absorbed form. Farmers feed it to chickens to provide calcium while also providing grit for the birds' food grinding process in the gizzard. Egg layers need a lot of calcium for the shells.
