Chitosan the Fat Buster: Miracle or Myth?

Chitosan popularly known as the fat buster has been there for ages. Chitosan is produced commercially by deacetylation of chitin found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. This is processed by removing the shells from shellfish like lobster, shrimps and crabs.

Chitosan is safe and acts as a supplement. It can create a cleansing process in your body which is good for weight loss.

Uses of Chitosan:

• They are being used as a plant enhancer as they can boost up the plants to fight against fungal infections. They can be used both for indoor and outdoor plants. They do not have any harmful chemicals so they are safe for people, animals and the environment as well.

• Chitosan are also used for water filtration process. When they are put on water they absorb any toxic substances such as oils or grease or any other heavy metals. They cause the fine sediment particles to bind together thus forming a scum on the surface which can be easily removed during filtration.

• Most popularly sold as a fat attractor as they can soak up saturated fats from your digestive system and expel it from your body thus you can lose weight without you giving up on your diet.

How do they work in weight loss?

Chitosan is available in the market mostly in tablet form. It is a special fiber that can soak up saturated fat like a magnet and absorbs about 4 to 6 times its weight in fats. It does not let the fat reach your stomach and so does not get metabolized. It forms an indigestible gel which traps the fat and then the fat gets eliminated with your body waste. As lipids, fats and bile acids all have negative charges, hence they form chemical bonding with each other and so attract naturally.

The producers also say that this process can be boosted by addition of vitamin C and enhance the absorption of lipids. The increased suppression of appetite is obtained by adding citric acid and thus boosts up the action of chitosan as well. Thus, most of the products which contain chitosan as a chief substance also include the addition of some sort of vitamin C supplement. Whatever claims are being made by the producers, researches show that chitosan can remove roughly about 30 calories a day. They may also cause side effects as they may render ineffective minerals required by your body.

As there are no specific research studies to support the claims on chitosan used for weight loss you must be careful about taking it. Chitosan is not a drug, but a natural fiber and is safe for consumption. However those having seafood allergy and pregnant women should avoid taking it.

The History Of Chitosan

Chitosan (pronounced Kite-O-San) has long been considered as the “fat magnet”. Researches have it that it is simply a fat inhibitor which appears to work miracles for those in search of a safe way to lose that body fat. The chitosan is actually a substance taken from chitin, a polysaccharide found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans. It is processed by removing the shells from the shellfish like lobster, shrimps and crabs. How and when chitosan was discovered is the main subject to be tackled here. Let’s consider the following details.

Some 20 years later, there was a man who authored an article on insects in which he noted that similar substance was present in the structure of insects as well as the structure of plants.

The origin of chitosan can be traced back to 1811 when “chitin”, from which it is derived, was first discovered by Braconnot, a then professor of the natural history in France. According to some researches, while Braconnot was conducting research on mushrooms, he isolated what was later to be called chitin. He then called this amazing substance as “chitin”. Basically, the name chitin is derived from Greek, meaning “tunic” or “envelope”. The concept was further known in 1843 when Lassaigne demonstrated the presence of nitrogen in chitin.

After the discovery of chitin, the name “chitosan” emerged in the scene. It was first discovered by Rouget while experimenting with chitin. Accordingly, Rouget observed that the compound of chitin could be manipulated through chemical and temperature treatments for it to become soluble. Then, it was in 1878 when Ledderhose identified chitin to be made of glucosamine and acetic acid. It was not actually until 1894 that Hoppe-Seyler named the tailored chitin, chitosan. By the early 20th century, several researches took chitosan as their subject of study. They then involved sources of chitin, including crab shells and fungai. It was the work of Rammelberg in the 1930s that led to the confirmation on the identity of chitosan from these sources. It was also noted that by hydrolyzing chitin in a number of ways, it was determined by experts that chitin is a polysaccharide of glucosamine.

1950s arrived and the use of x-ray analysis had advanced the study of the occurrence of chitin or chitosan in fungai. However, it is only the most advanced technologies that proved the most reliable in identifying the presence of chitin as well as cellulose in the cell walls. The first book on chitosan was published 140 years after the initial observation of Braconnot, and that was in 1951. In the early 1960s, chitosan was investigated for its ability to bind with the red blood cells. That time also, the substance was considered as a hemostatic agent. Then, for the past three decades, chitosan has been used at water purification plants for detoxifying water. It is spread over the surface where it absorbs greases, oils, and other potential toxins. Today, it is known as a dietary supplement that is good for weight loss. In fact, it has been marketed for such purpose for about 20 years in Japan as well as in Europe. Many people even call it as the “fat blocker”.

Dietery fiber promotes weight loss

Chitosan a new fiber derived from chitin in shellfish, is classified as a no digestible amino polysaccharide. The chemical nature of the Chitosan fiber makes it bind with fat, which becomes a large mass that the body cannot absorb as it passes through the intestinal tract. Chitosan is synthesized by removing acetyl groups from chitin, through a process called deacetylation. Chitosan does not contain any appreciable amounts of toxic minerals such as mercury, which have previously been associated with the meaty portions of certain shellfish. When taken as part of the Maximum Metabolism Weight Loss Plan, body fat may be reduced.

Why should I take Chitosan?
Like other fibers ,Chitosan is indigestible, and can reduce "transit time", which is the time it takes for foods to pass through the digestive system and out of the body. Therefore less fats in general, including cholesterol, sterols, fatty acids, and essential fatty acids are available to be absorbed. Dietary fiber is usually deficient in modern diets where foods are more highly processed. Fiber tends to increase stool bulk, hydration and it acts as a catalyst for colonic micro flora, all of which speed transit time, and produces a softer stool.

Chitosan is soluble in stomach acid and its amino groups become positively charged via proteination by the acid. In the presence of dietary fatty acids, which carry net negative charges, ionic bonds form that binds the fatty acids to the Chitosan amino groups.

As the soluble Chitosan and fatty acid complex moves into the small intestine, it also binds with bile acids and cholesterol that are present. The complex absorbs up to 400 times its weight in water and begins to floc (mass) due to the higher, less acidic pH in the small intestine. This flocculation further aids the binding process by trapping or encapsulating all of the bound lipids, including cholesterol.

How does Chitosan Work?
As the pH continues to increase the Chitosan floc forms an insoluble gel consisting of Chitosan, bile acids, bound lipids and cholesterol. The gelatin and subsequent insolubility of the Chitosan complex prevents any of the bound fats from being absorbed into the blood stream. The insoluble gel is than passed into the large intestine which can present unique problems. When these fats pass through to the large intestine the bacterial flora present creates large amounts of intestinal gas and cramping, but since this bound complex is trapped in the gel it can not react in this way and is safely passed through. The key to Chitosan's functionality appears to be the presence of repeating amino groups throughout its polymeric structure.

Chitosan Research:
Although the mechanism by which Chitosan works is still being researched, animal studies have shown that Chitosan binds with bile salts in the digestive tract, reduces the absorption of certain dietary fats (like cholesterol and oleic acid), and plays a role in maintaining healthy serum cholesterol levels in laboratory animals. (Results of animal studies may not extrapolate to humans). Chitosan also binds fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E and K, making them unavailable to the body. There is a concern that absorption of carotenoids (including beta carotene) is also impaired.

Chitosan Benefits:

Reduces body fat

Chitosan Side Effects:
Too much Chitosan may contribute to feeling overly full or distended.
Unfortunately, the fact that Chitosan prevents fat absorption also means that it can also cause gas, bloating, and diarrhea (due to fermentation of the fat in the large intestine). The possibility also exists for Chitosan, at high intakes, to interfere with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and the carotenoids (such as beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin) - in a similar way to how the "fake-fat" Olestra can reduce absorption of these nutrients.

Major Forms:
Chitosan is available in tablets and capsules form

Recommended Dosage:
Take 3 capsules 60 minutes before a fat containing meal with 8 ounces of water. For optimal results, have no more than two fat-containing meals per day. Do not take fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K within three hours.

Always store in a cool, dry place

Chitosan Cautions:
Keep out of the reach of children
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your health care professional before using this product

Does Dieting With Chitosan Work?

If you are planning to down Chitoson in a bid to lose weight fast, read on first! You may be wasting your heard earned cash on a diet pill that does not deliver as it should. We do our best to provide accurate and unbiased information and reviews on bodybuilding and weight loss supplements, which we hope will be useful to you. Chitosan is basically a fiber derived from shellfish and it claims to have the ability to dissolve and grab hold of fats and cholesterol in the stomach.

The producers also claim that as they have the ability to expel fat from your body a person can continue taking fats in their diet and so the cravings for such foods is not there. As less fat enters the body, the body turns to previously stored body fat to burn up. This shifts the energy source from your diet to your stored body fat and results in a net reduction in that fat.

You may have seen some outrageous claims that you can eat whatever you want, and Chitosan will block out all the fat from the media. Sounds too good to be true doesn't it?

You're right, it is not all that true. Chitosan is extracted from the shell of crustaceans like shrimp and crab. Contrary to what you might think, Chitosan has been used for over 30 years. It is not some new, revolutionary discovery, or new weigh loss miracle pill. So do not get fooled by the media hype. Note: you shouldn't take Chitosan if you have any type of shellfish allergies.

Chitosan makes grand promises of 'absorbing' fat and preventing it from getting into your body. Is it the ultimate 'Fat Blocker' - or is it? Far from it. Thorough clinical studies on humans have show that Chitosan does NOT work! Initial Chitosan research were done on animals, NOT humans. These studies on animals did show some effectiveness, and did show some fat-absorbing abilities; however no studies have been done on the effects of chitosan on dietary fat absorption in humans.

There were NO substantial studies done with humans (if any) before producing and selling this product to the public. Weight loss experts all agree that Chitosan simply doesn't work. Previous studies done on Chitosan were 'small' studies and were not published in peer reviewed journals. There is no studies that have found Chitosan to effectively block fat in humans. In a 1999 study conducted by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it showed that the Chitosan group who took 8 pills a day for 4 weeks showed no more weight loss than the placebo group.

Because few studies have been done on Chitosan, there are little recorded side effects of Chitosan. No long term studies have been performed on the side effects of Chitosan, and some studies have show Chitosan to prevent effective absorption of minerals and vitamins.
